A special one-off ‘Bolt Gold’ edition of Nissan’s flagship supercar has fetched nearly double the list price at auction. The car, complete with unique gold paint job and Usain Bolt interior gold plaque bearing the 100 meters star’s autograph, was the star lot of an auction that also included items of Usain Bolt merchandise such as racing helmets, special driving suits and boots, all of which helped to nudge the overall total up to $193,191. The auction, in aid of the six-time gold medal winner’s charitable organization — The Usain Bolt Foundation — saw fierce competition from bidders around the globe when it was launched on eBay Motors on November 22. As well as being one of the fastest and best-handling cars currently available, the Nissan GT-R is also one of the most technologically advanced vehicles on the road.
Each engine is built in a hermetically sealed chamber that enables ultra-high precision and ultra-low tolerance manufacturing techniques more common in Formula 1 and the aviation industry. Commenting on the money raised by the auction, Usain Bolt said:”My partnership with Nissan greatly benefits the work of my Foundation. This donation will help many kids get access to better facilities, play areas and educational materials in Jamaica.” The Olympic star has been working with Nissan since October 2012 when he was appointed the Japanese carmaker’s honorary “Director of Excitement” and is a brand spokesman for the company’s “What if _” global brand campaign.
The EVOS concept car introduces a new design direction for the global car manufacturer ford. Debuting at the 2011 frankfurt motor show, the vehicle is an interpretation of a fastback bodystyle design, featuring four gull-wing doors which open to reveal a four-seat layout. The concept offers a bold red driver’s seat and the vision of unprecedented driver interface. The two rear seat passengers host dedicated touch-screen displays to interact with the vehicle and individually adjustable sports seats. The concept’s technology experience embraces a new generation of driver interaction and awareness, in which the seamless connectivity between the vehicle and the driver’s ‘personal cloud’ of information is the heart of the vision for its capabilities.
With information from the cloud, the vehicle is able to provide the same connected lifestyle the driver experiences at home or the office. The car knows the driver, automatically adapting its handling, steering and engine control to deliver a dynamic driving experience. Drawing from a detailed understanding of the driver’s preferences and habits, the EVOS concept car combines this personal information with additional data from the could, such as the individual’s work schedule and local traffic or weather conditions. This information provides a personalized and seamless sophistication as the driver transitions in and out of the car.
The Japanese word RIN means an appearance that is stunning, elegant and courageous. The idea is to create a new type of chair that is in harmony with Japanese and Danish design traditions. Designed by Hiromichi Konno, if nothing else, this chair has one of the best photographers I’ve ever seen.
Hiromichi Konno says:
“I wanted to make a beautiful chair that can stimulate and awaken emotions in people. It must be able to appeal visually but also make us feel a form of elegance when we sit in it. Therefore, I have established something poetical, simple, strong, relaxed and innovative all at the same time. The goal from the beginning was to create the perfect chair”

A long-awaited undersea hotel in Dubai looks finally set to be built, after an agreement to develop it was unveiled this week. The Water Discus Hotel won’t be totally submerged but will be a disc-like structure with part of the building above water and the rest below the surface. The 21 rooms will be submerged up to ten meters below the surface of the water, with huge windows offering a view out from the bed and an external ‘explorer’ robot which can be controlled from the room to allow guests to interact with marine life. According to Deep Ocean Technology, a restaurant, spa and reception area would be hosted above the waterline, with guests descending below the surface in glass-walled tunnels to get to their rooms.
As might be expected, the hotel would offer plenty of services for divers, with a training pool and other water sports offerings set to be available. The hotel will also include other amenities such as a spa, helipad, and an above ground terrace should guests feel a bit claustrophobic stuck inside The Discus. With no specific planned opening date, observers will be watching closely whether this plan comes any further than previous attempts to build underwater hotels in Dubai, which have stalled or quietly disappeared as the country faced economic ruin.
Gorden Wagener, the Head Designer at Mercedes-Benz, gives us an exclusive presentation of the Concept Style Coupé. The vehicle sports a futuristic look with innovative accents distinguished by the new headlight design, in particular. A moving blinker is just one of the highlights.
Here is a neat idea that allows you to play with the different faces for a watch. The Watch ‘oNe’ basically features an E-Ink display which is LED back lit, but its face is not constant, meaning you can change it at whim or fancy. Hook the watch up to the internet and download your kinda face to it. Designers have a choice to upload their creativity to the on-line store, for others to purchase.
So the possibilities with this one watch are endless… mechanical, digital, classic, futuristic, complex…any type of face can be downloaded (via micro USB port) for use. The physical watch can also be interchanged with different parts using a range of colors and materials. Constructed out of abs plastic, sapphire glass, stainless steel and fine leather; Watch ‘oNe’ is going on sale in March 2011 for $350.
The iPad can control all kinds of devices, from your Apple TV or remote desktop or AR.Drone, to slightly more bizarre things like a robotic prison guard. Given that, it was only a matter of time before someone used it as part of an overall badass project, like the Adastra Superyacht.
The $15 million Adastra Superyacht is a 139-foot-long yacht built by Hong Kong billionaire Anto Marden and yacht designer John Shuttleworth. The boat itself looks futuristic, but the coolest part is that you (or somebody) can control it using an iPad. With the iPad control system, someone can guide the yacht from up to 164 feet away.
I imagine it’s a bit like controlling a toy boat, only it’s friggin’ huge. The chassis of the 47-ton superyacht is made out of carbon fiber, with a glass and Kevlar foam sandwich hull. Adastra can travel at its optimum speed of 17 knots–which is around 20mph–for up to 4,000 miles.
While I don’t know much about what’s onboard yet, it would be interesting to see what other tech the boat uses. A fully automated wet bar, perhaps?
A few years ago, British engineering firm Atkins won the rights to design an extravagant hotel deep within a 100-metre pit in Shanghai‘s Songjiang District. Construction on the Intercontinental Shimao Shanghai Wonderland finally commenced last month, and the hotel is scheduled to open in early 2015.
The 19-storey structure will be grafted onto the side of the 100-meter pit, with 16 floors burrowing down towards the deep quarry floor. It will hold about 380 rooms which are expected to start at about $320 per night. The building will also feature an underwater restaurant.
A massive 60-meter tall glass curtain wall adjacent to the main structure will descend down the rockface in a manner that will “mimic a waterfall”, while the surrounding cliffs will be given over to bungee jumping and rockclimbing.
If you happen to think that your Ford GT Mustang is a little boring, look no further. After seeing these photos provided by Autoblog we were pretty much cleaning up our own drool. Reifen Koch slaps the car with a facelift using the Cervini body kits which leaves the Mustang looking amazing. The “Konquistador” package also includes a side-exit exhaust system, a full KW coilover kit and a hydraulic axle-lift system. Check out the whole press release at Autoblog if you’d like, if not enjoy the photos below. I just want to know what my homie Yum Yum thinks of this…
Ferrari has recently released a new video with the F12 Berlinetta hitting the track, after the supercar was officially presented to the public at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.
The newest supercar in Ferrari’s lineup, the F12 Berlinetta, 599 GTB’s successor is once again placed into the spotlights, and after the automaker showed us just a day before how the model came to life, this time the F12 Berlinetta is going around the track, proving its skills, its racing pedigree and revealing that wonderful engine sound.
The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, which is the fastest ever road-going car made by the company, is powered by a 6.3 liter V12 engine, developing a total output of 730 horsepower and 509 lb-ft of torque, out of which 80 percent is available from only 2,500 rpm. Ferrari says that the F12 Berlinetta can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.1 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 8.5 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 340 km/h.
According to the Italian based automaker, the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta is a result of the collaboration between Ferrari Styling Centre and Pininfarina. More details on the newest Ferrari supercar will be announced close to its launch.
British manufacturer of super-luxury motor cars Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled the Phantom Series II at 2012 Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. The series II comprises Phantom Saloon, Phantom Drophead Coupe and Phantom Coupe featuring enhanced design, drivetrain and technology. The Phantom II features “significant improvements in design, drive-train and technology,” Rolls-Royce says. Phantom Series II family of cars are powered by V12 direct injection engine and mated to a new 8-speed automatic gearbox, while its rear differential enhance the driving dynamics. The interior gets a new sat-nav system with 3D maps and the new and larger 8.8-inch screen is connected to an improved camera system to aid maneuverability of the vast machine. Fuel consumption is said to be about 10 per cent better than the current 17mpg and CO2 emissions are reduced from 388 to 347g/km.
A luxurious on-ground villa, that offers to its residents the comfort, spaciousness and interior flexibility but yet immobile? Or a limited in space and wavering but at the same time capable of transferring you to any place you want yacht? That could always be the question faced by clients of the luxury leisure sector. Trying to address this issue while simultaneously implementing the know-how and craftsmanship of both companies, the Monaco-based yacht maker Wally and the luxury French brand Hermès, created WHY – a state-of the-art vessel, for which the idea of the hull was initially taken from a seismic vessel, and was redesigned and adapted to the needs of the sea. The outcome was a super-luxurious yacht which measures 58 meters long and 38 meters wide and can accommodate 12 guests and 20 crew members.
The interior of the yacht follows the high standards of the design companies and is fitted out with water resistant leather, whereas wood is used in most of the interior areas of the vessel. The total 3.400m² guest surface areas, is divided into three different levels containing all rooms that could be found in a luxury villa such as lounges, dining rooms, libraries and spa areas.
The yacht has been tested under various conditions and the outcome is that under unfavorable weather conditions it remains more stable than any other of its type, and when anchored it creates a flat surface behind it where swimmers feel as if they are in an Olympic-sized pool. Since the aim of the project is to create a boat that imitates the specifications of a luxury villa but also has the advantages of a boat, it also means that the vessel must be so stable so that the guests can engage in the same activities as they would on the ground. WHY’s ability to offer this, is probably proved by the fact that it carries around it a real jogging track inspired by coastal paths.
New in the Watchismo Vault collection, the $17,500 Devon Tread watches, which use a cunning system of belts and optical sensors to keep and display the time. No, I don’t have $17.5K to drop on something like this right this second, but if you asked me to imagine what a $17.5K watch should look like, it would be something much like this: “The exposed movement is a mesmerizing display of the patented interwoven system of conveyor belts. This series of belts includes critical elements that allow the optical recognition system to know every belt position at all times.”
Bugatti is set to unveil the most powerful roadster of all time at the 82nd International Geneva Motor Show at the beginning of March. With an increase in power up to 1,200 HP, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse has entered a new dimension of open-top driving. Optically aligned to the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which holds the current world speed record of 431 km/h, the Vitesse also impresses with its dynamic driving characteristics. Bugatti’s engineers have developed the current Grand Sport, with its 1,001 HP and 1,250 Nm, into an even more powerful vehicle. The Vitesse’s maximum torque is now an impressive 1,500 Nm. The increased power of the new roadster’s 16-cylinder engine is made possible by the four enlarged turbochargers and intercoolers. The chassis has also been modified to support the power increase.
Infiniti has announced further details of a major new sports car concept set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The Nissan-owned brand revealed February 3 that the model will be called ‘Emerg-E’, promising a low-emission, high-performance and high-technology car, with several firsts — and a new design direction for the brand. The concept will use a range extender drivetrain, meaning that it will contain an electric motor and a gas-powered generator, as opposed to Nissan’s proven 100 percent battery technology used by cars such as the Leaf.
It will also have the drivetrain mounted in a mid-ship package, between the two axles, which the firm says is a first and significantly helps the weight distribution to improve handling — a concept which could be transferred to future production models, assuming it tests well. The first partial photos of the model appear to show a low-slung form, with a two-seater cockpit and a shape which appears to have been at least partially inspired by the Infiniti Essence concept, revealed at Geneva in 2009. The Essence was designed to celebrate Infiniti’s 20th anniversary, and while there have been no noises from Nissan on whether the Emerg-E will hit production, the trend seems to indicate that Infiniti is working towards a very specific goal. The Geneva Motor Show runs March 8-18 in Geneva, Switzerland.
For those who have no idea what the hell ‘Batman Live’ is, its an all new theater production of Batman, that features a new story with all his classic villians. Will be worth your $200 for a ticket? Only time will tell, but what I heard yesterday is that the Dark Knight will be cruising the boards in a very plush ride. Indeed the Batmobile of Broadway (or more accurately of ‘Manchester’, from July onwards) is designed by the very man who designed the McLaren F1 road car and the Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren, on top of a number of F1 racing cars, Professor Gordon Murray. The same man that independently designed the Rocket, an ultra-lightweight, open cockpit roadster powered by a 1-litre motorcycle engine, which has an appearance similar to that of a 60′s era Grand Prix car.
Batman Live will tour arenas for the first time ever across the UK and Europe, beginning in summer 2011, and arriving in North America in August 2012. Opening in Manchester on 19 July 2011 and visiting Newcastle, Glasgow, Sheffield, Birmingham, London, Liverpool, Nottingham, Dublin and Belfast.
In days gone by, headphones were the size of half-a-head and blocked out the entire outside world. The audio was amazing but you sweated profusely because of the generous foam padding… And you looked idiotic. Through several mutations, we then ended up at the other extreme, with minuscule earbuds that nearly vanished in your ear — and you still looked dorky.
Now, we have moved on to “audio fashion wear” that combines the best of all worlds. Copenhagen’s AIAIAI with its design partners at Kilo has come up with stylish, light-weight Tracks Headphone Series that combines toned-down nostalgic looks with superior sound quality. A leather version of Tracks, in natural and black, is apparently in the works as well.
Nissan keeps adding more to its flagship GT-R sports car to help keep competing alongside its rivals. A new update for the 2012 model year in Europe pegs the engine output at an impressive 542-hp, over the previous year’s 530-hp number. Billed as a 2012 model year car overseas, this improvement, along with a slew of others, is expected to debut on a US-spec version for 2013. (US-Spec models will come officially rated at 545-hp).
Along with the improved engine output of 550 PS (542-hp) and 632 Nm (466 lb-ft), Nissan also claims improved efficiency and an enhanced transmission “feel” thanks to a new shift fork arm, a firmer flywheel housing bearing and a new differential oil.
A stiffer body structure now promises improved rigidity, while Nissan has also developed a new asymmetric suspension, with a stiffer spring rate on the left side and an imbalanced wheel load (when stationary), for right-hand drive versions. This new arrangement is designed to compensate for RHD models where the car is weighted to the right side thanks to both the location of the propeller shaft and the driver. In addition, Nissan has announced a new track version of the GT-R for right-hand drive markets, like Japan and the UK.
Two new Bentley Continental V8 models will be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on 9th January 2012. The new Continentals will come in GT coupe and GTC convertible versions with power from a turbocharged 4.0-liter eight-cylinder engine that puts out 500 hp. With a new 8-speed automatic transmission directing the power to the road, the V8 Continental will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than five seconds and have a top speed of more than 180 mph. No official details have been released on fuel economy and emission figures, but Bentley informs us there is a 40 percent reduction compared to the W12 model. Since the launch of the original GT in 2003, the W12-engined Continental range has gone from strength to strength with over 50,000 sales worldwide.
LG and fashion label Prada are collaborating for the third time to release the first LG Prada smartphone, the Prada phone by LG 3.0. The phone combines Prada’s style with LG’s innovative technology, including one of the biggest and brightest screens in the world with 4.3inch and 800-nit screen. Menus and the user interface are also influenced by Prada with black, grey and white menu and icons. The Prada Phone by LG 3.0 adopts LG’s “tri-dual” design meaning it has a dual-core 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM per core, bringing a total of 1GB. The 8 mega-pixel camera is a real highlight because it can record 1080p video at a smooth 30fps. The PRADA Phone also supports WiFi , 3G and Bluetooth. On-board memory weighs in at 8GB, which is upgradable through the use of microSD cards. The phone runs Android’s Gingerbread OS. It is planned that the handset will update to Ice Cream Sandwich in the future.
The first LG Prada, also known as LG KE850, was the world’s first mobile phone to use a touchscreen display. Dr. Jong-seok Park, CEO of LG Eletronics Mobile Communications Company, said, “Our working relationship with PRADA is unique in its longevity and success, something no other phone company and luxury brand have been able to replicate.” Designer labels attached to phones is not a novelty these days considering the Hugo Boss Samsung Galaxy Ace or the BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981 devices.
One look at this mysterious whip and your lead foot just starts twitching. The Firebreather is a 2011 Camaro re-tooled & restyled by American muscle car custom house, Classic Design Concepts. Originally the ‘breather was made for the forthcoming movie, Jinn. Now, CDC is making 50 of these supercharged, 600 horsepower monsters available to the public. Good luck getting on that list.
Luxury car maker Rolls-Royce has developed its first electric-powered vehicle, that goes up to 125 miles fully charged. The one-off Phantom 102EX has been touring the globe to gauge the reactions of Rolls-Royce owners and potential customers to a fully electric-powered car. The 6.75-liter V-12 was replaced by a massive 71-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery housed within the aluminum spaceframe.
“We have engineered the world’s first battery electric vehicle for the ultra-luxury segment,” chief executive Torsten Muller-Otvos said in a statement. “We begin an exploration into alternative drive-trains, seeking clarity on which alternative technologies may be suitable to drive Rolls-Royce cars of the future.” The company wants to ascertain how long the car can drive between re-charges and how it operates in extreme weather conditions, but there are no plans yet to develop a production version.
“I must be convinced that any alternative drive-train we choose for the future delivers an authentic Rolls-Royce experience,” Muller-Otvos said. “It must be a technology that is right for our customers, our brand and which sets us on a sound footing for a sustainable future.”
