‘Unbounded’… Who Thought Scaffolding Could Be This Cool?

Ben Butler is fascinated by the complex structures that emerge from simple and delicate processes. This phenomenon can be found in the elaborate systems produced by ant colonies to human cities, small quotidian actions accumulating into overpowering structures. Unbounded, Butler’s installation on display at Rice University Gallery in Houston, Texas, uses this same idea by assembling over 10,000 pieces of poplar wood into a matrix-like structure. This massive arrangement coalesces into an unexpectedly mesmerizing array of grids that stretch to fill the gallery space. Butler approached this installation, as he commonly does within his practice, without initial sketches or ideas of what he would like the structure to look like. He played with the materials, discovering configurations on the spot.

Although the grids within Unbounded were pre-made in his studio, the way they were configured and connected horizontally was all in response to the space. This way of acting in the present ensured that the structure’s outcome would be organic, and not purely responding to a preconceived shape.  Poplar wood was chosen for the installation because of its malleability and abundance, which gave Butler the ability to fiddle with a material that seemed endless. This idea of endlessness also tied into the title he chose for the piece. Butler wanted the piece to have no defined boundary or vantage point, but encourage the audience to walk around and within the structure, discovering it from all angles.

The DJ’s From Mars Are Back At It Again.

djs_from_mars_wallpaper_by_gamineoratoune-d5n8q99

Classically known as ones who call out the cheesy commercialism aspects of commercial EDM in a clever way, the DJs From Mars have returned to expand upon their previous skewering of popular sounds in the mainstream in their video “Phat Ass Drop pt 2.” Released this Thursday, two years after the first installment of the video which “instructed” young producers how to make a typical Top 10 Beatport track, Part 2 covers several types of “trends” that have recently taken the scene by storm.

The video begins by instructing aspiring producers to head to Beatport.com and look up the most popular new sound, which they point out as deep house. After quickly throwing in some generic deep house samples into the foundation of the track, the DJs cite articles from blogs (Dancing Astronaut makes an appearance) saying that deep house is dead, so they turn the track into future house to keep up with what’s cool. Not too long after skewering future house, they then target unoriginal tropical house samples and call it “boring.”

However, the DJs From Mars still haven’t forgotten about big room house as the most copied type of EDM. First, a quick homage is done to Melbourne bounce as the subgenre with light big room overtones that led to popular, yet simple tracks like “Selfie.” But upon instructing producers to view tracklists of the worlds “biggest” DJs like Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Tiesto, and “Chuck Norris,” DJs From Mars eventually conclude that the most surefire way to create a hit is by making a big room track.

Sydney Australia Is Gettin All GeeDup.

Fashion changes drastically from place to place, and touring Australia for a few weeks made me want to look into whats hot in the Land Down under.  The most striking brand I came across was Geedup, an Australian clothing company, started by two brothers. Their style is extremely reminiscent of the Cali streetwear scene, the selection of pieces is wide enough that I could wear a full outfit from them everyday for two weeks and still not have run through them all.  Check the method below.

Established in the summer of 2010, the group of young entrepreneur’s that founded Geedup set up shop in Darlinghurst, and Parramatta, Australia.  I hope at some point they get a location in the States, however, you don’t have to fly to Australia to get your hands on their gear.  Their online shop has a great selection as well as accessories, which you can view by clicking any of the photos in the post, or right here.  I’m making it a priority to grab a few pieces before I head out.

The Final Trailer For The Entourage Movie Is Here.

entourage-1280jpg-884802_1280w

Warner Brothers just released a new trailer for the cinematic adaptation of the hit HBO series “Entourage.” In what looks like an extremely fun, extended episode of the show, Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) and the boys continue to navigate the choppy waters of Hollywood as Vincent Chase (Adrien Grenier) declares he wants to become a director.  But enough about the plot! The trailer features plenty of bikini-clad ladies, super-cars and yachts — all of which will undoubtedly lure the show’s faithful fanbase into theaters.  The movie also promises myriad celebrity cameos. Some standouts include Warren Buffett and Ronda Rousey, but there are literally too many to name here.

A Brilliant Recap Of 2014… In Rap.

skillzIt’s the 3rd day of 2015, and some people are still stuck in last year.  But Skillz has given folks a way to look back at 2014 in his now traditional “Wrap Up”.  Starting in 2002, and “ending” in 2012, a 1 year hiatus was enough, and Skillz is back with his legendary track, summarizing the previous year. Other artists have attempted to do their own “rap ups”, but Skillz is still the most thorough, funny, and all encompassing version.  Check the method below.

Ferrari Reveals Its 458 Speciale A.

ferrari-458-speciale-a-front

The convertible version of Ferrari’s hardcore 458 Speciale has been revealed, and it’s called the 458 Speciale A (A as in Aperta).  The car will be the most powerful road-going Spider in its illustrious history and will be getting the same engine as the hardtop Speciale.  So that means a naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V8 with 597bhp spinning the rear wheels via a seven-speed twin-clutch semi-automatic gearbox.  That means a 0-100km/h time of 3 seconds, a 0-200km/h time of 9.5 seconds and a top speed that will be north of 200mph (321km/h). And all without a turbo or supercharger helping out.

Its folding metal roof can be dropped almost as quickly (14 sec) and is unique to this model. The standard 458 Italia Spider has a fabric soft top.  However one thing the standard convertible boasts that this doesn’t is an exposed engine bay. This car’s rear has been redesigned to accommodate the folding aluminum mechanism but it still looks just as dramatic.  Inside the cabin will get exclusive carbon fiber trim and other details to mark it out from other 458 cars, and there will also be a prominently placed plaque that lists the number of awards that the 458′s engine has scooped during its lifetime.  Just 499 examples of the limited-edition Ferrari will be produced.  The Speciale A will be in France to kick off the Paris Motor Show, which commences October 4th.

The Dreamiest Corvette Of Them All.

Corvette-Z06-Stingray-600x400 Chevrolet-Corvette-Z06-interior-600x342

GM’s flagship supercar, the first headline unveiling of this year’s Detroit Motor show, potentially has enough in the tank to challenge anything from Ferrari or Lamborghini.  The Z06 may look a lot like the standard Stingray, which itself was officially unveiled at the 2013 event, but it is extremely different where it counts most, under the hood.  The extra power is thanks to a lightweight but potent supercharger that forces the car’s 6.2-liter V8 to pump out over 625hp. Making sure that the car doesn’t disintegrate under that extra performance are aluminum cylinder heads and titanium intake valves. Chevrolet has even taken a leaf out of its European competitors’ books and reexamined the engine’s weight, rods and pistons.

Corvette-Z06-600x400Making sure that power doesn’t disappear in an automatic gearbox’s torque converter, the Z06 will be coming with a seven-speed manual transmission as standard. However, for those that like the full track-day effect, an eight-speed paddle shift unit will also be an optional extra.  But maybe the best thing is that because the new car is so rigid, the roof panel can still be removed for open air motoring without turning the car into the automotive equivalent of jelly. However, Chevrolet points out that there will still be a slight difference in handling when the panel is out.  Potential owners will be happy to hear that the extra rigidity and performance has been paired with bigger brakes and with Chevrolet’s Magnetic Selective Ride Control dampers (an option on the standard Stingray) which will be fitted as standard on the Z06 when it appears in dealerships in 2015.

For anyone who remembers “Save the cheerleader, save the world.” we all have a new surprise to look forward to.  Heroes will be back in 2015 as a 13 episode event titled ‘Heroes: Reborn’.  There’s no word as to who (if anyone) from the original cast will be returning, but I’m sure with the massive fanbase the show had, that news will spread quickly when it’s released.

The McFly’s Are Back… And With POWER LACES.

Back-To-The-Future-2-Future-NIKE-2015-1

Back in 2011, Nike revealed a limited run of Back to the Future Part II-inspired sneakers. The edition, set at 1500 pairs, replicated the future 2015 Nike MAGs worn by Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly in the 1989 film, although lacked the movie’s “power laces” function. The whole lot went directly on eBay as part of a charity effort on the part of the Michael J. Fox Foundation.  Today, Nike designer Tinker Hatfield has revealed to Sole Collector that the company is getting ready to take another look at Marty’s shoes and will release functioning power laces next year.  “Are we gonna see power laces in 2015?” were Hatfield’s exact words. “To that, I say YES!”  Of course, there’s no word yet of how limited a production run Nike might target this time around nor is there any confirmation that the laces will appear on another replica of those specific shoes. That being said, Back to the Future fans may very soon have a chance to own the pair of shoes they’ve been dreaming about for 25 years.

Starwood Hotels Keyless Check-In

The new feature, called a keyless key, would enable its Starwood Preferred Guest members to go straight to their rooms and open the door via their smartphone, rather than having to go through the process of checking in. It will be trialed at the Aloft Harlem New York and Aloft Silicon Valley California hotels and builds on Starwood’s existing Smart Check In service. With the Keyless Key all that a guest will need is an Android smartphone running version 4.3 or newer or an iPhone 4S or newer. The locking mechanism works via Bluetooth so as long as the app is running, the door will automatically unlock or lock. If the trial is successful, Starwood plans to roll the feature out to all of its W and Aloft hotels, globally by the end of 2015.

After BMW recently debuted their BMW M4 coupe, it only seems fitting that their Japanese rival would release its class contending model. Equipped with a 5.0 liter V8 engine, the exact power output is still unknown at this point, but there are some things we do know. A 8-speed paddle shift automatic transmission sends roughly 500 horsepower (some early reports say 460 hp) to the wheels, which should provide an impressive 0-60 mph time.

Batman Vs. Superman Filming

batman_vs_superman

At East Los Angeles College during halftime of their home football game. Weingart Stadium was turned into the Gotham City University home stadium for a game against their rival, Metropolis State University. It started with Warner Bros. telling the crowd that they were going to be in Batman vs. Superman. Yes, a Warner Bros. representative referred to the movie as Batman vs. Superman. That’s still not the official title, but it’s one that keeps coming up. Warner Bros. also announced that this would be the opening of the movie. Then two scenes were filmed. Both plays were from around Gotham city’s 30 yard line. The first play was a tackle for a Metropolis loss. The second was for a touchdown pass to the corner of the end zone for Metropolis. Then the bench cleared for Gotham and they had to break up a fight on the field. Gotham never even went on offense.

“Day 1 of filming for 2015’s “Batman Vs. Superman”. The scene takes place at Gotham City University’s Stadium facing off against rivals Metropolis University. Everyone in the audience was given various Gotham Football shirts. Some black, some yellow, some T Shirts, some sweatshirts, etc. Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300, Man of Steel) was on set, however the main characters were not there.”

How To Make A Lambo.

Kyrgyz-Lamborghini

Not sure what to do with your old Volvo? New Format, a design studio in the Kyrgyz Republic, has an interesting solution.  With a 1982 Volvo as the base, wheels from a BMW X5, spare parts and scrap metal from the junkyard, plenty of imagination, and three months of perseverance, the agency has succeeded in creating a rather convincing knock-off of the Lamborghini Gallardo, a car usually priced at €300,000.  But the “Kyrgyz Lamborghini” seems to be just the beginning. Meder Koilubaev, artistic director at New Format, has expressed his ambition to launch a new concept of custom one-of-a-kind cars made from spare parts in true Kyrgyz style.

At the Marvel Studios panel in Hall H for this years ComicCon San Diego, writer/director Joss Whedon took to the stage to announce that the official title for the sequel to The Avengers will be Avengers: Age of Ultron.  Whedon also revealed a brief logo teaser for the film.  Age Of Ultron features favorites from the first “Avengers” film and new Marvel characters never before seen on the big screen.  Avengers: Age of Ultron is slated to begin production in March 2014 and open in theaters on May 1, 2015.

Batman/Superman Movie Confirmed.

SUPERMAN-AND-BATMAN-dc-comics-33738718-1920-1080

I was so tuckered from E3 that wasn’t personally able to make it to Comic-Con San Diego this year, but I was still keeping an ear to the ground for big news, and I found it via SuperHeroHype.com.

On the heels of the worldwide success of “Man of Steel,” director Zack Snyder is bringing together the two greatest Super Heroes of all time—Batman and Superman—for the first time on the big screen. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
The current hit, “Man of Steel,” has taken in more than $630 million at the worldwide box office to date, and climbing. Along with its star, Henry Cavill, the upcoming film brings back Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. The new Batman has yet to be cast.
Snyder is co-writing the story with David S. Goyer, who will then pen the screenplay. Production is expected to begin in 2014, with an anticipated release date in Summer 2015.
Silverman stated, “Zack Snyder is an incredibly talented filmmaker, but beyond that, he’s a fan first and he utterly gets this genre. We could not think of anyone better suited to the task of bringing these iconic Super Heroes to the screen in his own way.” Kroll added, “We are thrilled to be back in business with Zack and his team on this next movie. The success of ‘Man of Steel’ is a wonderful testament to the love and support that both fans and new audiences, worldwide, have for these characters. We are very excited to see what Zack has in store for all of us.”
Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment, noted, “Superman and Batman together on the big screen is a dream come true for DC fans everywhere. All of us at DC Entertainment could not be more excited for Zack’s continuing vision for the DC Universe.”
Zack Snyder, who made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con today, breaking the news to audiences there, later said, “I’m so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can’t wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter. Let’s face it, it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest Super Heroes in the world.”
The new film brings back Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder as producers. This time, Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are serving as executive producers, along with Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan.
Thomas offered, “Whilst our ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy is complete, we have every confidence that Zack’s fresh interpretation will take the character in a new and exciting direction. His vision for Superman opened the door to a whole new universe and we can’t wait to see what Zack does with these characters.”
The film is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, and Batman characters created by Bob Kane, published by DC Entertainment.

The Finding Nemo Sequel.

FindingDoryLogoTemp_small-610x342

During a work trip to Florida, I got to stay in house with a movie theater in it, and out of all the movies I chose to watch during my stay, ‘Finding Nemo’ was one of the first on the list.  Who knew that only two weeks after, Disney and Pixar would announce that the film is getting a sequel.  Finding Dory will arrive in US cinemas on November 25th, 2015, and (as you may have guessed) will follow the adventures of Dory, the helpful if somewhat absent-minded Blue Tang from the original movie.

Dory-FindingNemo3D-610x381

The film will take place roughly a year after the events of the first film. Many favourites will return, including Marlin, Nemo and the Tank Gang, among others. Other details are scarce right now, but the film will take place partly along the California coastline.

Ellen DeGeneres seems pretty ecstatic about reprising her role as a forgetful fish. “I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time,” said DeGeneres. “I’m not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating ‘Toy Story 16.’ But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It’s got a lot of heart, it’s really funny, and the best part is—it’s got a lot more Dory.”

Andrew Stanton

And the director of Finding Nemo, Andrew Stanton, will also be returning to oversee the sequel. “There is no Dory without Ellen,” he said. “She won the hearts of moviegoers all over the world—not to mention our team here at Pixar. One thing we couldn’t stop thinking about was why she was all alone in the ocean on the day she met Marlin. In ‘Finding Dory,’ she will be reunited with her loved ones, learning a few things about the meaning of family along the way.”

Disney to Acquire Lucasfilm

Disney announced Tuesday that it is acquiring Lucasfilm LTD, including the Star Wars franchise, for $4.05 billion in stock and cash. In a press release announcing the acquisition, Disney announced that Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for a release date in 2015 and that “more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.” On a conference call, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that in addition to Episode 7, episodes 8 and 9 are also in the works. The goal, Iger said, was to “release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.” This is Disney’s third major brand and studio acquisition in the last ten years. In 2006, the company acquired Pixar for $7.4 billion. In 2009, Disney acquired Marvel for $4 billion. Lucasfilm co-chairman Kathleen Kennedy will become president of Lucasfilm under Disney and serve as Star Wars brand manager. George Lucas will serve as a creative consultant. The other subsdiaries of Lucasfilm, LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic and SKywalker Sound are also moving to Disney. The plan is to keep all Lucasfilm employees at its current San Francisco headquarters. What do you think of this merger between two of the biggest entertainment brands in the world?

Marvel Studios At Comic Con.

ComicCon was in full effect over the last week, and of course, Marvel Studios blew it out of the water.  Guardians of the Galaxy, coming August 1, 2014 is one of their newest projects along with, test footage displayed for the very first time for Ant-Man, to be directed by Edgar Wright.  With the announcement came the reveal of the first concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy by Charlie Wen, as well as logos for both films.  In addition, Marvel Studios announced the official titles to the Thor and Captain America sequels: Thor: The Dark World, in theaters November 8, 2013, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, in theaters April 4, 2014.  Check out the all logos, plus the just-released Iron Man 3 logo, below, and also check out the just-launched official Iron Man 3 site by clicking here.
