Reflected Sunsets Through Shattered Mirrors

https://i0.wp.com/interrete.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/sunsets-through-shattered-mirrors-bing-wright.jpeg
New York-based photographer Bing Wright has created a stunning series of images that capture the reflections of beautiful sunsets in broken mirrors.

The method behind his Broken Mirror/Evening Sky series is brilliant in its simplicity. The black lines in the shattered mirrors distort the sunset while retaining all of its splendorous color, making them seem like stained glass windows from a cathedral built by an alien race. According to Bing, the images were created in his studio by projecting his sunset photos at broken mirrors that were angled towards the projection. That way, when he captured the shot, it made it look like he had snapped the photograph through broken glass.
Apparently Wright isn’t aware of the whole bad luck aspect of breaking mirrors, because he broke “a lot” in order to get 16 break patterns good enough to use for the final images. Here are the remaining images from the collection:

Foods In All Their Colors.

kitchen-5 kitchen-4

Photographer and food enthusiast Brittany Wright sets up intricate culinary still lifes that focus primarily on the differentiation of fruits’ and vegetables’ coloration. Wright captures a rainbow of colors in foods ranging from heaps of apples to carrots plucked freshly from the earth. Each photograph focuses on the produce against a stark white background, a way to display the food’s vibrant shades without distraction.

Wright_06 kitchen-2 kitchen-3

The Seattle-based photographer is fascinated by capturing the aging process of vegetable and fruits, displaying the variety of forms each piece takes during ripening and decay. Wright even includes fruit harvested from her own backyard, photographing raspberries both plump and shriveled.  Wright’s client list is diverse, including brands Dry Soda and Samsung as well as (appropriately) several farms. You can see more colorful gradients and food-based imagery on Wright’s Instagram.

The brand new Star Wars is being released TONIGHT. Recently, a mixtape created by Richie Branson and Solar Slim merges music from the sci-fi series with some of The Notorious B.I.G.’s most popular tracks. John Williams’ orchestrations are interwoven with Biggie’s raps and are laced with some punchy boom bap and 808 drums.  Check out ‘Life After Death Star’.

The Toyota FT-1 concept is a pure performance, track-focused sports car model created by CALTY Design Research, Toyota’s North American Design branch.  The FT-1 concept is a symbol that captures elements of the emotion and energy we can expect to see in future Toyota vehicles designs.  Its design is heavily influenced by Toyota’s long sports car tradition that includes vehicles such as 2000GT, Celica, Supra & most recently, FT-86.

The news about Toyota and BMW building cars together isn’t new, as the two companies finalized the partnership in January of 2013, but thanks to the Nikkei Asian Review, we’ve got some rumors as to what the two companies have been working on. Those plans revolve around the next-generation BMW Z4 and a revival of the famed Toyota Supra… aka the Toyota FT1.

‘Concussion’: Spoiler Free Review.

concussion_ver2

Will Smith will always be known as an acting juggernaut, more than capable of bringing in a crowd regardless of the film.  Some of his ventures have been hit or miss (Winter’s Tale, Jersey Girl, Legend of Bagger Vance) but over all, he’s capable of playing incredibly memorable, and powerful characters, and ‘Concussion’ continues that tradition.  Dr. Bennet Omalu discovered a connection between football injuries and brain damage in the early 2000’s, and was met with an incredible amount of resistance by both scientists and the NLF.  From the opening scene of the film when Bennet Omalu lists off his academic accolades, the entire movie theater was impressed.  And Will Smith does a great job filling the shoes of a brilliant doctor.

The most notable factor about the character of Dr. Omalu is his Nigerian accent.  Accents haven’t been Will Smith’s strongest suit (After Earth for example), but even though his accent in ‘Concussion’ does waver in and out, it’s not enough to take you out of the film… (like in After Earth).  Oddly enough the accents are one of the only weak points of the film.  Alec Baldwin’s Dr. Julian Bailes has an odd wavering southern accent at certain parts of his sentences, and the rest seems like regular Baldwin.  This however is NOT to discredit his incredible acting in the film.  After 30 Rock, Baldwin can be hard to take seriously because of the show playing his dry, straight faced humor as his strongest card.  ‘Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation’ is filled with seriously played lines from Baldwin that the audience took as a joke because it sounded like a 30 Rock line.  ‘Concussion’ however jumps this hurdle, and Baldwin’s character Bailes comes across as a deeply conflicted, emotionally dignified character who belongs on screen next to Smith.

1280x720-MNS

Gugu Mbatha-Raw (who was amazing in Under The Lights) plays Prema Mutiso, Omalu’s room mate/love interest.  To her credit, she does very well with what she’s given, her acting is superb, and every motivational speech, or heart breaking moment she goes through feels real, and substantial.  That being said, Prema is a nurse dating a doctor, and didn’t seem to lend much help to the medical plot points of the film.  At certain points in the movie it was almost as if she was there simply to have things explained to her, so that the audience would understand.  Case in point: when Will Smith demonstrates a brain in a skull by showing her a peach in a jar half filled with water, and shakes it around.  (She’s a nurse, I’m fairly certain she knows how a concussion works.)

maxresdefault

As for the film itself, there are a few more humorous moments than one would expect from a film with such serious subject matter.  There are many deliberately awkward moments between Omalu and any of the other characters that serve as good humor, and the film balances this well with darker moments that even drew a few gasps from the crowd.  ‘Concussion’ has a unique way of making its point using real NLF footage.  Even from the opening monologue from “Iron Mike Webster” (played brilliantly by David Morse) the movie intercuts with highlight reels, and gives the film a much more visceral feel.  There are even moments of police footage that are used to astonishing effect.  Smith’s character even uses dialog to illustrate his point in graphic manor, describing men “being hit in the head with sledge hammers” or “pouring wet concrete down a sink” relative to choking a brain.

The overall writing in the film is also superb, and doesn’t seek to demonize the NLF, but simply demonstrate that certain individuals within its ranks would do whatever it took to keep the league unshakeable.  There are lines like “You’re going to war with a corporation that owns a day of the WEEK… The same one that the Church used to own.” that demonstrate the gravity of Omalu’s plight.  Omalu even has a few very stirring lines of his own, including the now famous trailer scene “When I was a boy, Heaven was here, and America was here [just below]” (which I’ve read was an actual quote from the real Dr. Omalu).

will-smith-concussion

All in all, the film comes from a great true story about helping people, and not being afraid to speak the truth.  The conclusion of the film may not be as satisfying as some movie-goers may want, however, it’s the way things work when it comes to real life.  ‘Concussion is very well written, and treats its characters like real people.  There is no general antagonist just counting money in the NLF offices doing evil things to keep people down, every character seems conflicted in their motivations, and has reason for feelings the way they feel.  The doctors, and scientists especially, rely on facts and evidence before making decisions, and sometimes even state that although they may dislike Omalu, and his reasoning, or his motivations, they cannot deny the scientific evidence… which is the way REAL scientists behave.

oscar-bait-new-concussion-trailer-breakdown-alec-baldwin-also-stars-700381

The emotional moments in the film (especially a break down, beautifully acted by Will Smith) all have weight, and resonate with the audience.  Some cast members shine brighter than others however. On the high scale, David Morse as Mike Webster was shockingly strong, and on the other hand Luke Wilson as the NLF commissioner was barely even in the film.  ANY person with hair could have played that role.  There are one or two scenes that may not fit into the film, like an awkward club scene that was just there to give Nina Sky some more royalties, but as a whole, ‘Concussion’ delivers as a heartwarming story of a person who will not stand for letting the truth be unheard.  I definitely recommend it this christmas.

First Look At Will Smith In The Independence Day Sequel.

vAcuW1N

Well, there it is.  Your first look.  For those who don’t know, Will Smith’s Col. Hiller won’t be returning for the sequel to 1996’s ‘Independence Day’.  Rumor has it that two different scripts were penned, one if Smith returned, and one if he chose not to, so we can obviously see which one they chose.  The official “report” from the viral site The War Of 1996 – United We Stand, reads as below.

While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller’s valor in the War of 96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.

TMNT: Out Of The Shadows vs. X-Men: Apocalypse Trailers.

tmntoots029 tmntoots006 tmntoots001

The Turtles have been popping back up in popularity since the 2000’s, and aside from new video games, and comic crossovers, their movies are extremely well known.  (Well known and well liked are two different things), but weather you knew it or not, the Leo, Mikey, Don, and Raph were destined for a comeback. The stakes seem quite a bit higher, as New York appears to be invaded by someone (#BringDatKrang) and there’s also the arrival of Casey Jones.  It may be quite early to tell, but this will probably be a much better film than the original.

X-Men Apocalypse (oddly enough) was announced before its predecessor (X-Men: Days Of Future Past) was even released.  That being the case, the hype surrounding this film has been palpable, and now we know it’s for good reason.  The (young) X-Men squaring off with the most feared advisory in their universe seems like a good idea on paper, but seeing some of it come to life is downright exciting.  Check the method below.

Batman vs. The Ninja Turtles?

bmtmnt_cv1_ds_mtv_1449253978_161777

As a child growing up in the 90’s one of my favorite cartoons/franchises/collection action figures sets/anything in the world was the ninja turtles.  Those toys and cartoons dominated the landscape in the way Jordan’s dominate urban footwear, and the Turtles still have massive nostalgic value to this day.  On the other hand, since the 90’s and the original Michael Keaton Batman film and all the subsequent films, books, and events, people all over the world have grown to become fans of the Dark Knight in droves.  Because the Turtles are technically a Mirage property, and Batman stays squarely in the clutches of DC, this crossover is one people many people never saw coming (much like the protagonists in its’ pages).  Check the synopsis below, and look out for the books in stores and online as soon as December 9th.

DC Comics and IDW team up for the crossover you never saw coming as two of the greatest entertainment icons meet for the first time. In Gotham City, a series of deadly raids leads Batman to believe he’s up against a group of highly trained ninjas known as the Foot Clan. Somehow, they’ve crossed over to another dimension and are determined to take advantage of the situation while looking to get back home. But they haven’t come alone: Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo are hot on their trail. Get ready for excitement as heroes and villains from both worlds clash and team up in an epic battle that threatens the very fabric of reality.

A Good Look At The Kitchen Of The Future.

cut_02 cut_03 cut_04 cut_05 cut_06

Why should a kitchen be a permanent fixture? The Cut kitchen reimagines this hub of the home as a sculptural piece with personality – a place to both entertain and adapt to the needs of its users. The basis of the kitchen is a 3D figure that’s been cut in two pieces. The two parts then rotate and fix into position to present configuration choice to suit the aesthetic of the space and user needs. A line cuts through the top block creating the slot for a table surface.

cut_01

The table can slide horizontally and rotate. The user can ultimately decide the final configuration of their kitchen. Additionally, the ceiling space becomes completely functional. A sequence of rhythmic profiles with inset LEDs create a changing configuration of elegant hanging space and incorporating units that gently slide down from the framework for use as both display and storage. Reminiscent of dancing piano keys, the ceiling system accentuates its ability to play different tunes depending on use, mood and audience.

Who’s Your Daddy? (Apparently It’s PSY).

South Korean pop star and viral video sensation Psy is at it again. The singer has debuted a brand new video that rivals his breakthrough hit “Gangnam Style” and features Psy showing off some crazy new dance moves.  After Psy rose to stardom in 2012 on the basis of the music video for his song “Gangnam Style,” which featured his wackily corny dance moves and quickly climbed the charts to become the most-watched YouTube video ever (surpassing 2.5 billion views worldwide.)  With his new release “Daddy” the wait has begun to see just how impressive Psy’s numbers will be.  Check the method.

In 2014, Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant contacted conceptual design studio Lernert & Sander to create a piece for a special documentary photography issue about food. Lernert & Sander responded with this somewhat miraculous photo of 98 unprocessed foods cut into extremely precise 2.5cm cubes aligned on a staggered grid. Looking at the shot it seems practically impossible, but the studio confirms it is indeed the real thing. The photo is available as a limited edition print of 50 copies printed on 40 x 50cm baryta paper signed by the artists for about €500.

Check The E-Chopper…

ono_2 ono_1

The first in bicycle maker Ono’s collection of outrageously stylish e-bikes is the wild-looking Archont. The design is a three meter long easy rider, conceived with the sole purpose of providing an exhilarating experience and unparalleled riding pleasure. It’s a chopper-style super e-bike. Just as quick as it looks, it features face-lifting acceleration thanks to a 7kW motor powered by a 72V 20Ah lithium ferro-phosphate or 74V 23Ah lithium-ion unit. First and foremost though, the sleek design was developed to turn heads with its unconventional lean body, curved lines and carefully worked proportions.

ono_3 ono_6

In terms of its electric drive, Archont electro comes with a 7 kW motor (more and less powerful units are available), a 4 speed plus reverse manual “gearbox”, and Schlumpf transmission, which allows pedal action even when hurtling for the top speed of 50 mph (80 km/h). Mostly though, should you ever afford it, you’ll want to drive it on right-handlebar throttle that will unleash jaw dropping acceleration. Features such as cruise control (tempomat) and a speed limit are also included. Archont electro is powered by a 72V 20Ah lithium ferro-phosphate or 74V 23Ah lithium-ion unit, stored inside a locked carbon fiber casing (metal and polyester are also an option). Ono Bikes Company estimates that the battery can provide range of up to 60 miles (100 km) without pedaling. The battery charges in about three hours when plugged in, and a regenerative braking system adds some charging while in motion.

Watch What You Eat.

process book studio3 final priny process book studio3 final priny process book studio3 final priny

Google’s made some really nifty advances. Google whatever you’re eating and you’ll get a rough calorie count of your meal. However, you can’t rely completely on Google’s algorithm. Some people use too much butter or fat, some people cut down on unnecessary carbs. Google doesn’t account for that. What you then need is the Telo wristband.

process book studio3 final priny process book studio3 final priny process book studio3 final priny

Armed with state of the art tech, this little bad boy makes use of a sensor on your wrist to assimilate your food and give you a fairly accurate estimate of how many calories it contains. That aside, it also warns you of any ingredients that may be allergenic. The Telo also comes with its companion app that completes the user experience/interaction circle. Loaded with features, it allows you to get the most out of Telo, and yourself too.

process book studio3 final priny telo_watch_6 process book studio3 final priny

While some may say that an entire wristband may be a little too clunky for them and that a calorie counting app and a fitness wearable work just fine, I say this isn’t for the nonchalant-hearted. The Telo is a core-fitness device, almost crossing into the medical category. Given that, the Telo is a necessity and therefore having it on your wrist sounds absolutely plausible.

telo_watch_4 telo_watch_3 process book studio3 final priny

The Telo is ideal for people with blood sugar/cholesterol issues, heart risks, obesity problems, or mild to serious food allergy issues. That aside, if you want to get serious about watching what you eat, watch it with this ‘watch’.

Top 10 Female Action-Movie Heroes.

Neytiri avatar

Action movies have been storming the box office since almost the beginning of cinema, and iconic characters have been born from countless movies, and subsequent franchises.  Rating the top 10 action heroes is something any movie goer could probably do off the tops of their heads, but unfortunately female heroines have fewer spots in cinema history.  This being the case, we thought we’d have a go at the top 10 (of many) female movie icons.  Our honorable mention is Neytiri of ‘Avatar’.  James Cameron’s most successful motion picture may be about the dopey human male who gets all of the native Na’Vi killed on the planet Pandora, but we all know that Neytiri is the real hero here. She’s the warrior who always stood by her principles, and as played by Zoe Saldana (with the aid of an army of animators), she embodied a unique new action hero for the modern age.  The following list is IN an order, however, if you think the order should be moved around, feel free to comment, and let us know.

S

10. Alice – Resident Evil

alice-resident-evil

Of the two female-driven, utterly superficial action movie franchises, Resident Evil has the most personality. (Sorry, Underworld fans.) Milla Jovovich has been bounding from one ridiculous, zombie-fighting, clone-army forming situation to the next over the course of this ludicrous series, and it only gets sillier – and more entertaining – with every passing sequel. She still embodies unadulterated bad-assery in every film.

S

9. Foxy Brown – Foxy Brown

foxy-brown

Foxy Brown’s boyfriend was a secret agent, but when he’s killed in the line of duty she goes on a one-woman mission of revenge against a vile syndicate, destroying sex traffickers and rescuing their victims. Pam Grier is described as “a whole lotta woman,” and the description fits. She is raw and powerful and is an exemplary vision of what strong, driven (black) female heroines can look like.

S

8. Mindy Macready – Kick Ass

kick-ass

Mindy Macready, aka “Hit Girl,” is a contradiction. She’s a pre-teen martial arts master and mass murderer of bad guys, and that’s kind of awesome, but only if you ignore the fact that her father has brainwashed her into thinking there’s nothing wrong with it. Kick-Ass doesn’t spend much time questioning her state of mind, which makes it rather a superficial film if you think about it, but Chloe Grace Moretz is undeniably fierce and formidable anyway.

S

7. Yu Shu Lien AND Jen Yu – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

yu-shu-lien-and-jen-yu-crouching-tiger-hidden-dragon

Not one but two great action heroes headline Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning kung fu epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Michelle Yeoh represents maturity and grace and Zhang Ziyi represents recklessness and passion. Their fight together is one of the kung fu highlights of the 21st Century, and the two acclaimed actresses bring their characters to vibrant life even when they’re not kicking ass.

S

6. Princess Leia – Star Wars

leia

Princess Leia might need saving in Star Wars: Episode IV, but only once, and she only gets captured because she was being a badass. They bring her to Darth Vader, the most threatening person in the galaxy, and she says “I thought I smelled something” right to his face. Then she proceeds to plan rebel warfare, infiltrate criminal underworlds, strangle Jabba the Hutt to death and take charge in an epic speeder chase. She is anything but a typical movie princess. She is a royal badass, and in the upcoming ‘Force Awakens’ rumor has it, that she’ll be “General Badass”.

S

5. Imperator Furiosa – Mad Max: Fury Road

mad-max-fury-road

Although the Mad Max film is ostensibly about a male action hero, but that gets completely stolen by his female co-star. Mad Max is pretty much just along for the ride in Fury Road, while Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa kidnaps a warlord’s sex slaves and fights off horde after horde of high-octane bastards in her quest to find freedom. Theron explodes off the screen, and so does practically everything else in George Miller’s acclaimed post-apocalyptic thriller.

S

4. The Bride – Kill Bill

kill-bill

Over the course of the two Kill Bill movies, Uma Thurman takes us on a rich and complicated journey of self-actualization, tragic love and violent vengeance. She’s a thoroughly convincing fighter who dispatches an army of masked assassins, but when the time comes to confront the man who wronged her, she can still feel recognizably human emotions. Quentin Tarantino’s films are vast in scope and intimate in nature, and Thurman gives arguably her best performance within them.

S

3. Katniss Everdeen – The Hunger Games

hunger-games

Jennifer Lawrence is building up her action movie credentials (see also: X-Men: First Class and Days of Future Past), but she will always be a legend for playing the reluctant revolutionary Katniss Everdeen in the blockbuster Hunger Games series. She’s comfortable with a bow, uncomfortable with killing, and increasingly confident leading the disenfranchised to war against an apathetic ruling class. Plus she’s a beast with the bow and arrow.

2. Ellen Ripley – Alien

ripley-aliens

It was a miracle that Ellen Ripley even survived the first Alien movie. In James Cameron’s sequel, she finally fought back, taking the fight directly to the Alien queen and setting the stage for two more sequels in which she refused to be victimized ever again. Sigourney Weaver remains one of the great action hero icons, regardless of gender.

1. Sarah Conor – Terminator 2

sarah-connor-terminator-2

Sarah Connor was running from danger throughout the first Terminator movie, and runs right into it in the blockbuster sequel to save her son from yet another killer automaton bent on bringing about the apocalypse. Linda Hamilton convincingly makes the transition from victim to hero, but James Cameron’s film wisely dedicates time to illustrating the unthinkable psychological toll the events of these movies have had on a woman who, prior to these events, as just as normal as you or I.  This is why we specified ‘Terminator 2’ because although she may be a regular 19 year old (Yeah… in the first one for some reason she’s 19 in the script), in the sequel she is a trained military machine, capable of flying off the rails to do whatever is necessary to save her son, and the future.

Charge Your Phone ANYWHERE.

As much as I’d like, Solar Power hasn’t become mainstream yet. I guess not many people have really seen how useful it can be. Apart from solar panels on your roof, no one has really explored alternative uses for these panels. Why? Because they’re bulky, expensive, and for the longest time, they were breakable. But now technology’s solved all those problems for us. The Heli-on is a testament to that.

Designed to fit into the grip of your palm, this pocket sized wonder has its own flexible solar panel rolled up cozily into a cylindrical outer casing. It also has its own inbuilt battery that allows you to charge your devices when Mr. Sun is a’hiding. Use the solar panels to directly charge your devices, or to charge the Heli-on itself. Stuck without sunlight? The Heli-on is still a good investment because it charges via USB too. Don’t ever run out of batteries on your phone because you played too much Two Dots ever again.

The Newest Addition To The Angry Birds Franchise.

hatchlings-2-800

An animated movie these days just isn’t complete without some cute baby characters, and The Angry Birds Movie is no exception. Rovio and Sony Pictures have debuted our first look at the the adorable Hatchlings as they (attempt to) sing “Deck the Halls” to get us in the Christmas spirit.  The main trio of Angry Birds will be led by Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers) as Red, a bird with a temper, with Josh Gad (Frozen) as the speedy Chuck, and Danny McBride (This is the End, “Eastbound & Down”) voicing the volatile Bomb.

Praise Be… Here Is ‘The Book Of Yeezus’. (A Bible For The Modern Day)

Praise be…

Each generation champions a superstar, so consistently relevant that they come to accompany that generation through its evolution, being a part of and ultimately shaping its identity. Such past icons have been the likes of Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, John Lennon, or Michael Jackson. For this generation, Generation Y, Kanye West is not only its greatest spectacle, but in some senses, a spiritual figure.

From the authors:

“We are here to spread a doctrine. Well, a pseudo-doctrine. We ask you to use your pulpit for Good.”

A few months ago, my brothers and I embarked on a creative journey that began with a “What If?”:

What if the Bible, the most singularly significant publication in the ancient canon of Western tradition, were updated to reflect our modern society? What would it look like? What we came up with was an interventionist art, coffee-table novelty, that will appeal to both Kanye fans everywhere and those made curious by this enormous cultural phenomenon.

At it’s simplest, it is the book of Genesis, modified to feature “Kanye” or “Yeezus” in the place of God or Y—A. “In the beginning Kanye created the heaven and the earth… And Kanye said, Let there be light: and there was light.”

In a sense, Kanye’s awesome and orchestrated spectacle is truly a religious experience. In a foreword, we explore our consumerist, quick-fix, and information-culture, and celebrate Kanye and the outsized significance he plays in our lives. All of this, bound in a black, hard-cover gold-leaf imprinted book.

This book wasn’t made to make fun at Kanye, nor to represent an undying devotion for him. Book of Yeezus is simply an exposition. It’s adding an original twist to something ancient and important in order to capture new meaning. We are trying to cast our spotlight towards the way cultural icons have come to be the contemporary spiritual figures in our information culture.

Book of Yeezus was put together by three entrepreneurial brothers with a special interest in mass-society and its effects on our worldview and imagination.
