The ZIIIRO Mercury.

Mercury_black_purpleweb_2048x2048

The ZIIIRO Mercury watch displays time in a simple and unique way. The tip of the inner swirl represents the current hour, while the outer swirl displays the minutes, with a continuous gradient movement showing the passing through time.  Brilliantly designed, and something I’d thoroughly love to have for my birthday.

Awesome Sh*t You Can Buy.

Untitled-1

So I don’t normally plug retail sites, (unless I’m getting paid to) however, I came across a site looking for some wedding gifts for a friend, and I have to shout its praises from the rooftops.  The site ‘Awesome Sh*t You Can Buy’ has quite the selection of random, astonishing, and rare items.  For example… the Batmobile (not joking), things like a Facebook shower curtain, all black playing cards, or even a bullet proof business suit.  For sure take a browse, and you’ll find something you’ll like.  Below are just a small handful of some of the random sh*t you CAN buy.  Check the method.

Pink Star Diamond Auctioned for a Record of $83 million

Pink-Star-diamond-600x399

A plum-sized diamond known as the “Pink Star” was auctioned in Geneva Wednesday for $83 million, a world record for a gemstone. The diamond had been estimated at $60 million. Three years ago, Sotheby’s set an auction record of $46.2 million for a diamond when it sold the “Graff Pink” gemstone. The Sotheby’s auction came a day after rival house Christie’s sold an almond-shaped diamond dubbed “The Orange” for $35.5 million, also a record in its category. The 59.60-carat “Pink Star” is the largest in its class ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), with the second biggest less than half its size. The sparkling oval-cut rock measures 2.69 by 2.06 centimetres (1.06 by 0.81 inches), and weighs 11.92 grammes (0.026 pounds). In addition to its top color and clarity ratings, it falls into a rare subgroup with the purest diamond crystals and extraordinary optical transparency, comprising less than two percent of all gem diamonds. The “Pink Star” was 132.5 carats in the rough when it was mined by De Beers in Africa in 1999, according to Sotheby’s.. It was cut and polished over two years by Steinmetz Diamonds, and unveiled to the public in 2003 under the title of the “Steinmetz Pink”.

McLaren P1 Broke Record on The Nürburgring Ring

McLaren-P1-600x375

A video posted to YouTube shows the UK supercar company’s latest flagship, the P1, setting an unbelievable lap time of just 6 minutes 47 seconds. If true, then that would make the P1 the fastest street-legal production car in history to lap the historic and terrifying circuit, known in the trade as the Green Hell. The 12.8-mile (20.6km) undulating track has in recent years become the proving ground for any car with sporting aspirations. As a result, those that know base their supercar and hypercar buying decisions not on acceleration or top speed, but on that all-important lap time. Currently the production car lap-time record is held by the equally rare and exotic Porsche 918 Spyder. In September it became the first such car to lap the circuit in less than seven minutes, posting a confirmed time of six minutes, 57 seconds. To put that into perspective, the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1 managed it in seven minutes 19 seconds and the mighty Ferrari Enzo in seven minutes and 25 seconds. All of which would make the McLaren time — it shaves a whole 10 seconds off the record — even more remarkable.

Exotic Beetles

Chinese artist Kebel Li exposes the magnificence of earth’s insect species in his sculptural work with beetles. The already deceased bugs are reproduced to appear as if in their habitat, closely mimicking their instinctual gestures. Li collects extremely rare and visually fascinating beetles from around the world, which exhibit incredible physical characteristics like gleaming metallic exoskeletons and razor sharp horns. In order to properly and optimally conserve the specimens, they undergo a lengthy preservation process: the dried insects are put into a relax chamber filled with wet paper and anti-molding chemicals, which makes their joints movable again. They are then carefully pinned and posed onto an organic branch base and left to dry there for 4-5 days. The insects are chemically stable and, without physical damage, will stay preserved in this state for hundreds of years.

The ‘Love Mattress’.

flexible-couples-sleeping-mattress flexible-lovers-cuddling-mattress flexible-love-mattress-design

Snuggling is an essential if rarely-discussed component of a comfortable sleeping arrangement for many (pairs of) people, usually aided indirectly by soft mattresses and/or strategic sheet and pillow usage.  This bed-topping design by Mehdi Mojtabvi proposes a different-but-parallel approach, turning a single-piece cushioned support into multiple modules.  The resulting strips create optional gaps into which an arm, leg, foot or hand can comfortably slip in order to wrap around a loved one (or perhaps survive being crushed by an over-snuggling canine best friend).  As for finding cozy positions, nothing is mandated by the layout in particular – each fold can flex open or closed depending on usage, leaving it up to individuals (or pairs) to make use of it as they will.

Hublot Black Caviar Bang

The latest addition to the million-dollar watch club is Hublot’s limited-edition Black Caviar Bang based on their highly acclaimed Big Bang model. It features an 18k white gold case and a clasp that features hundreds of precision-cut black diamonds. The watch’s total of 34.5 carats is made up of 322 diamonds on the case, 179 on the bezel and another 30 on the clasp. These rare black diamonds are responsible for that touch of luxury and the heavy million-dollar price tag. The watch uses the Hublot caliber HUB Solo T movement which is a tourbillon volant which has a power reserve of a hundred and twenty hours. Creating this exceptional watch demanded over 2000 hours of meticulous work, from design to final adjustment, without forgetting the research and development, programming of the machines, choice of tools, diamond cutting, optical checking of each part, and setting and casing.

Meek Mill ft. Fabolous – Racked Up Shawty (Official Video).

Meek Mill and Maybach music seem to have mastered the formula for churning out hits one after another.  Take a look and listen to the next one in life titled “Racked Up Shawty”.  Just incase while watching the video and you think something’s wrong with YouTube… Its not.  There are entire segments of the video blurred out to protect the identity of certain women.  (A little odd, but still entertaining.)

The Perrelet Turbine Diver Watch.

To explore the world’s fascinating seabeds, the Turbine watch adopts an original design that is as symbolic as it is functional. The rounded contours of the 11-blade upper rotor subtly evoke a submarine propeller.  Spinning freely above the SuperLuminova-coated surface, it creates the illusion of an entirely luminescent dial that naturally gains intensity at night or in the darkness prevailing at great depths.  Dive times are measured by a rotating inner bezel ring on which the average 20-minute duration stands out clearly thanks to a play on colors and volumes.  The Arabic numerals, the main hour-markers as well as the subtly black-rimmed hour and minutes hands are also coated in Superluminova, thus enabling them to stand out against the background when it is lit up by the effect of the turbine in motion

30 Compelling Comic Book Covers.

Comic books have been a staple in pop-culture for generations.  Some of the more iconic super heroes have even become idolized by celebrities and fans alike.  Shaq has an obsession with Superman, (and eve I’ve been consumed by the character of Tony Stark as well) but no matter who makes a fuss about their favorite heroes, the artwork that brought those heroes to life is what solidifies them in our minds.  Check out 30 examples of the greatest comic book to be published.

The Evolution Of Paint.

Valencia-based designers Culdesac have created ‘The Paint Evolution’ for the paint company Valentine.  Their collaborative project celebrates the ever changing nature of artistic tools and implements within the valentine brand.
Brushes and rollers in this creative collection feature an interactive, form-as-function approach to the construction of each piece.  One may anticipate the mark and movement of the implement in an artist’s hand simply by examining the form of each object.

‘Genetic mutations give birth to imaginative instruments: the brush compass, pendulum or whip give us a clue to the behavior of paint through sketches and through history’

The Urwerk UR-110 ST.

Urwerk’s latest version of the UR-110 Torpedo is the UR-110 ST. It has a steel front plate engraved with horizontal grooves and coated in black AlTiN, coupled with striking yellow numerals and indices.  The time is shown on the right side of the watch. Three hour satellites follow a vertically arced line, graded from 0 to 60 minutes, in a downward motion.  Planetary gearing keeps the satellites and their arrow-shaped “torpedoes” in parallel formation as they take turns to indicate the time as they pass the 60-minute track.

Super Modern Coen Lamps.

Designed by the Berlin-based studio “böttcher+henssler”, Coen lamps are a white version of the designers’ dark prototype lamp, Troll. Although Troll is made of sheet metal, it brings back images of an upturned wooden ancient sauna accessory (a pail with two handles) called “kiulu” in Finnish. In contrast, the slim, white (and silver) Coen lamps are supremely stylish, quite at home next to an Alvar Aalto Paimio chair.  Coen lamps are part of the new collection by the lighting manufacturer ANTA Leuchten GmbH. Coens will be introduced at Salone Internazionale del Mobile’s Euroluce next week.  Böttcher+henssler is a product design studio founded in 2007 by Moritz Böttcher und Sören Henssler. Winners of a red dot product design award and other accolades, the duo focuses on designing beautiful and functional consumer products.

Rare Vintage Sunglasses.

RESPECT MY AUTHORITAY!

I’m the type of person who wears shades only in hot weather.  Oddly enough it can be brighter than Reese Witherspoon’s teeth outside, but if its cold, I just don’t feel the need to wear shades.  But after peeping a collection of truly magnificent sun glasses that my good friend Andrew M. (a.k.a. Moodge) owns, I got interested in collecting.  When I began my hunt for rare vintage sunglasses, I was a bit stumped on where to start my search.  After weeks of scanning the web, I came across an ingenious solution that would have never crossed my mind in a million years… RareVintageSunglasses.com.  They’re selection is remarkable, and although their prices reflect the rarity of the pieces they carry, they’re a good value if you have the cash for rare sunglasses market.  Check out their site and some of their gear.

The De Bethune Dream Watch IV iPhone Case.

De Bethune has released the Dream Watch IV, an iPhone 4S case that features a mechanical clock as well as protection for your phone… and your brain.  Clearly inspired by the unique piece made for Only Watch 2011 (below), the pocket watch face is made from blued titanium with gold and diamond stars.  The Dream Watch IV also provides electromagnetic protection for the user by reducing the physiological impact of its potentially damaging waves.

The Dream Watch IV follows De Bethune’s launch of the DBM (pictured below), a crocodile cell phone case fitted with a traditional two-hand timepiece.  Limited to just 12 pieces, the Dream Watch IV will be officially unveiled at the De Bethune exhibition to be held in Geneva from January 15-20, 2012, during the SIHH.

Stamps for £1m‎?

The world’s most famous stamp, the elusive “Post Office Mauritius”, was sold the other day for a record breaking £1,053,090 ($1,600,000) at Spink in London.  This is a record price for a stamp sold in the United Kingdom.  Nearly half a dozen bidders in the room participated as the price of the lot shot skyward.  The stamp was one of the highlights of the Chartwell collection formed by businessman and philanthropist Sir Cyril Humphrey Cripps.  Over the next 18 months, Spink will sell The Chartwell Collection, which is the most valuable collection of stamps to come up for auction in modern times.  The collection consists of some of the finest material for Great Britain and the British Empire ever seen before and it is all material that is fresh to the marketplace.  Currently held in just over 80 stamp albums, The Chartwell Collection is estimated to fetch well in excess of £20,000,000 before the last lot is sold in December 2012.  Olivier Stocker, Chairman and CEO of Spink, comments: “The Chartwell Collection is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the biggest “wow” moments we have ever experienced here at Southampton Row.  When the collection arrived in London it was amazing to watch as our specialists turned the pages of what may be one of the finest philatelic collections of our time.  Over eighty albums were opened, examined and taken in and it was wonderful to see the faces of the Spink team as treasure after treasure was revealed.  The story behind this collection is absolutely amazing and so unusual in so many ways. It is a great pleasure to be a part of these momentous sales.”  For all that money, the message you send with that stamp better be important.

The Horodron HD-01.

Everyone now-a-days knows that I’m quite the watch enthusiast, so when my assistant showed me the HD-01 by designer Johnathan Frey, I was extremely thankful.  The watch is uses E-ink to for both form and function, allowing the bold and radical lines to make the watch beautiful and readily visible. The Horodron HD-01 is made of glossy black metal, embellished with small chrome parts. It’s a simplistic, edgy, unique time piece that anyone who’s crazy about watches should take a look at.

Another Set Of Dope Watches.

So I hope it’s clear by now to people who have been following the blog that I’m a huge watch enthusiast.  I’ve been collecting rare/unique watches for the last few years, and I’ve posted up a few other posts on the subject but I keep running into better and more unique watches.  Some of the following are overly functional, some are simply stylish, and others are dramatically unique, but all of the below are examples of a few of my favorites.
