The Queensland Theatre 2018.

Queensland Theatre’s 2018 Season looks to showcase a range of new, bold and exciting plays that pushed the boundaries of contemporary theatre in Australia. After working with the team on both their new brand and 2017 season, we had the chance to at how the identity might evolve and be refined for a new year.  The season leverages one of Queensland Theatre’s unique traits – the set builders and workshop housed within their building. Working alongside their team, we created eight different sets that told a key aspect of each play. We also introduced physical play titles into the sets, pushing the use of their bespoke custom typeface.
Each set was photographed in its completeness, with panels, props and actors all working in harmony to create images that were a true reflection of the effort that goes into each performance.  With Tim Jones and his team expertly lighting and shooting each of the sets, the results were a series of images that explore the subtleties of each of the plays themes, while retaining a vibrancy that spoke to Queensland Theatre’s unique identity and character.

The New Standard In Movie Theaters.

It seems that Poland is the midst of an economic up-swing, and what better time to launch a brand new entertainment multi-plex space than now. “Multikino” theaters in Warsaw, Poland is being billed as the “most spectacular and stylish CINEMA IN EUROPE” I’m not sure if I know anyone who’s been to every single theater in Europe so we’ll just have to take their word for it. Brimming with lush velvet, shiny chrome, rich colors and just screaming bling, this cinematic show stopper was designed by Robert Majkut’s Design Studio.

The Premiere Hall has an air of splendid theater and opera auditoria. It features numerous decorative elements, ornaments, and wall lighting details. For convenience, special comfortable seats have been placed in the hall, upholstered with cozy fabrics, and in the VIP-zone they are covered with genuine purple leather. The entire hall, although very modern, alludes by its color scheme to the tradition of grand theater and opera auditoria, which is exemplified by an impressive 9 foot chandelier made using a state-of-the-art LED technology.

Both in the upper part of the Premiere Hall and in the first story connected to the Premiere Hall, there is a VIP-zone called the ‘Velvet Bar’. It includes a distinctive long bar and a separate stage – to be used both for music performances and as a separate bay with mobile seats. For a total convenience, the VIP zone has its own cloakroom and toilets. The monochromatic black and purple interior, walls covered in a quilted plush fabric, mirrors, black stone, and spectacular lighting determine the extraordinary, luxury and stylish climate of the place, which is designed in a special way and takes the reception of film art to the highest global standards. This place aspires to be a meeting venue not just for sophisticated film lovers, but also for the creators and participants of film art.

The top level, with a bar and 4 auditoriums, is the so-called “35 mm” music club, with a separate DJ booth, a bar and a restaurant zone. It is a place to rest, relax or organize invitation-only events. Its design is different than that of the whole complex. It is strongly illuminated by a giant window and a huge oval skylight in the ceiling. It surrenders to sunlight with its light-colored, almost white decor, white furniture, sofas and armchairs. This place is special in its dissimilarity to the remaining part of the design, being in opposition to it – a fresh breath. Owing to its functional identity and rearrangement possibilities, it is a perfect place to hold private events, meetings, or – in combination with the auditoriums – reviews, private showings, or film marathons.

The New Movie Theater.

We don’t go to the movies to admire the theatre, but would it kill theatre owners to build even one with an edge? Time and time again, we are disappointed in the new, mega multiplexes that are boring beyond belief in their sameness and recycled ideas. So, we must admit that there is not much to celebrate but are seeing little glimmers of hope and ingenuity once in a while. One example is the AMC Pacific Place Cinema in Hong Kong refurbished by Hong Kong-based James Law. The entrance areas to the six auditoriums seating 600 in 1.2-meter wide leather seats plus the a VIP theatre for 39 offer some unusual eye candy, but I’d love to see more.  Check the method.
