10 of 2016’s Top Freestyles.

c46812a97227a0e996285ca375ca74d4-1000x675x1

Freestyling is an art form that is one of the most beautiful things to witness in hip-hop. The act of spitting off the top is a skill rappers need to showcase when they’re on a radio show, for their fans at a concert or just kicking it with friends. There’s just something about watching your favorite rapper spit witty wordplay, analogies, double entendres and slip in a diss or two. When a rapper is in the zone, crushing one of the game’s most popular beats, it should get any hip-hop fan excited.

Who can forget The Diplomats or Eminem ripping the mic during BET’s iconic video mixshow, Rap City: Tha Basement? Or Royce Da 5’9, Mr Porter and Slim Shady on Tim Westwood? How about Jay Z freestyling over Kanye West’s “Grammy Family” on Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex show? There was the iconic The Notorious B.I.G. and Nas freestyle where Method Man introduced both of them to the masses as well. The list can go on and on.  In 2016, there’s been a bunch of freestyles that prove rappers young and old still got it. From rising Brooklyn star Young M.A to West Coast veteran The Game and more, hope you enjoyed some of the best freestyles displays of yesteryear.

WOLF by Tyler, The Creator

130214-tyler-creator-wolf

Rapper and frontman of Odd Future – Tyler, the Creator – has presented the trailer for his upcoming film WOLF, directed by his alter-ego Wolf Haley. The one-minute trailer begins with a close up of Tyler lighting a cigarette, before issuing the command for his gang members to beat up a nerdy version of himself. The track that plays in the background throughout the whole clip is “Rusty” featuring Domo Genesis and Earl Sweatshirt.

Tyler, The Creater & Domo Genesis – Sam Is Dead.

Odd Future rapper Tyler the Creator may have been born long after the Vietnam War was over, but that doesn’t mean he can’t use it to set the scene for his band’s new viral music video for the song “Sam is Dead.”  Evoking everything from Wes Anderson’s Rushmore to a title screen that looks straight out of a Robert Rodriguez movie, the song features mellow production set against scenes of death and a mass grave that isn’t exactly explained. From a guy who is known for disjointed but compelling songwriting and wild live shows, it seems appropriate. It also makes sense that Tyler directed the video—he recently tweeted he wants to move out of rapping and into film scoring and production.  Tyler the Creator creating movies? We can’t wait for the feature-length—weird, spooky storyline and all.

Loiter Squad – Episode 1/Odd Future Afterparty In San Francisco.

Just like many other 18-15 year old males in the U.S., I’ve become a fan of most of the programming on Adult Swim (the off the wall late night programming that comes on Cartoon Network).  As the line up has changed over the years, I’ve had many different programs to look forward to, but a few months ago I got a bombshell dropped on me that Odd Future would be getting their own Adult Swim programming slot.  The people reading this not totally familiarized with O.F. might not understand just how ridiculous that concept seems, but you will soon.  I’ve managed to get my hands on the first episode of the show ‘Loiter Squad’, and not only is it pure unadulterated hilarity, it’s also exact what Adult Swim needed to keep their line-up fresh.  Check the method below.

For those of you who are unaware of the O.F. movement, let me just open up your mind to the situation.  The group is led by rapper/producer Tyler, The Creator, and includes rappers Hodgy Beats, Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis and Mike G, singer Frank Ocean, producers Left Brain, Syd the Kyd and Matt Martians, and other non-musical members, notably Jasper Dolphin, Taco and L-Boy (that appeared in the ‘Loiter Squad’ episode above.)  Their music is a crowd hyping force to be reckoned with, and anyone who wants proof of this needs to go no further than San Francisco.  O.F. is gathering at 330 Ritch on April 9th for a night of intoxicated skullduggery courtesy of Above Ground.  Click the pic below for tickets.

Wiz Khalifa – Day Today -While You Were Sleeping.

Wiz Khalifa’s video blog series “DayToday” follows the young rapper through his entertianment  exploits.  With dozens of episodes already out, the first one that caught my eye was “While You Were Sleeping”.  This video follows Wiz in the studio with Pharrell Williams and a few others (including Tyler The Creator).  Check out a little of what it’s like to be Wiz.

The Game ft. Tyler The Creator & Lil Wayne – Martian vs. Goblins (Official Video).

The song “Martians vs. Goblins” has been on constant spin for months in my car.  The deep bass and over the top lyrics seem to be a hit with whoever rides shotgun, but the video that dropped yesterday is an entirely different animal.  Check the method below, and be impressed.

Tyler The Creator x Waka Flocka.

At the Odd Future concert in Atlanta, GA recently, Tyler the Creator brought out Waka Flocka to perform ‘Karma’.  Just the sight of these two, young, unconventional artists on stage was enough to bring the house down.  Check out the footage below.

Pusha T ft. Tyler The Creator – Touble On My Mind (Live Footage & Official Video).

Considering Eminem & Nicki Minaj or Michael Jackson & Kanye West, hip hop has seen its share of random, yet extraordinary collaborations.  Pusha T and Tyler the Creator is no different.  The track “Trouble On My Mind” is a doozie that’s been taking the web by storm since its release.  However, without the rapper’s knowing, Pusha T’s track, “Trouble On My Mind,” featuring Tyler, the Creator, hit the ‘net. Red Bull exclusively premiered the track on July 8th, but it seems as if Pusha T wasn’t made aware it was to debut.  Pusha tweeted…

Oh really??? People dropping music without letting me know??? U think that right?? U think I’m happy bat that??… U thirst buckets just couldn’t wait till Monday huh???????? U could run a wet dream. [sic]

Never the less, check the video above for the first live performance, and the video below for the official video.

Odd Future: Hometown Documentary.

Tyler the Creator has been an ever rising name in the hip hop community.  After kudos from Jay-Z, being nominated for MTV’s coveted Video of the Year award, and winning the VMA award for best new artist, many more head have turned Tylers way.  The Odd Future crew released a hometown documentary recently that should give new fans and interested listeners a little background and this new force in hip hop.

Chris Brown’s Cousins Chase Down Frank Ocean.

I do my best not to help stimulate hip hop beef, or draw too much attention to it on the blog… BUT this one was a little too much for me to ignore.  Odd Future’s own Frank Ocean went off on Chris brown for seemingly no reason recently on twitter after Chris Brown complimented him.  What ensued was a back and forth between Brown, Tyler The Creator, and Frank Ocean that was eventually broken up by none other than The Game (random.)  But although the argument may have ended there, I’m getting the feeling things are just heating up.  More below.

Now, I have to admit, that Chris Brown doesn’t exactly strike me as the most gangsta of the child star R&B singers on the planet, however, this doesn’t mean that his family won’t go hard.  From the description of a video that surfaced recently, Frank Ocean allegedly ran after being confronted by Chris Brown.  But weather that’s true or not remains to be seen.  What the video actually shows however is Frank Ocean driving away from who are reported to be Chris Browns cousin.  TO ME, by the looks of things in the video combined with  knowing a bit of background on the Odd Future crew, I don’t think this is the end of it at all.  And who knows, if this is the next hip hop beef to spill over from word to action, Chris Brown may have the upper hand… he messed Robyn pretty bad.

Tyler The Creator – ”Tron Cat”

Click the pic to listen.

Tyler, the Creator‘s much-anticipated sophomore LP “Goblin” drops May 10th, and below you can stream another track off the effort in the form of “Tron Cat”. The four-minute number is your standard Tyler affair: a simple beat supports a stream of twisted thoughts.

B.O.B. vs. Tyler The Creator?

Although I don’t have a personal opinion on the matter, I know that not everyone is amused by the antics of Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator.  B.o.B took aim at the upstart on Friday (March 25) with a fiery dis track titled “No Future,” a response to a line the California rapper issued on his breakout “Yonkers.”

“What you think of Hayley Williams?/ F— her, Wolf Haley robbing ’em,” “I’ll crash that f—ing airplane that that f—-t n—a B.o.B is in/ And stab Bruno Mars in his goddamn esophagus.”

The line is characteristic of Tyler and his crew’s shocking rhymes; the collective are, in part, inspired by Eminem and works like his Relapse album with its slew of serial-killer references.  The “Airplanes” star, however, isn’t a fan.

“If I was you I would be a little more cautious,” Bobby Ray raps on “No Future.” “I’m way too high for you to look at/ The future ain’t looking promising for these rookies/ This is target practice but I don’t even pull the f—ing trigger anymore, ’cause it’s just a waste of bullets/ Come and get this pu—, wipe them off the floor/ I’m guessing they was hoping for some different results/ I’m guessing they was guessing ’cause they wasn’t really sure/ But f— it, I guess I’mma have to let these n—-s know.  Keep f—ing with me, you ain’t gon have no future,”

Tyler responded via Twitter. Perhaps taking the high road after driving too close to the edge, the 20-year-old wrote that he didn’t think “No Future” was a dis track. He even gave B.o.B props on the rhyme.  “Whoa,” he wrote in his first message. “I don’t think the ‘No Future’ song is even a diss. But I’ve never heard him spit like that. Took me by surprise, cus it’s tight.”  A second message took a swipe at producer Alex Da Kid over “Airplanes” and “Love the Way You Lie” sounding too similar.
