All The Beautiful Drones.

Beautiful, and spellbinding time lapse photos have been used to display many different mediums in the past. The above example is from DJ Storm’s: “Untitled” beat tape. But where do these images come from, and furthermore, how are they created? Photographer Reuben Wu creates images that reveal an alien splendor in natural and manmade landscapes across the globe. Previously he has explored the brilliant blue rivers of molten sulfur in Indonesian volcanoes, and photographed the thousands of glistening mirrors that compose Nevada’s SolarReserve. For his ongoing series Lux Noctis, the Chicago-based photographer utilizes modified drones as aerial light sources, illuminating obscure landscapes in a way that makes each appear new and unexplored. Recently Wu has evolved his process of working with the drones to form light paths above topographical peaks in the mountainous terrain.

“I see it as a kind of ‘zero trace’ version of land art where the environment remains untouched by the artist, and at the same time is presented in a sublime way which speaks to 19th century Romantic painting and science and fictional imagery,” said Wu to Colossal.  The light from his GPS-enabled drones create a halo effect around some of the presented cliffs and crests when photographed using a long exposure. An elegant circle of light traces the flight of the drone, leaving a mark only perceptible in the resulting photograph. You can see more of Wu’s landscape photography on his Instagram.

Time-lapsed nude dancer

NY-based photographer Shinichi Maruyama created these lovely photographs using nearly 10,000 individual photographs of a nude dancer in motion. The abstract images remind me of Japanese ink wash painting, as if the figures were created by the stroke of a thick brush, which is not unsurprising considering Maruyama’s previous work with water sculptures. Of the photos Shin says:

I tried to capture the beauty of both the human body’s figure and its motion. The figure in the image, which is formed into something similar to a sculpture, is created by combining 10,000 individual photographs of a dancer. By putting together uninterrupted individual moments, the resulting image as a whole will appear to be something different from what actually exists. With regard to these two viewpoints, a connection can be made to a human being’s perception of presence in life.

Movie Marathoning (Batman vs. The Avengers).

With The Dark Knight Rises one of the most anticipated films of the summer, CraveOnline decided to make Batman the focus of their latest Movie Marathoners, tackling eight different Bat-films back to back.  Beginning with 1966’s Batman: The Movie, an audience of over 30 made their way through Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman, Batman Returns, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Batman Begins and, finally, The Dark Knight.  Take a look at the rating at the end of the video and see if you agree.

Different video styles have a unique way of reflecting different concepts both visually and mentally.  One of the most beautiful ways to demonstrate the passing of time, is with a tool called a time lapse.  I came across a clip by Dominic Boudreault, who used the time lapse to demonstrate a duality between the city and nature.  Regardless of the original intent, the video is downright beautiful, and capture city sights beautifully.

Locations include :

– Montreal, Quebec, Canada
– Quebec city, Quebec, Canada
– Toronto, Ontario, Canada
– Manhattan, New York, USA
– Chicago, Illinois, USA

The World’s Major Cities… Then And Now.

Everyone knows that as time goes on, people grow, places change, and entire civilizations evolve, but seeing these types of changes in photographs really make the point hit home.  This collection of large cities from all over the world proves that better than just the thought.  From the city I reside in (San Francisco) to the Upsala Glacier in Argentina, you can see right before your eyes how much change has hit certain places.
