Good news for James Spader – the quirky character actor is coming back in a big way as one of Marvel’s ultimate villains. Spader has just landed the title role in “The Avengers 2: The Age of Ultron,” the upcoming sequel to 2012’s record-setting superhero jamboree. Ultron is an evil robot that can travel through time and uses his talents to change the present so he can have the upper hand in the future. But, departing from the comic, writer-director Joss Whedon plans to strip some of Ultron’s powers for the upcoming film. “I knew right away what I wanted to do with him,” Whedon recently told Entertainment Weekly. “He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, godd— it, he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic.” Spader’s Ultron will be making trouble for Marvel’s costumed heroes in the movie, including Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, and Thor. However, since Ultron is entirely mechanical, it remains to be seen if Spader will be on set in a suit, interacting with his fellow cast members, or if he’ll be providing the voice for a CGI creation. So far, Marvel and Disney haven’t weighed in on the matter. Whedon first revealed that Ultron would be the main villain in the “Avengers” sequel during his appearance at San Diego Comic-Con in July. And that Spader will be playing a less powerful Ultron, this should give fans plenty of room to speculate on how the writer-director will approach the character, given Spader’s ability to play bad guys who are at once charming and a little creepy.

Chinese artist Kebel Li exposes the magnificence of earth’s insect species in his sculptural work with beetles. The already deceased bugs are reproduced to appear as if in their habitat, closely mimicking their instinctual gestures. Li collects extremely rare and visually fascinating beetles from around the world, which exhibit incredible physical characteristics like gleaming metallic exoskeletons and razor sharp horns. In order to properly and optimally conserve the specimens, they undergo a lengthy preservation process: the dried insects are put into a relax chamber filled with wet paper and anti-molding chemicals, which makes their joints movable again. They are then carefully pinned and posed onto an organic branch base and left to dry there for 4-5 days. The insects are chemically stable and, without physical damage, will stay preserved in this state for hundreds of years.

World’s First 3D Printed Twin Tip Skateboard

Dutch artist Sam Abbott is the designer of the first fully-functioning skateboard that has been built and modeled using a 3D printer. After winning a competition by 3DprintUK, co-hosted by CGtrader, abbott was chosen to have his concept for a twin tip skateboard printed by the company on a 3D printer. Because the design of the object is slightly longer than the available build tray, the deck is adapted and assembled in pieces — cut into 3 separate sections and joined together with connector pins to ensure optimal accuracy and strength. The surface of the printed board is patterned, and traditional grip tape and trucks are added design features, augmenting the characteristics of a traditional skateboard with a technological twist.

The Stash Stainless – Stainless Steel Bass Guitar

general

The Stash Stainless is the only bass guitar that is made from stainless steel with unified frets and a tubular neck design. Each piece of the guitar has been custom crafted and hand assembled by the designer, Stan Potyrala. The design is not only distinct, sleek and modern, but the unique tubular neck presents the fingers of the musician to a parallel array of strings around a circular radius. This allows access of the fingers to each string in a more natural and comfortable way. This design can ease the muscle stress that a flat surface can cause to the fingers, hands and wrist. The composition of the entire instrument (body, neck, bridge and strings) are of the same metal – having one coefficient of thermal expansion. This eliminates relative dimension changes as a result of extreme temperature shifts. This means your bass will stay in tune much longer than conventional basses. The design improves stiffness, mechanical and environmental stability, sound quality, tuning and mechanical accuracy.
