Jellyfish In SPACE.


The all-female artist collective ‘Beyond Earth’ introduces ‘Living Light’, a vibrant, jellyfish-like balloon artwork designed to be launched into earth’s stratosphere.  The craft combines biology, artificial intelligence, and aerospace technology to explore the connections between our blue planet and the boundlessness of outer space.  On June 18, 2021, the installation flew nearly 19 miles above the Earth’s surface aboard the inaugural trial flight of a shuttle called ‘Neptune One’, becoming the first large-scale artwork to fly into space.  The design by ‘Beyond Earth’ draws inspiration from the vast biodiversity of aquatic life on Earth.  “The depths of the ocean reveal an endless frontier of Earth’s biology, where many of the inhabitants create and use light in beautiful, often mesmerizing ways”.  ‘Living Light’ mimics the iridescent qualities of these marine species, illuminating its surroundings as it enters the dark abyss of space.  To realize this one-of-a-kind piece, the artists researched thousands of aquatic life forms, creating an extensive dataset of biological structures that float, move, and glow in the ocean, as if traveling in space. 

The dataset was then used for machine learning to generate the inner organ designs for ‘Living Light’, a method that combines biomimicry and artificial intelligence.  In this way, hundreds of artistic images of new imaginary space organisms were formed, with ‘Living Light’ taking shape as the summation of these creatures.  On June 18, 2021, luxury spaceflight experience company Space Perspective completed the first test flight for ‘Neptune One’, a full-size capsule simulator powered by a space balloon.  The shuttle carried the ‘Living Light’ artwork to above 99% of the Earth’s atmosphere.  During the journey, the movement triggered color and light shifts within the iridescent and fluorescent materials of the piece.  The changes that occurred – both internally and externally – not only made the vessel appear lifelike, but also alluded to the transformational experiences of spaceflight.  ‘Living Light’ ventured to a new world to return transformed, offering a new perspective of Earth.  For both teams at beyond Earth and Space Perspective, this whole experience serves as a metaphor for bringing humankind to space, as well as a celebration of the dawn of commercial space travel.

Pink Star Diamond Auctioned for a Record of $83 million

A plum-sized diamond known as the “Pink Star” was auctioned in Geneva Wednesday for $83 million, a world record for a gemstone. The diamond had been estimated at $60 million. Three years ago, Sotheby’s set an auction record of $46.2 million for a diamond when it sold the “Graff Pink” gemstone. The Sotheby’s auction came a day after rival house Christie’s sold an almond-shaped diamond dubbed “The Orange” for $35.5 million, also a record in its category. The 59.60-carat “Pink Star” is the largest in its class ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), with the second biggest less than half its size. The sparkling oval-cut rock measures 2.69 by 2.06 centimetres (1.06 by 0.81 inches), and weighs 11.92 grammes (0.026 pounds). In addition to its top color and clarity ratings, it falls into a rare subgroup with the purest diamond crystals and extraordinary optical transparency, comprising less than two percent of all gem diamonds. The “Pink Star” was 132.5 carats in the rough when it was mined by De Beers in Africa in 1999, according to Sotheby’s.. It was cut and polished over two years by Steinmetz Diamonds, and unveiled to the public in 2003 under the title of the “Steinmetz Pink”.

China’s Underground Hotel.


A few years ago, British engineering firm Atkins won the rights to design an extravagant hotel deep within a 100-metre pit in Shanghai‘s Songjiang District.  Construction on the Intercontinental Shimao Shanghai Wonderland finally commenced last month, and the hotel is scheduled to open in early 2015.

The 19-storey structure will be grafted onto the side of the 100-meter pit, with 16 floors burrowing down towards the deep quarry floor.  It will hold about 380 rooms which are expected to start at about $320 per night. The building will also feature an underwater restaurant.

A massive 60-meter tall glass curtain wall adjacent to the main structure will descend down the rockface in a manner that will “mimic a waterfall”, while the surrounding cliffs will be given over to bungee jumping and rockclimbing.

The Largest Rare Pink Diamond, Found In Australia.


Mining giant Rio Tinto has unearthed a “remarkable” 12.76 carat pink diamond in Australia, the largest of the rare and precious stones ever found in the country.  Named the Argyle Pink Jubilee, the huge rough stone was found at Rio’s pink diamond operations in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and would take 10 days to cut and polish, the miner said.  “This rare diamond is generating incredible excitement,” said Josephine Johnson from Rio’s Argyle Pink Diamonds division.  “A diamond of this caliber is unprecedented — it has taken 26 years of Argyle production to unearth this stone and we may never see one like this again.  Rio said extremely high quality pink diamonds could fetch in excess of US$1 million per carat, meaning it is likely to go for at least $10 million.  Soaring demand for the extremely rare jewel has seen pink diamond prices skyrocket in the past 20 years and they are now among “the most concentrated forms of wealth on earth and well in excess of white diamonds,” Rio said.  The miner describes it as an “elite and discrete” market with buyers including royalty, heads of state, celebrities and “other very wealthy individuals.”

Skipark 360.


Sweden’s CF Møller Architects has just signed off on the new and spectacular Skipark 360°- set to be the largest indoor ski resort in the world.  The winter park will house the only indoor ski slope to meet the requirements for hosting the World Cup, measuring 700 meters long and with a drop of 160 meters.  At a height of approx. 135 m, it will be one of Sweden’s largest buildings, and will become a landmark in the forest landscape just outside Stockholm.  The complex will also contain a 3.5 km cross-country skiing tunnel, an arena for biathlon, ice hockey, bandy and figure skating, and a snow park for snowboarding.  There will also be restaurants, shops, a spa and hotel and conference facilities, offering panoramic views of the countryside.  Skipark 360° is estimated to cost between 1.5 to 2 billion Swedish kroner ($219 – 292 million), with work to start at the end of 2013.

World Class Churches.


Although I’m quite notorious for not being a religious individual, I have to respect the beauty of churches.  Churches  have been carved and built so magnificently, in a way that they make everyone simply stand and marvel at their great architecture. Today I present a showcase of some quite beautiful and breathtaking churches around the world, I couldn’t find the names and locations of ALL the churches on the list, so in fairness, I left them out.

Gulp: The Movie – Via Nokia.


Less than a year after making the world’s smallest animation, Nokia just ticked off that large, lurking item on the to-do list: conjuring the world’s largest stop motion animation.  The new film, Gulp, tells the simple story of a fisherman who gets swallowed by a larger predator. It was shot entirely with the Nokia N8 phone. “Strapping the device to a 40-meter high cherry picker on a massive expanse of beach with gale force winds seemed like a good challenge for the smartphone,” says David Bruno, a creative at Wieden + Kennedy London which created the spot along with directing team Sumo Science, from animation studio Aardman, and sand artist Jamie Wardley, from sand and ice sculpture specialists, Sand in Your Eye.

Sumo Science, aka Ed Patterson and Will Studd, director of photography Toby Howell and Wardley, literally fought time and tides over the five-day shoot to complete the painstaking animation process before the sea wiped out their efforts. The team used stencils, modded rakes, and a crew of sand artists and volunteer animation students to create the sand shapes and characters that brought the narrative to life.  The action was captured by three Nokia N8s suspended from a crane, with each frame representing a single shot from the phone cam.

This spot is part of an ongoing campaign using unique, often technically challenging videos to showcase the capabilities of Nokia handsets. And while you probably won’t be snapping photos of your family with a cherry picker anytime soon, it’s not a bad way to tout the 12-megapixel camera and “Carl Zeiss 4-element Tessar optics” in the N8. The largest scene in Gulp occupied 11,000 square feet of Pendine Beach in South Wales.  The agency says the film earned a Guinness nod for “world’s largest stop motion animation set.”  Last September, W+K London earned buzz for the smallest ever stop motion animation, Dot, also filmed with an N8 equipped with Cellscope, a microscope imaging device.  Watch the Making of Gulp below.

The Sickest Snowman Ever.


We may be in the middle of the summer, but that doesn’t mean one can’t be thinking about winter.  I came across this video of a slide in Tahoe build like a snowman that just blew my mind.  The entire project took over 80 hours of shoveling, and although I’m not sure how long it lasted, I’m sure there was many more than 80 hours of fun had on it.  Check the method.

The World’s Largest Wooden Structure.


What is there not to like about Metropol Parasol?  The waffle-like crown structure in Seville, Spain has been finally completed in April 2011 after a competition held by the city of Seville in 2004.  Located at Plaza de la Encarnacion, the stunning sequence of undulating parasols comprises the world’s largest wooden structure. The Metropol Parasol project was part of the redevelopment of the Plaza de la Encarnacíon, designed by J. MAYER H. Architects, this project becomes the new icon for Seville, a place of identification and to articulate Seville’s role as one of the world´s most fascinating cultural destinations.

Wanna Rent a Super-Yacht?

Exuma built by Perini Navi, in the South Pacific.  The Exuma, the first motor yacht from the world-famous builder of the Maltese Falcon, and can accommodate ten guests in five luxurious staterooms.  The aluminum-hulled Exuma is the first model in the Picchiotti Vitruvius series, a collaboration between Perini Navi, Vitruvius Ltd. and architect Philippe Briand.  Interior furnishings were designed by Perini Navi’s in-house team with a focus on classic maritime style tradition, using oak, teak and Italian marble.  The sleek ship has a range of 5,500 nautical miles at 12 knots and comes equipped with a fully customized 16.4 ft. amphibious vehicle and a Hov Pod 12 ft. hovercraft housed in two tender garages with gull-wing doors.  The Exuma will also be available for charter on a weekly basis for $250,000.
