Spectacular Genetic Mutations.

When you think of the two words “genetic abnormality” there aren’t many positive things that come to peoples minds.  Maybe The X-Men, vitiligo, or bring born with an extra finger or something is the stereotype… but while these things may happen, there are some quite eye catching, scene stealing, jaw dropping, and attention grabbing rarities that make you wish you were a little less than normal.  Check out the top bunch below… also we threw in folks with 6 fingers, and vitiligo as bonuses for good measure.  (That’d be cool to be able to count to twelve on two hands). This post might inspire you to pursue a career in genetics or to become a scientist. The world of genetics is fascinating, to say the least. It can make you feel like you’re living in a sci-fi book, instead of on Planet Earth, and there are plenty of examples that make us go, “Wow, I can’t believe this is real.”

AND OUR WINNER…

In 2002, after applying for government assistance in the state of Washington, Lydia Fairchild was told that her two children were not a genetic match with her and that therefore, biologically, she could not be their mother. Researchers later determined that the genetic mismatch was due to chimerism, a condition in which two genetically distinct cell lines are present in one body. The state accused Fairchild of fraud and filed a lawsuit against her. Following evidence from another case of chimerism documented in The New England Journal of Medicine in a woman named Karen Keegan, Fairchild was able to secure legal counsel and establish evidence of her biological maternity. A cervical swab eventually revealed Fairchild’s second distinct cell line, showing that she had not genetically matched her children because she was a chimera. Fairchild’s case was one of the first public accounts of chimerism and has been used as an example in subsequent discussions about the validity and reliability of DNA evidence in legal proceedings within the United States. Chimeras are organisms that have two different sets of DNA, or the genetic material that contains instructions for the development and functioning of an organism, present in their bodies. Most organisms only have one set of DNA, which is present and identical in every cell throughout that organism’s body.

An organism gets approximately half of its DNA from each of its parents’ gametes, or their sperm and egg cells, which carry DNA from parent to offspring. In human reproduction, one sperm typically fuses with one egg to create a fertilized egg that can develop into a fetus. However, sometimes the ovaries, which are organs in the female body that produce and store eggs, release more than one egg at a time, a phenomenon known as hyperovulation. In such cases, two different sperm can fertilize two separate eggs released during hyperovulation, creating two genetically distinct fertilized eggs that can develop into non-identical twins. However, in some cases, those two fertilized eggs may fuse together during an early stage of development, resulting in a chimera made of two genetically distinct cell lines. As a consequence, instead of having cells with identical DNA throughout their body, a chimera has different DNA present in different parts of their body so that the DNA in their blood, for example, may not be the same as the DNA in their saliva. “I have two sets of DNA, two sets of blood and immune cells. The two colors of skin pigmentation on my torso is from my and my twin’s two different genetic makeups. My particular case of Chimerism is linked to autoimmune disease. I went undiagnosed for more than half my life due to the rarity of my condition. I’m now an advocate for Chimerism, it’s link to autoimmune disease and body positivity. My hope is to prevent others from going undiagnosed how I did.”

X-Men: Dark Pheonix, The First Trailer…

“I’ve seen evil, and I’m looking at it now.”  It’s been a long time coming, but the official trailer for Dark Phoenix, the next (and potentially final chapter in Fox’s long-running X-Men saga), is finally here.  Just like his predecessor in the pre-DOFP timeline, it appears that Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) has made the same grave mistake while handling a young Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) as he seemingly opted to once again suppress her dormant Phoenix abilities instead of helping teach her how to control the über-powerful force. Also, while the trailer may be light on actual Dark Phoenix action, save for a quick shot near the end, there’s still plenty of intense footage of all of your favorite returning X-Men as they band together to face arguably their most dangerous – and most personal – threat yet.

If Marvel Comic Heroes Were Rappers (Vol. 1).

Marvel Comics, has been knocking pretty much anything they do out of the park over recent years, be it movies, comic re-telling, and now marketing.  It would be a bit difficult to conceive of Marvel heroes crossing into the rap game, but Axel Alonso, editor in chief of Marvel, and his team of artists conceived of variant covers in order to generate buzz for over fifty No.1 issues that Marvel started releasing last month.  These cover take popular and iconic hip hop covers, and give them a Marvel twist.  Check the method, and NOTE: The collection is so vast, we had to split this up into two posts.

TMNT: Out Of The Shadows vs. X-Men: Apocalypse Trailers.

tmntoots029 tmntoots006 tmntoots001

The Turtles have been popping back up in popularity since the 2000’s, and aside from new video games, and comic crossovers, their movies are extremely well known.  (Well known and well liked are two different things), but weather you knew it or not, the Leo, Mikey, Don, and Raph were destined for a comeback. The stakes seem quite a bit higher, as New York appears to be invaded by someone (#BringDatKrang) and there’s also the arrival of Casey Jones.  It may be quite early to tell, but this will probably be a much better film than the original.

X-Men Apocalypse (oddly enough) was announced before its predecessor (X-Men: Days Of Future Past) was even released.  That being the case, the hype surrounding this film has been palpable, and now we know it’s for good reason.  The (young) X-Men squaring off with the most feared advisory in their universe seems like a good idea on paper, but seeing some of it come to life is downright exciting.  Check the method below.

The Next Chapter Of The ‘X-Men’ Franchise Is Well On Its Way.

Recently, Deadline served up the new, official synopsis/spoilers for the upcoming “X-Men:Apocolypse,” and it sounds like things will get quite interesting from the jump, doing a 10 year timeline jump from Days Of Future Past. A new, very powerful enemy arrives, and more.

The official synopsis, reads like this: “Apocalypse takes place a decade after Days of Future Past and is a seamless next step in the story. The altering of time has unleashed a new and uniquely powerful enemy. Charles (James McAvoy), Erik/Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Hank/Beast (Nicholas Hoult) are joined by young Cyclops, Storm, Jean and others as the X-Men must fight their most formidable foe yet – an ancient unrelenting force determined to cause an apocalypse unlike any in human history.”

Additionally, they confirmed that director, Bryan Singer, will return to direct the flick, despite his recent legal woes. Simon Kinberg is back to write the movie, based on a storyfrom Singer, Kinberg, Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris. It’s set to hit theaters on May 27th, 2016. Stay tuned.

Super Hero Hipster Families?

Phillip Sevy, illustrator extraordinaire has created a new spin on super hero universes.  There have been different iterations of heroes and villians, with Marvel’s Zombie collection, or alternate universes in DC comics, but Sevy has put a simpler spin on things… Hipsters.  See the worlds of Batman, Spiderman, and the X-Men re-imagined through the lenses of a hipsters horn-rimmed glasses.  Looks to us like they’re all just chilling in San Francisco.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past – Final Trailer.

x_men__days_of_future_past___2014____retro_poster_by_camw1n-d7ahfne

As the release date for X-Men: Days Of Future Past draws nearer, a brand new trailer has just surfaced.  This is not to be confused with the second theatrical trailer was released, opening with a post-apocolyptic future, and rouge bands of mutants running for survival.  This new trailer seems to showcase the other side of that coin, the past.  Take a look below to see the seeds of what happens when Wolverine speaks to the young Professor X, and who helps break Magneto out of the slammer.

The Movie Trailer Line Up For Superbowl XLVIII.

SB-XLVII-Logo-Feat1.jpg.pagespeed.ce.3AJfpHOcCp

Football fans are no doubt excited for the 2014 Super Bowl, but even non-sports fans can find something to enjoy. No, we’re not talking about Bruno Mars, we’re talking about the Super Bowl movie trailers that will be airing during the commercial breaks. With the 2014 Super Bowl set to air on FOX at 6pm on February 2, we thought now would be the perfect time to run through what we know is going to debut during the big game and what surprises could still be in store.

S

hr_Transformers-_Age_of_Extinction_16

‘Transformers 4‘

Michael Bay confirmed last month that the first ‘Transformers 4′ trailer would run during the 2014 Super Bowl with another theatrical trailer arriving shortly thereafter. What can we expect to see in the big ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ reveal? Hopefully our first look at the rumored Dinobots. Bay’s ‘Transformers’ films haven’t always been the most satisfying movie experiences, but they do give good trailer. Expect the :30 ‘Transformers 4′ trailer to run during the first quarter.

S

the_amazing_spider_man_2-wide

‘Amazing Spider-Man 2‘

Also confirmed in December was that Sony had purchased a 2014 Super Bowl slot for a new ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′ trailer. Unlike ‘Transformers 4,’ we’ve already seen a handful of ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′ footage, so we don’t anticipate a major reveal, more like a solid condensing of the existing trailer. It’s possible they’ll use this spot to give more exposure to Rhino and/or Green Goblin, but a safer bet is more concentration on the Spider-Man/Electro battle that has been at the center of the marketing campaign so far.

S

robocop_2014_movie-wide

‘RoboCop‘

With Sony’s purchased time, they’d be wise to give one last push to the ‘RoboCop’ remake, which opens 10 days after the 2014 Super Bowl. The film has been tracking on the low end and a big Super Bowl trailer could give it a significant enough boost to its opening weekend numbers. It doesn’t hurt that, to date, Sony has been aggressively promoting the film during the NFL playoffs.

S

nfs

‘Need for Speed‘

While a ‘Need for Speed’ Super Bowl trailer has yet to be confirmed, there are a few signs pointing in that direction. For one, we know Disney has purchased ad time during the 2014 Super Bowl (‘Need for Speed’ is a DreamWorks film, but is being released by Walt Disney Pictures). Second, ‘Need for Speed’ opens just over a month after the Super Bowl airs and the added promotion could give it the most real impact (in terms of box-office and awareness). Finally, it just seems to fit. Universal had previously used the Super Bowl to advertise it’s flagship racing franchise, but with ‘Fast and Furious 7′ pushed to 2015, the landscape is wide open for ‘Need for Speed’ to hit that demographic.

S

DRAFT-DAY-Affiche-Kevin-Costner

‘Draft Day’

Summit Entertainment hasn’t confirmed anything, but we’d guess the NFL-approved ‘Draft Day’ (which follows the fictional events leading up to and during the NFL Draft for Cleveland Browns GM, Sonny Weaver (Kevin Costner)) is as much of a slam dunk as anything. The NFL rarely grants Hollywood the license to use its teams, logos and properties in film (‘Jerry Maguire’ is the last one we can think of), so we think it would be foolish if Summit didn’t try to capitalize on the Super Bowl to cross-promote to a football-loving audience.

S

captain_america_the_winter_soldier_artwork-1920x1200

‘Captain America 2‘

The ‘Captain America 2′ trailer (and sneak peek with ‘Thor: The Dark World’) was very well-received and we wouldn’t be surprised if Disney and Marvel opted to capitalize on that buzz in advance of the film’s April release. The Helicarrier crash is the big money shot spectacle that goes over well in Super Bowl trailers, so assuming Disney has some space, we think this is a pretty good bet as well.

S

maxresdefault-1

‘The Expendables 3‘

Lionsgate has purchased time during the 2014 Super Bowl pre-game show and the only film on their roster that would make sense to pay all that money to advertise is their big summer movie, ‘The Expendables 3.’ The early teaser for the film was very much a tease, showing us no actual footage and a 2014 Super Bowl trailer could fix that, giving audiences their first look at Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Statham alongside newcomers like Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson.

S

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past‘

20th Century Fox has made a habit out of not commenting on their Super Bowl ad buys, so at this point, we don’t even know if they have purchased a spot or what they plan to do with it. BUT…the 2014 Super Bowl airs on FOX, so why not use their own time to advertise one of their own movies. If a 20th Century Fox movie were to be promoted, it could be the upcoming ‘X-Men’ film, which promises to be one of the biggest movies of the summer. Or…

S

Dawn+of+the+Planet+of+the+Apes+Old+Caesar+light+

‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘

One could argue that ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ will be one of the biggest movies of the summer regardless of a 2014 Super Bowl trailer. If Fox wanted to promote one of its up-and-coming properties (one with considerably less star power), they could promote this summer’s ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.’ Fox has enough faith in this film to already start developing the upcoming sequel, so why not show off a variation on the teaser trailer?

S

K18.1200x712

‘Neighbors’

With ‘Fast and Furious 7′ pushed to 2015, Universal doesn’t have any obvious blockbusters in 2014 and nothing that makes perfect sense for a Super Bowl trailer. But, if they were looking to sneak in, the Seth Rogen/Zac Efron comedy could fit. It doesn’t have to be an action-packed franchise movie to win over Super Bowl audiences – just look at the rest of the commercials. The ones that traditionally get rated the highest are the funniest ones.

S

hercules.pg_

‘Hercules’

MGM has been out of the game for so long, they’re barely considered one of the big movie studios anymore, but they do have the rare big movie coming up. Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, ‘Hercules’ could be MGM’s chance to make a big splash with their only major movie of the year.

S

What You WON’T See

godzilla2014_poster2edge-of-tomorrow-cci-poster-304882980jupiter_ascending_

Warner Bros. has opted to sit out this year so one Super Bowl trailer you won’t see (which is one we were really hoping we would see) is ‘Godzilla.’ This also puts ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ and ‘Jupiter Ascending’ out as well.

The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from X-Men: First Class, in an epic battle that must change the past – to save our future.

Art Deco Super Hero Posters.

Superheroes have always been pretty damn cool. But in the 90s, thanks mainly to Joel Schumacher, they started to descend into embarrassment.  Cut to 2012 and things are rather different. With a range of acclaimed, non-garish outings, superheroes are officially “in” again… Thanks mainly to Christopher Noland.  Proof of this fact can be found right in front of your eyes. This selection of posters gives a classy art deco spin to some iconic justice-seekers. They’ve all been created by the very talented Grégoire Guillemin.

The Avengers To Battle The X-Men?

As Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk and more team up on the big screen in Marvel’s The Avengers next May, the comic book Marvel Universe is planning something just as epic. Announced today, April will see the beginning of a 12-issue superhero showdown that, thanks to studio rights issues, is even bigger than the silver screen can handle (especially since the current Avengers line-up includes Spider-Man as well). Check out the below press release for full details of Avengers vs X-Men:

This April, The Avengers and the X-Men—the two most popular franchises in comics history—go to war! Marvel is proud to announce AVENGERS VS X-MEN, a landmark 12-issue pop culture event bringing together the world’s greatest super heroes—Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Magneto and more—for an unforgettable battle beginning in April 2012.

This unprecedented assembly of acclaimed writers is joined by a trio of the industry’s superstar artists: John Romita Jr., Olivier Coipel and Adam Kubert. The Avengers and X-Men have learned that the all-powerful embodiment of both death and rebirth known as the Phoenix Force is on a crash course for Earth…and it needs a new host to unleash its immeasurable power. But what is the shocking decision tied to the Phoenix’s return that will pit the Avengers against the X-Men? And when good friends become bitter enemies, what does this mean for the future of the Marvel Universe?

Shipping twice monthly, this epic 12-issue limited series will be available in comic stores and on the Marvel Comics app on the same day—additionally, each print issue of AVENGERS VS X-MEN includes a code for a free digital copy of the issue on the Marvel Comics app at no additional cost to fans or retailers.

“AVENGERS VS X-MEN brings together the most powerful forces in comics for a super hero war like you’ve never seen before and will never see again. We all want to see the best of the best go against each other—Lakers & Celtics; Ali & Frazier; Yankees & Red Sox; and in comics it’s the Avengers fighting the X-Men, ” said Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief, Marvel Entertainment. “We’ve brought together the biggest writers, biggest artists and biggest characters for the biggest story we’ve ever told. This is the kind of high-octane action-packed story that fans demand while also having a profound effect on every character involved—and reshaping the Marvel Universe in its wake.”

X-Men First Class. New Trailer & Character Profiles.

Tons of people have been looking forward to the “second coming” of the X-Men franchise.  An all new cast, a new point in time, and no Hugh Jackman are all things the series was in need of after the 4th movie.  So needless to say folks flocked to their screens once the first trailer was released on the web, and seemed to be even more anxious for a second glimpse.  The second trailer was released a while ago, (I was just unaware of it because while sifting through hundreds of links, I only watch the first few seconds of a video, and these two trailers happen to begin pretty much exactly the same way.)  But I finally managed to put my A.D.D. on the back burner, and find the official second trailer for X-Men: First Class.  Check the method.

The studio has even gone a bit further than simple theatrical trailers, and have fashioned a few character previews for some of the movies mutant stars.  The short and intense character profiles include some lesser-known X-Men including Havok, Banshee, Mystique and Beast. The full movie will release on June 3, 2011.

The Official X-Men: First Class Trailer.

After the debacle that was X-Men: The Last Stand, Fox is trying to reboot its Marvel mutant franchise by having Bryan Singer, who directed the well-liked first two installments of the initial trilogy, to produce a prequel.  And the studio hired Matthew Vaughn, who was actually on tap to direct Last Stand before deciding against it, to direct First Class, which is not only a prequel, but a period prequel, set in the funky 1960s.  And it’s got a crop of many up-and-comers and new stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Michael Fassbender.  So is this a makeup movie that sets the ship back on course? The answer comes June 3.  Check the trailer out below and enjoy.

6. Martin

5. X-Men
