Blending Iconic Faces From The Past And Present

Then and Now is a powerful collection of mash-ups by photographer and graphic designer Marc Ghali. In the series, the Canada-based photographer creatively blends old black and white photographs with sections of colorful, modern images. He perfectly arranges the new and old fragments so that, upon quick glance, viewers might believe they are looking at just one subject. However, each compilation features two faces representing the past and the present.

The subjects are often related in regards to professions, ranging from singers and actors to historical leaders. Some of the mash-ups include Rihanna and Diana Ross, Brad Pitt and James Dean, and two British princesses, Kate and Diana. It appears that Ghali really has an eye for matching faces as the many similarities are quite striking. The artist says, “I wanted to do something fun creatively. I was inspired by a series [by George Chamoun] called Iconatomy, and wanted to draw on parallels between influential figures pasts and present in an interpretative way.” It’s certainly fascinating to see how the world really hasn’t changed much across so many decades of time.

Alexander Khokhlov is a Russian photographer who loves to use the human face as his canvas for creating graphic, black and white face painting with makeup. From the WiFi icon to the pop icon, Mickey Mouse, or a QRcode across his model’s faces, Khokhlov’s project is quite interesting. Rather than relying on canvas, paper, or any other synthetic material, Khokhlov relies on the beauty and lines of the feminine face to form this project.

Scotch Tape Photoseries

This is a photoseries called Scotch Tape by photographer Wes Naman. With the help of his assistant Joy Godfrey, the models’ faces are manipulated using Scotch tape. There’s a lot of squished noses and lips, stretched eyebrows, and smashed faces.

Pumpkin Carvings by Ray Villafane

All featured art work were created by sculptor Ray Villafane, who uses common clay carving tools to create terrifyingly cool carved pumpkins with faces.  As an art teacher in high school, Ray was asked to carve a pumpkin for the upcoming Halloween. He decided to look at it as working with his well-known clay, instead of a big vegetable. As the kids loved the result, they started bringing him more and more pumpkins to carve, and Ray started getting even more creative with them.
