Revolutionary Robotic Camera Drone Pilots Itself While Following You

If you live in San Francisco, chances are you have seen several drones flying around, especially in the Presidio. Even though they are still debatable, drones are being used more and more. So why not use one that pilots itself while following you around? For years, we’ve taken gorgeous photos using “point and shoot” style cameras, but the team at Lily is shaking things up. Their recent innovation of the same name takes this idea a step further with “throw and shoot” photography. Lily is an ultra-compact robotic camera drone, and it allows you to capture aerial photos and videos without having to pilot it.

To use the camera drone, you simply throw it in air and it begins shooting. Lily flies itself at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour, using a combination of GPS and computer vision to follow you around. The kit comes with a tracking device that has a wrist case.

Lily is built for photographing your outdoor adventures. It’s waterproof, floats, and can land on water. Size-wise, the drone fits easily into a backpack and weighs less than three pounds. The camera can shoot 12 megapixel still images, 1080p HD video, and 720p of slow-motion footage. Its flight time lasts 20 minutes with the built-in Lithium-Ion battery.

It will start shipping in February 2016 and is priced at $999. But, until June 15, the company is taking pre-orders through its website for $499.

The Next Step In Documenting Your Adventures… Soundsight Headphones.

SoundSightHeadphones

Every I have a gig, there is a minimum of one moment where I wish I could show my friends what I just saw.  Sometimes that could be someone jumping on stage and showing the world why not everyone should attempt twerking, or the immense reaction to bringing a special guest entertainer out to perform.  No matter how good a hired camera man may be, no one sees things from your perspective besides you.  The Soundsight headphones, and its app offer a way to get around that, presenting a new, unique angle to documentation.  I’m looking into picking some up for my next tour, especially after seeing the video below.

For any and all additional information about production, quality, components, (or a pretty dope promo video featuring UFC fighter Brandon Ruckus) you can click on any of the photos, or right here to check out their site.

#WCW – Photographer/Model Slawa.

selfie_by_slawa-d7mlv7o

In the modern age it’s hard to walk 5 feet on the internet (abstractly speaking) without finding someone showing a bit of skin and calling it art — which it -IS-, whether or not it is also other things as well, but not usually very inspired or well done. “Bad art” exists.  Photographer, and model Slawa has a gift. Her photographs are far more sensual (often while showing less), and better cropped and lit, with better poses, and excellent use of color/tone than the average every-girl taking a selfie. Every single shot in her collection is excellently done.  It’s definitely several tiers above anything else in the #Selfie genre that’s out right now. Impressively enough, Slawa is more than comfortable while posing for camera the way she does. Check the method below, and click here to see more of her.

The Future of Photography Is Here.

leica-T-600x389

The Leica-T is a premium mirrorless interchangeable lens camera milled from a single billet of aluminum. It is a minimalist design approach, developed in partnership with Audi, which requires maximum attention to detail.  Once cutting the unibody is complete, the camera has to be hand polished, something that takes at least 45 minutes. The end result is a camera that’s lightweight — just 95g — yet stronger and more rigid than devices built by gluing or fixing different layers and materials together.  As well as boasting a new precision manufacturing technique, the Leica T is also the first camera in the company’s 100-year history to come with a built-in wi-fi module to make image transfer simple and to boost the camera’s functionality via a dedicated smartphone and tablet app.  The app can turn a handset into remote view finder and shutter release system and will help to classify and examine captured images up close.

Apple iphone Air Concept

Designer Federico Ciccarese (of SET Solution) believes that this could definitely be the route Apple plans on taking, and decided to take some time to create his very own concept version of the Apple iPhone Air. Equipped with a 5 inch Retina display, this smartphone measures in at 1.5mm thick, and weighs just 70 grams (literally as light as a feather). Other details of the phone include fingerprint scanner, an entirely redesigned camera module, and the same lightning port connector. Of course the iPhone Air would be running on iOS7 complete with 64-bit architecture for maximum performance.

DigitalRev Reviews the Innovative Sony QX100 Lens Camera

The-New-Sony-DSC-QX100-Clip-On-Camera-Lens-for-Smartphones-1-610x250

Examining the ins and outs of Sony’s QX100, the camera experts at DigitalRev bring us their latest review. The hybrid camera-lens is intended for use with a mobile phone, and does represent a new niche in the market, however may not be specialized enough for photography purists. Connecting wirelessly via a Sony app seems to contribute inherent lag issues to the newfangled device, while the review also touches on shortcomings with the app interface. To it’s credit, the device does boast a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens, 3.6x optical zoom resulting in crisp photos and videos.

Skateboarder’s Self-Portraits Highlight São Paulo’s Architecture

fabianorodrigues3 fabianorodrigues2 fabianorodrigues4 fabianorodrigues5 fabianorodrigues6

Skateboarding expert and photographer Fabiano Rodrigues takes some really interesting self-portraits as he flips and grinds his way through São Paulo on his board. Unlike other action photography self-portraits, though, Rodrigues shares the spotlight with his surrounding setting. The landscape and architecture is as much the subject as he is, if not more so. His anonymous figure is an accessory to the towering structures that cut across the image and fill the frame. With his captivating artistic vision, it’s hard to believe that photography came to Rodrigues as a secondary passion. The Brazilian multi-talented artist first gained interest in photography while skateboarding professionally and posing for other photographers. Eventually his fascination with the medium grew, causing him to take a camera in his own hands and experiment with self-portraits using a Hasselblad camera and remote control. What he’s managed to accomplish since 2010 is a brilliant portfolio full of dramatically monochromatic shots of himself gliding in, around, and across the magnificent architecture of his city.

An Architect Gone Mad

tim-1 tim-2 tim-3

Without the use of a camera Portland-based artist Jim Kazanjian sifts through a library of some 25,000 images from which he carefully selects the perfect elements to digitally assemble mysterious buildings born from the mind of an architect gone mad. While the architectural and organic pieces seem wildly random and out of place, Kazanjian brings just enough cohesion to each structure to suggest a fictional purpose or story that begs to be told.

The Instagram Socialmatic Concept Camera

Since Facebook has bought Instagram for nearly a billion dollars in cash and stock, many users, bloggers, economy experts have thought Instagram could build its first real photo camera. Imagine to pick the Instagram App icon and now imagine it as real camera. This is the main idea of ADR Studio at the base of Instagram Socialmatic Concept. A social camera with 16 GB mass storage, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, optical zoom, webcam apps, QR Code capturing, LED flash, internal printer, 4:3 touchscreen and 2 main lenses with possibility to put on some 3D filters. With the integrated printer you could print out your photography directly on Instagram Paper Sheets. Every Instagram printed photo reports your Instagram nickname and a QR code on the frontside.

The Cannon Mirrorless Concept.

David Riesenberg scores a hot number with his Canon Mirrorless concept. Inspired by the classic AE and AE-P and working out his fantasy, David dished out this Canon AE-D. I love his detailed explanation and rationale behind each move, so hit the jump to read it in his voice….

Some of the main features and the reasoning behind them are:

Full Frame – Might as well be the pinnacle of 35mm. Especially if a new lens mount is required. Future proof.

18.1MP sensor from the 1DX – This camera will not rob sales from the 1DX on form factor alone so it makes sense to use an existing sensor instead of a new one. Plus, it will make an excellent pair to someone with an 1DX.

CM-D Lens mount – That was the source of most headaches for me. Naturally, I wanted to design it around the EF mount for reasons that I don’t need to state but it proved to be very problematic. Both the flange depth and actual mount diameter meant that the camera needed to be much thicker and possibly taller to accommodate EF lenses. So this “CM-D” lens mount is roughly FD sized which keeps the dimensions close to the original and enables lenses that are not too huge.

50mm f/1.0L “Kit Lens” – Fast primes. What can I say? I love them and they probably the best match to a system as I outlined above. So their existence is no less realistic that all the other items here. While I am far from being an optics expert, I designed this 50mm lens based on a combination of schematics of the Canon 50mm f/1L. FD f/1.2L and Leica f/0.95 so it should be a realistic representation of the dimensions of such a lens. It also features an aperture ring for direct control as well as an Auto mode for shutter priority or auto mode.

Viewfinder – Design wise, I knew from the start that I wanted to incorporate the prism hump of the AE cameras. It is a prominent feature that without it, the context of the design gets somewhat lost. At the same time, it is obviously not a technical requirement in mirrorless cameras so making it detachable while housing the EVF felt like the optimal combination of form and function. After all, if this is a camera for photographers, a viewfinder, even if electronic, is a must.

Flash + Flash + Flash – I regard flashes as an integral, must have feature of any system and I didn’t want to handicap its use in any form. Not when taking snapshots with the built-in one and not when the viewfinder is either attached or not.

Camera Lingo Necklaces.

The more and more time I spend around photographers, the more I get familiar with the lingo and terminology they use on a daily basis.  A JPEG, or a PSD file is nothing that I’m a stranger to, but some of the more advanced acronyms and symbols, I need some more getting used to.  This collection of jewelry from Photojojo might just help.  Photojojo’s Camera Lingo Necklaces feature laser-cut acrylic words and symbols on an 18″ silver chain. Designed by a graphic designer/photog, the lightweight plastic icons have the kind of sharp angles and crisp edges you only get from lasers. It comes in 4 designs: JPEG, CR2, NEF, and a no-flash symbol. Perfect gift for photo geeks.

Stupidity In Slow Motion.

Everything’s Better in Slow Motion, Especially Things Being Destroyed for No Reason.  Dumt og farligt (Stupid and Dangerous) is a Danish show featuring two dudes who have yet to read a warning label they didn’t want to violate.  Watch as they engage in the wanton destruction of many everyday objects — all in glorious super slow-motion.

Break Something.

People sometimes get into a certain mood where they enjoy breaking things.  Weather your angry, frustrated, or just feeling destructive, getting a chance to just destroy something is often a (not suggested) fast way to get your issues out.  I’m not sure how mad Philip Heron and James Adair must have been to create this video, but regardless of their motives, it’s pretty entertaining.  Check the method.

The Solar Camera Strap.

Most photographers use a sturdy camera strap while clicking pictures and here’s an idea that wants to capitalize on it. This is done by making the strap solar-savvy.  Meaning, adding thin solar films across the width of the strap, so as to harness solar energy when out on the field. Aptly christened the Solar Camera Strap, it’s a neat idea; when we can have solar panels on backpacks and what not, then why not on a camera strap?

Scientists Can Have Fun Too.

No matter what your profession, people always like to try and a little fun at the work place, and scientists are no different.  You’ll always have your pranksters, and the co-workers who like to have a laugh at someone else’s expense, but sometimes people can take things a bit too far… Enter the pneumatic cannon.

A pneumatic cannon is a pipe-based weapon which uses air pressure (pneumatic), propellant, or propane/gas, or combustion of a gaseous fuel, to launch projectiles at high speeds. First invented during the 1980s by Conor Conor Gaul the popularity of the pneumatic cannon is widespread. They are built to fire all sorts of projectiles, not always for practical use. The projectile can be dangerous and result in life-threatening injuries, including cranial fractures, if a person is hit.

Long story short, if you point a pneumatic cannon large enough at a person… you’re going to mess someone up.  The guy in this video is pure proof of that.
