Production has begun on Italian boat company jet capsule‘s latest invention, a private 5 person and nine person taxi version. After the initial concept presentation five years ago, the unusual form was finally unveiled at the 2013 monaco show, where the design team sought to create a floating transportation device that was different from all others on the market. The innovation, which is 7,5 meters long and 3,5 meters wide is a fully customizable product that allows several configurations, including one with transformable sofas, a boat taxi with large seats and a luxury version with integrated comfort features. Several other versions are currently under development for ambulance and emergency purposes. The current capsule model has a built-in hydro-jet system that can be equipped with one or two engines, but the team are also working on the first electrically powered design to be presented in june 2014. All the jets come with an international sail certification and can navigate and operate in any country/region, and waves of up to 4 meters.

Steam-O Bicycle by János Insperger

02

Steam-O by János Insperger is a modern cruiser that takes inspiration from the iconic steam locomotives of the past, applying the signature aerodynamic shape to its stark frame. In classic 1930s style, the bike sports a leather seat with spring suspension, an oversized headlight with chrome and bronze polish, and choo-choo style rims. The main feature, however, is a pushrod drivetrain like that of locomotives from the time. This unique power system and distinct attention to detail set it apart from other cruisers new and old. Pedaling torque is transmitted by bearing on shaft and coupling rods. Coupling rods move in a vertical motion as well as horizontally as the crank-arm rotates. The same shaft at the rear wheel receives the torque ration 1:1. To gain a useful travel speed it needs a small gearbox (about 1:6 ratio depending on the crank arm length and rear wheel size).

Terrafugia TF-X

The Massachusetts-based firm Terrafugia has announced its Transition design, which is part sedan, part private jet with two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car, will be on sale in less than two years. They have also unveiled plans for a TF-X model that will be small enough to fit in a garage, and won’t need a runway to take off. Motorised rotors attached to the wings of the TF-X make it possible to take off from standing still. This means cars could switch from driving to flying when they encounter traffic. However, the wingspan requires a diameter of 100 feet to do so.

They are on the top of the influence pyramid. Their new languages and behaviors are inspirational to people that are both younger and older than them. But the incredible power of today’s youth is directly related to those who came before them.

The future is here. The age of flying cars may not be, but hovercrafts are no longer a concept too far from reach. Chicago based design initiative Mercier-Jones aims to create the future of personal transportation today. All signs point to it as they unveil the first look at their remarkably inventive hovercraft. Futuristic, stylish, and most importantly, functional, the Mercier-Jones Hovercraft open-air vessel is ready to take flight on land or a body of water near you.

Drawing inspiration from a slew of luxury vehicles and supercars, the Mercier-Jones Hovercraft boast a low profile hull along with an aggressive front end and side thrust ports. Traveling on a cushion of air just about surface, the hovercraft seats two comfortably in its highly sophisticated frame featuring carbon fiber and alloy wheels fueled by a hybrid-electric drivetrain. Manufacturing will take place just outside of Chicago.

Selling Wine – The Wine Retailer

Anyone who has ever designed food and beverage packaging knows how difficult it is to stand out in the crowded sameness of food stores. This difficulty is magnified in the wine category. You must, in essence, express the wine’s distinctive qualities in the tiny space of the label, the cap, and perhaps some carton or POS applications. To make matters worse, various laws and regulations require that much of the label space is taken up by small print. There is also very little cost-effective wiggle room in the basic package: the bottle. Bottles are universally more or less the same, and the sameness is dictated by standardized manufacturing, transportation, storage and displays. Wine quality plays a major role in this as well, as does consumer perception. Wine that comes out of a box or a plastic container just doesn’t feel quite right.

In the retail selling environment, education and information now also demand their share of space as more and more novices want to know about wine. For the wine retailer, and for the designer of spaces where wine is sold, all of this poses a challenge: How to display hundreds of seemingly similar bottles in an attractive, interesting and functionally effective way. How to make shopping enjoyable and easy, and how to help consumers learn more about wine.
