Josh Johnson has been being recognized for the wrong things this year. The rapid pace at which he puts jokes out to the world is often the highlight of most of the pieces about him. The fact that he can display jokes on social media, and not repeat them in any of the material that he reserves for futures shows is typically his highlight. The majority of his praise is aimed at his ability to be versatile and ever changing… yet in so many reviews, it can be understated just HOW FUNNY he actually is. The newest addition to Johnson’s online repertoire ‘Freshman 15’ that was just released on YouTube yesterday ,is a show that no one, no matter how closely they follow him online, has heard before.
Needless to say it was quite impressive. The lead up to the show it self is only topped on a conceptual level by the way that it is interwoven into the entire hour. You begin from before the show and its lead up, which is displayed as the show progresses, which leaves them “meeting in the middle”. Josh’s flashbacks end when he hits the stage, and his stage show ends at the same time. (If we made that breakdown was too confusing, just watch the whole hour for yourself). Topics from taxes to taking the wrong drugs showcase comedic creativity, and show skills of veteran comics, like beginning with your second best joke first, and ending with your funniest material. All in all, ‘Freshman 15’ in a wonderfully produced and performed show, that may not leave the audience yearning for more, ONLY because he has so much more material out there to watch. Check out ‘Freshman 15’ below.
The only thing left to wonder is why it wasn’t on Netflix?
