Contemporary House Maza In Mexico

Contemporary-House-Maza-in-Mexico-1

The contemporary dwelling was completed back in 2012, and features 5,263 square feet of living space. The home is situated in a natural setting surrounding the Lake of Valle de Bravo, and blends nicely thanks to the lush vegetation running all throughout the home’s facade. In fact it’s almost difficult to tell where the outside ends, and the inside begins due largely in part to the massive floor to ceiling windows and doors that open the interior up completely to the outside elements. The residence has been equipped with a multi-car garage in the basement, and a tour through the house reveals individual spaces designed as scenes – providing a unique experience for visitors and residents alike.

Heydar Aliyev Center by Zaha Hadid Architects

01 02 03 04 05 07

Zaha Hadid Architects have designed the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Heydar Aliyev Center hosts a variety of cultural programs, its design is a departure from the rigid and often monumental architecture of the former Soviet Union that is so prevalent in Baku, aspiring instead to express the sensibilities and diversity of Azeri culture. The Center’s design establishes a continuous, fluid relationship between its surrounding plaza and the building’s interior. The plaza, as the ground surface, accessible to all, rises to envelop an equally public interior and define a sequence of event spaces within. Undulations, folds, and inflections modify this surface to create an architectural landscape that performs a multitude of functions: welcoming, embracing, and directing visitors throughout the center; blurring the conventional differentiation between architecture and landscape, interior and exterior. Fluidity in architecture is not new to the region. The continuous calligraphic scripts and patterning of historical Islamic architecture flow from carpets to walls, walls to ceilings, ceilings to domes; establishing seamless relationships and blurring distinctions between architectural elements and the ground they inhabit. The Center’s design relates to this historical understanding of architecture, not through the use of mimicry or a limiting adherence to the iconography of the past, but with a firmly contemporary interpretation.

Brussels Airlines Hires Michelin Starred Chef

Geert-Van-Hecke-600x898

Passengers on the Belgian airline will be able to savor a meal created by one of the top names in contemporary Belgian gastronomy: triple Michelin-starred chef Geert Van Hecke. The chef, who has presided over his Bruges restaurant De Karmeliet for over 30 years, has prepared a starter with smoked Damme eel, tarragon yogurt sauce and mashed fennel. This first course will be followed by a dish of “Bruge-style shrimp,” curried sweet potatoes and steamed snow peas. Flemish beer and cheese will accompany the meal. This menu will be offered to business class passengers on long-haul flights leaving from Brussels for destinations in Africa or the US. The collaboration with Geert Van Hecke is the first in a series of tie-ups in Brussels Airlines’ “Belgian Star Chefs” initiative. Every four to five months, the company will invite a different celebrity chef to renew its business class menu with gourmet dishes based on seasonal, regional ingredients.

Ai Weiwei – Forever Bicycles in Toronto

aiweiwei_foreverbicycles_00

As part of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche in Toronto this weekend, renowned Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei has recreated his stunning Forever Bicycles installation in the center of Nathan Phillips Square. The gigantic piece dominates the majority of the outdoor space, featuring over 3,000 bicycles and measuring a colossal 100 ft long and 30 ft wide. By using the popular Yongjiu bikes (Yongjiu roughly translates as “forever bicycles” – hence the installation’s name) to create the labyrinth like structure, Weiwei comments on the ever changing and often confusing social environment not only in China, but around the world.

Florida-based architectural practice, Max Strang Architecture have designed the Lakehouse Residence project.  This eco-friendly contemporary home is located in Winter Haven, Florida, US. Registered with the USGBC, this modern property is anticipated to be Winter Haven’s first LEED-certified residence. The interior design has been conceived as wooden volumes nestled within an outer stucco “shell”. The shell provides generous eight-foot overhangs, which shelter the walls of glass from the Florida sun. A narrow courtyard amplifies the arrival experience and creates a privacy barrier for the private realm of the home.

The luxury property incorporates important passive environmental design concepts that result in abundant day-lighting and cross-ventilation potential. Glazing on the south elevation is extremely limited and a mature oak tree filters afternoon solar heat gain. Active environmental design features include a solar photovoltaic system, solar hot-water heaters, geothermal HVAC and LED lighting. The luxury Miami home, located on a central Florida lake, contains four bedrooms and a kitchen, dining room, living room and office. A pool and covered terrace are positioned along the lake-side of the home.
