So Japan Has Cyborgs Now?

Kunihiko Miyahara loved to surf. His wife, Kaori, points out photos of her husband catching waves as her fingers wander through an album filled with images of the couples’ history.  The Miyaharas met as actors. They played a couple on stage, and although Kunihiko admits that he loved Kaori first, they’ve been happily married for 20 years. Together, they’ve been through thick and thin, good times and bad.  Arguably the worst was when Kunihiko was hit by a motorcycle while riding his bicycle in Tokyo, Japan. In an instant, Kunihiko’s surfing dreams were crushed along with his spine.

“The doctor told me I would never walk again,” said Kunihiko.  New technological advances in robotics, however, are giving people the ability to overcome some of their physical limitations.  “When I was nine years old, I read the book I, Robot,” said Dr. Yoshiyuki Sankai, a professor, roboticist and founder of robot maker CYBERDYNE. Isaac Asimov’s work of science fiction, which outlined his Three Laws of Robotics, inspired Sankai in his childhood, and the first – to protect humans – informed his work in developing the Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) exoskeleton.

As a cyborg-type robot – a fusion of human, robot and information systems — the robot suit HAL, which looks a little like legs of a Stormtrooper, detects signals from the wearer’s nervous system. The wearer of the suit is tasked with re-training his brain to communicate with his body.  Sankai states that HAL can improve damaged physical functionality.

HAL follows a series of steps: The brain transmits nerve signals to the muscles it wants to move; the skin propagates those impulses as bioelectric signals, which are picked up by HAL, and HAL computes the required movement and level of power exertion accordingly. With the movement occurring in real time, the brain can receive sensory nerve signals from the muscles and joints, and this allows the wearer to improve their impaired functionality.

“After therapy with the robot suit, I can stand. I can walk. I can use my arms,” Kunihiko said. “My body is changing.” Kaori said a year ago her husband couldn’t do anything. Today he’s a different man.  Dr. Sankai said this is part of what makes the robot suit so special.  “By using HAL, people’s mindset and emotions change,” he said. “It motivates people to have hope.”  HAL is designed to augment human capability, said Paul Tapp, director of technology for Intel. And to do so requires robust processing capabilities.

“Within the HAL robot exoskeleton, there’s an embedded Intel Atom processor,” he said. “That’s really the central processing unit for all of the different sensors and microcontrollers that are taking nerve signals from the human body and interpreting them and feeding back that data.”  The suit’s movement sensors track the patient’s mobility in three dimensions, which helps transmit information about how the patient’s body can and cannot move. Tapp said the data is crunched through a series of complex algorithms that helps physicians determine exactly what kind of enhanced therapy is required.

Tapp said the robot technology is the futurist fodder used in old movies.  “If you look at the future of an augmented human, you only need to turn to science fiction in the past 30 years,” he said. “The sort of capabilities that inspire kids, teenagers, even adults today, this is really the beginning of it.”  For Kunihiko Miyahara, HAL has helped him believe again in his body. “One day,” he said, “I want to go to the ocean and ride a wave again.”

The newest release from DevGotCharacter feels like the perfect track to listen to at 10pm, driving through downtown with the top down, on your way to pick up your significant other.  The song Summertime, featuring a classic sounding hook, and quite the impressive verses from JShades, is only the first release from Dev’s mixtape “Words With Friends”.  The Chromatix produced beat makes the perfect home for Dev’s complex and concise flow.  If ‘Summertime’ is the first of the tracks off “Words With Friends”, we can expect great things from the full tape.  Check the method below.

The Purple Reign Of Future.

Earlier this year, Future hit 22 cities in 32 days on his Purple Reign tour, and MTV were along for the ride. In this new documentary, Future’s Reign, we get a closer look at Hendrix’s tour stop in Dallas, where he prayed, performed and made it rain at the strip club.  The Atlanta rapper also sat down for an honest (no pun intended) conversation about his early days hustling, dealing with loneliness and unhappiness when he moved to L.A., missing his Aunts funeral due to rap commitments and the realities of juggling a busy music career with fatherhood. Hit singles and platinum plaques aside, Future’s biggest concern is staying true to himself.

“The best thing I can do is be myself,” he said. “If people try to tell you to change and do something else and try new things that you not comfortable with — basically sell your soul — you’re going to wake up and look in the mirror and you gon’ feel like you don’t know this person.”

Here’s Your First Look At Darth Vader In ‘Rouge One’.

Screen Shot 2016-08-12 at 12.16.28 AM

Spoiler alert, the back of his head looks exactly the same. So that’s not the most exciting part of the brand new ‘Rouge One’ trailer released tonight.  Arguably one of the most exciting things to happen during the 2016 Olympics so far, the Star Wars: Rouge One trailer features the cast from the previous teaser, along with new looks at a robot cross between C.3PO and Spock.  We get some looks at some brand new worlds, and the ‘U Wing’.  The over all look is reminiscent of ‘The Force Awakens’ and the best parts of the original trilogy, along with the thing that will make Star Wars fans go insane… The back of Vader’s head.  Check the method.

Take The First Look At Luke Cage.

luke-cage-head

The trailer below may not necessarily be the FIRST look at the mighty Luke Cage, seeing as we got watch him tear things up in Netflix’s Jessica Jones.  There was also a brief teaser of him tearing through a gang of thugs from Comic-Con 2016, which was amazing. This however is the first look at our hero, the story we’ll be getting in the series, and the world he’s be fighting through. So get your first expansive look into the new Luke Cage series.

What Is ‘The William’?

the-william-stove-3

The William is an innovative stove top concept that utilizes the full surface area potential for cooking. It also ditches knobs and dials for touch screen control. Even though items placed on the surface of The William don’t automatically heat up. They are automatically recognized, but only when the user is ready to cook and activates the surface by tapping the control panel. Then, when a signature is recognized, the user has to manually raise the temperature in order for the signature to receive any heat.  That all may seem a bit complicated, until you check out the video below.

Sausage Party: Spoiler Free Review.

maxresdefault-8

When a film titled ‘Sausage Party’ was announced last year, many a good folk on the internet thought it was a joke.  Not only just the name, but the simple premise of an animated film that was NOT for children at all, was something that hadn’t particularly been conceived of before. As the green-band, and red-band trailers began to surface, the hype grew in circles of youth who enjoyed films like ‘Superbad’ and ‘Neighbors’, and upon it’s release it will definitely satisfy those audiences.  Once again, this is not a film for children… or grandparents.

That being said, the niche of crass, inappropriate joke loving, 20-to-30-something’s that are excited for this film will not be disappointed.  The film is far, far, far more intense than even the red-band trailers would suggest.  This movie, as a comedy is unique because the characters themselves are in most cases “the joke”.  You can’t know or show anything about the primary antagonist in the film, because it would take away from some of the best jokes in the movie. So the trailers leave out quite a bit, which is a relief.
Sausage-Party-Official-Red-Band-Trailer-3
The things that can be said however, may seem negative, but the audience this movie is directed at, will not mind at all.  ‘Sausage Party’ is wonderfully, beautifully, hilariously, and horribly racist, sexist, and any other “ist” you can shake a sausage at.  Arabic, Jewish, Black, White, LGBT, Nazi, drug addict, and Native American jokes are only the tip of the iceberg.  I sat down with a fellow press writer, and we discovered that the ONLY people who were left out of the food fight of controversial jokes, were Russians and Buddhists, this film should have been NC-17, not R rated. Aside from that, there isn’t a classification of individuals who doesn’t get a stereotypical joke thrown at them… even the people from the great state of New Jersey get their dose of put downs.
sausage-party-trailer
However, the brunt of the film focuses on religion in a way that’s eloquently woven into the plot.  The film’s protagonists start off viewing humans as gods (and even open the film with quite the interesting song about it).  And throughout the movie, the message of “Don’t worship everything you hear about” is reoccurs often.  The one thing that is also impressively touched upon, is “If peoples views don’t align with yours, you should respect that, and not harbor hatred towards them”, which I personally feel is quite the positive message.
maxresdefault-9
In terms of negative points, the film struggles with being dated easily, from the music, to the popular cultural references, to some of the language. In 5 years it will be easy to see how much this movie has aged.  Many of the best jokes are for shock factor, meaning after you see it once, there may be little see as humorous on a second watch.  There is also one particular scene towards the end of the film, where it felt like Seth Rogan and the writers, just decided to throw everything at the wall at once to see how many people they could make uncomfortable.  It literally had people asking “what the hell am I watching?”, which is not exactly the response you want from trying to push the envelope. (Believe me, you will know that scene when you see it)

1401x788-SAUSAGE-PARTY02

‘Sausage Party’ on the whole is quite the unique and original movie, which is extremely refreshing.  With nods to films like ‘Saving Private Ryan’, ‘Terminator 2’, ‘The Matrix’, and ‘Stargate’, there are no ends to jokes that (the age range this movie is aimed at) will appreciate.  From the surprises, to the genuinely broad sense of humor, this movie is worth checking out if you have a strong stomach, and have enjoyed the trailers.

This Is Your Life On Drugs.

London-based photographer Roman Sakovich gives us a glimpse of the drastic visual differences that substance abuse can cause in his series titled Half. By splitting his subjects’ style choices and physical appearances straight down the middle of their portraits, the photographer presents a before and after composite image that shows us two timelines—one of the addict (on the right) and one of the non-user who still has the choice to change his or her fate.

1082108926 1082108901

While you might think that a great deal of Photoshop was used to produce each image, Sakovich says that most of the effects were created in-camera. The transformations were accomplished with skilled costuming and makeup design rather than post splicing and merging. The result is an eye-opening look at the damaging effects of drug abuse, especially meth addiction which is known to have a considerable amount of impact on one’s physical appearance. While the photographer admits it is a stereotypical and perhaps superficial look at substance abuse, it is, nonetheless, effective.

G-Eazy ft. Jeremih – Saw It Coming (Official Video).

G-Eazy_Bobby_Bruderle_Facing_Jacket_G-BG-Fix_2

Jeremih and G-Eazy have teamed up for the sultry “Saw It Coming.” The song will appear on the soundtrack for the Ghostbusters reboot, which already hit theaters July 15th.  Max Martin co-wrote the track, which features G-Eazy rhyming on the verses while Jeremih delivers the chorus. Because of a lyrical reference to the original Ghostbusters theme song “Tell me who you gonna call?/ I bet you never saw it coming” Ray Parker Jr. also gets a writing credit on the single.  Check the official video below.

When it comes to Italian/Australian tri-lingual, bi-sexual models, who go out of their way to stand for something positive, Stefania Ferrario is on the top of my list.  The stunningly beautiful model caught our attention during her #DropThePlus campaign, which she used make people more aware of the fact that the modeling term “Plus Sized” can be extremely damaging to minds of young girls.  Stefania also shaved her head in 2012 to prove that bald is beautiful and to raise funds and awareness for cancer, alopecia and trichitillomania (an OCD disorder that leads to suffers pulling out their own lashes, eyebrows and head hair).  She feels as though in society today there is far too much emphasis placed on hair, and that girls should not feel any less feminine or attractive for being bald or having extremely short hair for it can be just as sexy. And when you want hair you can easily have fun playing with wigs?  Be it short hair, or long, we appreciate both Stefania’s work, and the positivity her work stands for.  Check her out.

Simin Qiu, And His Swirly Sinks.

11

So the term “Swirly Sink” may be a bit of an over simplification… but Simin Qiu, a design student at London’s Royal College of Art, invented a luxurious-looking Swirl Faucet that will save water by turning it into a magnificent, gorgeous, swirling spiral.  The faucet works by transferring the water through a double turbine, which spirals as water moves through it, forming an elaborate and delicate lattice of water streams. The turbine also limits the flow of water by 15%, meaning that you waste less when using it. Three different nozzles let users choose which water-saving design they’d rather use.
