San Francisco Loft by Lineoffice Architecture

The aim of this project was to meet the functionally separate domestic requirements of the owner in a space that would feel completely open and uninterrupted. After the existing space was cleared two programmed sculptural elements were inserted into this multi-sided ‘spine’ that moves from one end of the loft to the other and  also a solid form that contains the necessarily enclosed bath and laundry areas. The spine houses everyday domestic components like storage, dresser drawers, kitchen cabinets, etc., while navigating the subtle boundaries between the entry, sleeping, kitchen and main living areas. The solid form is carved away using steel and walnut doors and panels to reveal points of access to the bath and laundry room. These impressions on the otherwise blank plaster walls of the solid echo the materials and proportions of the more articulated spine. The material character of these elements like blackened steel, painted and walnut veneered casework, black granite and translucent glazing was selected to complement and showcase the existing doug-fir columns, beams and ceiling without overpowering the space.

Selling Wine – The Wine Retailer

Anyone who has ever designed food and beverage packaging knows how difficult it is to stand out in the crowded sameness of food stores. This difficulty is magnified in the wine category. You must, in essence, express the wine’s distinctive qualities in the tiny space of the label, the cap, and perhaps some carton or POS applications. To make matters worse, various laws and regulations require that much of the label space is taken up by small print. There is also very little cost-effective wiggle room in the basic package: the bottle. Bottles are universally more or less the same, and the sameness is dictated by standardized manufacturing, transportation, storage and displays. Wine quality plays a major role in this as well, as does consumer perception. Wine that comes out of a box or a plastic container just doesn’t feel quite right.

In the retail selling environment, education and information now also demand their share of space as more and more novices want to know about wine. For the wine retailer, and for the designer of spaces where wine is sold, all of this poses a challenge: How to display hundreds of seemingly similar bottles in an attractive, interesting and functionally effective way. How to make shopping enjoyable and easy, and how to help consumers learn more about wine.

Smarter Ride

The Smart City Cycle takes into consideration that you may have to carry some luggage with you when you head out. It could be as simple as groceries or toys for your children. The rear wheel of the cycle hosts extendable compartments that can hold your goodies for you. If required, then the storage extension can be completely removed as well. Either ways, it’s a modular cycle that suits your daily commuting needs.

The Google Drive.

You have to give it up to Google always trying something new or stealing everyone else’s winning idea. By now I’m sure most of us use or at least have a dropbox account, But with only 2 free gigs of space upon sign up it might not be enough unless you pay to upgrade. According to the official blog post, paid tiers are available for 25 GB, 100 GB or 1 TB storage upgrades, priced at $2.49, $4.99 or $49.99 per month, respectively. The question is will you use a Google Drive or does it look like yet another me-too crappy service from Google?  Only time will tell.

The Crypteks USB Drive.

With the increasing use of portable data devices, keeping your data private has become quite hard.  I often forget and leave my USB at the office or at friends’ houses, fortunately I don’t have much private data on my USB drive but a lot of people do.  For those people the Crypteks USB Drive is the perfect solution.

The Crypteks USB Drive comes in a very stylish cylinder shaped package that not only provides digital security but also physical security.  The physical security is provided by a five ring combination lock, each ring contains 26 letters and one symbol for a total of 14,348,907 combinations.  If someone got their hands on your Crypteks USB drive, it’ll take them quite a long time to just open the case and get to the USB stick which protects your data with another layer of security in the form of a 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption, which is a U.S. approved standard for up to “Top-Secret” data encryption.

The Crypteks USB Drive is made out of anodized solid-aluminum and measures approximately 3.1” in length and 1.1” in height.  The project is currently in the concept stage at kickstarter.com, the initial goal for pledges was $12,000 but that number has already been surpassed and currently stands at over $33,000.  You can pre-order a Crypteks USB drive starting at $130 for 8 GB and $160 for 16 GB model at kickstarter.com.

Tripple Your Storage Space.

‘Detach’ is a portable hard disk with three USB Sticks integrated into it. Each stick has its own unique appearance and memory capacity. The idea is to use it as one single memory drive or as individual modules, giving you the ultimate portable HD.  In other words, simple living for a complex worker.
