The Lake Flato House.

In Texas, architecture firm Lake Flato has completed the ‘Hog Pen Creek Residence’, an expansive lakeside retreat connected by a long exterior boardwalk. Situated at the confluence of Hog Pen Creek and Lake Austin, the dwelling was envisioned by its owners as a playful property that encouraged outdoor living, and maximized the site’s tranquil views. The home’s L-shaped footprint and orientation helps negotiate heritage oak trees, a steeply sloping site, and aggressive setbacks from the water. The boardwalk connects a series of structures that step down the hillside, traversing a 75-foot lap pool, and terminating at a screened pavilion by the lake’s edge.

The main living area is a two-story volume with a lofted master bedroom and porches at both ends. This area of the home enjoys cool prevailing breezes and shade from the adjacent oak trees. The interior accommodates many operable windows that provide cross ventilation and daylight, while three pairs of oversized doors provide sweeping views of Lake Austin. Lake Flato carefully sited the project so that no existing trees had to be removed during its construction. However, one pecan tree was uprooted during a storm and was consequently incorporated into the design of tables and shelves within the home.

Royal Flush Super Slide

Florida is home to some awesome water parks.
But, nothing has caught our attention and the attention of millions like a new ride in Waco, Texas.
It’s called the Royal Flush and opened at BSR Cable Park earlier this year.
According to BSR Cable Park’s website, Royal Flush is the tallest and longest water slide in the world.
Royal Flush is 60 feet tall and has three 120 foot-long slides.
A video of the slide in action was posted on June 16, it has been viewed more than 8 million times.
The website states that all riders must wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket to ride the slide, but the promotional video does not show anyone wearing one.
The park charges $15 for an all-day pass.

Worlds First 3d Printed Metal Gun By Solid Concepts

Worlds-First-3D-Printed-Metal-Gun-by-Solid-Concepts

It seems there’s no end to 3D printing’s potential, and the world’s first 3D-printed metal gun is the latest innovation to be birthed from the budding technology. Many of you will remember the first 3D printed plastic gun (it was literally toasted after firing off just one shot), but this is something entirely different. The folks at Austin, Texas based Solid Concepts have created a metal 3D-printed gun using DMLS (direct metal laser sintering) technology, and this thing shows a lot of promise. Unlike its plastic predecessor, the metal version of the 1911 series firearm has fired off 50 rounds, and still going strong, with no damage to the gun itself (at least that’s why Solid Concepts says).  Before you get too worried about your neighbor printing out a batch of guns, the company says that “there are barriers to keep the public away from the technology for years.”

Schlitterbahn is world famous for its innovative water parks. The flag ship location in New Braunfels, Texas made headlines last decade when it unveiled the “Master Blaster,” the world’s first uphill water coaster. But Schlitterbahn’s latest project may be its most ambitious yet. The Verrückt, which appropriately enough means “insane,” is a 17-story water slide that designer Jeff Henry promises will be the tallest, fastest and steepest water slide in the world.

Twitter ‘Hate Map’

screen-shot-2013-05-14-at-1-41-43-pm

Students at Humboldt State University in California individually reviewed 150,000 geocoded tweets containing racist, homophobic, or otherwise offensive terms to build a “hate map” indicating where people in the U.S. are most bigoted. Or, at least, where they’re the most open about displaying their antisocial views. The picture doesn’t look good for the Eastern states, although admittedly the bulk of the population is there as well. Areas in Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, and Alabama show up bright red on the map, as do areas in more central states Indiana, Iowa, and Minnesota. The map is part of a larger project, called the Geography of Hate, by Humboldt State professor Dr. Monica Stephens. The data that forms the map comes from an analysis of every tweet posted between June 2012 and April 2013 that contained at least one of 10 designated “hate words,” including dyke, fag, chink, gook, wetback, and cripple.

But while the original list of tweets was generated by a machine, every single one of the 150,000 tweets containing one of the target words was individually examined by undergraduate students. As the project description states:

Because algorithmic sentiment analysis would automatically classify any tweet containing “hate words” as “negative,” this project relied upon the HSU students to read the entirety of tweet and classify it as positive, neutral or negative based on a predefined rubric. Only those tweets that were identified by human readers as negative were used in this analysis.

To protect the identity of potentially racist, homophobic, or otherwise bigoted Twitter users, the tweets were aggregated up to the county level, and counties with high levels of hate speech were colored red on the map. Areas with moderate levels — though still higher than the national average — are varying shades of blue, and unshaded areas were below the national average. Smaller towns seem to have a higher incidence of hate speech — in Virginia, for example, Palmyra is more hateful on Twitter than Richmond. And in Louisiana, New Orleans and Baton Rouge are less hateful than smaller towns nearby.
