Jellyfish In SPACE.

The all-female artist collective ‘Beyond Earth’ introduces ‘Living Light’, a vibrant, jellyfish-like balloon artwork designed to be launched into earth’s stratosphere.  The craft combines biology, artificial intelligence, and aerospace technology to explore the connections between our blue planet and the boundlessness of outer space.  On June 18, 2021, the installation flew nearly 19 miles above the Earth’s surface aboard the inaugural trial flight of a shuttle called ‘Neptune One’, becoming the first large-scale artwork to fly into space.  The design by ‘Beyond Earth’ draws inspiration from the vast biodiversity of aquatic life on Earth.  “The depths of the ocean reveal an endless frontier of Earth’s biology, where many of the inhabitants create and use light in beautiful, often mesmerizing ways”.  ‘Living Light’ mimics the iridescent qualities of these marine species, illuminating its surroundings as it enters the dark abyss of space.  To realize this one-of-a-kind piece, the artists researched thousands of aquatic life forms, creating an extensive dataset of biological structures that float, move, and glow in the ocean, as if traveling in space.

The dataset was then used for machine learning to generate the inner organ designs for ‘Living Light’, a method that combines biomimicry and artificial intelligence.  In this way, hundreds of artistic images of new imaginary space organisms were formed, with ‘Living Light’ taking shape as the summation of these creatures.  On June 18, 2021, luxury spaceflight experience company Space Perspective completed the first test flight for ‘Neptune One’, a full-size capsule simulator powered by a space balloon.  The shuttle carried the ‘Living Light’ artwork to above 99% of the Earth’s atmosphere.  During the journey, the movement triggered color and light shifts within the iridescent and fluorescent materials of the piece.  The changes that occurred – both internally and externally – not only made the vessel appear lifelike, but also alluded to the transformational experiences of spaceflight.  ‘Living Light’ ventured to a new world to return transformed, offering a new perspective of Earth.  For both teams at beyond Earth and Space Perspective, this whole experience serves as a metaphor for bringing humankind to space, as well as a celebration of the dawn of commercial space travel.

The Next Generation Of Drones Are Here.

remote_underwater_vehicle_1 remote_underwater_vehicle_7 remote_underwater_vehicle_6

Designer Ron Ferencz wants you to meet the “ROV”, a new ‘Remote Operated Vehicle’. Most drones dominate the skies, but ROV’s cooler than most drones. It operates underwater. The ROV’s design is a classic blend of bio-mimicry and form-follows-function. It retains its drone-esque character while roughly emulating the way a fish moves from left to right to cut across the water. A drone would be incomplete with the visually dominant fans, and ROV has three of them towards the rear. The main fan triggers upwards and downwards movement, while the pair at the complete end are responsible for propulsion. While we’re on the subject of what drones would be incomplete without, the ROV also comes with a pretty nifty camera that allows one to not just navigate the drone, but also take some rather nifty underwater footage. Pool party or Nat Geo? Where do you see this being used the most?  Let us know.

From the creator of the Flyboard – a jet-pack-inspired rotating platform designed specifically for the water, champion jet-skier Franky Zapata reveals the Hoverboard. Using the same technology as its predecessor, but with a single slalom water ski, the board is attached to a long hose with a single hydro-jet spewing water at a rate that will send its rider 30-feet into the air doing somersaults and flips on the way down. Priced at a whooping, yet expected $6,000 USD, check out how you could rent or even sell Zapata’s Hoverboard.

Seabob Cayago Underwater Jetski

Seabob-Cayago-Underwater-Jetski-1

The Seabob Cayago F7 turns you into a much less fish-chatty Aquaman, propelling you through water at speeds up to 9 mph. You use your own weight to steer and angle the Seabob up or down, with the onboard computer display showing you your power usage, water temperature, speed, and depth. This is apparently the first jet system in the world that features an impeller; an electric-powered rotor that sucks water in and fires it out back out of the watercraft. Since no one needs a case of the bends, all underwater models from Seabob are set to a maximum depth of 2.5 meters but scuba divers can override that and set it 40 meters.

To help provide communities in need with access to safe drinking water and other basic necessities, the coca-cola company, together with DEKA R&D have launched ‘EKOCENTER’ – modularly designed kiosk, which has been transformed from a 20-foot shipping container – with the ‘slingshot’ water purification system housed within a community center. The initiative aims to improve the holistic well-being of developing communities around the world, focusing on those within the ‘bottom of the pyramid’, the largest, poorest socio-economic group – representing nearly 4 billion people who live on less than us$2 per day. EKOCENTER is a modularly designed kiosk with ‘slingshot’ technology at its core, transformed from a shipping container with solar panel awnings into a local community hub, offering clean, safe drinking water, alongside other services, such as access to wireless communication, electricity, vaccination storage, and more tailored to address community needs. The ‘slingshot’ water purification system developed in partnership with DEKA R&D – uses vapor compression distillation technology to turn any source of dirty water – river water, ocean water and even raw sewage – into safe, clean drinking water. The system delivers approximately 800 liters of clean water daily at the hourly electricity cost of less than a standard handheld hair dryer (1kwh).

Beverly Hills 9OH2O Bottled Water

9OH2OIt’s being pitched as the “champagne of water,” developed by water sommeliers to be sipped, sniffed and rolled around the mouth like a fine wine during a fancy meal. The PR pitch for Beverly Hills 90H20 borrows heavily on the wine and spirits vernacular to sell the “best tasting water in the world.” Sourced from the mountain springs of northern California, the premium water claims to be crafted with natural minerals using a “proprietary patent-pending formula” that results in a 7.5 pH alkalinity for a “silky smooth,” crisp, fresh taste profile that’s supposed to appeal to the broad consumer spectrum. It’s these unique characteristics which are likewise supposed to make Beverly Hills 90H20 the ideal water pairing for fine foods and wines, reads the sales pitch. The premium water blend is bottled in a diamond-like, hand finished decanter triple-sealed for freshness. Each of the limited-edition 10,000 bottles also features a unique custom art design and is available at fine restaurants, luxury hotels, gourmet markets and fashion boutiques.

Ice Cube Fish Tank Design by Arthur Xin

Ice-Cube-Tank-Design-by-Arthur-Xin ice_fishing_bowl

This creative Ice Cube Fish Tank is designed by Arthur Xin for Treecorona. Arthur came up with this concept of using more glass material for a thicker and more obscured form. The object is based on a cuboid shape, but takes the appearance of a drink chiller that has begun to melt down its middle. The hollow Ice Cube Fishbowl is left with an open top to provide easy access to the scaly creatures inside of it. It only looks natural with water filled up to the brim.

Pool Party

a916b68ceed0e60d456f0eb843f9f036 0f5dac676f853e4d1f77e1dfce3192fa

Pools are not exactly the most projection ready surface, and initial brainstorms produced many more challenges than this team had anticipated. In researching a solution, they had to overcome the fact that projection doesn’t work on the surface of water, it becomes distorted if you project through it, and pool parties are notorious for more standing than swimming. Most people reacted as any any normal person would, and promptly put in and order for 65,000 ping pong balls, enough to cover the entire surface of the pool. To go with their new screen, they created an application which mapped to the pool and displayed a floating river of graphics, pulled by an invisible tide. Audio reactive visuals bumped along with the various dj’s and musical acts taking place poolside. The tactile quality of swimming through ping pong balls, combined with animated colors and light created an interactive event worth telling stories about.
