Despite heavy criticism from Amy Winehouse’s family, the documentary Amy is set to premiere this summer. The first official clip from the film has surfaced, and it makes good on the promise that Amy will boast plenty of intimate, never-before-seen footage along with new interviews from many of the late singer’s friends and associates.

In the clip, we see footage of Winehouse fooling around with a video camera (“I look like a floating head, I’ve got no hair, I’m just on a black screen”) while her former manager Nick Schmansky talks about recording the singer’s first demos. For those early tracks, Winehouse converted some of her poems into song lyrics, which we see handwritten by the singer on yellow lined paper with hearts drawn in the margins. “When I’m in / the deepest funk / she cheers me with / a little Monk,” Winehouse wrote at the time.

Winehouse’s family recently revealed that they have “disassociated themselves from the forthcoming film” because the documentary does “a disservice to individuals and families suffering from the complicated affliction of addiction.” The singer’s father, Mitch Winehouse, was also upset that filmmakers interviewed Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who in the film, blames Mitch for Amy’s addictions.

“We came on board with the full backing of the Winehouse family, and we approached the project with total objectivity,” a documentary spokesperson said in a statement defending the film. “We conducted in the region of 100 interviews with people that knew Amy. The story that the film tells is a reflection of our findings from these interviews.” Mitch Winehouse, who called the film “horrible” and director Asif Kapadia a “disgrace,” has hinted he may pursue legal action after the film premieres this July.
