The Crown Casino.

Crown Melbourne (also referred to as Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex) is a casino and resort located on the south bank of the Yarra River, in Melbourne, Australia. Crown Casino is a unit of Crown Limited, and the first casino of the now-international Crown brand.  Initially having opened in 1994 on the north bank of the Yarra, Crown Melbourne relocated and re–opened on the south bank of the Yarra, in 1997. It remains one of the central features of the Southbank precinct of the Melbourne central business district. The entire complex has a space of 510,000 m²—the equivalent to two city blocks—making it the largest casino complex in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the largest in the world. The complex also hosts four hotels, Crown Towers, Crown Promenade, and Crown Metropol, with a fourth hotel approved for construction which is expected to commence in 2018.  See you soon.

Ever Wanted To Go To The Maldives?

huf hufav

Trendsetting Huvafen Fushi has been raising the benchmark since its first inception two years ago. Opening its doors to feature the world’s first underwater spa, Huvafen Fushi has since earned its spot on the coveted Conde Nast Traveller MagazinesUK and US Hot List. This discreetly luxurious, contemporary retreat is located on its own lagoon on a tiny island in North Male Atoll. I arrived late into the night direct from Singapore, the flight doesn’t get in until 10pm (note: book Emirates instead to arrive during the day). Waking up in the Maldives is something everyone should experience before they die.

Ice-Hotel-suite-by-Natuski-Saito-and-Shingo-Saito-600x543

Sweden’s famous Ice Hotel, known for its individually designed suites carved out of ice and snow, is offering guests the chance to design their own bespoke suites for winter 2014. The suites, set to be available starting in December, will be made exclusively to order and guests will be involved in the design process, getting the chance to work closely with the ice and the resort’s ephemeral art. The suites will be made from the exclusive natural ice from the river Torne and feature original handmade art work. Once the client has left, the suites will be left to melt into the river with the spring. Guests will be given a bottle containing some of the melted ice, along with the sketches and blueprints for the design, and photographs of the suite. Located 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, the Ice Hotel has been a pioneer in ice art since its launch 25 years ago.

Sheraton Huzhou Hot Spring Resort

07 09 03 04

Chinese-based Sheraton hotel chain is planning an aggressive expansion in 2013, opening 30 new branches in the Asia-pacific area and four in Africa and the Middle East and 15 alone will open in China within the year. The “Sheraton Huzhou Hot Spring Resort” is perhaps the most striking of this endeavor, designed by Beijing-based architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects. It could be described as horseshoe shaped, or maybe as a partially submerged bold serif-faced ‘O’, or even possibly a dipped elongated donut, but no matter how you describe it, the newly opened Sheraton Hushou Hot Spring Resort is not your average looking hotel.

Contemporary private Palm Beach property, Sydney

Contemporary-Property-Australia-01 Contemporary-Property-Australia-00 Contemporary-Property-Australia-02 Contemporary-Property-Australia-03-910x910

Australian interior designers and architects Pike Withers Interior Architecture have designed a stunning residential property in Palm Beach, Sydney, Australia. According to the architects:

The client had visited our recent project, the exclusive Qualia resort on Hamilton Island and wanted us to bring this resort feel into his beach house. He wanted a laid back feel that was intrinsically calming. A particular request was ‘to be able to sit on the view’. This required an extensive re-think to the planning of the whole house. The kitchen and living areas were completely re-planned to create larger spaces that flowed seamlessly into one another. Balconies were extended and an automated sliding roof was installed over the living area to allow the house to literally ‘open up’. It was important for us to maintain an Australian feel and avoid the Bali cliché’s in producing a resort aesthetic. Although the aim was to have open spaces that were more communal and social this needed to be balanced with quieter spaces. The use of built in banquettes throughout the contemporary Australian house created intimate spaces to sit and escape or soak up the view. A particular innovation was the installation of the retractable roof that spanned over the whole living area.As the project was a refurbishment, there was always a carefully considered approach to what we could re-use. The bones of the house were good, so nothing was demolished without justification. Some of the elements from the existing house, such as some large timber beams were re-used into the landscaping. There was also an emphasis on improving the amenity of the contemporary house. The building changes meant that ventilation and light penetration were improved greatly. The use of custom made sliding timber and glass louvered screens meant that these elements could be controlled and flexible and therefore prevented a drain on artificial heating/cooling and lighting.

A Real Life ‘Jurassic Park’?

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer is looking for a way “to clone a dinosaur from DNA” as part of the park-style area at his new resort in Coolum.  Reports suggest that Palmer has been in “deep discussion” with the team that successfully cloned Dolly the Sheep.  If rumors are correct, Palmer hopes to include the cloned animal in his recently announced $2.5 billion plan to build a resort in Coolum, a beachside town on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.  The project is set to include a new airport, a beachfront hotel and retail development, a casino, a monorail, a theme a park, water park, an aviary and an aquarium.  Palmer, one of the richest men in Australia, is building a modern version of the Titanic, planned to be ready to sail in 2016 from London to New York.  The boat will be as similar as possible to the original Titanic in decoration and design but will be built using modern technology.

A Solar Floating Resort.

Italian industrial designer Michele Puzzolante has come up with a conceptual floating luxury hotel suite he claims could be entirely self-powering thanks to the dye-sensitized solar cells which would be integrated into the vessel’s walls.  Puzzolante suggests his “Solar Floating Resort” could be navigated along exotic coast lines, while its six resident passengers observe marine wildlife thanks to its underwater “observation bulb”.

The ‘Ocean Pearls’ Hotel.

Jumeirah has opened a new cluster of ‘water villas’, dubbed ‘Ocean Pearls’, at its all-suite Jumeirah Dhevanafushi hotel in the Maldives.  Designed to make visitors feel as if they are in the middle of the ocean, the new villas sit on platforms suspended directly above the water, nearly a kilometer offshore from the main resort.  The cluster of villas is connected by a decking walkway, which allows residents to easily access the shared infinity pool, bar, seafood restaurant, elevated library and spa treatment rooms, which are also suspended above the water.  The villas measure 270 square meters or 340 square meters and each offers a deck at the rear overlooking the water, complete with a sunken bathtub and steps down, allowing for a dip in the Indian Ocean.  The Ocean Pearls also offer a 24-hour butler service, on hand to make sure that the journey goes as smoothly as possible.  The luxury property is the latest from ambitious Middle Eastern group Jumeirah, which is set to double the number of hotels it runs in the next 14 months as it grows to compete with luxury brands such as Mandarin Oriental and Four Seasons.  Openings over the next year include Kuwait, Majorca, and Azerbaijan, (according to HotelierMiddleEast.com).

A $3 billion Casino Resort Plan For Miami?

Miami is to get a new $3 billion mega-resort next year constructed by the same firm behind Singapore’s massive Resorts World Sentosa destination.  The enormous Resorts World Miami, which will overlook Miami’s prized waterfront, is set to open next year in between Miami International Airport and Miami Beach, Malaysian developer Genting confirmed.  The development will stretch three miles along the bayfront, filling a total of 13.9 acres and containing multiple skyscrapers with a futuristic ocean-inspired design.  With approximately 10 million feet of space, it will be one of the largest development projects in the history of Miami, one of the U.S. most popular holiday destinations.

A total of four hotels will call Resorts World Miami home, offering a total of 5,200 rooms, alongside which a series of residential towers will also be built.  Underneath the skyscrapers is an eight-story base building, which will hold a 250,000 square foot retail centre, over 50 restaurants, lounges bars and nightclubs and the largest ball room in the United States.  Genting also confirmed that it plans to include a casino, subject to approval from Florida’s lawmakers.  On top of the base podium’s rooftop will be a 3.6 acre lagoon with beaches, allowing guests to swim over 1,000 feet from one end to the other — or walk the length of the building on a new Baywalk, which stretches for three miles.

Genting is the name behind the enormous Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore, which, along with Marina Bay Sands, was among the world’s first truly ‘integrated resort’ and has significantly boosted Singapore’s tourism income.  With the announcement of Resorts World Miami, it looks like Florida could also be in for a touch of the Genting magic.

Luxury In Africa.

The lodges contain an eclectic mix of African heritage and European contemporary furniture which adds a luxury feel to this unique African game reserve.  All of the locations on the reserve have an extreme sense of tranquility about them.  I’m not sure about vacation rates and so on, but I’d love to spend some time at Singita on a trip to Africa.

Luxury hotel opens in Mecca landmark?

It’s true… Fairmont has opened its new landmark property in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, becoming the second hotel brand to occupy the Abraj Al Bait Complex.  The hotel is situated inside the Makkah Clock Royal Tower, the focal point of an enormous project to upgrade the precincts of the Two Holy Mosques in Mecca and Medina.  Standing 76 stories high, the Makkah Clock Royal Tower is the tallest concrete building in the world and features four 40-meter clock faces visible from 17 kilometers away.  Fairmont’s new five-star property features 858 rooms, serviced by 76 elevators designed to provide quick access to the the holy Masjid al Haram for prayers.  There are nine restaurants that range from Indian and Lebanese cuisine to a steakhouse, which Fairmont says is the first à la carte fine dining establishment in any hotel in Mecca.  Thanks to its proximity to the Holy Ka’aba, Islam’s most sacred site, the luxury chain is marketing the hotel as a “beacon for pilgrims” — guests can also visit an on-site museum for Islamic icons and objects of arts, designed to promote the region’s culture and heritage.  Abraj Al Bait will eventually hold three luxury hotels, along with luxury apartments, a four-floor shopping mall, two heliports and a conference center, making it one of the largest buildings in the world.  Raffles opened its Makkah Palace hotel in August, and Swissotel is set to welcome the first guests to its 1,571-room property in 2011, marking the brand’s first entry into the Middle East.

So who’s got some “Arab money”?

The REAL Shangri-La

Luxury hotel chain Shangri-La announced that it would be coming to its namesake region in China September 9 — but is Shangri-La’s Shangri-La the real deal?  The chain has broken ground on a 230-room city resort in Diqing, a city in Shangri-La country in the Chinese province of Yunnan, set to open in early 2013.  The new low-rise resort will feature guest rooms that average 40 square meters in size and several Chinese and speciality restaurants, along with a health club, spa and beauty salon and indoor lap pool at the hotel.  Shangri-La was first described by James Hilton in a 1933 novel entitled Lost Horizon — and rather disappointingly for guests of the Shangri-La hotel, it was a fictional place, inhabited by mystical, almost immortal people.
