T-Pain Flips The Twitch.

Everyone knows that celebrities at the end of the day, are just regular people like us. Many stars have been known to voice their love for dabbling in video games from ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ to World of Warcraft. Now we KNOW we’re late to the game here, (no pun intended) but upon first hear of rapper T-Pain joining “Twitch” the video game streaming service, where you can WATCH players play the game, along with the players themselves, we knew we had to take a look. It’s one thing to hear about your favorite rapper or singer playing your favorite video game, but to see them in FULL spectacle during their introduction must be a treat. That being said, T-Pain has to hold the title for THE MOST fantastic Twitch intro in Hip Hop history, and it true Twitch fashion, the whole world can see it. Now we know this occurred a little over a year ago when Covid lockdown was in full effect, but it’s spectacular enough to share never the less.

Caity Costa – Cleanse

Caity Costa has returned with her 2nd single off “The Butterly EP”. Heavy hitting bass is an unexpected yet welcome backdrop to Costa’s soft singing with gentle Melodie’s and soothing harmonies.  The songs content is geared towards finding a new beginning after dirtier times.  Which can lend itself to an innumerable number of situations we all face either day to day or over time.  The overall positive and uplifting tone of the song is reason enough to give it a listen, but as her collection of releases grows, “Cleanse” is a track that will resonate with anyone, but most of all with those who need to hear something uplifting. Watch below for just a quick preview, and click the cover above to stream.

Caity Costa – Butterfly.

Caity Costa has been on the music scene for quite some time, be it in music videos, on magazine covers, or just straight up in your ears with a flurry of solo songs and collaborations with artists all over. Now she’s on the scene once again with her newest title track “Butterfly”, just one quarter of the Butterfly EP, being released all throughout the month of October. The song ‘Butterfly’ itself finds a truly unique and refreshing blend between sultry R&B singing, and an incredible spoken word poem embodying her thoughts and feelings. Its a joy to listen to, and the song embodies the emotions of many, while its presentation has only been approached by few. The wonderfully executed track was produced by Bat Area native Joe Major, and is available for a listen by just clicking the cover above, and hear a sample in the promo video below.

Papoose & Lil Wayne – ‘Thought I Was Gunna Stop’ Freestyle.

With the lyrical strength Papoose has had from the second he entered the rap arena, it’s always been a mystery of mysteries as to why he’s constantly overlooked. Every once In a while, regardless of their situation, an rapper doesn’t have to punch down on a freestyle track, or punch up… in ‘Though I Was Gonna Stop’, Papoose matches wits with Lil Wayne, and simply punches LINES. Check the method below, and dont fear to let us know what you think about this Timbaland produced track below. We only wish it was a little bit longer.

Lia Sabella’s Island Suite.

As much as we’d like it to be, this isn’t a tour of Lia Sabella’s personal island suite, however, it’s something we’d love even more… Her 3rd EP “Island Suite”. The 7 track project features production primarily from ‘F1rst Class’, and is elegantly and filled out with Lia’s mellifluous singing. The songs range in topics like relationships, emotional compromise, and distressing in such a way as to connect with listeners on an emotional level, leaving them feeling relaxed. From the beautiful imagery to the quality of sounds, and fluidity of the entire project, “Island Suite” is one to definitely lay back and relax to, no matter what you may be feeling inside. Take a listen to “Vacation” below, just for a taste of an EP that is for sure to be on repeat in your headphones soon.

Click any of the photos to stream or download the entire R&B project produced by F1rst Class, and once again, beautifully sung by Lia Sabella. If the sultry sounds of this EP don’t leave you in a great place wherever you are, they will definitely make you want to take a getaway… Just look at how relaxed she looks.

The DJ Earworm Addresses The United States Of Pop…. 2018.

For more than a decade, DJ Earworm has been blending the year’s top songs into a massive “United States of Pop” mashup at the end of each year. He began the series in 2007, kicking off with a combo of songs from Soulja Boy, Akon, Avril Lavigne, Rihanna, Fergie, and more. It’s been 11 years since that inaugural mashup, and Earworm hasn’t slowed down in the slightest.  His 2018 edition just made its YouTube debut on December 4, highlighted by tracks from Ariana Grande, Post Malone, Zedd, Childish Gambino, Marshmello, and more.

The four-minute mashup kicks off with songs from Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line, and Maroon 5 and Cardi B, before cycling through Drake‘s iconic “In My Feelings,” Bruno Mars and Cardi B’s “Finesse,” Travis Scott and Drake’s “Sicko Mode,” and dozens others.  Regardless of your personal taste in music, any TRUE DJ has to admit that this is an impressive feat to accomplish.  Take a listen.

Want Some Waterproof Headphones? Talk To xFyro!

It may seem like quite a closely contended match between different earbuds and the companies making them.  Some are compatible with all mobile platforms, others boast of incredible battery lives, and some work as fitness trackers that sit within your ears. Now, the Aria by xFyro, claims to be one of the world’s only truly wireless earphones with an IPx67 waterproof rating.

Let’s understand first what the IPx67 rating actually is. The IP Code, or the Ingress Protection Code determines the ability of a product (usually electronics) to protect itself from intrusion by elements from the outside, especially dust or water. The first digit in the rating determines protection against dust. A rating of 6 usually means the product is completely impervious to dust of all sizes. The second number in the rating determines liquid ingress. The 7 rating in the 67 means the Aria can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter tested for a period of 30 minutes. The IPx67 rating on the Aria therefore allows it to be used while in the gym (it being impervious to sweat), in the shower, or even while swimming in a pool.

Aside from its water and dust resistance, the Aria leverages battery-related advancements over the past few years to provide a stunning 32 hours of playback time. The earbuds themselves work for 8 hours continuously (that’s the equivalent of about 5 movies or more than 160 songs), and the slick, hockey-puck case gives you an additional 24 hours of charging time. The Aria also comes with Bluetooth 5.0, the latest standard that allows for instant pairing by simply bringing the earphones near your smartphone. With crystal quality sound that’s unfettered, the Aria also has a capacitive touch surface that lets you control music playback as well as activate the voice assistant on your phone.

Designed to work across multiple mobile platforms, the Aria is, to frame things accurately, a slight upgrade in all departments. With a significantly better battery, better audio courtesy a 16mm driver (more than thrice as large as the Airpods), better waterproofing, and a universal approach, it may just be the wireless earphones to beat.  Pick some up here.

2 Chainz’s Trap-A-Velli Tre standout “Watch Out” now has an official music video, and it just might be in the running for best of the year. The hilarious clip features the head of the Atlanta rapper being plastered on various bodies, everything from a dancing boy to a couple guys playing basketball and more. As if the song wasn’t already popular enough, this undeniably entertaining visual should ensure that it stays in rotation for weeks and months to come.

Who’s Your Daddy? (Apparently It’s PSY).

South Korean pop star and viral video sensation Psy is at it again. The singer has debuted a brand new video that rivals his breakthrough hit “Gangnam Style” and features Psy showing off some crazy new dance moves.  After Psy rose to stardom in 2012 on the basis of the music video for his song “Gangnam Style,” which featured his wackily corny dance moves and quickly climbed the charts to become the most-watched YouTube video ever (surpassing 2.5 billion views worldwide.)  With his new release “Daddy” the wait has begun to see just how impressive Psy’s numbers will be.  Check the method.

Duckwrth – Psycho (Official Video).

duckwrth

It’s rare that the music videos provide us with a form of story telling now a days, be it straightforward or more abstract, the Hip Hop video landscape is littered with cars and falling money, and single colored backgrounds.  (No offense to anyone who has a video like that… I’ve been in a few myself).  The social commentary and quick witted delivery of Duckwrth’s single “Psycho” required accompanying visuals that also made a statement.  The sleek and sultry bass lines provided by The Kickdrums, move the video through a few basic but beautifully shot scenes.  Director Nick Snow and crew did a wonderful job, from a full 720 degree tracking shot in the park, to the bright and slightly ominous apartment ending with blood red walls.  Check the method below.

DJs! How About ‘Netflix’ for your favorite Vinyl Records?

mag-10Collector-t_CA0-superJumbo

Digital music sales have taken a dive, and meanwhile, vinyl is in the midst of a huge swell that probably won’t let up anytime soon. So what has 2015′s vinyl surge wrought? VYNL, or Netflix for records.

The service is pretty straightforward, although rather than picking particular albums you want to rent, a la Netflix, you select from VNYL’s categories—which are called #vibes. This is where it goes slightly adrift, but we’ll focus on the service because it’s a cool idea. Say you want #work or #danceparty or #betweenthesheets. You pick one of those and each month you get a pack of LPs to play. You can keep what you want for as low as 12 bucks a record, and send back what you’re not feeling at the end of the month.

It’s worth noting, though, that there are other similar services cropping up, such as Vinyl Me, Please, which costs $23-$27 a month. We haven’t tried either service, but the idea behind them seems like a good way to bulk up on vinyl if you’re just getting started And it’s a good thing to get into—probably the most worthwhile way to own music in a world of immediate but downgraded music downloads.

Lil Dev – 4 My Jeeps (Freestyle).

DJ Storm

Album artwork sketched by Michael Tudor.

Since the first time I stumbled up Action Bronson’s “4 My Jeeps” I’ve personally been in love with the track, and with the beat.  Working in a music studio with people coming in and out all day long, eventually you’ll find someone to compliment a beat with as good, if not a more dynamic flow than the original.  Enter, Lil Dev, young, talented, and charismatic, this quick freestyle is just a taste of his lyrical tenacity over one of my favorite beats. Check the method.

Big Sean – I Don’t F*ck With You (Official Video).

bigsean3

Touchdown. Big Sean plays the field in the cinematic video for his Kanye West and DJ Mustard-produced anthem “I Don’t Fuck With You” featuring E-40.  The G.O.O.D. Music MVP stars as the quarterback of his high school football team, the Lions, in the Lawrence Lamont-directed clip, which was shot at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, Calif. Against the odds, Sean makes a last-minute attempt to save his team from losing the game and comes away with a huge win.  There are plenty of cameos too from Mustard, E-40, Power 106′s Big Boy, Teyana Taylor, and Kanye, who stars as the team coach. Plus, peep the Naya Rivera look-alike, who flashes her boobs.  In between his collaborations with Calvin Harris and girlfriend Ariana Grande, Sean has been in the studio with Chris Brown, Kanye, and more working on his third album, and hopes to release it by the end of the year.  “You guys might be getting it for a stocking stuffer, who knows?” he recently told Carson Daly.  Watch Sean lead his team to victory, check the method below.

DJ Storm Reviews ‘Fables’ by Manni Phantom.

Up until now November 7th was just a date in the eleventh month of our year, but as of now, it represents one of the most unique EP releases by an independent artist in recent memory.  Manni Phantom’s latest drop ‘Fables’ is a short, but dense collection of stories, interludes, and unforgettable beats that will catch the ear of any type of music lover.  From the first track in the 6 song collection, “Dead Man Walking” starts off strong.  The track boasts a bass-heavy beat, composed of classic piano’s and strings, but drizzled with extremely digital vocal harmonics that create a great foundation to support the heavy lyrical content that starts off this EP.

‘Dead Man Walking’ is rife with complex flow and true feelings about the start of a career in music.  “My daily routine is chasin’ a dream/ sellin’ beat for the same price as an eighth of some weed.“… “I swear its so close I can taste it now/ and everybody want the dream, but nobody wanna chase it down/ and that’s where I excel on everyone/ because investing in yourself costs less than having fun.”  With such a dynamic lyrical output, you can hear the emotions that were meant to come through on every song.  The second track, titled the same as the EP, Fables, reflects more on the feelings of affection towards a particular, unnamed woman.

The lyrical prowess of the song falls in line with the high standard of the rest of the collect, yet what’s exceedingly special about this track is the genre it falls into.  Some albums by hall of fame artists morph between genres as the project continues, the song ‘Fables’ does this all in 4 minute and 35 seconds.  In one song, Hip Hop, Electronic, Dub Step, R&B, Classical, Alternative, and New Wave inspirations can clearly be heard, without the song turning into a car-crash of different ideas.  The mellifluous transition between musical styles sets the track “Fables” into a bracket of its own.  Next on the list is ‘Cursed/33 Percent’.

Click the pic for more.

The first of this divided song, ‘Cursed’ lyrically touches on a variety of different subjects, from the obsessions people have with money (As expressed by the chant “Cursed by a dollar bill”), to the perceived view of people starting in the entertainment industry.  “Tell me your passion, it better not be rappin’/girl why can’t you be in college or somethin?/ every female I meet is like a model or somthin’/ it’s crazy, addicted to the bottle or somethin’, like that/ addicted to game, or addicted to fame/ roll it up, spark it up, she’s addicted to flame./ cursed by her own poison self inflicting the pain/ cursed by a f*ckin dollar, aint no cents in her brain.”  After a swift, but fluid change, one song becomes the next, and ’33 Percent’ begins.

Opening with a quote from Brett Sweeny of BRE and Team ISO, the song ’33 Percent’ is a mellow, Hip Hop based, well presented breakdown of  what makes Manni Phantom a great artist.  “33 percent strugle, 33 percent hustle, 33 changed, 1 percent stayed the same, I ain’t frontin, so I keep it 100 percent.”  The beat remains relatively in one place, and allows the views, and opinions to be expressed without being drowned out by production, and once again the lyrical content is light years above the gambit of unsigned artists in the Bay Area, which makes both ‘Cursed’ and ’33 Percent’ stand out.  The interlude ‘The Camera’ (a short, simple, opinion on what can happen on the other side of the camera) slides perfectly into the next track in the collection, ‘Presence’.

Pieces of ‘Presence’ are quite reminiscent of the Timbaland and Magoo days, sprinkled with a generous amount of Kanye West, which makes for some very happy listening.  The complexity of the beat once it gets going is enough to keep any listener engaged.  As the beat marches on, Manni has a mellifluous way of flowing over the beat in different pitches that reflect the tone and gravity of the lyrics he’s presenting.  It’s this style of presentation that makes ‘Presence’ the most radio-ready song of the collection.  ‘Presence’ is ahead of it’s time, but it the song best apt to draw new listeners into the entire ‘Fables’ project.  The final track on this 6 song EP, is ‘Ghost Stories’.

‘Ghost Stories’ breaks the mold that hold the previous 5 songs together, without sounding too abstract to be on the project.  The sound, emotion, composition, and delivery on ‘Ghost Stories’ is unique in its own right, yet shows more of the diversity Manni Phantom is capable of as an artist and a producer.  Although having a minor key, and a slight darkness in it’s undertones, ‘Ghost Stories’ presents some of the most playful lyrics on the project, “…know some homies that ain’t make it, that’s ghost stories (for real)/ and that’s real talk, no fib, no fable, no toy story.”  But ‘Ghost Stories’ is the final act in what is a very well rounded, unique sounding project that is worth the listen from fans of any style of music.

Click the pic for more.

In conclusion, ‘Fables’ is a perfect example of how not everything that people listen to on repeat has to be something they heard in the club.  The project has a definitive hand in making the point that “dope” music doesn’t just consist of a 4 note loop over 808’s placed way too high in the mix.  ‘Fables’ is produced, and performed (which entails rapping and singing) by the same person, (which is extremely rare these days), which most emerging artists could never fathom.  The engineering is not too simple, nor is it too gaudy, which provides the right sound for both the beats and the lyrics, (another factor many a developing artist is lacking now a days.)  And over all, one of Manni Phantom’s strong points is finesse, his ability to go crazy with production, but knowing when to do so, and when to keep it simple.  Everything all said and done, the only two points left to make are that, ‘Fables’ is for sure worth the listen, and as Manni Phantom stated himself… ‘The competition’s better dead.’  Click any of the photos to take a listen.
