Valley Of The Blue Flame.

We know this sounds straight out of a Star Wars film, but Ruben Wu was on a trip to visit the Ijen and Bromo Tengger Semeru volcanoes in East Java last month.  Not all of it sounds that strange… he’s a Chicago-based photographer that captured the unusual sight of molten sulphur.  Ok, well, now it gets weird again.  Molten sulphur flows from fumaroles at the base of the aptly named Blue Fire Crater at Ijen. The area is usually swarming with tourists, but Wu stayed after sunset until the moon rose to capture these otherworldly images.

The journey into the Ijen Caldera is not for the faint hearted. A two-hour trek up the side of the rocky volcano is followed by another 45-minute hike down to the bank of the crater. The blue fire found at the base is the result of ignited sulphuric gas that burns up to 600 degrees Celsius (1,112 degrees Fahrenheit) and can flare up to 5 meters (16 feet) into the air. It is the largest “blue flame” area on Earth.  Check the photos out.

Disney x Star Wars = Star Wars Land?

On Christmas morning, Disney shared a behind-the-scenes update on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the massive 14-acre new Star Wars-themed land opening in Disney’s Hollywood Studios next year. But if you were too busy to sit through the entire show for your sneak peek, Disney has now shared the video online.

The video features brief commentary from some key figures responsible for bringing Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to life. “It will be jaw-dropping and incredibly emotional to walk into the land for the first time,” promises Carrie Beck, VP of Lucasfilm Story Group. “To actually be standing there amongst the buildings, amongst the ships, and have this feeling that it is all real. That it has been brought to life. And it is right there in front of you – it’s overwhelming.”

The behind-the-scenes video also features more details and updated footage from Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, the two attractions that will be featured in Galaxy’s Edge. While we’ve known for a while now that Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run will put guests in the cockpit of the fastest ship in the galaxy, the Rise of the Resistance ride has been a little more mysterious. The video finally sheds light on what park guests can expect from “the most epic attraction” Disney has ever built.

The New Star Wars Trailer Is Here.

Captain Phasma does a thing! The newest trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ is filled with many a shock, lots of surprise, and quite a bit of questions left to be answered.  I had a full blown tribunal discussion with a good friend of mine after he showed me this, but whether you’re a massive Star Wars fan, or you could take it or leave it, this is an amazing preview for what I’m sure will be an amazing addition to the Star Wars legacy.  Check the method.

The Incredible Final ‘Star Wars: Rouge One’ Trailer.

rogueone-astarwarsstory

The action-packed final trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is here, and it features plenty of exciting new footage from the Gareth Edwards-directed prequel.  We get our first proper look at Mads Mikkelsen as Galen Erso, more of Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera, and of course another glimpse of the returning man in black, Darth Vader.

Here’s Your First Look At Darth Vader In ‘Rouge One’.

Screen Shot 2016-08-12 at 12.16.28 AM

Spoiler alert, the back of his head looks exactly the same. So that’s not the most exciting part of the brand new ‘Rouge One’ trailer released tonight.  Arguably one of the most exciting things to happen during the 2016 Olympics so far, the Star Wars: Rouge One trailer features the cast from the previous teaser, along with new looks at a robot cross between C.3PO and Spock.  We get some looks at some brand new worlds, and the ‘U Wing’.  The over all look is reminiscent of ‘The Force Awakens’ and the best parts of the original trilogy, along with the thing that will make Star Wars fans go insane… The back of Vader’s head.  Check the method.

The First Look At ‘Rouge One: A Star Wars Story’ (Official Trailer 1).

Only two days after the digital release of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, 0ur first look at the a different corner of the Star Wars galaxy has surfaced.  The intriguing and unique ‘Star Wars Story’ of Rouge One features a look at a group of Rebel bandits, and their attempts to steal the plans for an Empire super weapon (one that you may recognize).  Staring Felicity Jones, and Forrest Whitaker, the brief but satisfying trailer paves the way for what may be an incredible story.  Check the method below.

Finn From Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Is The Real MVP.

john-boyega

On Friday, John Boyega met Star Wars super fan, 5-year-old Daniel Bell. The youngster has been diagnosed with a brain tumour and his wish was to meet Finn. That became a reality when the two spent the afternoon hanging out and passing around toys to other sick children in a London hospital. “When I heard about Daniel’s wish to meet Finn, I jumped at the chance to make it come true,” the actor says. “It was fantastic to be a part of his very special wish with Rays of Sunshine. It was also great to meet the children at The Royal London Hospital and be a part of something so positive.”

Screen Shot 2016-03-14 at 11.50.21 AM

Daniel’s mother meanwhile released a statement via Facebook in which she praised the actor for making her son’s wish come true. “Thank you so so much ‘Rays of Sunshine’ and John Boyega for granting Daniel’s wish to meet Finn and take toys to the hospital. It was just amazing, I have no words! Daniel is still totally overwhelmed, I have never seen him so happy.” Boyega has frequently shown himself to be a real class act and nice guy, and this is yet another example of that.

Screen Shot 2016-03-14 at 11.46.41 AM

This little stormtrooper Daniel had a wonderful wish after seeing the force awakens. Daniel currently lives with a brain tumour and rather than having Finn to himself he wanted Finn to meet the kids at the Royal London hospital and give them some toys. I stayed in character while I was with this brave boy asking him what a car was. He taught Finn about everything earth related! Really thankful for the opportunity this child granted me and I’m just humbled! I hope I played a little part in making you smile young stormtrooper.

Biggie Smalls x Star Wars?

Screen Shot 2015-12-17 at 12.38.36 AM

The brand new Star Wars is being released TONIGHT. Recently, a mixtape created by Richie Branson and Solar Slim merges music from the sci-fi series with some of The Notorious B.I.G.’s most popular tracks. John Williams’ orchestrations are interwoven with Biggie’s raps and are laced with some punchy boom bap and 808 drums.  Check out ‘Life After Death Star’.

Top 10 Female Action-Movie Heroes.

Neytiri avatar

Action movies have been storming the box office since almost the beginning of cinema, and iconic characters have been born from countless movies, and subsequent franchises.  Rating the top 10 action heroes is something any movie goer could probably do off the tops of their heads, but unfortunately female heroines have fewer spots in cinema history.  This being the case, we thought we’d have a go at the top 10 (of many) female movie icons.  Our honorable mention is Neytiri of ‘Avatar’.  James Cameron’s most successful motion picture may be about the dopey human male who gets all of the native Na’Vi killed on the planet Pandora, but we all know that Neytiri is the real hero here. She’s the warrior who always stood by her principles, and as played by Zoe Saldana (with the aid of an army of animators), she embodied a unique new action hero for the modern age.  The following list is IN an order, however, if you think the order should be moved around, feel free to comment, and let us know.

S

10. Alice – Resident Evil

alice-resident-evil

Of the two female-driven, utterly superficial action movie franchises, Resident Evil has the most personality. (Sorry, Underworld fans.) Milla Jovovich has been bounding from one ridiculous, zombie-fighting, clone-army forming situation to the next over the course of this ludicrous series, and it only gets sillier – and more entertaining – with every passing sequel. She still embodies unadulterated bad-assery in every film.

S

9. Foxy Brown – Foxy Brown

foxy-brown

Foxy Brown’s boyfriend was a secret agent, but when he’s killed in the line of duty she goes on a one-woman mission of revenge against a vile syndicate, destroying sex traffickers and rescuing their victims. Pam Grier is described as “a whole lotta woman,” and the description fits. She is raw and powerful and is an exemplary vision of what strong, driven (black) female heroines can look like.

S

8. Mindy Macready – Kick Ass

kick-ass

Mindy Macready, aka “Hit Girl,” is a contradiction. She’s a pre-teen martial arts master and mass murderer of bad guys, and that’s kind of awesome, but only if you ignore the fact that her father has brainwashed her into thinking there’s nothing wrong with it. Kick-Ass doesn’t spend much time questioning her state of mind, which makes it rather a superficial film if you think about it, but Chloe Grace Moretz is undeniably fierce and formidable anyway.

S

7. Yu Shu Lien AND Jen Yu – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

yu-shu-lien-and-jen-yu-crouching-tiger-hidden-dragon

Not one but two great action heroes headline Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning kung fu epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Michelle Yeoh represents maturity and grace and Zhang Ziyi represents recklessness and passion. Their fight together is one of the kung fu highlights of the 21st Century, and the two acclaimed actresses bring their characters to vibrant life even when they’re not kicking ass.

S

6. Princess Leia – Star Wars

leia

Princess Leia might need saving in Star Wars: Episode IV, but only once, and she only gets captured because she was being a badass. They bring her to Darth Vader, the most threatening person in the galaxy, and she says “I thought I smelled something” right to his face. Then she proceeds to plan rebel warfare, infiltrate criminal underworlds, strangle Jabba the Hutt to death and take charge in an epic speeder chase. She is anything but a typical movie princess. She is a royal badass, and in the upcoming ‘Force Awakens’ rumor has it, that she’ll be “General Badass”.

S

5. Imperator Furiosa – Mad Max: Fury Road

mad-max-fury-road

Although the Mad Max film is ostensibly about a male action hero, but that gets completely stolen by his female co-star. Mad Max is pretty much just along for the ride in Fury Road, while Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa kidnaps a warlord’s sex slaves and fights off horde after horde of high-octane bastards in her quest to find freedom. Theron explodes off the screen, and so does practically everything else in George Miller’s acclaimed post-apocalyptic thriller.

S

4. The Bride – Kill Bill

kill-bill

Over the course of the two Kill Bill movies, Uma Thurman takes us on a rich and complicated journey of self-actualization, tragic love and violent vengeance. She’s a thoroughly convincing fighter who dispatches an army of masked assassins, but when the time comes to confront the man who wronged her, she can still feel recognizably human emotions. Quentin Tarantino’s films are vast in scope and intimate in nature, and Thurman gives arguably her best performance within them.

S

3. Katniss Everdeen – The Hunger Games

hunger-games

Jennifer Lawrence is building up her action movie credentials (see also: X-Men: First Class and Days of Future Past), but she will always be a legend for playing the reluctant revolutionary Katniss Everdeen in the blockbuster Hunger Games series. She’s comfortable with a bow, uncomfortable with killing, and increasingly confident leading the disenfranchised to war against an apathetic ruling class. Plus she’s a beast with the bow and arrow.

S

2. Ellen Ripley – Alien

ripley-aliens

It was a miracle that Ellen Ripley even survived the first Alien movie. In James Cameron’s sequel, she finally fought back, taking the fight directly to the Alien queen and setting the stage for two more sequels in which she refused to be victimized ever again. Sigourney Weaver remains one of the great action hero icons, regardless of gender.

S

1. Dora The Explorer

XS_logo

JUST KIDDING.

S

1. Sarah Conor – Terminator 2

sarah-connor-terminator-2

Sarah Connor was running from danger throughout the first Terminator movie, and runs right into it in the blockbuster sequel to save her son from yet another killer automaton bent on bringing about the apocalypse. Linda Hamilton convincingly makes the transition from victim to hero, but James Cameron’s film wisely dedicates time to illustrating the unthinkable psychological toll the events of these movies have had on a woman who, prior to these events, as just as normal as you or I.  This is why we specified ‘Terminator 2’ because although she may be a regular 19 year old (Yeah… in the first one for some reason she’s 19 in the script), in the sequel she is a trained military machine, capable of flying off the rails to do whatever is necessary to save her son, and the future.

Sarah Jean Underwood’s Star Wars Halloween Costumes.

underwood-pbsw25 underwood-pbsw23 underwood-pbsw16 underwood-pbsw13

Former ‘Attack The Show host and Playboy Playmate Sara Jean Underwood features in this funny parody of the sexy Halloween outfit trend. Prepare to feel very confused by sexy Darth Vader, sexy Yoda, and sexy…. Admiral Ackbar.

It’s a trap. The Playboy-produced vid serves as an amusing parody of the various ridiculous sexy takes on character costumes doing the rounds, but it is also an excuse to shoot the lovely Sara Jean Underwood wearing very little. Those sneaky Nerf-herders. To be fair, some of the costumes actually look pretty cool, but sexy Bib Fortuna may haunt your nightmares for some time.

Star Wars, Lego, USB Drives?

goldusbrobot

When it comes to USB drives, they’re a necessity in most industries, but the style, size and design can vary wildly.  This USB 2.0 flash drive comes with a 4 gigabyte large storage capacity and a design that may bring the thoughts to a certain golden shiny protocol droid from the Star Wars saga.

Pop Culture Bros Connecting with Other Bros

Created by an artist known only as Paper Beats Scissors, this collection of  illustrations depicts the single moment when two different characters from pop culture meet and give each other an empathetic fist bump due to a similarly depressing trait that they both share. For instance, when the Dark Knight and Harry Potter meet for the first time, they fist bump the fact that they are both orphans. There are a huge amount of characters included within the series from film, television, video games, comic books, animation and technology.

Star Wars 1313 May Create A New Force Of Cinema.

Star-Wars-1313-Logo

Announced last summer, plans for Star Wars 1313, a state-of-the-art video game take on the Star Wars universe, are now on hold following the closing of LucasArts earlier this year. Today, however, The Inquirer managed to get a sneak peek at the work that went into the development of 1313 when Lucasfilm’s chief technology strategy officer Kim Libreri spoke at a BAFTA event in London.

“Everyone has seen what we can do in movies.  …We think that computer graphics are going to be so realistic in real time computer graphics that, over the next decade, we’ll start to be able to take the post out of post-production; where you’ll leave a movie set and the shot is pretty much complete.”

Libreri theorizes that the advancement of digital technology could lead to a point where big screen filmmaking could eschew post production, effectively providing directors with a finished VFX shot immediately after they shoot it.

“If you combine video games with film-making techniques, you can start to have these real deep, multi-user experiences.  Being able to animate, edit and compose live is going to change the way we work and it’s really going to bring back the creative experience in digital effects.”

It remains to be seen precisely how new technology might affect J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII or any of the other live action films in the Lucasfilm pipeline but, as you can see from the video below, the video game landscape is expanding rapidly.

Luxury Cruise Airship “Aether” Concept

01 02 03

Based on an airship platform, the “Aether” cruise experience by UK-based designer Mac Byers allows guests to experience a wider range of destinations in a shorter time, all the while enjoying some of the greatest views imaginable. The exterior of the vehicle is conceived to look unlike any airship ever produced – removing notions of danger, like the hindenburg disaster in 1937 . The concept visually communicates a new generation airship that is not only safe but clean, influenced by the thunderbird 2, star wars and the NASA space shuttle. Drawing reference from suspension bridge cables, the lobby integrates structural cords for details like stairways and tables. The interior space has been designed to be as open as possible – encouraging social interaction and providing a communal gathering place for users to meet.

Disney to Acquire Lucasfilm

Disney announced Tuesday that it is acquiring Lucasfilm LTD, including the Star Wars franchise, for $4.05 billion in stock and cash. In a press release announcing the acquisition, Disney announced that Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for a release date in 2015 and that “more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.” On a conference call, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that in addition to Episode 7, episodes 8 and 9 are also in the works. The goal, Iger said, was to “release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.” This is Disney’s third major brand and studio acquisition in the last ten years. In 2006, the company acquired Pixar for $7.4 billion. In 2009, Disney acquired Marvel for $4 billion. Lucasfilm co-chairman Kathleen Kennedy will become president of Lucasfilm under Disney and serve as Star Wars brand manager. George Lucas will serve as a creative consultant. The other subsdiaries of Lucasfilm, LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic and SKywalker Sound are also moving to Disney. The plan is to keep all Lucasfilm employees at its current San Francisco headquarters. What do you think of this merger between two of the biggest entertainment brands in the world?

Adidas Originals x Star Wars (2010).

Now, before all the sneaker heads jump on my face about this, I know this collection is from 2010.  However, having already written a post about about an earlier collection, and seeing as how my sneaker knowledge is relatively limited, I’m putting this post up now because the all the clothes that the collection produced are super ill, regardless of when they dropped.  Check the method.

The Han Solo and Millennium Falcon Coffee Tables.

I have to say that the nerd in me for sure came out when I saw these for the first time.  The Han Solo in carbonite table would be a perfect fit into my spot for a one of a kind nerded-out centerpiece.  The millennium Falcon coffee table comes a close second, but is still pretty dope.  Designed by UK based R9 Studios, the cold cast aluminum, machined hardware and toughened glass geeky Star Wars Tables go for about $2,050 (£1,250)

Star Wars Vs. Adidas Originals.

Star Wars and Adidas Originals teamed up back at the end of 2009 to provide a fleet of heat for your feet in the year of 2010. (Now before I explain more, my sneak-head homegirl Gabby is going to chew me out all the way from D.C. because I’m 2 years behind schedule with these.  But Gabs, you want me to post up the new sh*t, you gotta send it over first.)  The extensive Star Wars x adidas Originals Collection is categorized into three different packs: the Characters Pack, the Vehicles Pack, and the Direct Pack. Both parties draw upon their renowned imagery-characters and starships for Star Wars and grizzled silhouettes for adidas Originals-to create pairs with flair. A few of the aforementioned characters and vehicles include the TIE Fighter, Darth Vader, and the X-Wing. The adidas Originals silhouettes that serve as the respective canvases are the Nizza Hi, the ZX Runner, and the Samba.  And regardless of when they dropped, I still think their bomb.  Check the method.

Ikea Science Fiction.

I recently helped my assistant move into a new place in the city, and half the time, all I could think about was NOT wanting to set up some bookshelf from Ikea with its notoriously overly complicated directions.  After a while of thinking to myself, I wondered what are the most complex set of instructions one could find from Ikea…

Star Wars Swim.

Probably one of the posts that’ll have all the geeks going gaga.  (It’s not really new, but I still had to feature it.)  So if you ever wondered if the Princess Leia Gold bikini was the only sexy piece in Star Wars, here’s how you can change your mind. BlackMilkClothing created two amazing Swimsuits that features the designs of R2D2 and C3PO. Sold for 85$ each, these are probably going to be worn by every star wars fan’s girlfriend.

A Snoop Dogg, Star Wars, Daft Punk, And David Beckham Video?

Yes, not only is this true, it’s actually pretty old.  I got into a heated debate on the phone with my working colleague Neil about Snoop Dogg, and I mentioned his participation in the Adidas/Star Wars collab.  Neil instantly called me a liar and told me I was making things up, so I decided to write this post just in case anyone else was unaware of the summer 2010 Adidas ad featuring Snoop Dogg, David Beckham, Daft Punk, and a few other big entertainers.

Further than that, there was a second ad put out by Adidas featuring the same stars shortly after.  I know there are probably sneaker heads (like Gabby) cussing under their breath about how old this is, but I’m just trying to prove a point.

Type x Media

Typography is something that fascinates me to no end, and when Reginald Sylvester is your younger brother, and you have a graphic designer for a personal assistant, you see it all the time.  Essentially Typography the art of arranging, designing and modifying type. Creating a well designed typography poster is no easy task, and takes time and patience. When a poster focuses only on typography as its main element, the designer has to carefully craft his design to make sure that the type is both legible and artistic at the same time. In his 16 Posters series, graphic designer Jerod Gibson creates typographic movie posters and enhances them by adding the famous quotes from the movies to the silhouetted designs.  Check the method below.
