Now in its fifth year, Fool’s Gold Day Off has sustained itself as the one-day event that harmonizes the unity between electronic dance and hip-hop artistry. The five-show series kicked off last Saturday in Los Angeles, and to get fans more acquainted with what’s in store, label head A-Trak has delivered an hour-long promotional feature.

The official Fool’s Gold Day Off 2015 Mix features artists who are performing on this year’s tour, like gLAdiator, Flosstradamus, and Laidback Luke. The mix weaves and swerves between infectious club-ready singles and trap bangers, once again showcasing A-Trak’s legendary mixing abilities.

International tours, EDC appearances, Festival sets, Vegas gigs, and never ending music studio hours can do a good job of keeping two friends apart. But for the first time in over a year, DJ Storm and DJ Jeff Phantom have teamed up again for another multi-genre mish-mash of mashups. ‘Get Out Of Jail Free’ sticks closer to the the electronic music side of the fence, and where it does feature hip hop, it does so with remixes.  However, the ebb and flow of the 65 minute long mix features a range from House, to Twerk, to Trap that is sure to keep any listener entertained.  Check out a demo below, and click the photo above to download.

User Review: Neon Dreams – By Victoria Fisher.

NeonDreamsFINAL

As we are reaching the mid way point of 2014, electronic dance music (better known as EDM) has progressively taken over the music industry. With concerts and festivals that fill the summer, no matter what coast you live on you are more than likely pumping your fist or nodding your head to some awesome beat drop.

edc2

More well known DJs are now more often making longer songs that can last as long as over an hour straight; these are known as sets. The ability to keep somebody’s attention for more than the duration of a regular song (3-5 minutes) can be pretty difficult; especially if your music is not carrying a focus on the lyrical context. EDM is all about how the music makes you feel; the journey that it takes you and your mind on when listen to it. The Neon Dreams Compilation track by DJ Storm & Jeff Phantom (with a total duration of 1 hour 13 minutes and 30 seconds) does just that- takes you on an amazing musical journey.

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH

When I was first shown the track, I thought “Omg an hour?  Okay  well I’m already in for the night, I’ll just put it in on and let it rock.” And I did just that… best decision ever! The music is both soothing and energizing; the lyrics are not heavy in context but they provide just the right amount of coupling next to the beats that change consistently and smoothly. The next thing I thought about was how much I wanted to download it and go in at the gym to it! EDM music always helps me run like Forrest when I get on the treadmill and I knew that Neon Dreams was a perfect fit.

djstorm24

As the song progresses, I became more entranced and excited to see what was coming next. Every song perfectly transitioned into the next, which is something that not every DJ is able to do. Transitions can really make or break a compilation and DJ Storm & Jeff Phantom straight up nailed it. Perhaps one of my favorite qualities of this song is that I want to listen to it at all hours of the day or night. Whether I am heading out to the club with my friends or just starting my work day at 8am, I cannot stop listening to this track. The music of it has become infectious in all the best ways possible. With dope beats and lyrics that partner it perfectly; Neon Dreams has easily become one of my favorite EDM compilations that I have ever heard. If it is any hint of how much I enjoy it; in the past week I have listened to the song in its entirety probably close to 6 or 7 times. That is not including the times that I started the song but was not able to finish it because I had to do other things (like work-LAME).

StormandPhantom copy

DJ Storm & Jeff Phantom have made a pretty dope premiere of their musical abilities meeting. Neon Dreams is universally musically intriguing. As I write this at 9am I am definitely listening to it, beats bumping and fist pumping. Give the track a listen and be sure to let us know what you think!

Every group has times where doing their own thing is necessary.  Outkast put out two separate individual albums, Fergie had a career solo from ‘The Black Eyed Peas’, Lauren Hill has her ties to the Fugees, but still rocked out on her own, Gwen Stephani was quite comfortable making music without ‘No Doubt’… and then Robin went all Nightwing on Batman.  It makes a group proud when an individual puts musical magic out into the world solo style.  That being said, me and the entire Stark Contrast crew can’t stop listening to Jeff Phantom’s newest release “Strangers Find You”.  This eloquent mix of Seven Lions, MS54, and Zedd, can be found on Phantom’s Soundcloud by clicking the photo above.  Check him out.

On an average of about once a month, DJ Jeff Phantom and I got together since February to put out some podcast mixes that started with Project X, and are now culminating in the 30 minute mix session titled ‘Swerve’.  With it being half Hip Hop, and half Electro/House/Dubstep, tons of ideas, mashups, and remixed were thrown around during the early phase of putting things together, but in the end we felt it was just best to just rock live on the turn tables for about 15 minutes each.  Click the player below to listen, and we hope you enjoy.

Top 10 Sexiest Female DJ’s.

Art can be a beautiful thing, no matter what the premise.  There’s no doubt in my mind that DJ’ing is an art form, and some of the sounds that it creates are nothing short of beautiful.  Luckily for us, if the person creating that art is beautiful as well, its not a bad thing.  No one really cared what Picasso looked like, just that his work was unique.  People weren’t lining up around the corner to take a picture with Edvard Munch, we just know his famous painting “The Scream”.  And lets be honest… Frida was not the baddest b*tch on the block.  But in this day in age, male fans are blessed to have some very attractive, and very talented artists to listen to.  Below is a list of potentially the top 10 sexiest female Disk Jockeys on Earth, and before I get a flock of emails telling me that ‘such-and-such‘ does look as good as ‘whats-her-face‘ let me just remind you that as a DJ myself, talent is sexy.  So listen to some of the work before you judge the looks.

DJ Storm ft. Lil Wayne, Cam’ron, GOV, Lil Kim & Three 6 Mafia – ‘Hott Sauce’.

Click the pic to listen.

Weather many folks are familiar with “The Mix Up” or not, it remains one of my favorite collections of music ever. (And I SWEAR it’s not just because I made it). The “album” consists of just under a dozen tracks that are comprised of main stream rap lyrics blended with more classic/underground hip hop beats and sprinkled with tons of samples from popular culture. The premise and subject matter of each song is different and each song has it’s own particular flavor, but my favorite track to this day is “Hott Sauce”. I have a bit of a fascination/addiction to the little physical act described in the song, and listening to it makes me laugh every single time. With lyrics from Lil Wayne, GOV, Cam’ron, Three 6 Mafia and Lil Kim, “Hott Sauce” is not one to play in front of your parents, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy it none the less.  Click the pic to listen.

A Pimp With Two Paddles And Some PVC Pipes.

I tend to get thrown some crazy videos when I’m working with my staff on blog posts, but I rarely bounce them onto the blog simply because I don’t really relate to it, or its honestly just not that good.  The video below however is falls into neither of those categories.  With all the research I’ve done, I still can’t find this kid’s name for the life of me, but he deserves a medal, or record deal, or a blowjob from every girl that was in the room while he pulled off this performance.  Said genius below starts off playing a tune on a cleverly constructed (yet simplistic) PVC pipe organ wit two paddles, and plays for about 6 minutes.  Now being a DJ, I know how hard it can be to transition between songs on turntables while keeping the audience interested, not making every transition the same, bridging the gap between genres, keeping the BPM’s the same, and playing songs that any given group of listeners will enjoy… all at the same time.  But I could never imagine doing that ALL with two paddles and some PVC pipe.  Check the awesomeness below… and wait till the very last song when his surprise guest jumps in and gets busy.

Photos of Sakurajima Volcano.

On a visit to Japan in 2010, “alien landscape” photographer Martin Rietze captured some spectacular images of Sakurajima volcano in Kagoshima, and the images flew all across photography sites the world over.  I’ve seen this incredibly beautiful collection of images tons of times, but something today just struck me, and I thought that although I see this collection all the times doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone else has… So I figured I’d share it.

Kaws x Hennessy Limited Edition V.S Bottle.

Since my birthday is just around the corner, I’ve been in a little bit of a drinking mood, and searching for somethign special to buy for myself.  When I heard that Hennessy announced yesterday their exclusive Hennessy V.S bottle collaborative project with world-renowned artist, KAWS, I was disappointed I’d have to wait till it hits shelves in September 2011.  Each Kaws Hennessy V.S bottle features signature Kaws artwork and is individually numbered, making this collectors item that much more special.  The Hennessy KAWS V.S bottle will be sold in 750ml sizes and will retail for $29.99.  The new bottle design will debut later in July at a private launch event in NYC.  In addition to the limited edition bottle, the duo will create multiple digital shorts, which will be distributed throughout the year.

I’ve worked with ton’s of artists on different projects from all around the globe, but its always refreshing to find great talent when you weren’t looking for it.  The female emcee KJ represents just that, a lyrical smack in the face, just when you thought it was a good day.  Click the pic to take a listen to the freestyle track “Practice Round” to hear KJ prove her skills without even trying.  To learn more about KJ, just read below.

Born in the Bay Area in Hayward, California, K.J. grew up with a musician family. Raised by her mother in a single parent home, she was brought up in the C.O.G.I.C. church learning to play many instruments by ear. Her love of music flows through her bloodstream as music is the architecture in her heart. She fell in love with Hip-Hop at age 12, when listening to artists like Da Brat, MC Lyte and Southern California’s own Snoop Dogg. Being inspired by the sound of a beat K.J. she began to compose songs from the heart and tell stories from a woman’s perspective. Representing the Female MC’s throughout high school upgrading to local music competitions and performances. Moving to Ohio to receive her second degree K.J. was discovered by producer William “Dino” Perry and 3rd Eye Enterprise. K.J.’s music brings a hype, crunk and different style to ordinary music. While very hardworking and full of potential energy K.J. is the “Hyphy” new sound for all to hear. Third Eye Enterprise is an inspiration to K.J. to keep pursuing the music and make it “feel good” for the people.

A DJ Storm Christmas Treat.

Click the pic to download.

YES, I’m well aware that Christmas is OVER. But the day after christmas, I was trapped in the house, snowed in with my parents, and got so stir-crazy that I started chopping up christmas songs like the ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre”.  I got inspired when I realized that ‘Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer’ has the same BPM as 50 Cent’s – “I Get Money”, so I proceeded to mix, mash, and smush every song I could think of (that fit appropriately) into the collection.  What came about as the end result is something I put to accompany some photos of my christmas day, but when tons of people ended up asking me where they could download the song, I figured I’d put it up online for the folks.  So take a listen and enjoy… And keep in mind that next year when your family starts boring Christmas songs you hate, that you have something a bit more spicy to keep you entertained.

Mp3 Player/CD Player Hybrid

You want to enjoy your audio CDs while traveling but you also have a huge MP3 collection at home that you want to take with you. The ideal solution? DMP, a portable music player that supports CD and MP3 files. Use the MP3 player as you normally would, hang it around your neck, clip it on your jeans or place it in your pocket. Otherwise open both sides and insert your favorite CD and you got yourself a CD player my friend. Now that’s music to my ears.

‘Hawaii West’ x DJ Storm

Recently, thanks to one of my newest favorite bartenders, I spoke with the owner of San Francisco’s ‘Hawaii West’ bar about producing a mix CD last week, and I’ve been laying the framework ever since. The tracks and mixes on the CD will reflect both the atmosphere of the bar, and the diverse tastes of some of the patrons. Due to other business obligations, I don’t have the same time frame as I did with ‘Cocktails & Condoms’, so I’m going to concentrate my efforts and blast this one out much quicker with the same quality as my other mixes which will be a challenge. So stay tuned for more details coming very soon.

Behind The Scenes: ‘Cocktails & Condoms’

Recently I set plans under way to shoot the cover of Cocktails & Condoms. My lead photographer Unni R. was also on hand to shoot a short video of our model getting her eye and cheek makeup done.  The footage looked amazing, and I thought it’d be a good way to get some more people interested in the music that will make up the final version of this new project.  So below is the video I edited together of the make up session.  I know everything may be a bit vague, but more details about Cocktails & Condoms will be coming VERY very soon.

Dat Carlo P.

Every once in a while I get the urge to collab with another artist on music, graphic design, or any other project that catches my interest.  This time I thought I’d take it out of the box a bit, and just collab with a casual friend of mine.  A few weeks ago I had my homeboy Carlo Palencia drop me a list of some of his favorite jams, from Hip Hop to House, and I would take them and mash them up.  The mix starts with some good Hip Hop from Jadakiss, and continues into tracks featuring Lil Wayne, Fabolous, Ludacris, and T-Pain.  Along a slpash of dancehall, the second half of the mix is layered with the surly bass of various house tracks, and not only showcases Carlo’s vastly broad taste in music, but displays a wide variety of music in a simple 16 minutes.  If you might be interested in shooting me a list of songs you’d like to hear mashed up club style, just hit me up, and we can work something out.  Click the pic below to download “Dat Carlo. Electric Boogaloo

I am a firm believer in the saying practice makes perfect.  I take about 1 to 2 hours every day to mix, scratch, and cut all different types of music.  Occasionally I’ll record my sessions in an attempt to fix my mistakes, and once in a while I’ll do something off the top of my head that I’m very happy with.  This 8 minute take of a mixing session already debuted on http://www.djstorm.com a few weeks ago, but due to an overwhelming demand for a download link, I’m putting up on the blog.  So here for your enjoyment, “Electro”.
