Jellyfish In SPACE.

The all-female artist collective ‘Beyond Earth’ introduces ‘Living Light’, a vibrant, jellyfish-like balloon artwork designed to be launched into earth’s stratosphere.  The craft combines biology, artificial intelligence, and aerospace technology to explore the connections between our blue planet and the boundlessness of outer space.  On June 18, 2021, the installation flew nearly 19 miles above the Earth’s surface aboard the inaugural trial flight of a shuttle called ‘Neptune One’, becoming the first large-scale artwork to fly into space.  The design by ‘Beyond Earth’ draws inspiration from the vast biodiversity of aquatic life on Earth.  “The depths of the ocean reveal an endless frontier of Earth’s biology, where many of the inhabitants create and use light in beautiful, often mesmerizing ways”.  ‘Living Light’ mimics the iridescent qualities of these marine species, illuminating its surroundings as it enters the dark abyss of space.  To realize this one-of-a-kind piece, the artists researched thousands of aquatic life forms, creating an extensive dataset of biological structures that float, move, and glow in the ocean, as if traveling in space.

The dataset was then used for machine learning to generate the inner organ designs for ‘Living Light’, a method that combines biomimicry and artificial intelligence.  In this way, hundreds of artistic images of new imaginary space organisms were formed, with ‘Living Light’ taking shape as the summation of these creatures.  On June 18, 2021, luxury spaceflight experience company Space Perspective completed the first test flight for ‘Neptune One’, a full-size capsule simulator powered by a space balloon.  The shuttle carried the ‘Living Light’ artwork to above 99% of the Earth’s atmosphere.  During the journey, the movement triggered color and light shifts within the iridescent and fluorescent materials of the piece.  The changes that occurred – both internally and externally – not only made the vessel appear lifelike, but also alluded to the transformational experiences of spaceflight.  ‘Living Light’ ventured to a new world to return transformed, offering a new perspective of Earth.  For both teams at beyond Earth and Space Perspective, this whole experience serves as a metaphor for bringing humankind to space, as well as a celebration of the dawn of commercial space travel.

Benjaman Kyle’s Million Dot Drawing

A A A

Miguel Endara is a great atrist known for his incredibly realistic dot drawings. One of his art works – a portrait of Benjamin Kyle – is an attempt to support a man who can not get the help from the state. Benjamin Kyle now on the lips of Americans, eight years ago a man was found unconscious behind a Burger King dumpster with no belongings, no ID and no memory of who he was. At the hospital, the poor man adopted the name Benjaman Kyle, since he was unable to remember anything about his past life.

Kyle, suffering from retrograde amnesia, still has no memory of his former life. To complicate matters even further, Kyle is currently unable to receive a new social security number because of his peculiar situation, and is thus unable to get a job or register at a homeless shelter. Artist Miguel Endara was one of many citizens who, after hearing Kyle’s story, wanted to help. Miguel used his incredibly painstaking stippling technique to create a lifelike portrait of Kyle in 138 hours. The final product contained 2.1 million dots, each applied one by one at an average of 4.25 dots per second. Endara was determined to raise awareness surrounding Kyle’s unimaginable tale. Through selling prints of the work for $90 each, Endara will donate half the proceeds to help his subject. But you don’t have to be an expert photorealistic artist to contribute; an online petition is currently circulating to grant Kyle a social security number and help him begin his new life.

25 Thought-Provoking Questions Through Pictures.

At the cusp of a new day, week, month, or year, most of us take a little time to reflect on our lives by looking back over the past and ahead into the future.  We ponder the successes, failures and standout events that are slowly scripting our life’s story.  This process of self reflection helps us maintain a conscious awareness of where we’ve been and where we intend to go.  It is pertinent to the organization and preservation of our dreams, goals and desires.

“Remember, these questions have no right or wrong answers.  Because asking the right questions is the answer.”

Underwater Photo, Or Baroque Painting?

With all of her effects created in-camera using the refraction of light and movement in different depths of water, Christy Lee Rogers creates pictures that look like Baroque paintings without the help of Photoshop. Her obsession with water as a medium coupled with her dedication to photography as an artistic medium, makes her work truly stand out.  Her subjects are wrapped in fabric, bathing in darkness. The water allows the bodies and fabric to move slowly and fluidly. Rogers shoots in swimming pools at night and her sessions can last two to four hours. The night’s natural darkness helps her achieve the black background she needs to surround her subjects in.

In this latest collection she calls Odyssey, Rogers explores such grand themes as birth, life and death. “The story of Odyssey exists in clumps of ideas and energy, griping emotions and the simplicity of truth beyond words,” she explains to us. “Like Homer’s epic Odyssey, life is an exciting and tumultuous adventure filled with thrilling characters to meet along the way. But metaphorically, Odyssey is a much bigger story than that, where the attributes and abilities of mankind soar to an unseen, indescribable level.”  More than anything, Rogers wanted to impart a sense of wonder and tranquility, to provide a bit of solace from our hectic, everyday lives. In addition she says, “The work of an artist lies in manifesting their inner world externally, so you are also experiencing my quest for the answers to life and the knowledge that’s contained in and around it.”

The Real Life Ninja Turtles?

What if Shredder, Splinter, Rocksteady and Bebop were real? What if the toxic ooze that created the 90’s action film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles spilled into the sewers today? The results would probably look a lot like the pictures above.  Now for a confession, before this post, only my immediate family knew that I had an unhealthy obsession with the Ninja Turtles.  TMNT backpacks, jackets, umbrellas, bed sheets, from the years of 3 to 5, I was all about it.  So when I saw the works of artist Dave Rapoza, it hit close to home.  Rapoza has updated the TMNT, and given them all a brand new real-life look. Even the creepy little fly villain, Baxter, from the cartoon got a makeover.  Each new piece is both gorgeous and horrifying at the same time.  And although there are no pics of the star turtles themselves, it definitely makes me yearn for the old days of the Foot Clan.

Hello From Earth.

Any consistent readers know that I’m a self-proclaimed nerd,  but some news running through the scientific community over the last week really got me excited.  (Be warned, it’s about to get REAL scientific in this b*tch).  Apparently for the first time in human history, we have identified a planet 20 light years away that could be capable of supporting life, complex/intelligent life, and possibly even human life.  The name of the planet (for now) is Gliese 581 D.  Check the article below.

An Earth-like planet spotted outside our solar system is the first found that could support liquid water and harbor life, scientists announced recently.  Liquid water is a key ingredient for life as we know it. The newfound planet is located at the “Goldilocks” distance-not too close and not too far from its star to keep water on its surface from freezing or vaporizing away.  And while astronomers are not yet able to look for signs of biology on the planet, the discovery is a milestone in planet detection and the search for extraterrestrial life, one with the potential to profoundly change our outlook on the universe.

Imagine life from the surface of this planet – its sun, being one third the size of our Sun and 50 times fainter – would be a dull, red glow in the sky. Under a deep, possibly planet-encompassing ocean, thick layers of ice surround the planet’s rocky centre.   It’s the “first serious waterworld candidate”, according to astronomer and exoplanet hunter Stephane Udry, from the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland, who was part of the team that discovered the planet in April 2007.

The habitability of this distant, possible waterworld depends on the composition and presence of an atmosphere. A Venus-like atmosphere, with a runaway greenhouse effect, could boil water away, whereas a thin, Mars-style atmosphere would see ice sublimate into vapor.

Gliese 581d orbits its sun every 66.8 days at about one fifth of the distance from the Earth to the Sun (0.22 astronomical units, or AU), closer than initial estimates and firmly within the star’s habitable zone according to a study published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics in April 2009.

The Human Planet.

It shouldn’t be any kind of secret and that I get my nerd on pretty often, but I was suprised to know a few of my close comrades were just as excited as I was to watch the preview for a new BBC special titled ‘Human Planet’. The BBC and its affiliates are the same folks responsible for bringing the specials ‘Life’ and ‘Planet Earth’ to TV screens and DVD players all over the place. This mini series however doesn’t focus on the strange, unseen world of the animal kingdom, but it focuses on foreign cultues that are rarely seen, observed or documented, which makes the ads for ‘Human Planet’ extremely intriguing. Check the method below to see more.
