Who’s Got The Best Liquor In Cannes?

Remy-Martin-Excellence-Cannes-2014-600x427

An official supplier of the Cannes Film Festival, Rémy Martin is pulling out all the stops for the event this year. For the first time, Rémy Martin is launching a special edition of its XO Excellence cognac honoring the cinematic arts.  One of Remy Martin‘s most prestigious cognacs, XO Excellence is an aromatic combination of floral, fruit and spice notes.  Just as sumptuous as the cognac itself, the decanter for this special edition has a gold coating from its base to its stopper. And, in homage to the Cannes Film Festival, the cognac maker has decorated the neck and label with a subtle black and gold motif echoing a strip of film.  The special edition comes in a gold and black gift box in which the decanter sits atop a red carpet pedestal.  Rémy Martin, one of the world’s most respected cognac brands, transforms grapes from the Grande and Fine Champagne zones into delicate spirits that are prized by aficionados around the world, and particularly in China.

Le Sphinx Tattoos 25 Limited Edition J&B Whiskey Bottles

sphinx-JB-whiskey-bottles-designboom01

Sébastien Mathieu, owner of Le Sphinx a private tattoo room in paris has literally tattooed onto 25 bottles for whiskey brand, J&B. Presented in rough black wooden box, the individually designed bottles each took around 20 hours to be completed. The containers were fully covered with a latex material, just like the one used when tattooing – slim enough to respect the outline’s shape and strong enough to be hit multiple times by the sharp needles. A human skin color was also applied to help strengthen the overall perception of the design.

Surprising Facts About Booze

enhanced-buzz-29921-1370262903-6

Diet mixers get you more drunk.

According to study conducted in early 2013, spirits mixed with diet pop get you 18% drunker than spirits mixed with the ‘full fat’ varieties. The theory is that your body recognises full-sugar drinks as food, which slows down alcohol absorption, where as diet drinks don’t.

bonobos26n-2-web

Wanting to get drunk is natural. Possibly.

The ‘drunken monkey hypothesis’ put forward by Dr. Robert Dudley of the University of California suggests that human attraction to ethanol (pure alcohol) may have a genetic basis. He argued that the primate ancestor of homo sapiens had a high dependence on fruit as a food source, and consequently developed a genetic attraction to ripe and overripe fruit, which contains ethanol.

Big lads aren’t necessarily the biggest drinkers.

A beer belly might mean you’ve consumed a lot in the past, but it doesn’t mean you can automatically handle more alcohol in one go than someone slimmer. In fact, a lean person will be less affected by booze because water-rich muscle tissues absorb alcohol effectively, preventing it from reaching the brain.

Tequila has a lot in common with champagne.

Both drinks have ‘Denomination of Origin’, meaning they can only be produced in one place (a certain region of Mexico and France, respectively). Also, like champagne, tequila is one of the most closely regulated drinks in the world, watched by the Mexican government, the Tequila Regulatory Council, and the National Chamber of Tequila Producers.

Is not Ireland, Russia, or any other country typically associated with a love for the sauce. Instead, that dubious honor goes to South Korea, who, according to a World Health Organization study, drinks more hard spirits than anywhere else — and is where Jinro soju comes from, the best-selling spirit on the planet.

Champagne is dangerous.

And not just because it makes you attempt the worm at wedding discos, either. Thanks to the approximately 49 million bubbles in each one, the pressure in a bottle of champagne is 90 pounds per square inch — three times the pressure in car tires — meaning a popped cork really could take your eye out.

L’Or de Jean Martell “Dome” by Eric Gizard

M

The house of Martell has collaborated with French interior architect and designer Eric Gizard to create the “Dôme” gift box for L’Or de Jean Martell.  I worked by drawing inspiration from cabinets of curiosities where collectors would store precious, almost magical objects in Renaissance Europe,” Eric Gizard said. “I was also inspired by silver cloches from great restaurants that excite curiosity and showcase the revelation of an exceptional dish.” The Dome’s base contains a hidden book that emerges with a single push. A mirror placed behind the bottle reflects and enhances the colour of this intense cognac. L’Or de Jean Martell is a blend of very old Grande Champagne and Borderies eaux-de-vie, creating a unique blend of elegance, power and roundness. This blend consists over 400 rare eaux-de-vie, some more than a century old, and they come in a precious crystal decanter. The cognac is a testimony to Jean Martell, whose founding principles are based on the pursuit of perfection. It has notes of fruited candy, sweet spices and gingerbread.

Zarb Bizarre Champagne Packaging

Zarb-Bizarre-Champagne-Packaging-6

Zarb Champagne shouldn’t have a tough time catching your attention at your local wine boutique.  These wild and wondrous champagne bottles are styled in a truly bizarre manner, reflecting the identity of the Zarb brand itself.  In French, the word Zarb is slang for “bizarre”, a moniker well suited to this new line of champagne.  The bubbly within this bottle isn’t your run-of-the-mill sparkling white either.  It hails from the Champagne region of France, so it bears the title of Champagne with true authenticity.  This line of packaging might just be the most exotic that a Champagne producer would ever dare to market.

ABSOLUT Launches 4 Million Unique Bottles

In the coming weeks, Absolut Vodka will begin distributing nearly 4 million bottles across the globe. And every one of them will be different. Using a mix of 38 different colors and 51 pattern types, applied through splash guns and color-generating machines, all bottles come out different from each other. The project, called “Absolut Unique,” required a complete re-engineering of the company’s production plant in Sweden, executives said. All the bottles in the Absolut Unique series will be individually numbered.

The Miller Boom Box.

Take a look at the creative packaging of Miller beer. To attract attention to and to make Miller the preferred brand among other six packs in the summer when beer consumption spikes. Miller is closely linked with music in Turkey. It has been organizing Miller Music Factory, a contest to discover fresh talents at the Miller Freshtival, a music festival. This is why we have chosen music as a theme for our six pack. We have designed two sided boxes, one side looks like a speaker and the other is the cassette player. This way when three boxes are brought together side by side, they form a boom box. Design was created by advertising agency Manajans/JWT, Istanbul, Turkey.

Smirnoff Caipiroska Bottle.

To launch the new formula of the flavors of Smirnoff Caipiroska, the Brazilian drink that is popular worldwide, design agency JWT created bottles with the texture of the fruit for the flavors lemon, passion fruit and berries and a diagonal perforation, so that consumers could feel the unique experience of peeling a drink made of fruit. And they even sent the bottles in wooden crates to a select mailing list, just like the fruits are transported in large produce markets in Brazil.

10 Myths About The Human Body.

“Old wives’ tale”: The phrase conjures up notions of well-meaning old grandmothers boiling up plants and roots and rubbing lucky rabbits’ feet. But many of the things we believe — and tell each other — about the human body are passed on by intelligent friends, educated teachers and sometimes even doctors themselves. So arm yourself with these 10 facts, and whip them out next time your mother tries to force you into a warmer sweater.

S

10. Going out in winter with wet hair means you’re more likely to catch a cold

This old wives’ tale seem to make perfect sense, but there is actually no correlation between feeling cold and catching one. More likely, people get sick more often in cold weather because we tend to congregate indoors, passing viruses more readily. Many experiments have investigated the temperature-illness relation over the years, but it’s been found time and time again that chilled and non-chilled participants all caught the rhinovirus at the same rate. Today, some research even suggests that cold temperatures actually stimulate our immune systems, helping protect against sniffles in the future.

S

9. Reading in the dark will ruin your eyesight

While it’s true that reading in dim light makes your eyes work a little harder, there is no evidence to suggest that the practice is detrimental in the long run. Like any muscle, eyes may get tired from having to let in as much light as possible while focusing on small text, and they may dry up a little. But this eye fatigue is far from irreversible, unless you read only in the dark, all the time. But then you have other problems to worry about.

S

8. You should drink eight glasses of water a day

This myth is based on a game of telephone. Back in 1945, a government agency recommended that we need around eight glasses of fluid per day for optimal health. The eight glasses fact stuck, but what people didn’t notice was that the experts said “fluid” — which includes coffee, juice, pop etc. — and not necessarily that we need to drink it (most of our food today contains water). Also, the advice is over 65 years old. This notion has been thoroughly debunked today. So, if you feel thirsty, drink something. If you don’t, don’t.

S

7. You should never wake a sleepwalker

About 20% of the population is prone to sleepwalking, which tends to run in the family. Chances are, a lot of these people are going to hurt themselves if left to wander around dark houses in the middle of the night (not to mention those who attempt to cook, eat and drive). It’s commonly believed that waking sleepwalkers will lead to them becoming angry and disoriented, but at the more ridiculous end of the scale, some believe it increases risk of a heart attack. If you’re worried, just guide the person gently back to bed. That should do the trick.

S

6. You lose most of your body heat through your head

Time for a little logic here: If your head is uncovered but the rest of your body is, you will clearly lose more heat from up top. However, if your head is covered but an arm or leg is exposed, then that’s where heat will escape. This myth seems to have arisen from an old military study that left soldiers outside (with bodies completely covered) without hats and found significant heat loss through the head. Since then, it has been shown that we actually lose about 10% from our heads and the rest from other parts of the body. So you’ll feel a breeze whether you leave the house without pants or without a beanie.

S

5. Skipping meals helps you lose weight

Here’s the reality: No matter how good you think your self-control is, if you skip one meal, you will overeat at the next. It’s been proven. Many times. Eating regularly means your metabolism is working hard and burning calories while turning the food you’ve eaten to energy. When you’re not eating, it switches to standby mode, and fewer calories are being burned. The longer you starve yourself, the slower your metabolism will get, eventually resulting in a less efficient calorie-burning system. So skipping meals in the long run can actually make you gain weight. Also, if you’re combining meal-skipping with exercise, you will have less energy for exercise, and workouts will be less productive.

S

4. We only use 10% of our brain

Here’s the thing: We do use all of our brain, just not all at once. Brain damage studies are one of the ways the 10% myth has been disproven. No matter which part of the brain is injured, it affects performance in some way. Brain-imaging technologies show the same thing. So those who have been hoping to tap into the other 90% for telekinesis need to get off their asses and get the remote control themselves.

S

3. Cracking your knuckles will cause arthritis

If every crack of a knuckle took us one step closer to arthritis, there would be a lot more aching hands in the population. That pop you hear has nothing to do with the bones; it’s the sound of a small bubble of gas bursting, and there is no evidence to show that it will lead to arthritis, which is most often a symptom of plain old age, weight pressure or previous injury. But if you are a regular cracker, you might want to ease off. It has been shown that it does slightly weaken finger joints, leading to a less impressive grip later in life.

S

2. Alcohol kills brain cells

Your slurred speech Saturday night and the Sunday morning hangover may make you feel like you’ve dropped a hundred IQ points, but the actual fact is that drinking (unless you’re drinking pure alcohol, the disinfectant) won’t kill your brain cells. If you’re a raging alcoholic, you might be looking at some damage to how your neurons communicate, but this impairment is largely reversible. The liver problems, not so much.

S

1. Eating at night makes you fat

Let’s get this straight: A calorie is a calorie, and calories don’t watch the clock and turn into villains of the night after 6 p.m. You get fat by taking in more calories than you burn, so Krispy Kremes at night are no worse than Krispy Kremes in the morning. What does tend to happen is that people who wait to eat until late evening when they’re super hungry, or are mindlessly snacking on the sofa, consume more. If you eat a huge meal and then lie down to sleep, you may find it hard to drift off, but that’s about it.

The BEST Drinking Game Ever In Life.

So, while in L.A., I was chillin with my good friend and business partner, and we decided that the clubs were a bit boring.  We’ve both clubbed a bit too much for the weekend, and we were over the scene for the night, so we decided to go back to my hotel and kick it with some folks.  In the process, I’m pretty sure I created one of the most ridiculous drinking games I’ve come up with in the last few years.  The HBO hit series Entourage has been one of my favorite shows for quite some time, so we started watching and put some rules into effect.  With the help of a set of drinking dice that were labeled with phrases like “Sip”, “Drink 2 Cups”, “Bottoms Up”, “Drink Half Cup”, “No Drinks”, “Drink 2 Cups”, and “Drink At Will”, I devised one simple rule.  Every time Ari Gold says the word “F*ck” or any derivative of said obscenity, we roll the dice, and drink as instructed.  We started with season 5, and by the second episode, all parties involved were plastered, and by episode 4 we ran out of liquor.  All in all it was a fun night, and I’m fairly certain that the next time I’m taking a break from work on the weekends, I’m sure to play the game again.  And if your feeling a bit frisky, but you don’t have the dice we used, just take a simple shot of whatever you have whenever Mr. Gold utters the F word.  Here’s a sample, enjoy the results.

Three Sheets To The Wind.

Comedian Zane Lamprey hosts a humorous trip around the world, sampling the local well-known (and little-known) food and drink, while also engaging in local alcohol-related customs in a show titled ‘Three Sheets’.  (After the saying “Three sheets to the wind”.)  I’m not sure who he had to sleep with to get this gig, but being an alcohol connoisseur myself, I’d love to be able to go around the world and taste liquors in much the same fashion that fat people would love to be food critics.  In each episode, Lamprey samples various drinks and food in addition to learning about the customs and libations of that area, and then experiences the local hangover cure. The series is produced by Screaming Flea Productions, and will air on Spike TV starting Feb 28th.
