Eminem ft. B.O.B. – Things Get Worse.

Click the pic to listen. (Courtesy of HHG)

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, I’m happen to be a tremendous Eminem fan, and have been since he first came out.  I’m well aware there was a period when he started to lose the “Slim Shady” that made him an undeniable force in the rap game, and I remember what that music used to sound like.  I’m super excited that he’s back in the game, and I was juiced when I heard about his new track with B.O.B., however when the song started, it just reminded me of when Em was losing his Shady so to speak… This lasted for about 13 seconds until Eminem blasted off on a lyrical tangent about Angelina J. giving head, and how Brat Pitt doesn’t can’t do anything about it.  After that, the song was all uphill from there, and truly reminded me of the ultra-witty rhyme-style Em had back in the day.  That in combination with B.O.B. gracing the track with his presence, this one is a sure thing for the repeat bin in my iPhone.

Lil B and Tony Yayo Get Based.

All of my close friends have a very unique sense of humor, and all though we’ve been around each other for years, sometimes I don’t understand it.  So when my brother Reggie and my barber Q continuously harp on the fact that Lil B is the greatest thing to come out since the condom, I wasn’t sure if they were serious or not.  After hearing about his collab with Tony Yayo, I’m pretty sure my boys aren’t the only ones who think Lil B is a force the music industry must recon with.  Check out the new video for “Based” with Lil B and Tony Yayo.

Lil Kim – Black Friday (Official Video)

We all know about the Nicki/Kim beef, and to be totally truthful, I was a bit sick of hearing about it… until however, I got a look at the “Black Friday” video.  I was surprised that Kim would go to such lengths to get the word out about her dislike for fellow femcee Nicki Minaj.  The video features Lil Kim, a Nick Minaj look alike, and a whole host of scenes that’s sure to get the attention of Minaj.  Kim also a second track entitled “The Warning” (another diss for Minaj) That dropped about a week ago.

The speculations of swagger stealing, and showed up all over the internet, on TV, and in magazine, shows like “Street Files” even had entire episodes dedicated to the topic.  But regardless what your thoughts may be, the video for “Black Friday” is sure to open a few eyes.  Check the method below.

Freshman Class of 2011.

Over the last few years, XXL’s “Freshman Class” has become a list to watch for among hip-hop fans. The highly anticipated 2011 grads have finally been revealed. Usually, it’s 10, but this year the long-running mag chose 11.  Although the cover leaked nearly a month ago, the official list was just this week.  The 11 rappers XXL thinks you should watch are: Lil Twist, CyHi Da Prynce, Big K.R.I.T., Meek Mill, Diggy Simmons, Kendrick Lamar, Fred the Godson, Lil B, Mac Miller, Yelawolf, and YG.  “This year, during the selection process, we spotted a problem: In the past, some years had been hard getting the list up to 10; in 2011, the difficulty was getting the number down to 10,” the mag said.  “We realized we had more new rap talent to pick from for the 2011 Freshman class than previous years. So we decided to make an exception and chose an extra Freshman this year, because it was clear that 10 just wouldn’t be enough.”

Some of the names on the list could be considered a grade level higher than freshman, but each are definitely deserving of being called the “next” artists to make impacts — some are already doing just that though.  Yelawolf had quite a big 2010. After dropping Trunk Muzik and Trunk Muzik 0-60, the rapper capped off the year by inking a solo deal with Eminem’s Shady Records.  Lil B is an eccentric native of the Bay Area, who started as a member of a group called The Pack. However, over the past year, he’s embraced a weird swag about himself, stirring up things online, via random tweets, and building such a following in the digital world that it could not be denied. He’s invented a new sub-genre of music he calls Based Music. What is it? We still don’t know.

Mississippi’s Big K.R.I.T. made numerous year-end Top 10 lists, following the release of two popular mixtapes, and appearances alongside Curren$y’s debut Pilot Talk, and Wiz Khalifa’s uber-popular mixtape, Kush and Orange Juice.  Compton rapper, YG, broke out with his smash single, “Toot It and Boot It,” and even managed to nab heavy hitters for the official remix, such as Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, and E-40. He’s got to be doing something right?  Mac Miller is a white rapper hailing from Pittsburgh, and signed to Rostrum Records, which also boasts Wiz Khalifa. He’s built a fan base online, thanks to the release of two mixtapes in 2010, and constant touring.  Kendrick Lamar, well, he’s been grinding hard over the past few years, becoming a mainstay on hip-hop biggest audio blogs. But, it was Dr. Dre who reached out and co-signed him that helped other fans get hip to the young rapper and his music. There’s no question Dre can pick talent, so pay attention.

Lil Twist, well, he’s from Weezy’s camp, so people are becoming more and more familiar with him. CyHi Da Prynce has gotten more and more shine, thanks his constant hustle, and re-emergence of Kanye West.  Meek Mill just inked a deal with Rick Ross, who has been touted him as the future. Fred the Godson is a Bronx rapper showing a little bit of that New York hustle.  As for Diggy Simmons, well, he had a good start by having Rev. Run as his father and appearing on “Run’s House,” but people were skeptical at first upon hearing that he was pursuing a rap career. However, once hearing a few tracks, you couldn’t deny his skills. He inked a solo deal with Atlantic Records and is currently preparing his debut album.  The 2011 Freshman issue of XXL hits newsstands on March 15.

Sonar.

Now this has nothing to do with military tracking systems, or weather Doppler technology.  What it does have to do with as a seriously intense, precisely calculated music video that will have you watching on repeat till you understand the incredible visuals.  Now, it’s not like me to be under-informed on this blog, but I have to admit, I’m not sure who made the video, or the song that goes with it.  (That doesn’t stop it from being sick)  But the video consists of lines, dots and circles, timed to go off with certain notes.  The entire premise is a bit confusing, but check the method below to see exactly what I mean.  It’s visually appealing, while ridiculously simple.

Let Me Just Make This Statement Loud And Clear, Jersey’s Here.

So I want to make this perfectly clear before I begin, I have nothing against Jersey Shore, Jerseylicious, or The Real House Wives Of New Jersey.  So now that we have that out of the way, I’m writing this because DJ Pauly D was in San Francisco recently, spinning at one of the largest clubs in the bay.  (And congrats to him, I spun that club when I was 21, but it only took him 2 years of being famous and 30 years of life to get on the same tables).  But after his club appearance, I was hit with a blazing tempest of questions about New Jersey from people… Questions like if everyone in NJ is like the cast of Jersey Shore/Jerseylicious, or folks asking me how it feels to have the most influential people out of New Jersey to be J-Wow and Snookie.  I even had someone ask if my mother was like one of the “Real Housewives of New Jersey”.  So I just want to make this clear to a few folks, and make a ”short” list of people who have done something substantial that were born or raised in New Jersey, just so were clear.  Check the method below.

People NOT from New Jersey…

These Idiots.

Pusha T and Bangladesh Studio Session.

Producer Bangladesh may be most noted for his work with Lil Wayne, but this self proclaimed “super producer” has moved past his work on ‘A Millie” and “6 Foot 7″ to work with Pusha T.  The untitled project still seems to be in its vaguest stages, but take a look at the short docu-video to get some hints on Pusha T’s next project produced by Bangladesh himself.

Lupe Fiasco’s Tim Westwood Freestyle.

I know so many people anxious for Lupe Fiasco’s new album ”Lasers” that I’ve been trying to keep an ear to the streets and listen out for the album so I can write a review before it drops.  But in my search, I found a super dope freestyle from the Tim Westwood show featuring Lupe over the “Moment For Life” beat originally for Nicki Minaj and Drake.  Click the pic to take a listen.

The History Of Hip Hop In 4 Minutes.

I’m no stranger to a good beatbox, in fact, aside from DJ videos, I’d say beatbox videos are the ones I look up most often. There’s just something about being able to replicate such a wide variety of sounds without any instrument, or tool is fascinating to me. So when I read about the French beatboxer Eklipse and his 4 minute long session documenting the evolution of Hip Hop, I was interested. When I actually saw it, my reaction was like whhaaa?… So I felt the need to share.

Among the many thing I was impressed with, I have to say that his ability to emulate rappers voices is quite impressive. I’ve heard Eklipse speak before, and when it’s in English, his accent is quite thick, so be able to replicate Busta Rhymes, Method Man, and Lil Wayne with 90% precision is remarkable.

Pusha T vs. Consequence: Biting Lyrics.

So lets begin from the start.  Pusha T dropped a song called ‘My God‘ a little while back (click the link to hear it) and long story short, Consequence took it to Twitter to accuse the Clipse member of biting one of his unreleased songs, ‘The Last Supper.’ Here is what he has to say.

Pusha’s response was as follows…

“He said that I stole his lines? Wow. Nah, I haven’t really heard much about it. Everyone who’s been hitting me up has been telling me how crazy this song is. I don’t know. I mean, I haven’t taken anything from Consequence, or anybody else, for that matter. Just for the record. I’ve been in the studio with Cons, and we’ve talked, and numerous days we’ve laughed, and…I don’t know. I missed that one. The way I’ve got to look at it now: I don’t even know if that’s for me. I can’t even believe anything like that’s for me, very honestly. I mean, until, you know, he told me something like that. I don’t know what everybody else has got going on, but ‘My God’ is an awesome record. [Laughs.]”

A few days later, Consequence caught up with Karma Loop TV to deliver a message to listeners about the entire ordeal.  What he basically says is that Pusha has a track on his computer that was unfinished, and Consequence has the remainder of that track, and will release it to prove that his lyrics (and Intellectual Property) were stolen.  Check the interview below.

Papermate – The 2nd Anniversary.

Click the pic to listen.

So Valentines Day has come and passed. But my boys back home in the Tri-State area did a little something special for the lovebirds. The “Papermate 2nd Anniversary” mixtape dropped on the 14th with a spirited collection of tracks from Paperface and crew that are sure to satisfy any type of mood you may have been in on the mushiest day of the year. And although V-Day is gone this year, the beats, swag, and lyrical content of “2nd Anniversary” are dope enough to keep anyone listening no matter what day of the year it is. Wale’s ”No Days Off” Documentary.

After being signed to Maybach Music, Wale embarked on a small concert tour, and while in ATL, he hit a bit of a snag.  Apparently the promoters weren’t doing a good job creating awareness for the show, (and anyone who does shows knows the last thing you want is a bad show when it’s not your fault.)  So Wale did the smart thing and hit the streets.  Check out the footage below.

The Japanese Drum Machine.

Click the pic to listen.

So in my relentless pursuit of discovering all things related to foreign music, I stumbled across this funky little Japanese Drum, flash animation.  It starts off a bit oddly, but the tune that the drummers produce by the end is catchy enough to have you humming it for the rest of the day.  I’m honestly not sure who created it (or why) but if your at the office with 5 minutes to kill, take a look, and enjoy.

Drake And Rihanna’s Grammy Rehearsal.

It’s no surprise to mainstream music lovers that the 2011 Grammy’s are tonight the 13th of Feb.  So in an attempt to see what the big show had in store in terms of performances, I stumbled across a bit of footage of Drake and Rihanna’s performance of ”What’s My Name”.  The footage also contains a bit of an interview from Drake and his feelings surrounding the gig, and his excitement for the Grammy’s tonight.

Weeds Good.

My boys with FreedMinds are giving away free tickets the Oddfuture OFWGKTA concert.  As anyone who’s a fan of Oddfuture knows Oddfuture is a fan of Mary Jane.  So if you excited to go to the show, submit your best weed smoking picture to info@freedminds.com, and the best picture will win free tickets to the show.  Good luck, always pass to the left.

Lil Wayne, Drake, and Play N Skillz Celebrate the XLV.

Many people celebrated the Superbowl this year in many different ways, but not too many as extravagantly as Weezy F. Baby and Drizzy Drake.  After the release of Lil Wayne’s independent track “Green And Yellow”, I’m sure he was quite relieved when Green Bay took the win.  But check the method below to see Lil Wayne, Drake, and Play N Skillz at their post XLV bash.

DMX – Time To Get Paid.

Click the pic to listen. (Courtesy of HHG)

Yes, that’s right.  For all those 80′s babies out there, take a second to soak it in.  DMX is trying to make his way back on the rap scene.  (I know you just smiled a little bit Lisa.)  For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Dog, he’s endured countless trials and tribulations, not knowing how to act in public, and an arrest record longer than most rappers since 2003…  But recently he’s hooked back up with long time partner/producer Swizz Beatz to bring out “Time To Get Paid” among a few other tracks leaked on the web.  The beat for “Time To Get Paid” features a classic B.I.G. sample, and some sultry organ work on the part of Swizzy.  The beat itself is a bit different than I’m accustomed to hearing from Swizz, but it works well for the content of the song.  There are a few moments in the track that kind of confuse me, like what seems like a bridge after a chorus that sounds like it was recorded over the phone, and the only version available is edited, so half the song is in audible, BUT, all that being said, I still think the song was well constructed, and it’s already on my iPhone for repeated listening.  Click the pic to hear “Time To Get Paid”.

Scratch And Itch.

I know without a shadow of a doubt that anyone who doesn’t work in my industry may be a bit confused, so let me explain… Serato Scratch is the industry standard for DJ’s.   Essentially it gives you the freedom to take your entire digital music collection on the road, and it equips you with advanced features that add extra creativity to your DJing.   Here are some Scratch Live highlights from NAMM Show 2011 in Anaheim, California featuring performances from Blakey, Forty One, and Gaslamp Killer.

Scratch

Now that you know what Scratch IS, the real exciting some stuff comes in the form of the SL4.  The Rane SL 4 for Serato Scratch Live is described by the website as  “The ultimate high-end solution for professional DJs.  The SL 4 is the first standalone DJ interface to offer two USB ports, superior sound with 96kHz sample rate and 24-bit digital audio processing and galvanic isolation to eliminate computer noise and interference.  Teamed with low latency ASIO and Core Audio drivers, the SL 4 can also be used as a high-grade studio production tool.”  Its essentially the iPhone of DJ gear. Feature and performance enhancements include:

  • Inputs for four turntables or CD decks switchable in any combination.
  • Two high-speed USB 2.0 ports for seamless DJ changeover and back-to-back performance.
  • Aux Input for session recording or LiveFeed.
  • Aux Output assignable to the SP-6 Sample Player and The Bridge.
  • 48 kHz and 96 kHz sample rate switch on the SL 4 rear.
  • 10-in 10-out USB sound card with any software supporting ASIO or Core Audio.
  • Built in galvanic isolation for the purest audio signal.
  • Four software-switchable analog Thru connections for regular vinyl or CD.
  • Bus power from either USB port or the included external power supply.

Itch

As for Itch… It’s essentially Scratch, without having to use turntables.  Not necessarily my steeze, but still fully capable of producing some great music when the right person is behind it.  Check some footage from the 2011 NAMM show below.

Lil Wayne Discusses ‘Green And Yellow’ On ESPN.

Click the pic to hear the song.

My good friend and investment consultant “The Distinguished Mr. Reyes”, put me onto the Lil Wayne’s already notorious “Green And Yellow” freestyle the other day on the way to the club.  For those of you who haven’t heard the song, click the pic above to listen, but essentially it’s a rally cry for the Green Bay Packers to win the Superbowl this coming Sunday.  He was recently called onto ESPN to discuss the track and its reaction.  My appologies for the shotty video quality, I always try to keep a certain standard on the blog, but this is the only video I could find anywhere on the internet.  The interview is pretty in depth, but there’s a point midway through when one of the hosts kind of blatently disses Wiz (the originator of the ‘Black and Yellow track) that had me floored.  Check the method below to hear what Weezy had to say.

Lil Wayne And Juelz Santana – Home Run (Official Video)

So the track “Home Run” by Juelz Santana and Lil Wayne has been out for over a year, but Juelz recently decided to release the video.  Maybe he was busy dipsetting, or perhaps he wanted to wait for a critical point when the video would best benefit both parties, whatever the case is, check the method below and enjoy.

Funk Flex Arested And Released.

According to TMZ, Funkmaster Flex was arrested today in New York after a woman told police Flex pushed her, tried to break her phone and then sent her threatening messages. Sources told TMZ that cops responded to a domestic violence call from a 40-year-old woman in home in Westchester early this morning. ‘When cops arrived, Flex was nowhere to be found … but the woman insisted he went ballistic on her and left.’ Cops managed to locate Flex a short time later — and arrested him on charges of harassment, aggravated harassment and criminal mischief. Flex was arraigned in Greenburgh Town Court a few hours ago and was released on $500 bail … but he’s been ordered to stay away from his accuser — pending a hearing later this month.

Mike Posner ft. Lil Wayne – Bow Chicka (Remix)

Click the pic to hear the track.

A while back my good friend and colleague Mike Vegas introduced me to the music of Mike Posner, and ever since I’ve been an undercut fan.  I already know that friends, fans, and readers who are familiar with my taste in music already find this post a bit odd, but let me assure you, the remix of “Bow Chicka” is dope.  Lil Wayne’s part definitely reinforces the song, (instead of Wayne just obliterating the entire song to the point where all you listen to is his verse before you shift to the next track) and his lyrics fit the song like a glove.  So click the pic above to hear the remix to Box Chicka.

Travis Barker ft. Clipse – Come N Get It.

Click the pic to hear the track.

Ever since Travis Barker and the late great DJ AM partnered up a few years back I’ve had a tremendous respect for the relationship between drummers and DJ’s.  So when I heard the new track produced by Pharrell and Travis Barker, and featuring the Clipse, I knew it was something worth sharing, take a listen by clicking the pic.
