The Triennale Design Museum, Milan

Contemporary-Architectural-Design-Milan-00

Milan-based architectural practice Studio Fabio Novembre have completed the Triennale Design Museum project. Completed in 2012 the stunning building can be found in Milan, Italy. According to the architects: “Protecting the arts and sciences in our times is no mean feat, so for this fifth edition of the Triennale Design Museum it has taken plenty of human endeavour alongside the intervention of the Muses.”  In agreement with the curators, the director originally opted for an authentic mythological figure to do the interior design of the spaces for this edition, Enzo Mari, who was forced to decline due to an indisposition, leaving it up to yours truly to take on this Herculean task. It involved exhibiting something absolutely new compared to previous editions, a selection of carefully chosen items confirming the theory that there is only one Italian school of graphics, even though it has no proper structure, hardly surprising since the same could be said about everything connected with our dear old unpredictable country.

Pool Party

a916b68ceed0e60d456f0eb843f9f036 0f5dac676f853e4d1f77e1dfce3192fa

Pools are not exactly the most projection ready surface, and initial brainstorms produced many more challenges than this team had anticipated. In researching a solution, they had to overcome the fact that projection doesn’t work on the surface of water, it becomes distorted if you project through it, and pool parties are notorious for more standing than swimming. Most people reacted as any any normal person would, and promptly put in and order for 65,000 ping pong balls, enough to cover the entire surface of the pool. To go with their new screen, they created an application which mapped to the pool and displayed a floating river of graphics, pulled by an invisible tide. Audio reactive visuals bumped along with the various dj’s and musical acts taking place poolside. The tactile quality of swimming through ping pong balls, combined with animated colors and light created an interactive event worth telling stories about.

Toyota i-Road Electric Personal Mobility Vehicle

07 08 09 10

At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show Toyota has introduced the i-ROAD – an electric personal mobility vehicle. Offering greater flexibility in an urban environment, the i-ROAD provides seating in tandem for two users in a pod-like enclosed environment. Its all-electric power-train features a lithium-ion battery – which provides power to a pair of 2 kW electric motors mounted within the front wheels. The EV provides unique, “active lean” technology for a safe, intuitive and enjoyable, helmet-free driving experience for over a range of up to 50 km on a single charge. The system features a lean actuator motor and gearing mounted above the front suspension member, linked via a yoke to the right and left front wheels. An ECU calculates the required lean based on steering angle, gyro-sensor and vehicle speed information. The “active lean” automatically moves the wheels up and down in opposite directions, applying lean angle to counteract the centrifugal force of cornering. Measuring 2,350 mm long and 850 mm wide, the compact three-wheeled PMV’s dimension also makes it possible to park four units in a single car parking bay and allows it to manoeuvre freely through congested traffic.

2014 Bentley Flying Spur

Picture 14 Picture 15

The second generation luxury sedan based on Bentley Continental is imminent. Bentley Continental Flying Spur appeared in 2005 as a response to the need for a smaller, more modern luxury sedan, the brand that would make sure increase in sales and a wider clientele. As the name (and design) told, it was a sedan, modeled on the Continental GT coupe. The public response was lukewarm. However, those for whom the vehicle was designed, i.e. rich customers who do not spend time on the internet discussions, obviously liked, because the brand is doing well and the Flying Spur is preparing a successor. The fact is that the promo video shows that the car will have a new column shaped body and the line of the side windows and the bow can expect similar changes which accompanied the alternation of generations in the Continental GT. Flying Spur will be powered by a 6.0L W12 capable of producing 616 hp, 590 lb-ft of torque, taking it to from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. The inside amenities and modern gadgetry will be as always Bentley delivers. But the highlights for the 2014 Flying Spur we’ve received are built-in hotspot, two 10” rear screens with 64Gigs of storage and 1100 watt Naim sound system. Expect to see it on roads in coming summer.

Torque Desk by I M Lab

01 02 03 04 05

London-based Alessandro Isola & Supriya Mankad from I M Lab have designed the Torque Desk.  A twisting take on a traditionally formal product. In this instance the desk has been transformed into a dynamic spatial object in tension with the straight walls of the space it occupies. The tensile stresses require the desk to be constructed in a malleable and ductile material. Bringing together clever engineering and hand craftsmanship, all the components of the metal body are structural as well as functional. The flat plane of the desk is folded to support itself at one end while seemingly resting on a stack of drawers at the other end. The rotating drawers are cantilevered around the spine which performs multiple functions of a support, a pivot and a cable management system connecting a floor point all the way up to the desk surface. An malachite letter and pen holder completes the design.

1963 Buick Riviera

01 02 06 03 05 04This is 1963 Buick Riviera with tuning by Fesler. The Scottsdsale, Arizona, dweller, co-owner and CEO of toymaker Ronin Syndicate, Tony Diaz, began his pursuit of the dark side a few years ago, combing the country for the perfect candidate for his evil mission. “I had been looking for a Riviera for a long time,” explains Tony. “I wanted it to look thug, but not modern-day thug—more like something from the ’30s,” proclaims Tony. “Like you would expect dudes with tommy guns to jump out of it.” Tony definitely had gangster goals, and thankfully his friend Chris Fesler was up for the task of making Tony’s dreams a reality. One of the most intriguing aspects of the rapacious Rivi is the exclusive yet abnormal rolling gear. With more than 3,000 watts of power going to the Kicker subwoofers and speakers, not only does it pound pavement, but it casts fear on anyone daring enough to peek inside.

Newton Console by Boca do Lobo

This strange cluster of glossy, black and gold spheres is an apple inspired table “Newton Console” by Tinto-based design company Boca do Lobo. The table is ideal for living rooms and hotel lobbies with a modern aesthetic. Made from aluminum and covered with a high-gloss varnish, the table reflects light and pretty much anything surrounding it crisply, adding an extra dimension to this baroque-à-la-mode console. “We design for surprise,” says Boca do Lobo’s CEO Amândio Pereira.

A delicate, floating circle of light, the Nimba 90 LED Suspension Light combines simplicity with advanced technology and high-efficiency. A stainless steel ring is illuminated by a series of LEDs, softened by a white inner diffuser. Suspended from a satin nickel canopy by subtle, nearly invisible cable, the Nimba seems to levitate just below the ceiling.

It’s easy to forget how much the comic stylings of the 60’s and 70’s have inspired modern films and just how timeless those two-dimensional, spandex-clad superheroes can be. This series replaces live action with the lines they were born from, interlacing cinematography with storyboard.

W Motor’s Super Car Design

W-Motors-Lykan-Hypersport-600x306 W-Motors-Lykan-Hypersport1

Lykan Hypersport supercar has exceeded all expectations when it came to demand. Especially when one considers the heavy $3.4 million dollars price tag. W Motors was planning on only building seven units of the Lykan Hypersport, but after the 2013 Qatar Motor Show unveiling, have received more than 100 orders. A 750hp mid-mounted twin turbo flat-six engine capable of achieving 0-100km/h times in 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 395km/h meant this car had very high ambitions from the start. Throw in the fact that it uses real diamonds and gold elements throughout the lighting components and interior.

3D printed Organs From Regenerative Living Cells

ears01

In the most recent medical development in artificial organ creation, a team of scientists and physicians from cornell university have engineered 3D printed life-like ears used to treat children born with a congenital deformity called microtia, or help individuals who have lost part or all of their external ear in an accident or from cancer. The artificial body tissue is made by processing additive gels found within living cells – with collagen derived from rat tails and cartilage taken from cow ears. The modelling process is digitized into an assemble-able human ear, where then high-density gel, similar to the consistency of jell-o is injected into a mold – resulting in flesh resembling that of a human-being. In the future, the engineers will look at new ways to develop populations of human ear cartilage cells from patients instead of cow cartilage, which would reduce any possibility of rejection.

Paper Display – Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair

pav3

Check out this Nike store display by the Finland-born, Amsterdam-based illustrator Kustaa Saksi before, but this time, it is his fantastical paper display at the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair. The intricate and delicate display from 1120 stacks of A4-size paper (total of 700,000 sheets of paper) suspended from 44,000 points in the ceiling. Ceiling frescoes, church domes, altars – these were all part of the inspiration for Saksi and Wingårdh who concluded that paper is still them most commonly used means of communication and therefore the perfect material for the display.

Contemporary design at the harmonious Brighton Escape, Australia

Australian interior design practice G.A.B.B.E have completed the renovation of the Brighton Escape project. The expansive, serene and textured luxury family home can be found in Australia. According to the interior designers: “A contemporary design with resounding vibrations to sooth the urban family. Like a seashell carrying the sound of the ocean, or a mirror reflecting sunlight, this space was specifically fashioned to capture and exude the warmth of the environment which surrounds it.”

Contemporary-Architecture-Design-Brighton-05 Contemporary-Architecture-Design-Brighton-06

The space was treated from its genesis, with the same respect for design as a museum. Carving of ceiling, walls and floor not only creates sculptural partitions throughout the residence, but with the spirit of a rock pool, provides channels to flow through and delineates ample space in which to dwell together. The space also lends opportunity for personalisation to the clients aesthetics and lifestyle through decorative items and furnishings. The result is a harmonious sanctuary that stands as a finished work of art on its own, and is yet constantly evolving with its inhabitants.
