The First 6K, Red Dragon Footage Surfaces.

red_vogue_1

After a considerable delay from its slated late 2012 release date, the 6K Red Dragon sensor is finally ready — and it seems to have been worth the wait. The first test footage (after the break) has come from cinematographer and Red booster Mark Toia, who stress-tested it in difficult conditions like high contrast daylight and dark night scenes. Afterwards, he said the camera has three more f-stops of dynamic range than the MX-equipped Epic and thinks the new sensor brings the “best highlight falloff I’ve ever seen from any digital camera,” including Sony’s $65,000 CineAlta F65 4K model. Though Red put on a show of upgrading Epic and Epic-X cameras with Dragon earlier this spring, the company recently said that deliveries would start in September. Meanwhile, Dragon equipped cameras are in the hands of other notable DPs and directors too, like Peter Jackson, Michael Bay and Darius Woski — meaning you can likely expect a deluge of Dragon eye-candy over the coming weeks.

A Look At The Epic Lancia Stratos

lancia_74_stratos_02

The Italian classic Lancia Stratos is not only considered as one of the most iconic cars in WRC history, but as the first car ever to be designed purely for rally race performance. Claiming three consecutive champion titles in 1974, 1975 and 1976, the Stratos is still considered one of the most challenging, epic, and intriguing driving experiences today. Petrolicious chatted with Phillip Toledano about his experiences driving the iconic race model and discuses its “disastrous noises”, “intrusive” nature, and the intriguing “terror” felt while behind the wheel.

The Atmos 566 & Hour Glass.

Two years ago, to mark the 80th anniversary of the Atmos, Australian designer Marc Newson was given Carte Blanche to redesign the famous clock.  Surrounded by a baccarat crystal bubble, the pure, contemporary curves of the ‘Atmos 561’ by Marc Newson commanded immediate attention.  This year, the artist wished to renew his cooperation with Jaeger-Lecoultre.  Entranced by the magic of complex horological mechanisms, he has chosen to lend a new face to ‘Calibre 566’ which was featured in the Atmos Astronomique presented in 2008.

Two versions (a limited series of 28 in blue and another 48-piece translucent edition) showcase a cross between contemporary art and fine craftsmanship, and between technology and aesthetics.  The generously proportioned cabinet allows light to flood in
and illuminate the complicated mechanism.  The hours and minutes rub shoulders with the sky chart of the northern hemisphere, with the cardinal points and zodiac.  The months are displayed on a rotating disc at 6 o’clock along with the equation of time.

Recently Ikepod has teamed up with Marc Newson to make this time measuring sculpture in borosilicated glass (3mm thickness).  It’s filled with low carbon, or nickel plated nanoballs, and is a timer for 60 minutes (weight 6.7 kg / size 265 mm x 300 mm).

The Worlds Largest Rope Swing.

Moab, Utah became a playground for Devin Graham when he let loose on the world’s largest rope swing. An absolutely epic video.  Take a look at the actual video above, and the making of below.

17 Year-Old Emcee Gets RIPPED By His High School Teacher In A Rap Battle.

Normally I’m a bit more formal than this with posts, but BRAH…  This video.  I can’t.  I will probably watch this every day for the rest of my life.  Might even rip the audio and put it on my iPod.  I can’t even pick a favorite line, it’s just too good.  Never have I ever seen a teacher/student rap battle, in the U.K., in a real battle forum, but aside all that, this video still takes the cake.  I mean given that the teacher is a famous poet, this kid had to have known he’d be getting into a legitimate battle, but ho-ly-sh*t, that mom verse?  I did not see that coming at all.  My jaw literally dropped.  So score one for the teachers.  I bet Blizzard will never act out in class again.

Damn You Auto Correct.

For anyone who has a iPhone, we all know that the ‘Auto Correct’ feature can be the bane of your existence.  For anyone who’s never seen it… when you type a word the function presents you with the change before the next time you press the space bar.  Unfortunately, almost everyone types so fast that you don’t get a chance to see anything before you hit space, and before you know it, the phone has twisted your words into a more tragic wreck than the post above this one.  My best friend out of Miami recently posted up a list of 25 epic ‘auto correct fails’ that illustrates this very point, so read on to see just how bad it can get.
