Robots Making Your Coffee?


They say that preparing food requires love and a human touch, but honestly, something as mechanical as making you a cup of coffee could surely be handled by a robot, couldn’t it? Think about the methodical approach to preparing a latte or a cappuccino, and the number of steps that could go wrong because of human error. The CafeX wants to do away with that by introducing robotic arms into the mix. Your coffee order becomes a line of code that the robot follows to the absolute T, and that means three things. A perfect cup every single time, no dealing with chatty baristas, and lastly, not worrying about having your name spelled wrong on the to-go cup.  CafeX’s revolutionary system doesn’t mechanize the coffee machine, but rather, replaces the barista with a capable robot. Enter your order into a kiosk (or even via the app) along with your name and payment details.

The robotic arm maneuvers the coffee machine, picks the glass up and puts your brew together, handling as many as three orders at the same time (working at a dizzying speed of two orders per minute). It can, with a great deal of dexterity, hold, stir, and even transport cups filled with hot liquid without spilling any of it, or burning itself. It then places the cup onto a platform which descends into a chamber that you can then put your hand into and collect the cup of coffee that’s been perfectly brewed to your liking. The biggest advantage? 24×7 coffee shops because you don’t have to worry about human labor. Also, no tips. The disadvantage? Less motivation to go to the coffee shop because the cute barista you were hitting on got replaced with a robotic arm. Although CafeX says there will always be a CafeX human staff-member on site to facilitate this customer-robot interaction.

In the dystopian future of The Matrix, humanity has been converted into a renewable crop by energy-starved sentient machines, with “farms” of human bodies harnessed and harvested for their metabolic output. It’s one of those disturbing sci-fi premises which can leave one suspicious of artificial intelligence, robotic vacuums, and the whole “internet of things” trend. But maybe Agent Smith and his robotic compatriots were onto something in regards to the human body as a renewable energy source. The ‘e-pulse conductor’ is a pendant without a chain, harvesting bioelectricity from the human body’s neurological system, “plugged” into the spine via pincer interface. Industrial design graduate student, Naomi Kizhner of Jerusalem’s Hadassah College envisions jewelry one day serving purposes beyond adornment, a three-piece collection connecting and converting the human body into one gigantic battery for biological data feedback. Energy Addicts’ entomological-styled accessories hints of early David Cronenberg at hisbest/worst, the jewelry’s macabre beauty furthered by how each piece is worn: sharp pincers and stings pierce skin, establishing an “interface” between body and each bio-electrically powered accessory. Blood Bridge: designed to tap directly into the action of ulnar artery – the body’s main blood vessel – the pulmonary flow of the heart spins an enclosed wheel to generate electricity.

NIKE Robotic Sneakers

Based on the desires of intelligent humanoid robots, bulgarian artist Simeon Georgiev has taken NIKE‘s air max 1 and roshe run silhouettes and adapted them for the future. Both sneakers have been reworked to maintain their distinct lines and elements, evoking an additional sense of rigidity. The overall aesthetics boast clean and refined color panels, with lacing systems claimed to be more advanced than NIKE’s marty mcfly’s ‘back to the future concept shoes.

Giant Robotic Beetle

Japanese machine shop owner hitoshi takahashi built this 11-meter-tall robotic walking beetle called KABUTOM RX-03. The mobile sculpture, which takes its name from kabuto — a type of rhinoceros beetle typical to Japan — features characteristics typical to the insects like pointing horns and elongated legs. With over 30 moving parts, the machine includes a variety of technological details, such as the ability to shoot steam from the top of its head and its remote controlled legs that can reach speeds up to 4 kilometers per hour. Weighing 17 tons in total, the robot can transport up to seven people with one driver riding on top and six occupants fitting in an internal compartment.

When equipped with the assistive device, walking can be achieved by a forward lateral weight shift to initiate a step. Battery-powered motors drive the legs and replace neuro-muscular function. The first generation of ekso is intended for medically supervised use by individuals with complete or incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) or disease, and other forms of lower extremity paralysis or weakness due to multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, parksinson’s guillain barre or other neurological disease. With medical clearance, the suit can typically facilitate walking for individuals with up to C7 complete, or any level of incomplete spinal cord injury.
