Back in 2011, Nike revealed a limited run of Back to the Future Part II-inspired sneakers. The edition, set at 1500 pairs, replicated the future 2015 Nike MAGs worn by Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly in the 1989 film, although lacked the movie’s “power laces” function. The whole lot went directly on eBay as part of a charity effort on the part of the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Today, Nike designer Tinker Hatfield has revealed to Sole Collector that the company is getting ready to take another look at Marty’s shoes and will release functioning power laces next year. “Are we gonna see power laces in 2015?” were Hatfield’s exact words. “To that, I say YES!” Of course, there’s no word yet of how limited a production run Nike might target this time around nor is there any confirmation that the laces will appear on another replica of those specific shoes. That being said, Back to the Future fans may very soon have a chance to own the pair of shoes they’ve been dreaming about for 25 years.

A new, more compressive NIKE flyknit construction in the shoe upper secures the runner’s foot to the shoe platform. The unique zoned performance mapping pattern of the NIKE flyknit upper is derived from insights on how pressure is exerted on the top of the foot. NIKE sport research lab scientists employed pressure-mapping technology to locate stress areas, and designers used the data to inform the new upper. Zones on the top of the foot have engineered stretch built to enable natural flex, while a tighter weave at the perimeter stabilizes the forefoot and heel. Additionally, elasticized construction fits securely around the ankle for a comfortable, secure fit. By knitting a one-piece upper, NIKE flyknit construction reduces NIKE’s typical upper waste by an average of 88 percent.

Kanye West is no stranger to the fashion world, having released his own collection and, most recently, working with Nike to produce the much-hyped Air Yeezy’s. The Todd Bratrud-designed series of “420″ inspired shoes has become a Nike SB springtime tradition. And several Bratrud designs in the series – Cheech & Chong, the Skunk Dunk, have been among the most sought-after SB releases in recent years. For 420 2012, Nike SB has given Bratrud the boat shoe-derived Stefan Janoski to work with – a shoe which already has some history with reefer culture. The California-based artist has taken the gum-rubber sole used on some of the more popular Janoski releases, and matched it to a bone suede upper. Hunter green serves as the complimentary color, used for piping on the midsole and upper, and for laces and tongue tag. Overall, less of a heady vibe than the past Bratrud 420 designs – Nike did catch some mild flak for the Cheech & Chong release – but by any measure a solid release for fans of the Janoski. Check out images after the jump, and stay tuned for a release in late April 2012.
