Chinese Coin House in Santa Cruz

general 01 02 03 04 05 06

Juan Carlos Menacho Durán has designed the Chinese Coin House in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. “The sky is round and the earth is square. The supreme manifestation of the universal dialectic is the sky and earth, paired as a couple. In between both, lies man. This house inspires security and balance through its square form. Immersed in a round base, it inspires creativity and harmony from the sky. These two shapes -sky and earth- are present in the Chinese coin. The main shape of the Chinese Coin House relates to prosperity.”

Cape Town-based architects SAOTA completed this architectural gem. Head Road 1815 was designed for a young couple, wanting a dynamic and striking home, primarily for themselves, with guest accommodation separated from their own living areas. The luxury property can be found in Fresnaye, Cape Town, South Africa. The luxury Cape Town property views towards the north and west over Fresnaye as well as at the rear of the site. The site falls very steeply and due to the high elevation of the road and the restrictions on the building form, the house is raised above the property on high columns. The house includes three-storeys accommodating three en-suite guest rooms on the ground floor, with a plant area and a staff flatlet at the rear. The first floor is the main living level, with a large living room and dining room opening to a covered and uncovered pool terrace. The kitchen is positioned to enjoy views through the glass roof towards Lion’s Head. The entrance hall is accessed by gentle steps from Head Road preceded by a glass-roofed external lobby space. The second floor accommodates the master bedroom, dressing room and a light-filled en-suite with views over the pool below.

Contemporary design at the harmonious Brighton Escape, Australia

Contemporary-Architecture-Design-Brighton-03-910x910 Contemporary-Architecture-Design-Brighton-01-910x910 Contemporary-Architecture-Design-Brighton-00 Contemporary-Architecture-Design-Brighton-02

Australian interior design practice G.A.B.B.E have completed the renovation of the Brighton Escape project. The expansive, serene and textured luxury family home can be found in Australia. According to the interior designers: “A contemporary design with resounding vibrations to sooth the urban family. Like a seashell carrying the sound of the ocean, or a mirror reflecting sunlight, this space was specifically fashioned to capture and exude the warmth of the environment which surrounds it.”

Contemporary-Architecture-Design-Brighton-05 Contemporary-Architecture-Design-Brighton-06

The space was treated from its genesis, with the same respect for design as a museum. Carving of ceiling, walls and floor not only creates sculptural partitions throughout the residence, but with the spirit of a rock pool, provides channels to flow through and delineates ample space in which to dwell together. The space also lends opportunity for personalisation to the clients aesthetics and lifestyle through decorative items and furnishings. The result is a harmonious sanctuary that stands as a finished work of art on its own, and is yet constantly evolving with its inhabitants.

House Tati with dramatic views, Johannesburg

Luxury-Property-Design-South-Africa_07 Luxury-Property-Design-South-Africa_03 Luxury-Property-Design-South-Africa_01Luxury-Property-Design-South-Africa_02

Johannesburg-based architectural practice Nico van der Meulen Architects have completed the House Tati project, a contemporary five-storey home that was finished in 2011, and can be found in Bassonia, Johannesburg, South Africa. The luxury South African property was redesigned and ingeniously transformed into a contemporary home. The building is located on a very steep and narrow site with 180° views to the east, which allowed the architectural design to take advantage of the spectacular views, but acted as a challenge when the architects wanted to add habitable space. The contemporary makeover was given to the entire building: from the street to the east façade one can enjoy the modern feel thanks to the use of concrete, steel and glass.

Luxury-Property-Design-South-Africa_05 Luxury-Property-Design-South-Africa_06

Sun control became key element of the design and the main architectural feature, since the building is mostly facing east. The northern and western façades are screened by the use of vertical louvres to allow sun control and degrees of privacy from adjacent properties. Northern sunlight enters the interiors through new double-volume glazing in the main staircase shaft, while pipe pendant lights from renowned designer Tom Dixon add a touch of luxury and visually connect the volume with the staircase below. The entertainment area and the children rooms are situated one floor lower, at the 3rd level. Here there is a private TV home theatre, a covered terrace with the pool deck, and the main suite on a mezzanine level. Finally, on the ground floor one finds a gym, home spa, hobby room and the squash court as well as a wine cellar and tasting room. The architectural style is complemented by the contemporary interior design, which was developed taking into account the ambience of a city pad with the main focus turned to the views.

Contemporary private Palm Beach property, Sydney

Contemporary-Property-Australia-01 Contemporary-Property-Australia-00 Contemporary-Property-Australia-02 Contemporary-Property-Australia-03-910x910

Australian interior designers and architects Pike Withers Interior Architecture have designed a stunning residential property in Palm Beach, Sydney, Australia. According to the architects:

The client had visited our recent project, the exclusive Qualia resort on Hamilton Island and wanted us to bring this resort feel into his beach house. He wanted a laid back feel that was intrinsically calming. A particular request was ‘to be able to sit on the view’. This required an extensive re-think to the planning of the whole house. The kitchen and living areas were completely re-planned to create larger spaces that flowed seamlessly into one another. Balconies were extended and an automated sliding roof was installed over the living area to allow the house to literally ‘open up’. It was important for us to maintain an Australian feel and avoid the Bali cliché’s in producing a resort aesthetic. Although the aim was to have open spaces that were more communal and social this needed to be balanced with quieter spaces. The use of built in banquettes throughout the contemporary Australian house created intimate spaces to sit and escape or soak up the view. A particular innovation was the installation of the retractable roof that spanned over the whole living area.As the project was a refurbishment, there was always a carefully considered approach to what we could re-use. The bones of the house were good, so nothing was demolished without justification. Some of the elements from the existing house, such as some large timber beams were re-used into the landscaping. There was also an emphasis on improving the amenity of the contemporary house. The building changes meant that ventilation and light penetration were improved greatly. The use of custom made sliding timber and glass louvered screens meant that these elements could be controlled and flexible and therefore prevented a drain on artificial heating/cooling and lighting.

Ong and Ong Pte’s Modern House in Singapore

1250632170blairrd01 1250632209blairrd03 1250632248blairrd07

Designed by architects Ong & Ong Pte, this modern house in Singapore is meant to give you “a spatial experience that excites the senses by promoting light.” The architects sought to create a relationship between the metallic elements and subtle tones within the house by wrapping aluminum cladding in the air well. This air well divided the two sections of the house and became the perfect place for an indoor/outdoor swimming pool. The coolest part, of course, is that you can open up the glazed partitions of the house so that the first floor becomes one large living space. The ground floor, then, is not only a lounge and dinning area, it is an ideal place to relax and sit poolside, a place to sip margaritas and soak in the rays.

Contemporary JPGN Residence, Brazil

Contemporary-Property-Design-Brazil-10 Contemporary-Property-Design-Brazil-11

Brazilian architectural practice Danilo Matoso Macedo have completed the JPGN project. Completed in 2012, the contemporary property belongs to a young couple in Brasília, Brazil. This contemporary Brazilian property looks onto Lake Paranoá, with the monumental area of the city on the opposite bank. According to the architect: “The contemporary house was almost fully elevated on stilts at the edge of the height permitted by law, allowing the desired view over the roofs of the neighbours. The property belongs to a young couple without children, the basic programme (room, office, bedroom, kitchen and service area) was distributed only at the top level, facilitating rapid paths everyday, more frequent when children are small. The indoors were arranged to prioritise the vision of the landscape, now converted into a central motif of the project – reverence complemented by a ‘panoramic deck’ provisions freely on the cover slab.

Contemporary-Property-Design-Brazil-08 In order to avoid the ceiling topping due to elevation of the main block, the ground floor was treated with staggered landfills. The garage is an intermediate level, along with a service equipped with hoists and installing temporary employee in order to hide the vehicles for users from the balcony above. A small two-bedroom flat was designed for future occupation of stilts, second family life, in which the children would demand more independence – Early prediction of execution by the client in the first moment of the work, providing functional autonomy to the area leisure and allowing its use for any guest. It opens directly to the view the room, the office, and the double bedroom – mediated by a balcony – and indirectly the kitchen connected to the dining room for large sliding panels. The integration between these two environments is enhanced by continuous bench, topped by a set of adjoining cabinets and windows that open yet frontal view of the street.

Skrillex And The Doors – Breakn’ A Sweat

“Breakn’ a Sweat” is a song by American electronic music producer Skrillex. It is the third track on his fourth EP, Bangarang. It features guest vocal and musical contributions from the American rock band The Doors. It was created for the 2012 documentary film Re:Generation. Musically, “Breakn’ a Sweat” has heavy influences of dubstep, electro house and progressive house. It contains a vocal sample from a 1960s interview with Jim Morrison, while the remaining members of The Doors and Skrillex did the chants. The song received generally positive reviews from music critics, with some highlighting it as the standout track from the EP.

Gorki House in Moscow

Gorki House was designed by Atrium and is integrated in a beautiful natural environment atop of a hill west of Moscow. The architects were commissioned to design a contemporary residence for a young couple and their kid, while maintaining a good relationship with the surrounding pine forest landscape. The building features generous windows and a large number of terraces which make it connect well with the outdoors. Its shape is highly original, consisting of a clever and appealing game of volumes which seem to gradually unfold. According to Arch Daily, the interior design follows the “patterns” of the exterior, as “public zones flow into private areas and vice-versa”. The rooms are airy and spacious, featuring contemporary furniture arrangements and inspiring decorative details.

Edge House by STARH Stanislavov Architects

Interesting concept house “Edge House”  was created by Bulgarian firm STARH Stanislavov Architects. It’s a single family dwelling located in the densely vegetated suburbia of Varna, next to the sea. The residence’s peculiar plan, reminiscent of a conch shell, ends in a southern-facing full-height curtain wall orienting all programmatic elements towards the sea.

Luxury Abbots Way Property, Southampton, England

UK-based design practice and RIBA award-winning AR Design Studio has completed another stunning property on the south coast of England. Boarded by mature trees and a lake it is perfect setting for ultimate relaxation and privacy. The five-bedroom house, whilst contemporary, juxtaposes superbly with its tranquil location. The whole look and feel of this luxury English property is very liner and areas are clearly defined by defined by timber paths and large stone walls that begin in the gardens and run straight through the house. The walls link to a further separate office and gym space at the bottom of the garden. These dividing walls create four separate garden experiences, an entrance space, a calm pebbled Japanese herb garden, a private enclosed wooded space dedicated to the kitchen and master bedroom above and a large open expanse of tropical plants and lawn reaching down to the lake, reflecting the open plan living space that looks over it. The upper sleeping floor of the contemporary English property is sat on top of the walls appearing to float above the lower floor. There are five bedrooms, all with large glazed areas, providing beautiful tree top views of the lake and surrounding woodland, creating a sense of being amongst the tree canopy whilst lying in bed. The ground floor living areas, nestled under the sleeping box are enclosed with large sliding glazed panels that provide a seamless link between the internal and external. The terrace further accentuates this, with the use of a single style of floor tile inside, that extends outside through flush thresholds to really give a true sense of ‘inside/outside living’. The house is surrounded by a moat providing a metaphoric sense of security between the outside world and the inner sanctum. Crossing it via a bridge to access the front door, enables the owners to psychologically leave the outside world behind and enter into their own retreat. The unique kitchen has two distinct sections; the main front of house ‘display’ kitchen  that is perfect for cooking, entertaining and socializing, and the more functional back of house ‘hidden’ kitchen for the sink, dishwasher and washing machine.  These two areas are beautifully separated by invisible kitchen doors which disappear within the kitchen furniture when closed and create the connection between both spaces when open. This bespoke contemporary kitchen, with furniture from the iconic German kitchen company SieMatic and Gaggenau appliances, was designed and installed by Hampshire’s leading kitchen and interior architecture specialist, The Myers Touch. The palette of materials used is modest and understated. White and grey render adorn the floating box. Natural stone, inspired by local 12th-century abbey that sets the vernacular for the area, is used for the walls that dominate the ground floor providing rugged contrast. Dark floor tiles inside and out make the experience of the house, that of calm play between light and space without boundaries. The luxury English house is super insulated to create a highly energy efficient home, with under floor heating providing warmth and large overhangs to reduce solar gain in the summer months while allowing passive solar heating in the winter.

The Australian Winter Cabin.

Australia is a land more often associated with sun and surf not winter and snow, but in the high country of Victoria and the resort village of Dinner Plain, there’s a house that brings winter to life.  Welcome to ‘Under the Moonlight’ designed by Giovanni D’Ambrosio. It’s a contemporary (and expensive) take on the traditional cattlemen’s huts of the area.

“Perched on the edge of an alpine reserve in Dinner Plain Village, part of the highest approved freehold land in Australia, the home is located just 10 minutes from down hill skiing at Mount Hotham. Featuring extensive 8 x 9 sq metre glass panels, sweeping alpine views are drawn in to the interior of the home, which also features a 20 tonne cantilevered fire place made of local stone.”

Forget the stone fireplace look at the bathroom! A divan perched beside the spa. Dark and decadent. This is definitely a bachelor’s pad in the snow, no? A sexy private après-ski lair. Glühwein anyone?

Dupli Casa By J.Mayer H.

This clean gorgeous house called Dupli Casa that was originally built in 1984. Over the years it has had many extensions and modifications. The new building echoes the “family archeology” by duplication and rotation. Lifted up, it creates a semi-public space on ground level between two layers of discretion. The spatial configuration of the villa performs a sophisticated connection between inside and outside and offers spectacular views onto the old town of Marbach and the German national literature archive on the other side of the Neckar valley.

The River House.

This rustic retreat was built right in the heart of Three Rivers, California near the entrance to Sequoia National Park where the enchantment of wildlife sightings runs wild. What also happens to run wild is the river that flows under this home, something that has never been done before or ever since.  Kaweah Falls was originally designed in the 1940′s by one of Frank Wright’s very own students, but when the second homeowners moved in and remodeled they decided to add an addition to the home that floats over the river bank.

Aside from a few cool interior features like a dining room with a glass floor view of the river, there is a footbridge over these waters that lead to a private deck where one can sit and listen to the sounds of fresh water skimming river rocks on the way down from a waterfall found right up the mountain. Choosing a vacation spot for these homeowners is definitely a tall order…but who would want to leave this place?

Ice Cube Celebrates The Eames.

Ice Cube Celebrates The Eames for Pacific Standard Time the birth of the LA art scene. As he drives Inglewood blvd. describing the Los Angeles that he knows, he talks of landmarks like The Forum, Five Torches, Cockatoo Inn, Brolly Hut, and Watts Towers. He refers to the 110 as “Gangsta Highway”. Cube says coming from South Central LA teaches you how to be resourceful. He walks the Eames House perimeter, through the Eames living room, and sitting in the Eames lounge chair. He brings us back to his NWA years when he studied architectural drafting before launching his rap career. One thing he learned that translates is to always have a plan. Cube describes the modern, green and resourceful building design of Charles and Ray Eames. Visionaries of connecting nature and structure. “Who are these people who got a problem with LA? Maybe they mad cuz they don’t live here.”

The ‘Contour’ Machine That Can Print A House.

Amazing advancements have been made in 3D-printing technology, but designer Sebastian Bertram has taken it a step further, expanding the capabilities of 3D printing to large-scale 3D building. The Contour Crafter aims to keep up with demand for housing in urban areas with a construction method that combines industrial production and the technique of rapid prototyping. The robot “prints” contours of a building shell layer by layer using fast-drying concrete. Within just a couple of weeks, an entire estate could be produced.

Jeff Phantom & DJ Storm – Swerve.

Click the pic to download.

On an average of about once a month, DJ Jeff Phantom and I got together since February to put out some podcast mixes that started with Project X, and are now culminating in the 30 minute mix session titled ‘Swerve’.  With it being half Hip Hop, and half Electro/House/Dubstep, tons of ideas, mashups, and remixed were thrown around during the early phase of putting things together, but in the end we felt it was just best to just rock live on the turn tables for about 15 minutes each.  Click the player below to listen, and we hope you enjoy.

Modern Italian Architecture

This modern italian architecture known as ‘Wohnhaus Pircher, Planit C’ is a single family residence positioned amidst a scenic landscape near the italian-austrian border in Toblach, Italy. The south facing terraces and promenades line the roof to offer panoramic vistas of the mountains blanketed with trees. Staggered volumes arranged around a central courtyard allow natural daylight to permeate into the sub-grade wellness and fitness spaces. The entry floor contains a work room and a living area and the kitchen and dining room are elevated, accessed by a stair which wraps around the glass encased open-air atrium.
