Montblanc Régulateur Nautique Timepiece Set.

Accurate measuring as we know it today was born on aboard ship: or, to be more precise, aboard vessels voyaging on the high seas.  Before the dawn of satellite-assisted navigation, highly accurate clocks were the only instruments which could enable a mariner to exactly determine his position at sea.  This is reason enough for Montblanc to devote its efforts to this theme and to devise innovative ideas that refresh watch lovers’ memories about this important tradition.  The result debuts in the new Régulateur Nautique watch set in the Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858, which was unveiled at the SIHH 2012.

Each set consists of a wristwatch chronograph with regulator dial and two time zones, along with a large navigational clock which, in addition to showing three time zones on its main regulator dial, also includes a world-time indicator.  The case is made in polished nickel and measures 640mm x 560mm x 930mm and weighs 120 kilograms while the crystal is sapphire.  Powered by the Swiss manual-wind Montblanc in-house calibre movement with 13 jewels, 18,000 vph, it boasts of a power reserve of 360 hours.  Functions include local time, port departure time, port arrival time, GMT, day/night indicator and power reserve indicator.  This Montblanc Nautique Regulator is a limited edition set of just 16 pieces – 8 sets with red gold wristwatch chronographs and 8 more with wristwatch chronographs in white gold cases.  The cost for one of these nautical objets d’art is $385 700. They will be available at Montblanc boutiques and select jewelers beginning in June.

Gangster Squad.

A name is everything when it comes to entertainment, but some names can be quite misleading.  When I saw the all black poster with nothing but the words ‘Gangster Squad’ on it, I assumed it was probably some flick with a bunch of rappers and starring the Tupac hologram.  But after hearing from an editor who worked on the movie about what it was really about, I was more than intrigued.  Click the pic to check this awesome trailer about a gangster true story.

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and–if he has his way–every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. “Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.

And You Thought Going Green Would Be Easy.

It’s just logic that people use things.  Some things are consumed, while others are thrown away.  The more people, the more stuff.  Eventually everything gets to a heinous point, and this planet has reached that point for sure.  These photos from locations all over the globe are proof of that.

Thousands of scrapped taxis are abandoned at a yard in the center of Chongqing city on March 4, 2009. Indian scavengers look for coins and other valuable items from among the offerings of devotees in the Ganges at Varanasi on April 5, 2009. More than 400 million people live along the Ganges River. An estimated 2,000,000 persons ritually bathe daily in the river, which is considered holy by Hindus. In the Hindu religion it is said to flow from the lotus feet of Vishnu (for Vaisnava devotees) or the hair of Shiva (for Saivites). While the Ganges may be considered holy, there are some problems associated with the ecology. It is filled with chemical wastes, sewage and even the remains of human and animal corpses which carry major health risks by either direct bathing in the water (e.g.: Bilharziasis infection), or by drinking (the Fecal-oral route).

Experts at the Institute for Public Health warn that this pollution factor is decreasing people’s life expectancy.

Dubai Reveals Latest Plan For Underwater Hotel.

A long-awaited undersea hotel in Dubai looks finally set to be built, after an agreement to develop it was unveiled this week.  The Water Discus Hotel won’t be totally submerged but will be a disc-like structure with part of the building above water and the rest below the surface.  The 21 rooms will be submerged up to ten meters below the surface of the water, with huge windows offering a view out from the bed and an external ‘explorer’ robot which can be controlled from the room to allow guests to interact with marine life.  According to Deep Ocean Technology, a restaurant, spa and reception area would be hosted above the waterline, with guests descending below the surface in glass-walled tunnels to get to their rooms.

As might be expected, the hotel would offer plenty of services for divers, with a training pool and other water sports offerings set to be available.  The hotel will also include other amenities such as a spa, helipad, and an above ground terrace should guests feel a bit claustrophobic stuck inside The Discus.  With no specific planned opening date, observers will be watching closely whether this plan comes any further than previous attempts to build underwater hotels in Dubai, which have stalled or quietly disappeared as the country faced economic ruin.

Marina Victoria.

Normally when it comes to models, my team and I find scattered pieces of information around the net and compile them for a post, then sprinkle it with some of our personal opinions. But in the case of the gorgeous Marina Victoria, her bio reads like a book. In respects to whoever wrote it, I couldn’t break it up, so you can take a read after her pictures below.

On April 26, 1987 at 10: 30 am, her first smile was seen as she entered the world in a small town called Evpatoria, Ukraine. “Marina!” her mother would call into the neighborhood playground from her kitchen window. They lived in a poor building where 5 – 7 different families would share the same bathroom and kitchen. Growing up was not easy especially with her dad abandoning them, leaving her mom Juliya with two children to raise and no job or any sort of income. Growing up, she was a tom boy. She used to always get into fights, climb fences and trees, and almost blew up the neighborhood when her and her friend decided to make a bond fire beside a gas tank. Of course she will never forget the beating she got from an old lady and her grandmother who caught them. Although Marina always tried to live her life to the fullest and stay positive, she knew that she was meant to be more.

At the age of 7, her mother Juliya and the daughters were on the line of being homeless. Juliya borrowed money for an airplane ticket to go to Canada to work and bring back money to survive, while leaving her two daughters with their ill grandmother. When Juliya arrived to Canada, she was standing at the airport with five dollars in her pocket, no English or relatives to turn to. As she started praying to god she heard “Excuse me, would you be kind enough to help me with my luggage?” an old lady asked . They got to talking, and Juliya ended up staying with the old lady while taking care of her grandkids and cleaning houses on the side.

After two and a half long years, Marina and her mom were finally reunited when she arrived to Canada at the age of 9. Juliya was still cleaning houses and going to college while Marina went to elementary school. It was not easy for Marina to get used to this lifestyle. She did not have any friends and did not speak English at all. After a few months of being in Canada, Marina gained a lot of weight due to different environment and food. She was always made fun of at school, which made it harder for her to accept and live her new life in Canada. The summer before high school, Marina went back to her hometown for the summer, where she swam everyday with her old family and friends and ate healthy like she used.

When she came back, she lost all the extra weight, her skin was silky tanned, and body toned. Her life changed dramatically. She went to a new school, met a lot of new friends. Her mom and her friends always told her she should get into modeling, but being a young teenager and previous self esteem issues, she never took it seriously. She decided to pursue her passion for dancing instead. She started to take dance lessons at the age of 14, and at the age of 17 she was in a famous dance group called School of Mayhem. Unfortunately hard times hit and she had to stop dancing, quit school, and took on three jobs to help out with bills at home and take care of her family financially in Ukraine.

Later, she decided to take her first modeling gig, and was a feature on a well known Canadian retail clothing website. She then took on more challenging offers that allowed her to display her background in dance with projects that gave her lead roles in music videos.

What was supposed to be just a hobby, has taken Marina to places she could not have imagined in her wildest dreams, from winning the number one spot in the SCN Bikini contest 2006, to fashion shows, to music videos and Magazine features, Marina is recognized by more people everyday for her unique Korean/Russian look and her outstanding personality. She is currently the spokes model for ProjectBounce Inc. which is one of the largest companies in Canada for urban media. MV’s journey has only just begun…

This little beast (named the Ninja Time watch) has two “eyes” which show the hour and the minute, while the rest of the watch is dedicated to framing them in a way that looks assuredly ninja in style. The entire casing is made from molded plastic, the dials controlled by the ninja’s “ears” so you can set the time whenever you like.

Sexy Seating.

I’ll do my best to not sound pornographic when describing this design, but the truth is that this is one sexy piece. The JOKI bench’s curves have a sensual aesthetic that is also functional as it contours the human body perfectly. The fluid shape was carefully planned so the modular pieces can be recombined to align perfectly no matter which ends you combine.

Kintaro, The Golden Boy: Artwork By Kuniyoshi.

Kintaro (a.k.a. “Golden Boy”), a popular child folk hero embodying strength and bravery, appears in statues, storybooks, anime, manga, noh, kabuki and candy. He was also the subject of numerous Edo-period woodblock prints.  Various legends say that Kintaro was raised by a Yamamba ogress in the mountains, where he learned to communicate with animals. As a youngster, Kintaro developed superhuman strength that enabled him to crush boulders, fight monsters and demons, uproot trees, and defeat bears at sumo.  The artist Kuniyoshi has an immense collection of prints centered around Kintaro.  Check the method.

Design Studio Hernandez Silva Arquitectos worked on the interior decoration penthouse PPDG, located on the 15th floor of a building in a colonial-style 70th years in Guadalajara, Mexico.  A characteristic feature of the project is that a volume that was originally intended for a second elevator and was never installed becomes a bathroom with a glass floor that looks down all the 15 levels.

This smart-board will simultaneously serve as your cutting board, display your recipes, provide step-by-step directions and weigh your ingredients out for you.
