Over the past several months, hoverboards have inexplicably become a regular topic of conversation. It started with a Back to the Future-inspired prank from Tony Hawk early last year. Before long, a Kickstarter for a real hoverboard started making the rounds and now, over a year after the original prank video, Lexus is building its own ride-able hoverboard.

SLIDE is the fourth project in the Lexus ‘Amazing in Motion’ series, which has included drones and robots in the past. According to Lexus’ website, the hoverboard “uses magnetic levitation to achieve amazing frictionless movement. Liquid nitrogen cooled superconductors and permanent magnets combine to allow Lexus to create the impossible.”

Sadly, we don’t get to see anyone actually ride the hoverboard in the debut video, but Lexus promises we’ll see more updates from the project in the coming weeks. Watch the video below:

Champion Jet-Skier Franky Zapata Develops a Hoverboard for the Water

From the creator of the Flyboard – a jet-pack-inspired rotating platform designed specifically for the water, champion jet-skier Franky Zapata reveals the Hoverboard. Using the same technology as its predecessor, but with a single slalom water ski, the board is attached to a long hose with a single hydro-jet spewing water at a rate that will send its rider 30-feet into the air doing somersaults and flips on the way down. Priced at a whooping, yet expected $6,000 USD, check out how you could rent or even sell Zapata’s Hoverboard.

Quantom Levitation Is A Realtiy.

Few motifs of science fiction cinema have been more appealing to us than the subtle defiance of gravity offered by futuristic hovercraft. So every once in a while we check in to see how humanity is progressing on that front, and whether the promise of hoverboards will be delivered by 2015 as evidenced in Back to the Future Part 2. We’re not quite there yet, but we’re definitely getting off the ground, so to speak.  Get ready to hover your brain around the art of quantum levitation.
