From the simple nursery rhyme–like bars of Kurtis Blow’s “The Breaks” to the smooth East Coast flow of Notorious B.I.G.’s hit song “Hypnotize” to the speedy delivery of Kendrick Lamar’s “Rigamortis,” rhyming in rap music has not only evolved, it’s gotten better.

The video below explores how some of the greatest rappers of all time create memorable, lyrically dense rhymes.

Rick Ross Ft. Future – No Games (Official Video)

rick-ross-no-games

Rick Ross’ affinity for drug lords has never been a secret. Recently, he appeared on the Starz network television series Magic City as Miami kingpin, “Butterball.” In his latest video “No Games”, Ross takes it a step further by comparing himself to Tony Montana. Though the song features Future (also known for a Scarface self-comparison) we don’t see him in the video. Instead, we get tons of Al Pacino, often humorously synced up to the lyrics, as though Future’s unmistakable voice flows from the Oscar winner.  “No Games” will appear on Ricky Rozay’s next album, Mastermind, currently without a release date.

Audio Push – Shine

Audio Push has a forthcoming project on the way, which is entitled ‘Come as You Are’. If all of its tracks come as correct as Shine, then listeners are in for a treat. The HS87 duo, made up of Pricetag and Oktane, displays a style that is more fluid than shiny, but works all the same. Hazebanga and Eric Choicehandle production duties, accenting their glossy, melodic arrangement with a few stretched Janet Jackson vocal samples. Atop the beat, Audio Push showcase laid-back, yet quirky flows with just a touch of twang. Be sure to keep Shine on your playlist as a reminder that ‘Come As You Are’ is due out this fall.

The music video preserves a sense of classic R&B, with Miguel truly channeling his inner all-around showman – performing nifty leg twists while boasting an expansive vocal range. Kendrick and Miguel seem to have a great deal of fun in the video, which serves as a suitably mellow parallel to an already silky track.

Started From The Bottom – Drake

Drake Promo

Drake shared “Started From The Bottom,” the first single from his as-yet-untitled new album, and from the sound of things, it’ll be a departure from the luxuriant moroseness of Take Care. “Started From The Bottom” is a hard, simple rap song with a nagging piano loop and some serious 808 programming.
