Android Wear

android-wear

Rather than build the physical smartwatch itself, the folks at Google have decided to build software to help power the hardware. The search giant calls this new technology Android Wear. While it is applicable to more than just watches, the wrist watch will be the first target for the new software. Android Wear allows you to interact with your device in a meaningful way – traffic reports on the way to work, taxi cabs within the local area, weather when you wake up in the morning, and fitness tracking among other things. Of course normal smartphone functions like music player, text messages, email, and the likes will also be controlled through Android Wear devices, all by using either your voice or the touchscreen interface. Google has already revealed that they have teamed up with some of the biggest smartphone makers in the game on the first round of wearables – brands like HTC, Samsung, Motorola, LG and Asus.

The new feature, called a keyless key, would enable its Starwood Preferred Guest members to go straight to their rooms and open the door via their smartphone, rather than having to go through the process of checking in. It will be trialed at the Aloft Harlem New York and Aloft Silicon Valley California hotels and builds on Starwood’s existing Smart Check In service. With the Keyless Key all that a guest will need is an Android smartphone running version 4.3 or newer or an iPhone 4S or newer. The locking mechanism works via Bluetooth so as long as the app is running, the door will automatically unlock or lock. If the trial is successful, Starwood plans to roll the feature out to all of its W and Aloft hotels, globally by the end of 2015.

Vertu Ti Ferrari Smartphone

Vertu-Ti-Ferrari-smartphone

Vertu has expanded its Ti line with a luxury smartphone whose design was inspired by the Ferrari F12 berlinetta. A limited edition of 2,013 smartphones will be produced and sold. The new Vertu Ti Ferrari is the result of a close collaboration between the luxury phone maker and the luxury sports car brand. Ferrari has supplied some of the red and black leather used in the seats of its sports cars for the leather accents along the smartphone’s casing. Vertu, in turn, has treated and conditioned the leather to ensure it will withstand the constant handling a smartphone is subject to. The smartphone’s casing is made of diamond-like carbon (DLC), a lightweight material ten times stronger than stainless steel, which Ferrari uses to protect its motors from extreme heat and friction. The back of the device is modeled after the aerodynamic lines of the F12 berlinetta, while the position of the supercar’s headlights is echoed in the position of the phone’s camera. The Vertu Ti Ferrari’s feature set is not particularly impressive. Equipped with a 3.7-inch screen, an 8MP photo camera at the back and a 1.3MP front camera for video chats, the smartphone runs under Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and is equipped with Bluetooth, wifi and 3G+ connectivity. The start screen of the Vertu Ti Ferrari features the signature colors of the famous Italian car maker, and the Vertu for Ferrari App provides access to the latest Ferrari news from the brand’s social network pages and the automotive trade press. The on-screen clock is modeled after the F12 berlinetta’s tachometer, and the four available ringtones purr with the sound of the grand tourer’s V12 engine.

International practice UNstudio was commissioned by ferris wheel investment to develop a giant observation wheel in Japan, an amusement structure that is widely popular as a form of entertainment for the island nation. ‘Nippon moon’ has been envisioned to differ from existing ones of its kind with a comprehensive interactive system, developed in partnership with experientia who assisted in providing research on how behaviour could influence user’s interaction with the architectural and digital infrastructure. One’s all-encompassing experience is largely influenced by an accompanying augmented reality app which focuses on three main areas: discovery, the ride and the return. Upon reservation, one must choose the type of virtual journey they wish to take, as each single or double-story capsule has a different theme relating to history, culture, or the environment. From the moment you buy your ticket, the interaction begins. The digital AR platform allows users to see how many seconds are left until their departure. Upon arrival, participants have the freedom to view the welcome area and facilities in ‘active queuing’, instead of waiting in a traditional line for their turn. Upon embarking, the app which works for smartphones and tablets also functions intuitively with each of the pod’s transparent technological skin, becoming a communication device between cars. this kind of information tailors a one-of-a-kind experience, enhancing one’s perception of their chosen topic. One’s senses are further heightened through the integration of augmented animations and sounds. Afterward pictures taken by visitors are posted to the hall of fame in the lobby, becoming a continuous part of the journey after disembarking. Thus, the design creates an active learning environment for riders with the hope to create a significant memory and impact on japanese culture. The concept of observation wheels is not new, but UNstudio’s concept combines design, with engineering to create a fully integrated virtual world.
