The First Planet OUTSIDE Of Our Galaxy.

THIS IS NOT AN ACTUAL PHOTO OF THE PLANET!

Scientists have found signs of a planet transiting a star outside of the Milky Way, potentially representing what could be the first-ever planet to be detected in another galaxy. Researchers found evidence of a planet in the Messier 51 galaxy, located some 28 million light-years away from the Milky Way, as they detected a dip in brightness in the luminous “whirlpool” system. They used NASA’s Chandra X-ray Telescope to observe transits, which can sometimes occur when planets pass in front of stars and block out a portion of the light. The transit technique has been used by astronomers for years to aid the discovery of exoplanets and exoplanet candidates — all of which have been found in the Milky Way up until now. It’s a method that has produced successful results, though it also presents a few challenges, particularly for scientists wanting a second viewing to confirm their finding. “Unfortunately to confirm that we’re seeing a planet we would likely have to wait decades to see another transit,” said Nia Imara, who co-authored the recently published paper, presenting data that is consistent with a model of a planet candidate. “And because of the uncertainties about how long it takes to orbit, we wouldn’t know exactly when to look.” While attempts to confirm the observation may be thwarted, the study’s lead author, Rosanne Di Stefano, recognized that the potential discovery may help to broaden future studies and “open up a whole new arena for finding other worlds by searching for planet candidates at X-ray wavelengths, a strategy that makes it possible to discover them in other galaxies.”

The Walking Wheel.

Face it… everyone ages. By then, you’ll appreciate having as many alternatives as possible to get around. Designed as an introduction to assistive mobility, the walking wheel takes inspiration from the traditional walking stick without the total reliance. Designer Markus Erlando Gekeler certainly knows so.

The Walking Wheel can be used as a crutch for walking or leaned on for support when standing. An integrated pressure-sensitive brake gives the user grip in both modes. Because it uses the same diameter as standard bicycle wheels, it can be fitted with tires of varying tread type to accommodate different terrain types and scenarios from hiking to casual walking. Better yet, there’s nothing quite like it! So, it doesn’t have the stigma associated with old age and physical debilitation.

The New Scent Of Fresh.

The Scentee Machina gives the fragrance diffuser such a radically different avatar, it transforms what you imagine diffusers should look like. Designed as a product that makes your environment smell beautiful, the Scentee Machina even looks beautiful in a way that draws you towards it. It harnesses an aesthetic that’s reminiscent of the Nixie Tube, and brings that visual language to the fragrance diffuser, a product that hasn’t seen much change in 500 years of existing (aside from going electric).

The Scentee Machina asks the question, is the diffuser’s sole purpose just emitting fragrance? Or can a beautiful aroma just be a part of a beautiful experience… created by a product that’s beautiful too? The Scentee Machina is a flat plate that lets you dock a clear fragrance tube into it (it really does look as pretty as a nixie tube), and comes in a Uno and Quattro variants letting you dock single or multiple fragrances.

Controlled via a smartphone app, you can choose which fragrance you want to be diffused, and at what time. The Scentee’s fragrance list is quite inclusive, and far from traditional, allowing you to scent up your room with anything from Sandalwood, to Vanilla, even to Buttered Toast! The app learns from your choices and begins deploying fragrances based on your moods at the time of the day.

Changing a fragrance tube is as simple as unplugging a tube and replacing it with a new one. Magnetic connectors let tubes snap to the base, and when in use, a warm light glows from the tube’s bottom, providing a visual cue while also letting you see the liquid level descend eventually in all its beauty.

What the Scentee Machina does is it abstracts the diffuser, not assigning to it the conventional urn/vase/mountain shape we’ve seen all along. It creates an aesthetic that feels familiar, but not familiar to fragrance diffusers… Which is what’s truly innovative, and goshdarnit beautiful. Not to mention if you could get my room to smell like Chocolate or Buttered Toast, why wouldn’t you?

Vertical Vinyl.

Introducing “o-ton”, a vertical, wireless turntable which lets you import and digitally enhance your vinyl records. It’s almost entirely translucent, so you can see all the inner workings and, of course, your vinyl’s unique cover art. The design features a digital stylus that automatically turns your device on if you insert a vinyl. With an integrated optical sensor, the stylus can identify and jump individual tracks. Simply plug it in, pair your device, insert a vinyl, select your speaker and dance.

A Look Back At A 3D Printed Limb.

3d-printed-exo-prosthetic-leg-designboom023d-printed-exo-prosthetic-leg-designboom04

This may not be people’s first time seeing this 3D printed exo-prosthetic leg.  But it sure is remarkable enough to take a look back at.  The ‘exo-prosthetic leg’ was created by Adam Root, this 3D printed artificial limb uses modern technologies to fabricate its customizable, intimate, form-taking design to fit the leg. Developed to resolve the time intensive, costly and tedious current process of adapting a prosthesis to an amputee’s specific anatomy, this design enhances a combination of a 3D scanner, printer and modeling software in order to create a more precise and affordable manufacturing procedure.

3d-printed-exo-prosthetic-leg-designboom03

Scanning technologies such as an inverted laser, form a highly precise virtual model of the patient’s residual limb and matches its anatomy to within a fraction of a millimeter. This, as well as the MIT biomechatronics lab developed fitsocket that captures leg tissue properties to enable a better fit, is then ready for 3D software modeling. All this information is combined in a custom-patterned mesh model and is hollowed out into an exo-skeleton, to reduce weight. By fusing together titanium dust particles in a laser sintering process, an extremely durable, lightweight and biocompatible prosthetic limb.

Ty Dolla Sign ft. Future – Campaign (Official Video).

screen-shot-2016-11-10-at-12-47-32-am

In the wake of last nights election, Ty Dolla Sign, and Future have released the video for their hit “Campaign”.  Weather you’re happy or deathly distraught about the results, everyone loves to see a good ol’ fashion booty jiggle.  Check the method.

The Purple Reign Of Future.

Earlier this year, Future hit 22 cities in 32 days on his Purple Reign tour, and MTV were along for the ride. In this new documentary, Future’s Reign, we get a closer look at Hendrix’s tour stop in Dallas, where he prayed, performed and made it rain at the strip club.  The Atlanta rapper also sat down for an honest (no pun intended) conversation about his early days hustling, dealing with loneliness and unhappiness when he moved to L.A., missing his Aunts funeral due to rap commitments and the realities of juggling a busy music career with fatherhood. Hit singles and platinum plaques aside, Future’s biggest concern is staying true to himself.

“The best thing I can do is be myself,” he said. “If people try to tell you to change and do something else and try new things that you not comfortable with — basically sell your soul — you’re going to wake up and look in the mirror and you gon’ feel like you don’t know this person.”

What Is ‘The William’?

the-william-stove-3

The William is an innovative stove top concept that utilizes the full surface area potential for cooking. It also ditches knobs and dials for touch screen control. Even though items placed on the surface of The William don’t automatically heat up. They are automatically recognized, but only when the user is ready to cook and activates the surface by tapping the control panel. Then, when a signature is recognized, the user has to manually raise the temperature in order for the signature to receive any heat.  That all may seem a bit complicated, until you check out the video below.

A Round Table Discussion ALL Producers Should Watch…

Over the years, RBMA has brought together artists for joint lectures on the couch. For their Festival New York in 2016, it was the turn of three beatmakers from hip hop’s biggest hit-making city of recent vintage: Atlanta. ATL favorite sons Metro Boomin, Sonny Digital and Zaytoven appeared at Red Bull Studios New York, discussing their early influences and breakout hits, the rise of trap and the producer drop, and their approach to sampling and collaboration. Their hits include work for Future, Drake, Migos, iLoveMakonnen and many, many more.

“Dras”tic Cell Phone Changes May Be In Our Future.

drasphone_1 drasphone_5

The Drasphone tries to combine two undeniably massive trends in cellular phone design. The clamshell trend of the 90s, and the present touchscreen display trend. Pioneering flexible display technology, this conceptual smartphone bends at not one, not two, but at three points. This allows you to make the Drasphone compact in two ways. Do a half fold, and you have a Squarish MiniDras, or a complete fold, and you get a MicroDras.

drasphone_7 drasphone_6 drasphone_2

If you haven’t noticed, a small section of the display is exposed when in MicroDras mode. This nifty feature allows you to have all your notifications and relevant data visible to you even when your phone is in sleep mode.  Now while I strongly believe that large moving parts in a smartphone can result in major wear and tear (remember how easy it was to snap a clamshell phone?), I’d love to see a working prototype before I can make any promises.

Watch What You Eat.

process book studio3 final priny process book studio3 final priny process book studio3 final priny

Google’s made some really nifty advances. Google whatever you’re eating and you’ll get a rough calorie count of your meal. However, you can’t rely completely on Google’s algorithm. Some people use too much butter or fat, some people cut down on unnecessary carbs. Google doesn’t account for that. What you then need is the Telo wristband.

process book studio3 final priny process book studio3 final priny process book studio3 final priny

Armed with state of the art tech, this little bad boy makes use of a sensor on your wrist to assimilate your food and give you a fairly accurate estimate of how many calories it contains. That aside, it also warns you of any ingredients that may be allergenic. The Telo also comes with its companion app that completes the user experience/interaction circle. Loaded with features, it allows you to get the most out of Telo, and yourself too.

process book studio3 final priny telo_watch_6 process book studio3 final priny

While some may say that an entire wristband may be a little too clunky for them and that a calorie counting app and a fitness wearable work just fine, I say this isn’t for the nonchalant-hearted. The Telo is a core-fitness device, almost crossing into the medical category. Given that, the Telo is a necessity and therefore having it on your wrist sounds absolutely plausible.

telo_watch_4 telo_watch_3 process book studio3 final priny

The Telo is ideal for people with blood sugar/cholesterol issues, heart risks, obesity problems, or mild to serious food allergy issues. That aside, if you want to get serious about watching what you eat, watch it with this ‘watch’.

The New Future Of Gaming?

carbon_04 carbon_03

This new console concept designed by Peter Difrancesco, titled Carbon, addresses the direct correlation between people playing video games isolated in their bedroom and an increase in the number of people suffering from social anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses. In essence, it makes it easier for people to “go” to their friends houses to play… without actually having to go anywhere.

carbon_01

It works as a cloud streaming service that allows the controller to be the portal to access your games at home, connect to a screen and interact with friends using physical connections such as heart rate monitors and cameras within the device. Simply bring a controller to your friends house and then connect to any app-capable device, or non-app device using the HDMI dongle. This reduces the number of items you need to bring to play with friends and improves game play over portable gaming devices on the market by working on a streaming based system.

carbon_02

The built in heart rate monitors in the controller provide optional feedback through your friends controller so they can sense your fear, excitement, or anger when they have just beaten you. It also tracks your face whilst playing and then allows you to pop up on their screen with a short message as and when you choose using the camera button on the front of the controller.

Solar-Powered Ecocapsule Allows You to Live Off the Grid Anywhere in the World

Slovakia’s  Architects recently revealed several exciting details about the Ecocapsule that will give you the opportunity to live anywhere in the world. Ecocapsule is a micro-shelter that operates off-grid by using sustainable technology such as solar power, rainwater collection and filtration, and wind power. In addition to this environmentally friendly aspect, the structure allows for worldwide flexibility and portability, since it can be easily transported and used as an independent research station, a tourist lodge, an emergency house, or even as a humanitarian-action unit.

Despite measuring only 14.6 feet in length, 7.9 feet in width, and 8.2 feet in height, the Ecocapsule can comfortably fit two adults and provide the same luxuries as a hotel room. A built-in kitchenette, running water, a flushing toilet, and a hot shower are now comforts that can be taken into the wilderness. For those that want to use this egg-shaped structure for scientific research, there is plenty of storage space for equipment and any necessary technology. When transporting this capsule, no special preparations are needed, since it can be shipped, airlifted, or even pulled by an animal.

On May 28th, the Ecocapsule will be unveiled at the Pioneers Festival in Vienna and more details will be released then. By the end of this year, this innovative structure will be made available for purchase.

DJs! How About ‘Netflix’ for your favorite Vinyl Records?

mag-10Collector-t_CA0-superJumbo

Digital music sales have taken a dive, and meanwhile, vinyl is in the midst of a huge swell that probably won’t let up anytime soon. So what has 2015′s vinyl surge wrought? VYNL, or Netflix for records.

The service is pretty straightforward, although rather than picking particular albums you want to rent, a la Netflix, you select from VNYL’s categories—which are called #vibes. This is where it goes slightly adrift, but we’ll focus on the service because it’s a cool idea. Say you want #work or #danceparty or #betweenthesheets. You pick one of those and each month you get a pack of LPs to play. You can keep what you want for as low as 12 bucks a record, and send back what you’re not feeling at the end of the month.

It’s worth noting, though, that there are other similar services cropping up, such as Vinyl Me, Please, which costs $23-$27 a month. We haven’t tried either service, but the idea behind them seems like a good way to bulk up on vinyl if you’re just getting started And it’s a good thing to get into—probably the most worthwhile way to own music in a world of immediate but downgraded music downloads.

Based on the desires of intelligent humanoid robots, bulgarian artist Simeon Georgiev has taken NIKE‘s air max 1 and roshe run silhouettes and adapted them for the future. Both sneakers have been reworked to maintain their distinct lines and elements, evoking an additional sense of rigidity. The overall aesthetics boast clean and refined color panels, with lacing systems claimed to be more advanced than NIKE’s marty mcfly’s ‘back to the future concept shoes.

Philips is envisioning a future where city dwellers become freelance beekeepers with the Urban Beehive, a concept device that is at once scary, awesome, and honey-filled. The pod-like hive attaches to a hole cut into a pane of glass. On the side facing outdoors, there’s just a small entryway for bees to come buzzing in. On the other side is the brown protective bubble.

James Spader Cast as Lead Villain Ultron in ‘Avengers’ Sequel

1c162764-8066-452c-bf00-b3e7f0c1ea2a_Ultron_JamesSpader

Good news for James Spader – the quirky character actor is coming back in a big way as one of Marvel’s ultimate villains. Spader has just landed the title role in “The Avengers 2: The Age of Ultron,” the upcoming sequel to 2012’s record-setting superhero jamboree. Ultron is an evil robot that can travel through time and uses his talents to change the present so he can have the upper hand in the future. But, departing from the comic, writer-director Joss Whedon plans to strip some of Ultron’s powers for the upcoming film. “I knew right away what I wanted to do with him,” Whedon recently told Entertainment Weekly. “He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, godd— it, he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic.” Spader’s Ultron will be making trouble for Marvel’s costumed heroes in the movie, including Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, and Thor. However, since Ultron is entirely mechanical, it remains to be seen if Spader will be on set in a suit, interacting with his fellow cast members, or if he’ll be providing the voice for a CGI creation. So far, Marvel and Disney haven’t weighed in on the matter. Whedon first revealed that Ultron would be the main villain in the “Avengers” sequel during his appearance at San Diego Comic-Con in July. And that Spader will be playing a less powerful Ultron, this should give fans plenty of room to speculate on how the writer-director will approach the character, given Spader’s ability to play bad guys who are at once charming and a little creepy.
