‘Spiderman: Across The Spiderverse’.

With all the DC news popping off recently, us comic book fans can’t can’t ever deny that Marvel always seems to have one in the chamber.  While the constant speculation over “No Way Home” has been at a fever pitch since the first look at the first bits of the first trailer LEAKED on someone’s cell phone… (yes, people have been throwing theories like frisbees since then.) we now have something different look forward to.  One of the best reviewed Spiderman films since 2006’s ‘Spiderman 2’, “Into The Spiderverse” put us in an entirely different pair of shoes when it came to the much loved protagonist.  Instead of following Peter Parker, “Into The Spiderverse” features the newer Miles Morales version of Spiderman (among a few others).  While Morales was hinted at in ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’, he was in full force in his own film, which not has an official release window, and titles.  No one knew that the next Spiderman news to rock the internet would have NOTHING to do with the 2023 sequel “Across The Spiderverse” but we’re happy that it is. For those of you were are oblivious to the WONDER that was “Into The Spiderverse”, take a look at what ‘WIRED’ dug up on how the original was created.

The Old New No Way Home?

By now, many to most of the people who see stuff here have already witnessed the awesomeness that is the first ‘Spiderman: No Way Home’ trailer. Dr. Strange makes much more than a cameo, but seems to be a full fledged protagonist although it’s a Spiderman story. Dr. Strange isn’t a stranger to (sorry, we couldn’t find a way around that one) to Peter Parker and his alter ego in the source material as we can see by a re-worked 90’s trailer. The 90’s Spiderman cartoon show is edited and married spectacularly over the audio of the first “No Way Home” trailer. They would be hard pressed to find, but if there’s anyone who hasn’t seen the original trailer, show them this one first before presenting the live action MCU version, just to see what they think. Either which way, enjoy.

The New Spiderman is… Peter Patterson?

Fans were recently treated to an amazing launch trailer for Marvel and Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man PS4, and now they have an exciting open-world trailer to enjoy.  The latest trailer doesn’t really reveal anything new about the highly anticipated game, but it does live up to its namesake and provides us with an excellent look at the open-world environment, highlighting some of the tasks players can do.  However, even though it doesn’t feature a lot of new gameplay footage, you can hear a fun debate between J. Jonah Jameson and Peter Parker (Peter Patterson) as they discuss the web-slinger’s impact on the city.  And to top it all off, the spectacular new footage reveals a better look at a few of the iconic Marvel landmarks that will appear in the game, including Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum and Avengers Tower.

Into The Spider-Controversey…

It’s amazing how quickly the internet can be set aflame by something small, or in this case something people should who feel the need to voice their opinion should already know.  The new Spider-Man is half black, half Dominican.  It’s not a big deal.  In Spiderman: Homecoming, when Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino mentions his “nephew that lives here” at the 2:23 mark, and that is a direct reference to Miles Morales, (who has a criminal uncle that he’s reluctantly forced to combat in the books).

The new Sony helmed, animated Spider-Man movie is much in the vein of the TMNT movie from the same animation studio, but promises to pass the torch to Miles Morales in a way that also introduces the “Spider-verse”, (a universe where Peter Parker is still alive, and all manner of amazing things still happen).  Many people don’t know about this change that happened in 2011, but have been quite vocal about the new Spider-Man being of a different race.  (To them I say, if you haven’t read a book since 2011, maybe get with the times… and literacy)  To the writing staff personally, if you’re skinny, and black, and can do incredible things to help other people in need, who’s to complain?  I enjoy it.  Lets see what Sony can do with this.

Marvel vs. Capcom IS BACK.

screen-shot-2016-12-03-at-12-24-19-pm

Earlier this afternoon, at the Playstation Experience, Marvel Entertainment & Capcom officially announced the long-awaited fourth chapter in their long-running Marvel vs. Capcom fighting game series, titled Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.  The ‘Marvel vs. Capcom’ series has led to MANY a dorm room scuffle in my day, but I’m glad that 10 years after the last outting, the franchise has returned.

The game is still in development at the moment, but it is expected to be available worldwide on the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC late 2017. Details on the lineup of playable characters and storyline weren’t provided, but the brief teaser provides a look at Captain Marvel & Iron Man facing off with Ryu and Mega Man X. We also catch a look at a mysterious figure – that looks a lot like Ultron – sitting in the dark.

Captain America: Civil War has been one of the most anticipated Marvel films (even more so than Age Of Ultron) but things will undoubtedly kick into high gear with the worlds first look at the new Spider-Man.  Check the trailer below.

Super Bowl 50’s Captain America TV Spot.

Screen Shot 2016-02-07 at 4.31.40 PM

Everyone knows that the Super Bowl is rife with new trailers, and exciting premieres, already we’ve seen ‘The Jungle Book’ and ‘Jason Bourne’ debut trailers, but the most exciting trailer by far of a film we’ve already seen a glimpse of, was ‘Captain America: Civil War’.  Filled with new looks at characters, and an ominous overtone, the ONLY thing wrong with this trailer is that there’s still no view of Spider-man.  (However, I’d rather wait until the actual movie to be surprised, so I’m not too upset by it.)

Marvel Comics, has been knocking pretty much anything they do out of the park over recent years, be it movies, comic re-telling, and now marketing.  It would be a bit difficult to conceive of Marvel heroes crossing into the rap game, but Axel Alonso, editor in chief of Marvel, and his team of artists conceived of variant covers in order to generate buzz for over fifty No.1 issues that Marvel started releasing last month.  These cover take popular and iconic hip hop covers, and give them a Marvel twist.  Check the method, and NOTE: The collection is so vast, we had to split this up into two posts.

Flemish Superheroes

Artist and Costume designer Jackie Tadeoni takes a new spin on superheroes costumes in Flemish style.

What if Superman was born in the sixteenth century?
And what if the Hulk was a Duke?
How might Van Eyck have portrayed Snow White?

The collection demonstrates the use of 17 century techniques counterpointing light and shadow to illustrate nobility and fragility of the super powerful of all times. It also invites you to celebrate the heroes of your childhood. These characters have become icons to reveal their humanity: tired of having to save the world without respite, promised to a destiny of endless immortality, forever trapped in their character.
The superheroes often live their lives cloaked in anonymity. These portraits give them a chance to « fix » their narcissism denied. By the temporal disturbance they produce, these images allow us to discover, under the patina of time, an unexpected melancholy of those who are to be invincible.

As science fiction meets history of art, time meets an inexhaustible desire for mythology which is within each of us.

Spiderman Is Officially Joining The Marvel Cinematic Universe.

sp5

Marvel and Sony have announced a partnership that will officially bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The deal calls for “the new Spider-Man” (as the press release describes him) to first appear in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film – though which film that will be is not named. Spider-Man will then star in his own new film, released by Sony, opening July 28th, 2017, which will be produced by Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal, who just stepped down as co-chairman of Sony.

The press release notes that Feige and Pascal “will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger.” Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films, though Feige’s involvement as a producer seems to indicate Marvel is heavily involved in the films now.

Fans will also be happy to hear that Marvel and Sony “are also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films,” which would indicate when Spider-Man gets his own solo films again, he’ll still likely be able to interact with MCU characters he’ll be seen with in the Marvel/Disney-distributed films.

scan0019-1

During the Sony hacks late last year, leaked emails revealed conversations between Marvel and Sony about this possibility that ultimately didn’t come to fruition. At the time, it was said the plan was for Spider-Man to be introduced into the MCU in Captain America: Civil War. That film will begin production soon, so it remains to be seen if Spider-Man will be included there or if his debut is saved for a different MCU film.

The announcement and Pascal’s involvement comes in the same week it was revealed she would be stepping down from her co-chairman position, in the wake of those hacks.  In the press release, Feige praises Pascal, stating, “I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie. Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”

For those wondering if there’s any possibility of a different person – say Miles Morales – behind the Spider-Man mask this time, Sony’s Doug Belgrad’s statement puts an end to that speculation. Says Belgrad, “Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker’s story into the future.”  Says Sony’s Michael Lynton, of the long hoped-for deal, “This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans.”

Donald Glover Is The New Spiderman?

Community - Season 4

This is how the story started…

Back when Sony was planning on rebooting Spider-Man, actor and comedian Donald Glover started a grassroots campaign online to get cast in the role. Though the part eventually went to Andrew Garfield, many titans of comics and film put their support behind Glover and the movement eventually led to the creation of Miles Morales, the new Ultimate Spider-Man. Now, Glover finally gets his wish and will provide the voice of Morales in an upcoming episode of Disney XD’s “Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors.”

“That’s the great part about the Spider-Man costume: He can be anybody.  Spider-Man could be a girl. Spider-Man could be an old man. You don’t know. So I just tried to be as me as possible, because you’re always just going to bring it back to yourself when you watch the show…Spider-Man is the best because you just don’t know who he is, and he’s funny and he’s poor. I understand Spider-Man a lot on that level. He’s just trying to make it.”

The new season of “Ultimate Spider-Man” premieres this Sunday on Disney XD, but Glover’s stint as Morales won’t air until next year. Also, lest you think that Glover is content with settling his “campaign” by providing this voice, he still has hopes to put on the tights some day.

“I still have hopes to do something like that one day. I don’t look at this as second place. Spider-Man, he’s such an icon — you have to do something with him.”

It’s easy to forget how much the comic stylings of the 60’s and 70’s have inspired modern films and just how timeless those two-dimensional, spandex-clad superheroes can be. This series replaces live action with the lines they were born from, interlacing cinematography with storyboard.

Super Hero Manatees.

wonder_womanatee___by_jharris batmanatee__by_jharris

Joel Micah Harris has gone and created some amazing pieces of fan art, which portray superheroes as manatees. It’s a little bizarre and utterly random, but you can’t deny that his pictures aren’t amazingly wonderful (not to mention hilarious).

Manatees get a lot of grief for being not overly intelligent, but that doesn’t mean they don’t look great when dressed up as Hawkeye or Wonder Woman.  Below are seven amazing pieces of fan art of manatee superheroes, though there are many more that can be found at Joel’s deviantart. You can also go onto Joel’s Red Bubble account if you’d like to own prints, T-shirts, or stickers of his artwork.

Super Heroes and Their Secret Identities

To be a superhero, you must usually have a secret identity, a “normal” personality with which you can blend in with the masses. The consequences of an enemy finding out their real-life identity could be most dire, oftentimes leading to the destruction of the hero’s alter-ego and/or the villain using a hero’s loved one(s) as bait. In some cases a Super-Hero chooses to keep their identity secret to avoid any legal ramifications (ex. Lawsuits) or public scrutiny that would ruin their life. Check out some of these illustrations.

‘The Amazing Spiderman’ 4 Minute Trailer.

Following its debut during the season premiere of “America’s Got Talent,” Sony Pictures has now brought online the 4-Minute Super Preview for The Amazing Spider-Man which you can watch below.  The trailer features a bridge scene from the movie that’s in all honesty pretty bad-ass, (and even shows how Parker deals with children with no concept of saving their own lives.)  HOWEVER, if you don’t want to spoil what I’m sure is an incredible scene in the movie, I suggest you skip this one.

Liam Brazier’s Superhero Collection.

Earlier this year, the angular and colorful illustrations of Star Wars characters by UK-based illustrator and animator Liam Brazier drew everyone’s attention. In addition to the Start Wars characters that in their clunkiness lend themselves to geometric treatments, Brazier has also attacked several popular super heroes with his style of illustration.  What makes Brazier’s work even more interesting is that the illustrations are not created in Illustrator using vectors. Instead, he draws each shape with Photoshop’s polygonal selection tool and then fills them in with color.  Further than that, the way he named his super hero collection was incredibly unique.  Check the method below.

The Minimalist Hero.

As super hero movies continue to dominate the summer blockbuster season, the graphic designers behind their poster seem to have been running the same circles.  The posters for Ironman 2 look quite similar to the Tron posters, which in turn, look strikingly like the classic Star Wars posters.  Designer Marko Manev has taken his time to turn the tables on this trend.  Take a look at his brilliant minimalistic super hero posters.

Tron Vs. Marvel

After catching a glimpse at the Japanese Tron: Legacy Poster, I got curious about more extra little goodies surrounding the release of Tron.  One of the ones I couldn’t believe was the mash between Tron and Marvel. To celebrate the release of Disney’s Tron: Legacy, Marvel is going to release an awesome collection of variant covers that re-imagine the classic Marvel superheroes as Tron characters.  Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and more—re-interpreted out in the unique visual style of the TRON universe…. Check the method below.
