Subverting the traditional context of an orange traffic cone, portuguese LIKEarchitects’ interactive installation invites the public to experience urban space in a new way. ‘Cone’ is the construction of 500 plastic traffic cones into a permanent art piece for paredes city park in portugal — the hard material was chosen specifically for its weather resistance and permanence. The neon modular structure juxtaposes the grassy space, encouraging curious passers-by to investigate it — walking through and sitting under the plastic maze. Hazard cones are typically integrated into city streets, indicating vehicular caution, but LIKEarchitects’ wanted the unconventional material to rouse an interest in park dwellers. At night, the orange sculpture is lit-up with a red-colored LED lighting stytem, illuminating it and the surrounding parkscape.
