How To Hang A Maze.

Brazillian artist Ernesto Neto is known for his enormous, fiber-based installations that plunge viewers into a multi-sensory landscape of organic elements: people are encouraged to walk through canals of stretched yarn and grasp the structural weavings, while spicy scents like turmeric and cumin are often diffused throughout the room. Similarly immersive and imposing, Neto’s latest work at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is one of his largest to date. “SunForceOceanLife” is a hand-crocheted, walkable maze of yellow, orange, and green threads that stretch 79 feet across the gallery and spiral 12 feet in the air. The pliable installation centers around “fire, the vital energy that enables life on this planet,” the artist says, sharing that each polymer string utilized is burned at the end to further infuse the piece with sacred, meditative rituals. “I hope that the experience of this work will feel like a chant made in gratitude to the gigantic ball of fire we call the sun, a gesture of thanks for the energy, truth, and power that it shares with us as it touches our land, our oceans, and our life,” he writes.

Plastic balls also fill the pathway and shift underfoot, which forces those passing through the suspended structure to intentionally maintain their balance. Neto explains:

It directly engages the body as does a joyful dance or meditation, inviting us to relax, breathe, and uncouple our body from our conscious mind. The sensation of floating, the body cradled by the crocheted fruits of our labor, brings to mind a hammock: the quintessential indigenous invention that uplifts us and connects us to the wisdom and traditions of our ancestors.

“SunForceOceanLife” is on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston through September 26, 2021. You can see more of Neto’s interactive, site-specific projects at Galerie Max Hetzler. (via designboom)

Höweler + Yoon’s Swing Time Illuminates Boston Park

‘Swing time’ by höweler + yoon architecture is an interactive playscape composed of 20 illuminated ring-shaped swings. Designed in three different sizes, the welded polypropylene swings enable users to engage, exercise and play as individuals or in groups. The installation activates the temporary urban park and creates a community area between the Boston convention, exhibition center and D street. LED lighting within the swings are regulated by custom micro-controllers that signal their activity levels. This happens thanks to the internal accelerometer that measures the forces of the swing. This means when they are static, they emit a soft, white light and a switching one from white to purple when in motion. These responsive play elements invite users to interact with each other and create more of a community at the Boston park.

Learn To Play With Your Food.

pixelate_06 pixelate_05
Pixelate is a Guitar-Hero-style eating game in which players compete in a one-minute showdown to see who can eat the most food in the correct order. (Yeszir) A digital interface built into a custom dining table shows players which foods to eat and when, while the game detects whether they’ve eaten the correct food by measuring the food’s resistance on the fork. Pixelate gameifies the act of eating, challenging players to consider whether they think before they eat, or eat before they think.

The Greatest Video Game To Ever Hit The Internet.

Demonstrating once again that its marketing department is full of geniuses, Old Spice launched Dikembe Mutombo’s 4 1/2 Weeks To Save The World three weeks ago, and it’s going viral to hilarious effect. Featuring the voice of Dikembe Mutombo himself, the game sets the tone:

dikembemutombo

“A kabillion some odd years ago-ish, the Mayans predicted the world will end on December 21, 2012, which is a terrible idea since we as humans have not even invented a self-combing hair yet.

“Someone had to defend our planet and prevent this from happening. And that defender had to be me: Dikembe Mutumbo.

“For 4 1/2 weeks, I will courageously battle to save our world and, with your help, carve additional time into the Mayan calendar to buy us more time on the earth. That’s why this game is called: “Dikembe Mutombo’s 4 1/2 Weeks to Save the World.”

Each week, the site includes a new retro-style game placing you in the huge shoes of Dikembe Mutombo and, with the help of Science the bear, pitting you against whatever pop-culture reference is currently threatening to destroy the world. The first week’s game sees the world threatened by a South Korean dance craze that ”is well past its natural social buzz shelf life,” and distracting Americans from voting.  Click any of the photos to check the method.

PLAY Comme des Garçons x Coca-Cola.

Ashley Shen created designs for a limited edition collaboration between Coca-Cola and PLAY Comme des Garçons. Presented are three designs, that package the classic Coke can in the PLAY design.  Whether or not these designs are going to become available for purchase in your local convenience store is unclear.

YMCMB vs. The Fantasy Factory.

It’s always interesting to see two worlds collide, but although Rob Dyrdek and his little cousin Drama might not seem to be the type to hang with Young Money, nothing could be farther than the truth.  The majority of the YMCMB crew (excluding Drake, and J Mills) came down to the world famous Fantasy Factory in L.A. to kick it with Drama and friends to play ball, go kart, and just relax.  Check the method below.

Ewan Dobson: Trance DJ/Acoustic Guitarist.

There are always different skill levels in any art or craft.  Your essential 3 are, novice, intermediate, and master.  Every so often you cross the barrier from master to ‘show off’, (Much like the LA Lakers, to ‘The Harlem Globe Trotters’), and I think Ewan Dobson may have just done that.  Like the Globe Trotters, Dobson has demonstrated enough insane skill with an acoustic guitar to make anyone who has a respect for live music drop their jaws.  Check his playing a trance song on a guitar (which for anyone out there dumb enough not to know… is VERY very hard.)

No Strings Attached.

I’ve been working much more closely with rock artists in the last few months, and I’ve earned a whole new respect for guitarists.  The Hyper Touch Guitar is from the mind of Max Battaglia at Givingshape Design Studio, and totally insane.  This unorthodox design replaces strings with a multi-touch screen, allowing the user to adjust the number of “strings” and frets, as well as tuning and sound effects.  A wireless command center that permits endless customization and infinite possibilities of expression.
