DO IT!

Artists tend to have certain catalysts that spur them into doing good work at a hyper accelerated pace.  My good friend and fellow DJ, Jeff Phantom tend to be a catalyst for each other.  Phantom, being on tour, passed through the Bay, and we already have a multitude of projects to give out to the public.  The first of which is an edit of “Stranger” originally produced by Skrillex.  Take a listen below, and click the pic above for a free download.

Steve Aoki, Chris Lake & Tujamo – Boneless (ENFERNO Live Remix).

0903_arts_enfernoThe art of DJ’ing has been undoubtedly convoluted with actors, and pretenders who just pre-mix sets, and dance around on stage.  It’s a trend I feel like will only get worse before it gets better.  There are of course turntable warriors like DJ Enferno who not only do everything live, but are more than happy to demonstrate their skills.  Check out Enferno’s amazing live remix of ‘Boneless’ from Steve Aoki, Chris Lake, & Tujamo.

The Gangnam Style Guy Has A Song With Who?

Screen Shot 2014-06-08 at 10.47.29 PM

Psy, the highest viewed artist on YouTube is back again with another memorable video.  Hangover, featuring none other that Snoop D-O-Double-Gizzle, (or Snoop Lion, whichever you prefer) was published on June 8th, and in a matter of 12 hours had well over a million views.  This new, half-english, collaboration has an entrancing beat, and hopefully can be a worth successor to the world famous Gangnam style.

Dillon Francis & DJ Snake – Get Low (Official Video).

Biggie’s Back?

Biggie-Smalls-image-045

When it comes to reimagining some of hip hop’s most classic tracks, there have been some hits, and some misses, but Juicy from Biggie is one that few have dared to touch.  In the video below, Evil Dee takes a deep look into what made the tracks from Biggie and MTume so iconic.  Despite their minimal sound, Mtume was one of the most colorful funk and soul groups to emerge in the early ’80s. Their classic tune “Juicy Fruit” has been sampled often over the years, most notably in Notorious BIG’s “Juicy.” In this episode, Mtume talks about the tune and then takes us to a neighborhood boxing gym for a few rounds. Later, Da Beatminerz’s Evil Dee samples “Juicy Fruit” yet again, showing off his skills on one of hip hop’s iconic machines: the SP-1200.  Check the method.

‘What You Sippin On’ x ‘Fill Ur Cup Up’ Twerk Mix.

-8DJ remixes have been an essential staple of the music game for quite some time now, but their importance has been lost over recent years to the sheer number of basic, low level mashups that scatter the internet.  Luckily DJ Kay Rich, and my mentor Clayton William have created a twerk mix that stands apart from the crowd.  This impressive combination feature Milla, D Mac, Sage The Gemini, The Kid Ryan, and Syrup.  Definitely worth putting in your playlist, either as a casual listener, or a DJ.  Check the method below.

Serato Icon Artist Series – Just Blaze.

justblaze

The latest addition to the Serato Icon Artist Series is Just Blaze. Just Blaze is an artist who evolves. He has seamlessly blended his career as one of Hip Hop’s most influential producers with his ongoing career as a DJ, which in 2014, is stronger than ever. His ability to adapt and his hunger to experience and take advantage of what’s new, have kept Just Blaze at the cutting edge of music.

Katy Perry ft. Juicy J – Dark Horse (Official Video).

70111374049834Katy Perry’s newest video ‘Dark Horse’ (aside from being well put together, and just all around interesting to watch) is being criticized by some members of the Muslim community.  Apparently there is some symbolism surrounding a certain necklace in the video, and it’s destruction.  Criticisms aside, we think the video is just fine. But if you can pick out what all the fuss is about, let us know what you think.

Cassidy – Surfboard (Drunk In Love Remix).

cassidy-surfboard-500x500It’s not uncommon in hip hop that artist add their personal take onto a popular song.  But Cassidy’s remaining of “Drunk In Love” is an animal all it’s own.  Take a listen below to how Dolla Bill Kidz set up Beyonce’s vocals, and how Cassidy knocked them down.

Diplo ft. Angger Dimas & Travis Porter – Biggie Bounce (Official Video).

diplo

Diplo has had some extremely impressive collaborative credits under his belt, some of which may even border on unusual.  But regardless of which Diplo produced songs you like, and which you may not prefer, ‘Biggie Bounce’ is one to check out.  The track itself stands alone, but the style, concept, and execution of the video is unique in a way that’s more than noteworthy.  Check the method below.

Busta Rhymes, Azaealia Banks & Beyonce – Partition Remix.

busta-rhymes-banks-beyonce-partition-leadazealia-banks-600x450You may have noticed Busta Rhymes and Azealia Banks singing one another’s praises on Twitter last week. “@AzealiaBanks is a Genius with her art!!!! #REALRAP,” Busta wrote. “Just made a banger.” Turns out the collab was for a remix of Beyoncé highlight “Partition”, which features a cold-open from Busta and new verses from both.  Check the method below.

Redman’s Muddy Waters 2 Mixtape Sampler.

Redman_ReadyRoc_20091014_443Redman has been a favorite of mine while I was growing up, and later on I realized the New Jersey doesn’t have that many representatives when it comes to Hip Hop.  That being said, anything Red throws out, I pay close attention to.  But the Muddy Waters 2 mixtape sounds incredible compared to most of whatever else is coming out of my home state.  The only reason I can say that is because of the video Redman and his engineer dropped recently showcasing the tape.  Check the method below.

DUCKWRTH – Fukushima (Official Video).

tumblr_mvg4h22hKa1ru1p3mo1_1280

Duckwrth, aside from being featured on this blog many-a-time, also has a constant track record of creating some of the most refreshingly original music I’ve personally heard.  His newest beast Fukushima was produced by Viktorstone, and puts Duck’s candid flow on full display. The video is about Duckwrth and crew attempting to catch “The Fukushima Creature” before it gets to the beach and poisons the ocean. Blended with some amazing skating scenes and humorous outtakes, Fukushima serves to be not just only an unique and creative video, but a way to inform the world on the Nuclear waste in Japan that threatens our oceans today.  Check the method below.

Garrion Black – Clarity Remix.

The ‘Dark Ice Cream’ EP peaked in success around 2.2 million downloads a few weeks ago, and Jeff Phantom, Rich Lyfestyle, Joe Major, Clayton William and myself couldn’t have been more pleased.  But with the success of the 5 track production, now comes the first remix of our remix.  The ‘Clarity’ remix, a track conceptualized by DJ Jeff Phantom and Rich Lyfestyle, had recently had some hip-hop pumped into its veins by Garrison Black, and the artwork conceptualized by ForrDesign demonstrates the new life of the song.  The multifaceted artist added his piece to the trap remix in spectacular fashion, and even cleverly shouted out every track on ‘Dark Ice Cream’ showing lyrical skill other emcees should be jealous of.  Click the pic above to download the new version via SoundCloud.

Ciara – Body Party (DJ Storm & Joe Major Remix).

The concept of a “Body Party” wasn’t a prevalent one until Ciara’s newest hit single.  The vibe and essence of the track was one that I was infatuated with, and that with a slow, sensual, but memorable track, it was only right that Joe Major and myself put our spin on it.    After only one day in the lab, we came up with a remix that kept all best parts of the original, but had our own essence to it.  Click the pic above to download the mix.

In today’s music industry, production is crucial to having a career that pays the bills.  When I was growing up, production equipment was expensive or under-developed, and East Coast beats were relatively simple.  I always considered it a disadvantage that I never learned to produce when I was younger, and with a co-DJ (Jeff Phantom) who hadn’t make a deep trek into the production realm, I didn’t think we’d be able to pull off our own music without years of practice.  Luckily veteran producers Joe Major, Rich Lyfestyle, and Clayton William put themselves at our disposal to help DJ Jeff Phantom and myself come up with a project that let us flex our production wings.

NoIdeaPic

The 5 track EP features original remixes of songs from Zedd, Lil Wayne, Katya, Outkast, and even a take on classical music.  Trap as a genre is something that’s growing, weather it’s a fad or not remains to be seen, but what Jeff Phantom and I wanted to do was put a trap twist on some classic, new classic, and classical tracks.  Both Phantom and I teamed up with different producers to get the sounds we wanted in the tracks that we chose, and to take a listen, click or scan the photo below to download.

Miguel featuring Kendrick Lamar – How Many Drinks (Remix)

miguel-how-many-drinks-thelavalizard

After releasing a remixed version of “How Many Drinks,” the power duo of Miguel and Kendrick Lamar return with the visual accompaniment to the song. The music video preserves a sense of classic R&B, with Miguel truly channeling his inner all-around showman – performing nifty leg twists while boasting an expansive vocal range. Kendrick and Miguel seem to have a great deal of fun in the video, which serves as a suitably mellow parallel to an already silky track.
