Bedrooms By The Tech-Giants?

It’s unlikely that companies like Apple or Facebook will ever foray into designing home interiors, but a little wishful thinking never hurt anybody. In this post we look at conceptual bedrooms, designed with the language and characteristics of 6 of today’s technology giants.  Right above is the conceptual Apple bedroom. Looking like someone cleared out an Apple Store and put a bed in there, there’s something very pure and pristine about the interiors. Undeniably Apple, right? Designed to look sensible and straightforward, the room comes with a white interior, a full sized window (or should we call it a bezel-less window?!), and even trees within glass enclosures. Elaborate, opulent, yet clean.

Then comes Facebook’s bedroom. Using blue to bring a fun-yet-not-garish vibe to the bedroom, the interiors make use of signature facebook elements, from FB reactions, to neon likes, wallpaper made of personalized messages on the left, to even a literal brick wall on the right that reminds you of the time when you “would write on peoples’ walls” on Facebook. Oh, and I love the cheeky wardrobe in the corner with the grey tees.

Everything about Google’s bedroom screams fun. Using Google’s brand colors and going completely nuts with the decor, the Google bedroom is more fun and vibrant than an environment conducive to sleep. Swing, slide, foosball table, and a literal faux grass playground, you’re much more likely to work from home in the Google bedroom.  The Netflix bedroom takes chilling very seriously. A TV with a home theater, stocked refrigerator, lounge-sofa, and a bed that looks oh-so-inviting, you’re bound to stay in bed and binge-watch your favorite shows. The interiors look quite like a theater with low-key lighting and the use of red gives it the signature Netflix flavor. Points if you notice the colorful lights near the window that do a hat-tip to Netflix’s Stranger Things.

Snapchat’s bedroom perfectly captures the whims and fancies of its young demographic. Ridiculously adolescent, the bedroom comes in Snapchat’s shade of yellow, balloons and streamers everywhere much like Snapchat’s flamboyant filters, and a hammock for a bed. Oh, there’s a photobooth too, given how Snapchat and selfies have such a strong relationship.  Lastly we have Spotify, a company so devoted to music that it makes sense the bedroom echoes that feeling too. With graphiti on the wall that literally screams MUSIC, wall-mounted records, a live-karaoke wall that displays lyrics (with 16 speakers on each side) complete with two microphones, and a light-up dance floor, the Spotify bedroom sets the perfect mood for a bedroom party. Besides, you can turn things down a notch too and bust out some sweet tunes as you head to the circular Spotify-logo-inspired bed.

The above 6 bedrooms do a pretty spot-on job (maybe too spot-on) of taking the ethos and characteristics of the 6 tech giants and translating them into spaces… a design exercise by the name of Product Semantics that we’ve covered in great detail in the past. There’s no guarantee that these spaces will ever exist, but it’s a wonderful design practice to familiarize oneself with brand languages, product languages, and learn how you can use them to make products (and in this case, spaces) look like they belong to a certain brand family. Hey designers, could we see a few more? Microsoft, Instagram, Whatsapp, Twitter, for starters?

Smarty Ring

Smarty-Ring-5

Smart watches have been all the rage on the tech scene, but we’ve yet to see a smart ring. Well that’s exactly what Smarty Ring is, and seeing that they just surpassed their goal on IndieGoGo, this concept may soon become a reality. Rather than having to pull out your phone a hundred times a day to check for updates on Facebook, you can now get all of your text, chat, and social network notifications sent right to your fingers. Utilizing Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology, this smart ring will work on both iOS and Android powered devices (with an interactive app built for both), and also lets users manage their calls from their fingers as well. You can do everything from accepting/rejecting incoming calls to speed dial and emergency calls. There’s even a built-in butt call alert for those accidental dials. The Smarty Ring also comes with a built-in clock that displays five different time zones, and even includes a stop watch as well for training in the gym. The ring itself is crafted from allergy free surgical stainless steel, uses LED lights for the display, and includes a wireless charger.

Facebook Fans Design Their Own Porsche 911

Facebook-Porsche-911

In order to celebrate the fact that the German sportscar maker has hit the 5 million Facebook Friends mark, it invited its virtual pals to design a one-off 911, based on the Carrera 4S platform, and to put features and specifications to the vote. The finished result is an aqua or ‘Facebook’ blue 911 with black and white racing stripes and a fixed rear spoiler. It sits on white 20-inch white alloys and its doors are embellished with the words “5m Porsche Fans”. Inside the illuminated door sills and the aluminum dashboard trim both feature the phrase “personally built by 5 million Porsche fans.” Porsche claims that over 54,000 Facebook fans took part in the design process and, now that the creation phase is over.

Grasping For A Vine… Video For Instagram?

url

Instagram plans to release a video product this Thursday at a press event at Facebook’s headquarters, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter, marking the first time the robust, 100-million user network will stray from being strictly a photo-sharing app and dive head first into the world of moving pictures.

The new video product is something that the service said it was planning to do for two years now, and there have been numerous rumors about it in recent weeks. As was first reported by TechCrunch, it’s actually going to happen this week. Sources said that Thursday’s event will solely be focused on Instagram’s new video product and there will be no other Facebook product reveals.

While details of the product have been kept under wraps, sources said Facebook is seeking to differentiate itself from Vine, the popular instant video app from Twitter, which is now available on both Apple iPhone and Google Android. It recently announced that Vine has 13 million users.

Mobiado and Aston Martin Show Transparent Droid Phone Concept

gsmarena_001

Mobiado, the luxury phone maker, and Aston Martin, the luxury car maker, are in cahoots, trying to co-create phones. The first prototype they’ve shown is a stunning transparent Android phone. The Mobiado concept phone is called CTP002 is basically one big, transparent sapphire glass with two titanium edges on the left and right. The glass is a color capacitive touchscreen. We know it’s only a concept and from a technical standpoint it seems all but impossible, but the Mobiado CTP002 is a joy to behold. The phone will connect with the car and its display. The car display will show a map with all local venues and your friends from Foursquare. The cameras integrated into the car can be set to snap a photo periodically and post it on Facebook or Twitter and the CTP002’s accelerometer will track the drivers body in case of a collision, giving the car’s airbags better information on how to react. The Mobiado CTP002 concept will be shown off at BaselWorld, the world watch and jewelry show in Switzerland this year.

The Facebook Infographic.

It’s no mystery that the Facebook phenomenon has no signs of slowing down or stopping anytime soon.  But after one of Facebook’s higher ups opted to sell some of her shares of the now publicly traded company, people have been wondering whats been going on.  An incredibly informative video infographic by Jacques Parys may not explain the inner working of the company, but for sure sheds some light on some statistics surrounding the largest social network on the planet.  Check the method.

Your Facebook Is False.

The character of Dwight Schrute has not only become a much-loved staple of television, but also a series of popular memes entitled “Schrute Facts” based on his series of “False!” retorts to just about anything. Which is why it’s so great to see actor Rainn Wilson bring the character and meme to life in the real world by reading some random tweets in the video above and giving his trademark analysis and thoughts about their validity.  Check it out.

The Instagram Socialmatic Concept Camera

Since Facebook has bought Instagram for nearly a billion dollars in cash and stock, many users, bloggers, economy experts have thought Instagram could build its first real photo camera. Imagine to pick the Instagram App icon and now imagine it as real camera. This is the main idea of ADR Studio at the base of Instagram Socialmatic Concept. A social camera with 16 GB mass storage, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, optical zoom, webcam apps, QR Code capturing, LED flash, internal printer, 4:3 touchscreen and 2 main lenses with possibility to put on some 3D filters. With the integrated printer you could print out your photography directly on Instagram Paper Sheets. Every Instagram printed photo reports your Instagram nickname and a QR code on the frontside.

Facebook Just Wifed Up Instagram.

Instagram rocketed to 30 million iOS users in 18 months and was named iPhone app of the year in 2011. It is one of the best apps for taking and sharing photos from the iPhone. Its square images and assorted image filters let anyone make retro, techno and pretty pictures out of mundane shots of their kids, pets, food. Instagram’s Android version, released last week, got millions of downloads immediately. But $1 billion, if true, is still a crazy number. Instagram doesn’t make any money. Nor did it say it was focusing on revenue. It is still chasing big users. Kevin Systrom, Instagram’s CEO, wrote this to calm down his users in response to the deal. An excerpt:

It’s important to be clear that Instagram is not going away. We’ll be working with Facebook to evolve Instagram and build the network. We’ll continue to add new features to the product and find new ways to create a better mobile photos experience.

It’s not clear what the Facebook deal means for the Series B funding round that may have closed last week, led by Sequoia Capital, Thrive, Benchmark and Greylock at a reported $500 million valuation. But the fact that Facebook would pay 2x what the company was supposedly worth within a week’s time suggests this is a defensive move. Facebook has the money (almost $4 billion in cash on hand as of December 2011), and certainly isn’t desperate for more users, most if not all of whom are already on Facebook (which greatly influences the price-per-new-active-user Facebook is paying. See crude math below.)

Fred Wilson has said that Facebook is really about photos and this only underscores that. The mobile-social photo sector is still amorphously led but if anyone is harmed by this deal it is Yahoo. Facebook is really going after its Flickr property here, to put the nail further in Yahoo’s coffin. (To its discredit, Yahoo hasn’t done anything with Flickr lately). Zuckerberg is playing chess, making a defining move in how it stands in the photo space. It’s like what Google did with YouTube.

One problem this will solve for Instagram’s 30-something million users is that sharing an Instagram photo on Facebook from your phone pretty much sucks right now. Here comes the much needed integration: bigger photos, more detailed info about the filters, etc. Right now all you get when you post an Instagram photo on Facebook from your phone is a small link and a thumbnail image. A better integration will stimulate more sharing through Instagram.

But a $1 billion for 30 million users that pay nothing for the service? Sounds crazy but consider this: Instagram is getting bought for $33 per user. Facebook is supposedly trading with a market cap of close to $100 billion and has 850 million users, giving it a value of $117 per user. So it looks like a decent bit of funny-money arbitrage, using well-endowed Facebook shares to acquire users and solidify hold of a strategic asset at a lower valuation. We don’t yet know how much of the deal is in cash vs. stock, so this calculation could be less favorable sounding but it still makes sense with Facebook currency.

Here’s a video Forbes editor Michael Noer did with Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom for our 30 Under 30 special. According to Wired’s Mike Isaac, Systrom netted $400 million from the sale.

Do You Know Who’s Watching You?

Bono To Become A Facebook Billionaire.

U2 rocker Bono is about to make $1 billion, thanks to his 2009 investment in Facebook.  Bono’s investment company Elevation Partners bought $210 million worth of shares in the social networking site almost two years ago.  This week, the site has been valued at $65 billion, meaning that Bono and his company’s share of the business is now valued at a whopping $975 million.  U2 are already one of the world’s highest-earning groups, pulling in more than $736 million on their recent 360 Tour.  To put his possible wealth into perspective – currently Sir Paul McCartney, is the richest rock star in the world with a wealth estimated at $600 to $750 million.

11 Things NOT To Put On Facebook.

According to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s unofficial mission is to make “the world more open and connected.” But there are limits to how open you should be on Facebook and while you might enjoy sharing photos and status updates, there are some pieces of information you would do well never to share.

Who’s watching your moves on Facebook? Employers, stalkers, federal agents, and even insurance companies have been known to scan Facebook profiles for information. Just as troubling are reports of Facebook account hackers, who put users at risk for identity fraud. Even if you safeguard personal information with a “Friends Only” setting, there is a chance you’ve friended someone whom you barely know or have never met.  So watch out folks, you never know who’s looking.

S

Your Birth Date And Place

While it might be nice to hear from Facebook well-wishers on your birthday, you should think twice before posting your full birthday. Beth Givens, executive director of the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse advises that revealing your exact birthday and your place of birth is like handing over your financial security to thieves. Furthermore, Carnegie Mellon researchers recently discovered that they could reconstruct social security numbers using an individual’s birthday and place of birth.  Rather than remove your birthday entirely, you could enter a date that’s just a few days off from your real birthday.

S

Your Mother’s Maiden Name

“Your mother’s maiden name is an especially valuable bit of information, not least since it’s often the answer to security questions on many sites,” writes the New York Times. Credit card companies, your wireless service provider, and numerous other firms frequently rely on this tidbit to protect your personal information.

S

Your Home Address

Publicizing your home address enables everyone and anyone with whom you’ve shared that information to see where you live, from exes to employers. Opening up in this way could have negative repercussions: for example, there have been instances in which burglars have used Facebook to target users who said they were not at home.

S

Any Trips Away From Home

CBSMoneyWatch.com warns social network users that counting down the days to a vacation can be as negligent as stating how many days the vacation will last. “There may be a better way to say ‘Rob me, please’ than posting something along the lines of: ‘Count-down to Maui! Two days and Ritz Carlton, here we come!’ on a social networking site. But it’s hard to think of one. Post the photos on Facebook when you return, if you like. But don’t invite criminals in by telling them specifically when you’ll be gone,” MoneyWatch writes.  Don’t post status updates that mention when you will be away from home, advises New York Times columnist Ron Lieber. When you broadcast your vacation dates, you might be telling untrustworthy Facebook “friends” that your house is empty and unwatched. “Remind ‘friends’ that you have an alarm or a guard dog,” Lieber writes.  Although new features like Facebook Places encourage you to check in during outings and broadcast your location (be it at a restaurant, park, or store), you might think twice even before sharing information about shorter departures from your home. “Don’t post messages such as ‘out for a run’ or ‘at the mall shopping for my sweetie,'” Identity Theft 911 cautions. “Thieves could use that information to physically break in your house.”

S

Your Inappropriate Photos

By now, nearly everyone knows that racy, illicit, or otherwise incriminating photos posted on Facebook can cost you a job (or worse). But even deleted photos could come back to haunt you. Ars Technica recently discovered that Facebook’s servers can store deleted photos for an unspecified amount of time. “It’s possible,” a Facebook spokesperson told Ars Technica, “that someone who previously had access to a photo and saved the direct URL from our content delivery network partner could still access the photo.”

S

Confessionals

Flubbing on your tax returns? Can’t stand your boss? Pulled a ‘dine and dash?’ Don’t tell Facebook. The site’s privacy settings allow you to control with whom you share certain information–for example, you can create a Group that consists only of your closest friends–but, once posted, it can be hard to erase proof of your illicit or illegal activities, and difficult to keep it from spreading.  There are countless examples of workers getting the axe for oversharing on Facebook, as well as many instances in which people have been arrested for information they shared on the social networking site. (Click here to see a few examples of Facebook posts that got people canned.)

S

Your Phone Number

Watch where you post your phone number. Include it in your profile and, depending on your privacy settings, even your most distant Facebook “friends” (think exes, elementary school contacts, friends-of-friends) might be able to access it and give you a ring. Sharing it with Facebook Pages can also get you in trouble. Developer Tom Scott created an app called Evil that displays phone numbers published anywhere on Facebook. According to Scott, “There are uncountable numbers of groups on Facebook called ‘lost my phone!!!!! need ur numbers!!!!!’ […] Most of them are marked as ‘public’, and a lot of folks don’t understand what that means in Facebook’s context — to Facebook, ‘public’ means everyone in the world, whether they’re a Facebook member or not.”

S

Your Child’s Name

Identity thieves also target children. “Don’t use a child’s name in photo tags or captions,” writes Consumer Reports. “If someone else does, delete it by clicking on Remove Tag.  If your child isn’t on Facebook and someone includes his or her name in a caption, ask that person to remove the name.”

S

Your ‘Risky’ Behavior

You take your classic Camaro out for street racing, soar above the hills in a hang glider, or smoke like a chimney? Insurers are increasingly turning to the web to figure out whether their applicants and customers are putting their lives or property at risk, according to Insure.com.  There have been additional reports that insurance companies may adjust users’ premiums based what they post to Facebook. Given that criminals are turning to high-tech tools like Google Street View and Facebook to target victims, “I wouldn’t be surprised if, as social media grow in popularity and more location-based applications come to fore, insurance providers consider these in their pricing of an individual’s risk,” says Darren Black, head of home insurance for Confused.com.

S

The Layout Of Your Home

Identity Theft 911 reminds Facebook users never to post photos that reveal the layout of an apartment or home and the valuables therein.

S

Your Profile On Public Search

Do you want your Facebook profile–even bare-bones information like your gender, name, and profile picture–appearing in a Google search? If not, you should should block your profile from appearing in search engine results. Consumer Reports advises that doing so will “help prevent strangers from accessing your page.” To change this privacy setting, go to Privacy Settings under Account, then Sharing on Facebook.

Ms. Jillian.

Once again I’m straying away from the typical video girls after coming across another beautiful “girl next door” on ‘Me In My Place’.  Jillian seems to be quite the star on the ‘MIMP’ site, amassing more fan mail than any of the other women combined.  Be it the superior lighting, or the skill of the photographer, there’s just something about Jillian’s pictures that are mesmerizing.  (Although the bio’s on these girls may be somewhat sparse…)  Props to the guys at ‘MIMP’ for finding some of the best women in NY.

10 Super Creative Facebook Layouts.

A few months back, Facebook revamped the profile layout; and we all know that some many users were complaining about the Facebook new profile page layout for a while. But, some more creative individuals made the best of the situation and started having fun with it, showing really serious creativity by taking advantage of Facebook new profile page photo layout.  I heard that it all started when a French Artist Alexandre Oudin began showing creativity with the profile images.  And since then, a trend has been set with more and more such designs are now emerging. Facebook users are playing around with their profile pics and creating awesome profile page using animations, photography, typography and videos.  Unfortunately just like everything else truly creative, other people try to profit off of it, and we wind up with website that let you pick a pre-made banner and plop it onto your page.  But here are a list of 10 people who chose to do something original before it was a fad.

If Facebook Was Around From The Begining Of Time…

I come across funny emails, and random posting all the time from fans, friends of people who try show me something they think is funny enough to be on this blog.  But when I got an email from a fan about Facebook, and what life would be like if it was around from the beginning of time.  Check the method below, courtesy of Davis Elgin and Cool Material.com.

My Top 30 Memories.

The 2002, December 4th Eclipse.

I was thinking recently about my future, and later on in life how I would describe world changing events of my past to my children as I experienced them.  We’ve all heard that a picture says 1,000 words, which in most cases is 100% true, so I dug up some collections of pictures and was able to comprise a set of 30 photos that exemplify some of the most important memories spanning the last decade or so.  The photos aren’t in chronological order (they’re a bit boring when arranged that way), and this isn’t every major event that’s happened since 2000, just the ones that I remember the most. Check the method below, and if you remember any of these events, let me know what you think, and your opinion of the pictures that represent them.  I’m extremely curious to hear what people have to say.

Check Out 5 Rediculously Nice Offices.

White Mountain Office

This office somewhat reminds me of the nuclear bunker in the end of Terminator 3 mixed with the Hall of the Legion of Doom. This old atomic shelter is now used by Swedish ISP. This really is a one of a kind work environment.

Red Bull London

This is probably one of my favorite offices. Partially because of the sleek minimalistic look, but mostly because of the dope carbon slide. Red Bull’s awesome 3 floor office was created by Jump Studios, an architecture company from London, UK.

JWT New York

JWT is one of the oldest advertising agencies in the world. This office is designed over five floors and designed to accommodate 900 employees. This office reflects JWT’s business model and brand identity and it was designed by the creative minds of Clive Wilkinson Architects.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Slovenia

This has to be the coolest government office I’ve ever seen. The organic looking white framework in combination with a lot of windows and tons of plants makes this office a real treat for your eyes.

Facebook

The new Facebook office is centred around employees needs and wants. Several small ‘neighbourhoods’ were created to give each department its own unique style. Employees are encouraged to write on walls, add artwork, and move furniture as they see fit.

Retro In The Present.

It’s a little known fact that I have a slight infatuation with retro propaganda, its honestly just really interesting to me, and it doesn’t get any better than when people take modern concepts and portray them in an accurate old school style.  (Much like the “Time Travelers” post I threw up about a month ago)  So when I came across a series of posters designed by the Moma Propaganda firm, I thought it was the coolest thing ever.  The ad campaign entitled “Everything Ages Fast” was created for the Maximidia Seminars, check the method.
