Most Rappers Are Lying About Their Money

From expensive clothes to gaudy chains and customized rides, wealth has always been a major talking point in the hip-hop community – especially in rap lyrics. As Jay-Z chides on Magna Carta… Holy Grail‘s “Versus” track, “The truth in my verses versus your metaphors about what your net worth is.” Thus, Businessweek recently launched an inside look into hip-hop’s dubious tales of extraordinary wealth. The results confirm Hov’s skepticism of rap’s tried-and-true rags-to-riches narrative – one in which Jay has taken part in the truest sense while others’ claims to a cache of prosperity are, in truth, mostly unrealized. Here, Businessweek hilariously ousts some of the industry’s worst offenders – and most “humble” lyricists – with a telling “Actual Wealth vs. Alleged Wealth” comparison.

R.I.P. Chris Lighty.

Chris Lighty was one of Hip-Hop’s most successful executives, helping/managing the careers of numerous artists such as 50 Cent, Diddy, Busta Rhymes, Mariah Carey, Q-Tip, Missy Elliott, Mýa, Diggy Simmons, Cormega, Ja Rule, Mobb Deep, LL Cool J, Nas, and more. Violator Management founder Chris Lighty has passed away in his Bronx Apartment, according to numerous confirmed reports. The cause of death appears to be suicide. A gun was recovered next to his body. His last tweets from 2 days ago are troubling: He retweeted the following: ‘Life is about perspective. It’s not what you see, but how you see it. What you see is what you get.’

The 64th Cannes Film Festival took place a few weeks ago, and was a celebration of film, arts and glamour; A slick mixture of old Hollywood, Red-carpet premieres, and the quintessential yacht party.  Diddy a regular to cannes, a gentleman of exquisite means and the international archetype of the soirée;  Reminds us all in this short film, that while many other rappers have come and gone..  “Diddy was here first”

DJ Khaled’s Birthday At Mansion In Miami.

The pic above of DJ Khaled rocking his old Terror Squad chain of yesteryear, but since his old days of T.S. he’s moved on to bigger and better things.  A new label (Young Money), a new boss, (Lil Wayne), and a new crew (YMCMB), but most importantly, a new year brings new challenges, and at his birthday party at Mansion in Miami, his old friends came by wish the big man luck on his new endeavors.  Check the video below.

Jay-Z Tops Another Forbes List.

Jay-Z tops this year’s Forbes Hip-Hop cash Kings list with $37 million this past year, a little but more than Diddy ($35 million).  ‘Hip-hop’s reigning Cash King continues to reap the benefits of a 10-year $150 million Live Nation deal, as well as stakes in the New Jersey Nets, the 40/40 Club chain, ad firm Translation and others. This year marked the first time he out-earned wife Beyonce since their marriage in 2008. Lil Niqo’s BMF Freestyle.

Child exploitation is always something I’ve been apposed to.  It takes a person time and experience to be good at what they do.  Although it takes 1,000 hours to be an expert at your craft, some people seem to skip ahead.  One of my best friends showed me a video the other day of a rapper named Lil Niqo.  I was shocked to find out that the “Lil” in Lil Nio was nothing short of the understatement of the year.  None the less, the people behind him have put a lot of effort into presenting him to the world.  Check out his BMF freestyle, and feel free to share your opinion of it.

Throwback Video: Busta Rhymes – Break Yo Neck.

Click the pic to watch the video.

When it comes to classic hip hop videos, Busta Rhyme’s “Break Yo Neck” stands out as one of my all time favorites. From the spontaneous dancing red men, Busta humping a steam-roller cruising down the street, to the uber-random headbutt-battle in the middle of the video, “Break Yo Neck” was one of the greatest of its time.  The video featuring appearances from Spliff Starr, Cee Lo Green, Diddy, Timbaland, Lil Jon, Ludacris, Dr. Dre and a small hand full of others, (unfortunately the d*cks over at SME won’t let me put the video on this page) so click the pic above to check out the 2001 video for “Break Yo Neck”.

Diddy Speaks on Lil Kim & Nicki Minaj.

So its a pretty widely known fact that Ms. Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim are engaged in a lyrical tiff. In her most recent release on the matter, Lil Kim may have had a line about feelings on Diddy. Diddy has been working with Minaj which some say is a reason for Kim to be upset. Diddy got on Hot 97 recently to discuss his feelings on the matter with Funk Master Flex, and had some relatively calm and insightful advice on the matter. Check the method below.

Golden Monopoly.

A Monopoly board game made out of solid gold and encrusted with jewels is currently on display at The Museum of American Finance in New York City, and NO, Diddy doesn’t own it… yet.  The gold-bound game was created by jeweler Sidney Mobell, who started in 1988 and worked every day for a year on creating the Monopoly game.  The board is made in 23 carat gold plate, and all the little houses and hotels are 18 carat solid gold. On the chimneys of houses are genuine rubies, on the chimneys of the hotels are genuine sapphires.  A glittering topaz marks the light bulb on the “Electric Company” space, and a ruby drips from the faucet on “Water Works.”  “If you take a look the dice are 18 carat solid gold and there are diamonds embedded in each one of the numbers. The little thimble, the race car, all the little tokens are 18 carat solid gold,” said Mobell.  It is believed to be the most expensive Monopoly game on the planet. Mobell said the game has an estimated value of $2 million, but added the precious game is priceless.  In 2003, Mobell donated the game to the Smithsonian, which is affiliated with the Museum of American Finance.  “Monopoly is a very symbolic game in America,” said David Cowen, president of the Museum of American Finance, on Friday morning.  “It was popularized during difficult financial times in the 1930s. As the nation again faces difficult economic times, I’m happy to have the item here.”  The gold and gemstone monopoly set will be on display at the Museum of American Finance until October 2012.  All in all, just seeing this game on display reminds me of my favorite commercial on TV now-a-days…
