PENIS… The P is for Penis. I’ve come across many, many a talented illustrator, but it’s the ones who’s styles transcend the norm that stick out to me.  Once I saw just two illustrations from good ol’ Penis (The illustrator’s name is Keith, but I just want to see how many times I can say penis in this post before we get flagged), but after seeing the juxtaposition between the intricacy and simplicity in Penis’s works of art, I’ve been clamoring for some of his work to call my own.  If you enjoy the illustrations in the post, make sure to Keith’s website right here, and grab some gear of your own.

Donald Glover Is The New Spiderman?

Community - Season 4

This is how the story started…

Back when Sony was planning on rebooting Spider-Man, actor and comedian Donald Glover started a grassroots campaign online to get cast in the role. Though the part eventually went to Andrew Garfield, many titans of comics and film put their support behind Glover and the movement eventually led to the creation of Miles Morales, the new Ultimate Spider-Man. Now, Glover finally gets his wish and will provide the voice of Morales in an upcoming episode of Disney XD’s “Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors.”

“That’s the great part about the Spider-Man costume: He can be anybody.  Spider-Man could be a girl. Spider-Man could be an old man. You don’t know. So I just tried to be as me as possible, because you’re always just going to bring it back to yourself when you watch the show…Spider-Man is the best because you just don’t know who he is, and he’s funny and he’s poor. I understand Spider-Man a lot on that level. He’s just trying to make it.”

The new season of “Ultimate Spider-Man” premieres this Sunday on Disney XD, but Glover’s stint as Morales won’t air until next year. Also, lest you think that Glover is content with settling his “campaign” by providing this voice, he still has hopes to put on the tights some day.

“I still have hopes to do something like that one day. I don’t look at this as second place. Spider-Man, he’s such an icon — you have to do something with him.”

This is a design exercise that pays homage to Mercedes-Benz’s racing history. The streamlined body is supposed to evoke airplanes, speed and movement. Designer Peter Vardai’s goal was to create a plan that reinforces the emotions toward Mercedes and refers the the brand’s tradition and future. His concept consisted of the feeling for speed and freedom. The Immersive Cocoon Display.

The world of interfaces continues to evolve and surprise us. We still think of it as something we can hold, fold and place in our bag to carry anywhere. What if you can be part of an intuitive and holistic experience where your interface is not reduced to a mouse-click or a two dimensional tablet screen. Welcome to the Immersive Cocoon, a surround display dome with sophisticated motion sensor technology that inspired  the technology depicted in ‘Minority Report’. Now your body becomes the interface, as you are enveloped and your body movement becomes part of this digital environment to make our everyday lives more enjoyable, at least that is what this conceptual project tries to explore.

The Immersive Cocoon opens its hatch silently and extends a small set of stairs that helps you move into this 360 degree display covering the entire interior walls. Inside you can sit, lean, and accommodate an adjustable work surface depending on how your imagination desires to utilize the Cocoon. You can connect into a virtual meeting across the globe, do yoga while at the airport or even visit a preserved temple in Tibet right from home, mall, or anywhere else this product will be located. I am not going to lie, I would like this in my job as I would not mind having lunch on the coast of a Greek island at least twice a week.

The Cocoon’s potential extends beyond leisure and into education, productivity, training and other uses that would benefit from this immersive technology. This spherical pod seems to show promise in many levels but the question always become its financial feasibility and social acceptance. Although innovative, something this ground breaking seems to have a hard time being implemented in public spaces. Seeing the roll out of this technology will be interesting and full of insight as more people interact with it. We can guarantee that it doesn’t lack thought and ingenuity as its 3D motion tracking system was developed by John Underkoffer, a former fellow of the MIT Media Lab. This conceptual prototype developed by NAU out of Zurich, Switzerland, shows immense opportunities into future daily and exclusive activities. What will be the price we pay financially, socially and psychologically? Maybe it will not be hard to adopt after all as we are really used to seeing this kind of innovation on the big screen.

A Silent World.

Some photographers are a jack of all trades when it comes to different types of photography, and others are just masters of one particular style.  Unfortunately I haven’t seen enough of Michael Kenna’s work to categorize him like that, but I will say that the one style/recurring theme of his collection “Silent World” shows a mastery of his craft.  All the photos individually tell an eerie story that depicts loneliness, alienation, and a vast distance from familiarity.  Take a look at this collection, and to see more from it, just click here.

A Few Incredibly Racist ”Hunger Games” Fans.

Over the March 23rd-March 25th weekend, “The Hunger Games” was a box-office juggernaut that broke all sorts of records.  But for some fans, the movie didn’t adhere closely enough to their imagined world of the book — specifically when it came to the skin color of some of the characters.  Now before we delve into this issue, let me say personally that I despise when producers changes characters….

When Katie Holmes was switched with Maggie Gyllenhaal in ‘The Dark Knight’, I was a bit disappointed, because I didn’t feel as much of a connection with character, all I could think about was the switch.  In the upcoming monster movie collaboration ‘The Avengers’, Edward Norton has been replaced by Mark Ruffalo, and I got drunk one night and expressed my discontent with this on twitter.  However, I understand why they changed the actors, and I just have to deal with it.  A while back, in the Bay Area, I noticed a bit of an uproar when the film ‘Green Lantern’ was approaching because the main character was white.  Given my skin color, I still was unapologetic when explaining to angry fans that the black Green Lantern (John Stewart), wasn’t having his race changed, they just chose to tell the story of Hal Jordan.  It’s not a racial issue, and there is NOTHING wrong with that.  But some ignorant fans of ‘The Hunger Games’ seem to have tripped themselves up on a few details in the new movie that just have me downright perplexed.

Three major characters in the film are black — Rue, Thresh, and Cinna. The books themselves, set in a post-apocalyptic future, don’t use specifically racial terms at all, providing only a description of characters from Katniss (the main character’s) point of view:

There you have it, descriptions IN THE BOOK of the physical look of the characters in question.

I hate to keep harping on this point, but…

The World’s Most Expensive T-Shirt.

A United Kingdom-based company called Superlative Luxury has created an eco-friendly t-shirt priced at $400,000.  The t-shirt is made of 100% organic cotton and the manufacturing process uses only renewable energy, such as wind and solar, reducing the carbon footprint by 90%.  The t-shirt features a spherical pattern created from 16 one-carat diamonds; half of which are white diamonds and the other half are enhanced rare black diamonds.  Due to the company’s preference for greener manufacturing, it takes them four weeks to make a shirt.  The t-shirts come with a one-year warranty.

Black Astrum today launch the Signature Card range of bespoke diamond encrusted business cards, targeting ultra high net worth individuals across the world.  A full set of cards can contain in excess of 30 carats. The average selling price per card is around the £1000 mark, sold in sets of 25, 50 and 100 cards.  “The Signature Card allows our members to express themselves in a truly unique way” said Sufian Khawaja, Black Astrum’s concept director.  Using precision cast Swiss made materials and diamonds of the highest quality, the Signature Card is designed to make an immediate statement.  Originally produced as a one-off commission for a wealthy Middle Eastern family, the card elegantly encapsulates the pre-eminence of the individual.

The Shape Of Things To Come.

Curves are the new black when it comes to industrial design. From the elongated drop silhouette of Apple’s Macbook AIR laptop computer, to the very sexy swooping lines of the Fisker “Karma” Hybrid Sports Car.  From time to time, my staff will sometimes run across objects of desire that are truly intriguing by design but confusing when it comes to function. This collection of leather home accessories by Jerome Olivet for French home furnisher Roche Bobois, is a perfect example of this. From what we could gather we have a photo-frame, a basket, a magazine rack, a laptop surface?, a charger plate?, a vase? and a flux capacitor? Whatever they are intended to function as, they are certainly beautifully designed with luscious gradient curves begging to be touched. I suppose that when objects look this good, they don’t really need an obvious function.

New School/Old School Arcade Games.

So, who’s got game? We found these old-school tables in Australia at Arcade Tables. The company has been making the coffee-table size arcade tables, which were popular about 30 years ago, since 2001.  While the newly designed tables are more stylish, they’re still filled with the classic video-arcade games of the 1980s including Space Invaders, PacMan, Donkey Kong, Scramble, Galaga and more.

The tables come with 60 pre-loaded classic games that include all the original soundtracks and graphics. The company reports that its arcade tables are being played on in Australia, New Zealand, the UAE and the UK. The tables are being delivered to private households, as well as to commercial clients, such as bars, lounges, cafes and even workplaces. The units weigh about 165 pounds and can be stationary or made mobile with attachable castors.

These tables are home décor friendly with sleek designs and come in various colors.  The Stealth, the newest product, is offered in both black and white glossy variants, which are listed as “Deep Space Obsidian” and “Supernova White.”  The glass-top surface of the tables is one-half-inch thick tempered, tinted glass with beveled edges and a rubber seal to ensure durability. Along with the arcade tables, the company also sells complementing stools and accessory pieces. The various stools are uniquely decorative.

Hannibal Barca Bey (Hannibal of Carthage)

Last week, Duckworth of Tokyo 24, his photographer, and myself sat down in my living room, and had a very intellectual conversation about the merrits of Black History Month, and its relation to African Americans, and Africans.  Long story short, the conversation boiled down to us discovering one of the most bad-ass dark-skinned warriors of all time.  Hannibal of Carthage would legit make Leonidas piss in his red banana-hammock.   Check the video series below about this epic warrior who was credited as the father of advanced military strategy.  And if your a youth who’s still in school, when Black History Month rolls around, tell your teachers you want to learn about Hannibal Barca Bey.

Ninja Say What!?

So this weekend I got the chance to chill with a homeboy of mine from Miami, and he introduced me to one of the funniest video’s I’ve seen in quite some time.  The film is a spoof of the dreaded stigma of what races are “allowed” to say certain words and still have them be socially acceptable.  The way the video is shot and the last half make it totally hilarious, we were laughing all the way from the living room to the club quoting lines.  Check the method my Ninja.
