merc_tron2 merc_tron merc_tron3

This is a design exercise that pays homage to Mercedes-Benz’s racing history. The streamlined body is supposed to evoke airplanes, speed and movement. Designer Peter Vardai’s goal was to create a plan that reinforces the emotions toward Mercedes and refers the the brand’s tradition and future. His concept consisted of the feeling for speed and freedom. He wanted to represent the speed and motion in on subject by basing this project on an airplane’s dinamic and streamlined shape [while having a Tron like future feel to it]. The black and silver are strongly connected to the branding, while the sporty shape refers to the Mercede’s success in auto racing.

60% of Cars Will Be Connected By 2017.

In five years the connected car will become a mainstream reality with more than 60 percent of the world’s cars offering features such as built-in internet, wireless connectivity and smart notifications. By 2017 market researcher ABI expects the figure to exceed 80 percent in the US and Western Europe as new cars get pumped full of smarter technology. Developing regions such as Latin America and Eastern Europe will also see a large jump in the number of new vehicles with telematics; Brazil and Russia will lead the trend, driven by country-specific mandates. “In-car connectivity is quickly transforming the automotive industry, enabling passive and active safety and security and offering infotainment and connected lifestyle services to consumers but also enabling new car ownership, usage, and experience modes such as car sharing, (semi)-autonomous driving, dynamic demand-response electric vehicle charging pricing, and customer and vehicle relationship management services including prognostics and preventive maintenance,” said ABI VP and practice director Dominique Bonte. Car companies such as Ford, Toyota, Lexus, Audi and BMW are not the only ones developing connected cars of the future.

Smart Media Shower.

The ‘Le Terme’ is a stainless steel structure that features antibacterial cypress wood base and OLED interactive glass panels. The bathroom concept was created by Fei Chung Billy Ho. This luxury room of pleasure integrates smart media device into the shower room featuring display panels that sync with any in-house smart phone or tablet. Essentially it allows you to view and your favorite music and videos and make direct phone calls from the booth. Classically designed water control stem uses a see-through channel and surrounding illuminations to create a relaxed setting. The antibacterial cypress wood base, with surround drainage system, naturally kills bacteria, viruses, viral infections and fungus – helping to maintain the hygiene level, temperature and humidity of the base area.

The Immersive Cocoon Display.

The world of interfaces continues to evolve and surprise us. We still think of it as something we can hold, fold and place in our bag to carry anywhere. What if you can be part of an intuitive and holistic experience where your interface is not reduced to a mouse-click or a two dimensional tablet screen. Welcome to the Immersive Cocoon, a surround display dome with sophisticated motion sensor technology that inspired  the technology depicted in ‘Minority Report’. Now your body becomes the interface, as you are enveloped and your body movement becomes part of this digital environment to make our everyday lives more enjoyable, at least that is what this conceptual project tries to explore.

The Immersive Cocoon opens its hatch silently and extends a small set of stairs that helps you move into this 360 degree display covering the entire interior walls. Inside you can sit, lean, and accommodate an adjustable work surface depending on how your imagination desires to utilize the Cocoon. You can connect into a virtual meeting across the globe, do yoga while at the airport or even visit a preserved temple in Tibet right from home, mall, or anywhere else this product will be located. I am not going to lie, I would like this in my job as I would not mind having lunch on the coast of a Greek island at least twice a week.

The Cocoon’s potential extends beyond leisure and into education, productivity, training and other uses that would benefit from this immersive technology. This spherical pod seems to show promise in many levels but the question always become its financial feasibility and social acceptance. Although innovative, something this ground breaking seems to have a hard time being implemented in public spaces. Seeing the roll out of this technology will be interesting and full of insight as more people interact with it. We can guarantee that it doesn’t lack thought and ingenuity as its 3D motion tracking system was developed by John Underkoffer, a former fellow of the MIT Media Lab. This conceptual prototype developed by NAU out of Zurich, Switzerland, shows immense opportunities into future daily and exclusive activities. What will be the price we pay financially, socially and psychologically? Maybe it will not be hard to adopt after all as we are really used to seeing this kind of innovation on the big screen.

The Ford EVOS.

The EVOS concept car introduces a new design direction for the global car manufacturer ford.  Debuting at the 2011 frankfurt motor show, the vehicle is an interpretation of a fastback bodystyle design, featuring four gull-wing doors which open to reveal a four-seat layout.  The concept offers a bold red driver’s seat and the vision of unprecedented driver interface.  The two rear seat passengers host dedicated touch-screen displays to interact with the vehicle and individually adjustable sports seats.  The concept’s technology experience embraces a new generation of driver interaction and awareness, in which the seamless connectivity between the vehicle and the driver’s ‘personal cloud’ of information is the heart of the vision for its capabilities.

With information from the cloud, the vehicle is able to provide the same connected lifestyle the driver experiences at home or the office.  The car knows the driver, automatically adapting its handling, steering and engine control to deliver a dynamic driving experience.  Drawing from a detailed understanding of the driver’s preferences and habits, the EVOS concept car combines this personal information with additional data from the could, such as the individual’s work schedule and local traffic or weather conditions. This information provides a personalized and seamless  sophistication as the driver transitions in and out of the car.

The Safest Credit Card You’ll Ever See.

In my part of the world, Credit Card scams are an everyday occurrence. So the companies have gotten smart and allocate us a one-time-pin (OTP) for online shopping but still have to wise-up to forgery and misuse in the physical world. Safe Card is a protective option that allows you to use a Credit Card only after you unlock it with a password. Offering a second tier of security is the option to enter the exact amount to the card interface, so that only the specified amount is charged.  I just feel that you can’t be too safe with plastic money, heck I even have an opaque tape hiding my CVV number.

The ‘Contour’ Machine That Can Print A House.

Amazing advancements have been made in 3D-printing technology, but designer Sebastian Bertram has taken it a step further, expanding the capabilities of 3D printing to large-scale 3D building. The Contour Crafter aims to keep up with demand for housing in urban areas with a construction method that combines industrial production and the technique of rapid prototyping. The robot “prints” contours of a building shell layer by layer using fast-drying concrete. Within just a couple of weeks, an entire estate could be produced.
