Bioworkz

What is Bioworkz?
I’ve always been inspired by H.R. Giger and his work has been defined as “Biomechanics”. Early in my artistic career, I created lots of biomechanical illustrations. That’s how I came up with the moniker BioWorkZ. It’s a moniker I’ve been using since college and it has stuck with me since.

Who is Ben Kwok?

BioWorkZ a.k.a. Ben Kwok is an L.A. based graphic artist and illustrator. Born in Taiwan, raised in Los Angeles, art has always been a huge part of my life. When I could first use chopsticks, I was already doodling on whatever I could get my hands on. I love complex hyper detailed artwork. To lose myself into the “flow” of drawing is about as good as it gets. I’m very passionate about what I do, that’s why I continue doing it.

I was heavily influenced by the works of H.R. Giger, Alfonse Mucha. Now, I find myself being drawn into type/lettering inspired artwork. Especially works by Aaron Horkey, and David A. Smith. Their attention to detail is simply amazing. I can only hope to get as good or come close to their caliber.

Apparel

I’ve been in the apparel business for almost 8 years. Early in my career, I was lucky enough to work at a silk screen print house. Learning to separate colors, burning screens, mixing colors, understanding different inks, how they react with different fabrics. Experimenting with mesh count, testing the outcome of different combination of inks and fabrics. Ultimately, understanding the limitations of how the artwork will translate best once printed onto the garment.

Been with several apparel companies and had the opportunity to work freelance with many more. I am confident I can deliver the right image with the right style. From Mens, Womens, Juniors, Tweens, Kids, and Babies. I’ve done it all and will continue to polish my portfolio. I welcome a challenge…how else will I get better?

Illustration
Highly detailed, rendered, polished illustration is what I strive for. I want the artwork to pull the viewer in and hold them hostage. I want the image to be initially striking, and when the viewer gets up close and personal, I want the image to unfold into greater details while the viewer absorbs the intricacies and attention to little details. That’s what I personally love about illustrations and that how I would like my art to be perceived.
