eBay Unveil 3D Printing App

ebayexact_01

As the 3D printing revolution continues to gain pace, eBay have jumped on the bandwagon with a new iPhone app that lets users customise accessories before they are printed and shipped out to them. Named eBay Exact, the simple app shows you several items from 3D printing companies MakerBot, Sculpteo and Hot Pop Factory – mostly iPhone cases and jewelry. You then pick an item and modify features like the pattern, material, shape and color. Although the app is rather basic at this stage, it could become key part of eBay’s business, signalling a shift towards highly customisable products.

Check out this Nike store display by the Finland-born, Amsterdam-based illustrator Kustaa Saksi before, but this time, it is his fantastical paper display at the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair. The intricate and delicate display from 1120 stacks of A4-size paper (total of 700,000 sheets of paper) suspended from 44,000 points in the ceiling. Ceiling frescoes, church domes, altars – these were all part of the inspiration for Saksi and Wingårdh who concluded that paper is still them most commonly used means of communication and therefore the perfect material for the display.

Sayaka Ganz Recycled Sculptures

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka explains that, “Japanese Shinto beliefs are such that all objects and organisms have spirits, and objects that are discarded before their time weep at night inside the trash bin… or so they teach children at many preschools.” Whether truth or tale, the image stuck with Sayaka as she moved from country to country. “I had a strong desire to fit in, and to make people and objects surrounding me fit together to create harmony,” she tells. “My goal is for each object to transcend it is origins by being integrated into the form of an animal or some other organism that seems alive and in motion.”

Using possibly the cheapest material around—thrift store plastics that have already been used or trashed—Sayaka Kajita Ganz still manages to make pieces that look priceless.
