See The Next Progression In Future Phones.

Just like televisions and computer monitors, handset displays are about to get a huge resolution boost.  According to the latest forecast from ABI Research, a 4K screen will become a flagship smartphone feature within the next 12 months and within five years, 478 million smartphones a year will ship with a UHD display as standard. However, at the moment there is very little native 4K broadcast content available for either TV or smartphones, meaning that, for the time being, a display with a super resolution could be seen as just a marketing gimmick.

Although UHD displays aren’t expected to arrive until next year, the ability to use a smartphone to create 4K content is already here.  The latest Samsung and LG flagship handsets both record video in 4K and as such join a growing list of UHD devices, such as the GoPro action cam.  However, even with more user-generated UHD content, disseminating it among friends or even hosting it to sites like YouTube is still an issue in terms of streaming or downloading due to the size of the file involved and consumers’ hatred of videos that buffer.  “Over The Top (OTT) video services will carefully weigh the costs of 4K delivery, the impact on viewing on mobile devices, and the brand halo high resolution services can bring,” said practice director Sam Rosen.

Rosen believes companies that use the internet to deliver content will initially focus on bringing UHD to televisions but there are emerging connection technologies that could mean that smartphones become a hub for streaming rich content to other devices around the home.
“New connections like wired MHL 3.0 and wireless 802.11ad can help position mobile devices as a hub for streaming high quality video and gaming to TVs.  Qualcomm’s acquisition of Wilocity and push of 802.11ad could further encourage OTT companies and TV manufacturers to embrace the technology and bring high resolution video to TVs via mobile devices,” he adds.

Smarty Ring

Smarty-Ring-5

Smart watches have been all the rage on the tech scene, but we’ve yet to see a smart ring. Well that’s exactly what Smarty Ring is, and seeing that they just surpassed their goal on IndieGoGo, this concept may soon become a reality. Rather than having to pull out your phone a hundred times a day to check for updates on Facebook, you can now get all of your text, chat, and social network notifications sent right to your fingers. Utilizing Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology, this smart ring will work on both iOS and Android powered devices (with an interactive app built for both), and also lets users manage their calls from their fingers as well. You can do everything from accepting/rejecting incoming calls to speed dial and emergency calls. There’s even a built-in butt call alert for those accidental dials. The Smarty Ring also comes with a built-in clock that displays five different time zones, and even includes a stop watch as well for training in the gym. The ring itself is crafted from allergy free surgical stainless steel, uses LED lights for the display, and includes a wireless charger.

Tesla’s Are Going Android.

Tesla is often seen as the Apple of car makers so Elon Musk’s decision to update the current flagship Model S with a Google Chrome web browser and Android emulating OS could surprise some.  The company’s CEO made the announcement at a special Tesla event in Munich, Germany this week, but pointed out that the changes will not happen overnight.  So, from late next year Tesla customers will be able to access the internet in-car via Google’s Chrome, and the informatics platform will be fully Android-compatible — it currently runs a version of Linux that can support modified Android and iOS apps — meaning that it will be easy for developers to write Tesla-specific apps or to port existing Android apps to run on the car’s software systems.

As well as being the pure electric vehicle with the longest range on a single battery charge currently in production, the Tesla Model S also has the largest touchscreen interface of any road car.  The 17-inch system not only offers an online connection and access to the vehicle’s navigation system, but also replaces many of the analogue switches and dials — for features such as air conditioning — that litter most vehicle cabins.  However creating something that takes full advantage of a display more than twice the size of the average tablet could take some doing on the part of Android app developers — Apple CEO Tim Cook has described most tablet apps on Google Play as simply stretched smartphone apps.

Nintendo Gameboy Converted to Android Gamepad

Use-Nintendo-Gameboy-as-Android-Gamepad-1

Once Nintendo Gameboy was the most favorite gaming consol. Now again you can revive those memories. A geek at Instructables has hijacked the Dot Matrix Gameboy and gutted it to take advantage of an Android Gamepad. The smart-jacking procedure involves a Wii Controller IME and a faulty Dot Matrix Gameboy that has no use nowdays. The Gameboy, after the successful alteration into Gamepad, works for any application or game that involves Android keyboard input and needs only a Bluetooth connection to get connected with android tablet/phone. Currently, it’s only been tested on Galaxy Nexus and as a SNES emulator but may work for any Android based tablet or phone, as said by its creator.

Apple vs. Samsung

Apple just threw a tantrum because they were ordered to tell Samsung a bunch of secrets that could potentially help Samsung keep their products on the shelves.  On Thursday, a judge ordered Apple to hand over information about their patent deal with HTC to Samsung. Samsung wants to see the patent agreement between HTC and Apple because it could potentially help their defense in Apple’s crusade to get most of Samsung’s biggest products taken off store shelves. The Verge’s Bryan Bishop explained it best:

If so, the company argues, Apple’s request that infringing Samsung products be removed from the market falls apart, because Apple was happy to “forego exclusivity in exchange for money” — and in this instance, Apple is already receiving money in the form of a hefty $1.049 billion verdict.

So, most likely in response to that judge’s ruling, Apple added a bunch of new products to the never-ending list of Samsung things they want taken off store shelves for infringing on their patents. The new list includes the following:

  • Samsung’s Galaxy S III running the latest Android software (which recently passed the iPhone in global dominance)
  • Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2
  • Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 8.9 Wifi
  • Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 10.1
  • Samsung’s Rugby Pro
  • Samsung’s Galaxy S III Mini

This is just another chapter in the totally mature, totally civil legal battle between the two companies. It will get uglier before it’s resolved, we can promise you that.

The DJ Storm iPhone A.P.P.

Technology is the wave that’s sweeping up and coming artists into the spotlight now a days.  I remember just a few years ago, Soulja Boy was a shining light among fledgling rappers for being signed off YouTube hits.  But now a days, promoters, radio stations, magazines, label execs, and even DJ’s take a look at someone’s web stats when considering doing work with an artist.  The web and all the devices interconnected to it are now the way to spread music through the world, and the creative force Adam Patton over at ‘Down With A.P.P.‘ is well aware of this.  Luckily for me, Mr. Patton, one of the most talented people in digital media had the DJ Storm brand in mind when conceptualizing a creative iPhone application.  Everything in the photos is purely at a concept stage, but you can read more at the BeHance.net page.

What Your Technology May Say About You.

Very recently my assistant’s cell phone bit the dust as suddenly as Steve Jobs, and we were searching frantically for a replacement.  Obviously the ability to call someone is no longer the determining factor when picking out cell phones or more importantly, smart phones.  The topic of smartphone operating systems can be as divisive as politics or the Mac vs. PC debate. (Just add snide comments about dropped calls.)  I delved into some research data to figure out what I could learn not just about the services themselves, but about Android vs. iPhone users.  Luckily for me, some friends at Column Five Media performed some of their infographic magic on the resulting data and the findings were pretty interesting. And people, please don’t forget that these are the statistics summed up by the info collected.  This doesn’t mean that because you own an iPhone your a woman.  Its just an average of all the data.  (If everything is blurry, click the pic to make it larger.)

The Video-Game T-Shirt.

The tech company Zappar has teamed up with Hybrid Apparel to launch a range of T-shirts that feature augmented-reality technology.  The tees, which go on sale in December, coincide with an app that brings the graphics to life when viewed on an Apple or Android smartphone or tablet device. As you can see in the video, a viewer can even play a video game on a friend’s T-shirt, through their tablet.

Tough to wrap your head around? Check out the video, which actually makes the whole concept appear pretty cool. I wonder: Will people actually get on board with augmented-reality clothing? Who knows; it could be the next big thing in fashion.

Road SMS.

Keeping an eye on the road ahead may be difficult at times.  The one time I know it’s always hard to keep focused on the road is when I’m getting head while driving, other that, texting and walking takes the cake.  Now people would assume it should be fairly easy to walk and type, bu they all think that until they walk face first into another person.  The Android and the iPhone each have apps now that make it possible to safely text while walking. The built-in cameras project an image of what’s in front of you and set it as the background while you’re texting.  What a useful invention.

The New Age Flip-Phone.

Flip phones were ultra hot at the end of the 90′s and early 2000′s. As long as you weren’t a stuffy “business” person who owned a Blackberry or Palm, you probably had a flip phone. Then, Apple’s iPhone came and changed the world of cell phones completely.  Smart phones took over and the flip phone died.  It’s back. Kind of.  With 3 flexible touchscreens, a triangular design, and custom Android interface, this creative and functional design gives us a glimpse of how smart phones might be flipped themselves.  Check the method.
