Willie Mays grew up in Alabama with athletic parents who instilled a love for sports in him from a young age. His father, a former baseball player in segregated leagues, taught him to catch before he could walk, and by 14, Willie was playing alongside his father on a mill-sponsored team. Despite his high school lacking a baseball team, Willie excelled in basketball and football before focusing on baseball as his career path. Known as “The Say Hey Kid,” Willie Mays went on to become a legendary center fielder, playing professionally from the late 1940s in the Negro Leagues to 1972 with the New York Mets, after spending 21 years with the New York Giants, later the San Francisco Giants. He passed away at the age of 93.
Despite Willie Mays’ impressive career, he only won one World Series during his 24 years in baseball, with the 1954 New York Giants. This victory included one of the most iconic moments in MLB history: Mays’ legendary over-the-shoulder catch known simply as “The Catch.” It occurred in Game 1 at the Polo Grounds, where Mays, running at full speed, made a spectacular no-look catch in deep center field with the bases loaded. His quick throw to second base prevented any runs from scoring, solidifying the moment as one of baseball’s greatest plays.
