World’s Biggest Sculpture To Be Built In Abu Dhabi

World-biggest-sculpture

Christo, the legendary public artist famous for his Wrapped Reichstag, plans to build the world’s largest sculpture out of oil drums in Abu Dhabi. “The Mastaba” is a pyramid-like structure made entirely from stacked, painted oil barrels, designed to tower above the sand dunes of the Gulf desert. It will take 30 months and hundreds of people to build the sculpture, which will be placed 100 miles outside Abu Dhabi in Al Gharbia. Although Christos said the idea for the sculpture was put together more than 30 years ago, conflict in the region prevented the piece from receiving approval. Christo is reportedly working with the crown prince’s elder brother, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al-Nayhan to built the project. If completed, the $340 million project will be the largest permanent structure in the world–and the priciest.

Allure Nightclub, Abu Dhabi Marina.

Standing out in Abu Dhabi takes more than clever gimmicks. Among the opulence of luxury hotels, lavish restaurants and all other forms of pampering and spectacular entertainment – including Ferrari World and a few breathtaking golf clubs – being merely great is nowhere near enough. The legendary Cipriani Group is one of the brave enterprises that has recently entered the competition for the attentions of the demanding super-elite clientele.  Cipriani’s nightclub, Allure, at the Yas Island Yacht Club on Yas Island, has a few features that warrant at least one extra bat of even the most worldly of eyelashes.  The night club’s location is one such feature. Allure overlooks the water and extravagant super yachts of the Yacht Club.

Although it is connected by a bridge to magnificent five-star The Yas Hotel, the most amazing part of the nightclub is the view. What you see from its balcony is a real Formula One™ race track.  Designed by Orbit Design Studio (Bangkok, London and Singapore), Allure is divided into The Main room adorned with gold leaf and bronze cladding, and The Terrace that overlooks the race track.  Orbit has also designed the Sound Phuket night club, the Bed Supperclub in Bangkok, and many other luxury bars, clubs and restaurants designers throughout Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

The Bus Of The Future?

Today’s buses have a reputation for being large, slow and — even when powered by electricity — rather inefficient.  However, this could all be about to change thanks to a pioneering design from a Dutch scientist which was shown last week in Amsterdam.  The “Superbus” is the work of the Delft University of Technology and Prof. Dr. Wubbo J Ockels, a Dutch physicist and astronaut, to provide a realistic alternative to cars.  The Superbus is fifteen meters long, but that’s where the similarities with a normal bus end — instead of the square shape and high roof of a traditional bus, the Superbus looks something like a stretched sports car.

This aerodynamic design enables it to carry 23 passengers at up to 250 km/h, far faster than normal coaches which normally travel at around 100 km/h on highways.  Remarkably, it achieves this using electricity and consumes as much energy as a regular bus traveling at 100km/h thanks to the use of lightweight materials provided by Aerospace engineering firm TenCate.  The entire structure is constructed of carbon fibre composite and uses ten doors instead of two to enable more seating space in the interior, where passengers can enjoy seat belts, airbags, TV, internet, air conditioning and heating.  Although the Superbus is still very much a concept, the team hopes that a version could be implemented by 2015, perhaps on a dedicated track that would enable it to reach its top speed of 250 km/h along sections of the route.  A video from the Delft University of Technology, which has been working on the concept, appears to show that the model could be used first in Abu Dhabi.
